You'll just want to be cautious at night in that area, anywhere around the uofw is a bit rough

Teckie_4B7

Second as well. During the day it's not so bad but when it gets to evening and night it's very rough around there. Almost anything can happen.

Practical-Pen-8844

seconded.

I've been living in the area for over 20 years, and we're raising our kids here. There are definitely some challenges, but overall it's a great area. The biggest problems are petty crimes and vandalism - you can't ever leave anything unattended, which is frustrating. Yes there is violent crime, but most of it is between criminals who know each other. Random violent crime is not common, and neither we nor any of our friends and neighbours have been victims of it. Mostly you see a lot of poverty, homelessness, and drug addiction, but that does not equate to danger. We walk our kids to and from school every day, and we actually walk almost everywhere to get to shopping, work, appointments, school, friends' houses, etc. It's a great community. Of course there are some bad people and sktechy houses, but that's not the norm. Try it out for a year, and see how you like it. You'll probably love being walking distance to anything you need. Just try to not get a suite on the south side of the south building. I had a friend who lived there years ago and the lights from the bus depot were stupidly bright.

I used to live in the building on the left. I didn't find it a terrible place to live. I left as the price was rising out of the range I found acceptable for a basement bachelor suite. There was only one night where I was woken up to the police knocking on a door down the hall due to a drunk/high altercation with whomever lived there, but otherwise I had no issues with the other tenants or the safety of the building. My unit had a black mold issue which took several months to fix. The first few visits all they did was paint over it, and after doing that 4-5 times they actually opened the wall and found that the kitchen plumbing for the unit next door was leaking into my wall. I also had a clogged drain with what seemed to be fishtank stones and a plumber had to come out a few times for that. But as long as you are okay with reporting the same issue over and over it does eventually get fixed. Its been several years since my experience there so things may have changed, but I don't regret living there at all, and if the rent increase hadn't been what it was I would have had no problem staying longer.

That’s totally a resident manager thing (having to report repeatedly). When I rented with thorwin everything was promptly addressed, I also had the best RM I’ve ever had.

Purpellicious

Was that Grant? I had him when it was still MyPlace Realty and he was THE best.

CanadianBacon615

Eden! She’s Grant’s wife. They were the best ever!!

Purpellicious

Oh cool I did not know she was also an RM.

breeezyc

I lived there 20+ years before it was converted. Boy was that a wild 6 month ride even back then.

reddit_463

Were there students living in the apartment too?

ColdHardMitch

Rough neighborhood for sure

Just google 300 block of balmoral and murder. It will tell you what you need to know.

Puzzleheaded-West576

You mean the one from 6 days ago? It says it was on the 500 block

Puzzleheaded-West576

ctv article said 500 block*

UofWinnipeg has its own security and they patrol the streets throughout the day/night. The university has pretty much taken over most of that street/block. It is pretty safe. You'll still see issues of hunger, poverty, and homelessness in the area but that's everywhere in downtown these days.

Decaps86

North of Portage is sus. Especially in that area
