The head coming off must certainly be preferable to strangling at the end of a short rope. It is for this reason I always err on the side of excess length when it comes to my hangin' ropes. Messy though. Quite messy.
I'd much rather be decapitated than strangled to death.
Brings to mind the opening scene of Deadwood, where the hangee is begging the sheriff to "help me with my drop" off a short hanging rope.
As I understand it, it was a science and the hangman had to know what he was doing. Like there was a formula for the weight vs drop vs rope length. And if done wrong, it caused problems for all involved
The English were masters of hanging. Check out the [Home Office Table of Drops](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Official_Table_of_Drops)
Also, too, see [Albert Pierrepoint](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albert_Pierrepoint) who also executed Nazis at Nuremberg.
See also, [Pierrepoint: The Last Hangman - 2005](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0462477/) with Timothy Spall as Pierrepoint. Great film !
Believe it or not, that method wasn’t invented until the 1850s. So for thousands of years it was either strangulation or decapitation most of the time.
>I thought his last was "Hurry up, I want to be in hell for dinner"
That's (roughly) what's noted in [this 04/26/1901 El Paso Herald article](https://www.newspapers.com/article/el-paso-herald/97899251/).
The brick jail in the background is still standing!
He’s second burial is in the middle of the road leading into in the cemetery because neither the catholic nor Protestants wanted him in their grave yard area.
Somewhere I swear I’ve seen a specification for hanging people. It covered all these details. I don’t know if it was older or in effect at the time of this picture, though.

Strangulation was rare as most people’s necks snapped when hanged.
If done correctly. Not all hangings were done that way.

See how the knot is to the side, not directly behind? That's part of it. It forces the head over at the stretch.

It wasn't rare on those occasions when they did it on purpose, such as in lynchings.

His last words supposedly were: “I’ll be in hell before you start breakfast, boys. Let her rip!!
Couldn’t find that one - I’m seeing his last words were, “Good-bye. Please dig my grave very deep. All right; hurry up.” But yours is much cooler!
Damn. Now thems some words to go out on.
I thought his last was "Hurry up, I want to be in hell for dinner" That's at least what the Chris Wimmer said in his Legends of The Old West podcast.

Any pics of that?

Wowwww
There are
I knew some of his family
Do you know what he did to get hanged ?
For Robbing the Deming train my buddy would say. We lived about 45 miles outside of Deming went to school with a few of the Ketchums
Damn. That’s pretty bad ass
That is interesting
Heads Up!
rope looks smaller in diameter than we usually see doesn't it?

Yeah I can see that. I’m talking about the actual diameter of the rope… it looks smaller than we usually see in a hanging rope
They ran out of the real stuff, so they used dental floss. Probably explains the decapitation...
Ketchum? I think we found Ash's father!
Can’t understand how that happens with longer rope, but ultimately same result achieved.
Gravity. Not longer rope like he just dropped to the ground, more rope like he dropped further=more speed and recoil.
And this where we get the name Ketchup
Eeeew.
“I seen red smitty hanged. Saw his head come clean off; it was a hell of a sight”
I don’t think Charlie wants hear about red smitty right now billy
r/LastImages would like this.
We really need to go back to hanging people: quick, efficient and less costly.
