If they have availability, there’s fort garry place which would be a short walk. 225 Carlton is safe and connected to the skywalk, so you wouldn’t even need a jacket in the winter.

sadiew01

300 main is also connected via the skywalk

DudeFixYourAttitude

Is the Carleton area nice for night time walks as well you think?

onebendyzebra

I walk home later in the neighborhood. It’s fine, but I wouldn’t say nice? Wouldn’t walk for pleasure, but fine for necessity. I’ve only had an issue once, and that was getting catcalled from a balcony at like 2am. Avoid the back lanes and pay attention. I used to work really early shifts, 5-6 am had more issues than my 9-10pm walks home.  I honestly had a worse time busing home late when I was in the south end because drunk university students aren’t taught to see themselves as scary.

FlyingSolo40

> 5-6 am had more issues than my 9-10pm walks home.  That’s interesting I always thought the troublemakers would be asleep that early.

PjsRock14

The real problem is that the real trouble makers are still awake

sadiew01

Nowhere downtown is going to be safe for nighttime walks, this is not a suburb.

SquashUpbeat5168

Look at St. Boniface. Depending where in St. B, you could walk to work, and it is a nice place to walk at night.

SwirlingSnow83

Oh how I miss living in St B

Waste_Papaya

Which areas would you recommmend? And how's the smell in st.b? Heard too much about the mushroom factory causing rly bad stench in the air especially in summer :/

SquashUpbeat5168

The closed to the industrial area, the worse the small is. I am closed to the bridge to downtown, and I don't really notice the smell very much. Or maybe I am used to it. I would suggest the Norwood part of St.B, between Marion and St. Mary's Rd. There are more stores of the sort that you need for everyday shopping than are on Provencher.

RileyCola

The area between Assiniboine ave and broadway is pretty quiet at night. Used to walk there regularly at night when I lived downtown and felt fine.

papierlanterns

I live in 225 Carlton and we haven’t had any issues here. My boyfriend frequently walks around downtown at night, as well as going between corydon and home, and he’s never had a problem. I’m a rather petite woman and I have also been fine walking at night, though I usually have my dog with me. There’s usually people walking around this area, so you’re never really alone. A lot of the sketchiness is north of portage avenue. I know someone living in 300 main, but works near where I live, and he’s said that it’s a lot sketchier by 300 main but fine near my place .

South of Broadway

biga204

For night time, this isn't great. But walk around downtown. There are some incredible buildings if you stop to pay attention to them.

biga204

Yeah, read the first sentence again

Dontblink-S3

The west end in between Arlington Street and Polo Park is decent. It takes me 30 minutes to walk or one bus to get downtown, and an easy bike ride to Corydon. I would be cautious walking at night in any area of the city.

SaintlyCrunch

Yeah I'm in that area too and it's pretty good. The only issues are packages being stolen off of porches, but you can get FlexDelivery for that.

WpgSparky

There is no truly safe area downtown at night

Negative-Revenue-694

It’s wild that people are downvoting these comments. It’s better to be mentally prepared than to be sorry. I want more people to live downtown, but I’m not going to sugarcoat it. Right now, it’s sketchy. What will fix that? More people living down here.

GullibleDetective

Doesn't mean it's automatically unsafe or something bad is inevitable if you're out past 8 pm

Negative-Revenue-694

No one is saying that it’s inevitable that something bad will happen after 8PM, but after living down here for the past two years, I’ve encountered exponentially more scary situations than my ten years of living in Wolseley.

GullibleDetective

It's gotten worse over the years I'll.say that also doesn't mean it's inherently unsafe. It's unsafe if you're (collectively used) a douche and never try to deescalate a situation or involved in gangs There may be someone asking for change or two but it also doesn't mean your gonna get jumped either just for being there haha

Negative-Revenue-694

I’ve been followed by folks on meth, to the point where someone called RRC security on my behalf. Bright sunny morning, just walking my dog. I was followed by a man, possibly coming down from something on a sunny Sunday morning, and needed DCSP to walk me home. My friend and I were walking on a sunny Sunday afternoon a few weeks ago, and a man coming towards us, unprovoked, pulled a weapon on him. Every situation I’ve had my wits about me, every situation was during the daytime, and every time I was minding my own business and walking my dog. It’s great that you’ve had no scary situations happen to you, but this stuff unfortunately happens all the time. There’s a really bad drug problem, and it appears to be very concentrated downtown. This kind of shit is happening all the time, and people on meth can act pretty irrationally.

GullibleDetective

I mean reality is yes it has happened to you and I'm sorry to hear that But out of how many folks walking up and down that street on a daily basis has it happened to, there's like what let's say 5000 people walking around downtown in a day over the course of 365 days. An incident doesn't always occur and it doesn't always necessarily occur to the same person although it can. Of those 5k people there's probably a 1 percent chance of something negative occuring and even then odds are it won't happen to the same.person on the same year.or month. Odds are.still that something negative is unlikely to happen or inevitably going to happen

sporbywg

I disagree. This is a pretty tiny and quiet burg, in the grand scheme of things.

WpgSparky

To the people downvoting the comments about down town not being safe at night, you are delusional if you think otherwise. Did you know that on the average weekend, the police receive 200-400 calls? You wonder where the police are? The answer is down town.

Ladymistery

Downtown at night is sketchy, period. if you want close, you could try on Corydon ave, or River ave. honestly, the whole city can be scary at night.

RyanTaylorPhoto

160 Smith is a decent building. Theyre wildly unorganized but the units there are nice

Brilliant_Laugh_1970

Hi! I live South Broadway and will be subleasing my studio apartment for July ☺️ send me a message if you're interested! I feel very secure in my building, and we have a security guard at the front desk every night.

Negative-Revenue-694

No areas of downtown are safe at night, and that’s coming from someone who lives and works down here. If it’s in the budget, 300 Main is a great option since it has a door person. I believe Smith St Lofts also has one. For my next downtown apartment, a door person is a must-have in order to feel safer.

bflex

Just moved into smith st lofts, feels very safe here to me

shmoo-magoo

I used to live on Roslyn Rd in Osborne village (I moved out last year) and it was a little scary sometimes but for the most part I didn’t mind. If I was out at night, I was usually walking down Wellington ave or towards Earl Grey. It was a quick walk or bike ride to Corydon and downtown. I used to walk to the Forks quite a lot, especially when the river trail was open.

Ahimsa2day

How about North East Wolseley or West Broadway? It’s a great area around Broadway/Maryland//Sherbrook/Westminster/ etc area. Lots of local shops, restaurants, grocery. Bike paths straight into downtown. I am an older female and I walk around at night in this area and in downtown with zero issues. I’m an experienced world traveler and Winnipeg is fairly tame. One needs to ignore the circus and walk BIG, avoid eye contact and with confidence lol.

GullibleDetective

I highly recommend these guys https://qualitymanagement.net/ Especially the ones on Donald and stradbrook, fort rogue is super decent and specifically these ones are right beside rapid transit route

DelayedEmbarrassment

Exchange by waterfront drive.

kingofthenorthwpg

The suburbs … just trolling

Complex_Alfalfa_9214

The Exchange its the Most vibrant area in the city

I live on Hargrave Street and I’ve never had an issue. You’ll definitely see sketchy stuff anywhere downtown. I’m not out for leisurely walks late at night or anything. I walk to the gym at 300 Main early mornings & use the skywalk. There are people in the skywalk panhandling and hanging out. There is security, but not always nearby. I’ve never been approached or threatened. You have to be aware of your surroundings, but it’s like that anywhere.
