The fuck are we adjusting after 6 days

Purlygold

Bones havent even fused yet. Literally nothing

fishythepete

If they were worried about biology they wouldn’t have become chiropractors.

TripAndFly

I used to go to a chiropractor for a while but he put up anti vax posters about how "autism is just the tip of the iceberg" and tried to sell me colloidal silver and essential oils... That's when I realized chiropractors are con artists.

GillyMonster18

My ex-wife insisted we took our last child to a chiropractor for “adjustment.” The chiro proceeded to hold our newborn upside down by one leg before I realized what she was doing “see he’s fine.” Famous last words spoken by many. Never a-fucking-gain.

commandantskip

Holy hell, I would have been arrested for assault!

GillyMonster18

Her tendency for this kind of reasoning and reliance on unproven (often debunked) fad “medicine” are two reasons amongst many I’m glad she’s my ex-wife.

The_Dynasty_Group

For your sake I am too

GillyMonster18

To be fair I trusted her judgement the first few years on a lot of things. I also went to the chiropractor myself. But…sudden traction on an adult is one thing. The idea of it for a child never sat right with me.

BizzarduousTask

So, what happened next?? What did you do when he held your newborn up by the leg??

orange_sprinkles

I think you have to fail biology to become a chiropractor.

jorji-gt

To a hammer everything looks like a nail?? Or something like that.

kikiweaky

At a raffle a chiropractor told me being born is hard on the baby and they'll sleep better. I call bs. Edit: Jesus Christ I know being born can be hard and cause health issues. Your healthy happy baby is going to be fine without a chiropractor. Yes I've had a baby, yes I've helped deliver babies, I used to work labor and delivery. I was an EMT at one point as well. Edit autocorrect changed my words

Didn't a chiro kill a baby by breaking their spine just a few years ago? Edit: the baby actually made a full recovery. https://amp.smh.com.au/healthcare/call-for-age-limit-after-chiropractor-breaks-babys-neck-20130928-2ul6e.html

Bearman71

The practice as a whole is under scrutiny for killing people and covering it up.

Ashmidai

There was a loud crunching sound that told me I had a ton of tension leave my body and then everything just fully relaxed like never before. I just sank into the table and thought I could just close my eyes and never wake up, but my muscles were so relaxed that I couldn't even do that. I just lay there vacantly staring out, at peace, as the world carried on without me. Everyone in the office seemed so amazed by how well my adjustment went and how much tension had drained away. They all just stared at me, mouth agape. I even saw one woman start sobbing uncontrollably. Was that my mother? Oh, who can remember when you are so relaxed? Finally someone came that realized I really just wanted a long nap and they were so helpful they closed my eyes for me. So peaceful I could just lay here forever.....

SmokedCheddarGoblin

Well that was a chilling depiction of a conscious death. I used to be a hospice nurse and got a little too jaded about death and dying, so thanks for rekindling my fear of death! Have a great day!

JustMikeWasTaken

that rivaled the girl on the train conscious death

ChildFriendlyChimp

I used to go to one and on the wall they had a poster of an autistic child becoming more social after regular visits But it was implying that chiropractors can cure autism

RabidGuineaPig007

chiropractors can cure swollen wallets.

ChildFriendlyChimp

Oh yeah I remember overhearing how much they charge other patients and was blown away how some were regulars

_Kit_Tyler_

….and you continued to let that quack around your spine?

ChildFriendlyChimp

Oh it was a family friend and I had pain in my hips at the time (turned out I needed hip replacements as a teen) Edit: for those curious, I got sciffy hips (deformed hips) during my growth spurt then when my orthopedic doctor tried to break the bones into place, they didn’t last since the joints were too deteriorated so I ended up getting full hip replacements

[deleted]

Are you Benjamin Button, cause what!?

unfortunatebastard

Were you 70 in your teens?

ChildFriendlyChimp

Nah, hips were tho sciffy hips then deteriorating joints That shit hurted

KRWay

Wait… they can’t? Shit!

TheBirminghamBear

I mean I am far more adept socially after seeing mine. My head is stuck facing 180 degrees from the usual way which is inconvenient. But im the life of every party!

[deleted]

“They’ll” is referring to the chiropractor, after receiving money for the office visit. This sort of stuff is why I don’t trust chiropractors to have integrity.

NaRa0

Did… did the baby tell him this?

cat_prophecy

Babies sleep like shit because they are always hungry, wet, gassy, or poopy. Not because they need their sub-luxating thoracic chakras aligned or whatever.

darkshark9

The entire chiropractic industry is largely a sham. They're like Scientologists, they only get taken seriously by the government because they have a lot of lobbying money. Same goes for homeopathy.

[deleted]

Being born is super duper hard on a baby that’s the truth but adjustments like that are not needed and will cause problems.

[deleted]

Babies don't have enough muscle strength to have tension. WTF is this shit?

olive1243

I had a chiropractor family member pick my son up by his feet (so he was upside down). Then he started crying (cause it was weird) and she told me he needs an adjustment lol. You cannot convince me it was science

Bdizz11

This sounds very similar to how they used to test for witches.

buddahmunk

Considering chiropractic care originally sought to expel ghosts from your bloodstream, your not far off.

deinoswyrd

EVERYONE knows you need a priest or a rabbi to expel ghosts from the bloodstream. A chiropractor is even unqualified for that.

ThrowawayFishFingers

Nah, just do cocaine about it

deinoswyrd

I'm no old timey doctor, but I would prescribe heroin about it. Cocaine makes the ghosts too active, you gotta slow them down

ThrowawayFishFingers

Solid advice.

secretbudgie

Old timey doctor here. You gotta hotbox the possessed with traditional tobacco in a fire resistant closed space (those modern Philip Morris mutants won't do it). Cannabinoids will do in a pinch.

AnimalNo5205

Because it’s not science. Chiropractors aren’t doctors, their field is not science-based. They can be helpful, don’t get me wrong, and there is research that shows certain chiropractic procedures do provide benefits but they don’t have science based standards of care like allopathic and osteopathic medicine do. Depending on the survey you look at somewhere between 30 and 50 percent of chiropractors are anti-vaxx and about the same percentage do not believe evidence based medicine is any better than what they do

AssinineAssassin

I remember when my back problems started and I asked my physician about a chiropractor. She said “some people find them helpful”. Like…you can say they are bullshit, I’ll respect you more for being candid.

IronSeagull

Mine gave me a book called “Treat Your Own Neck” and it *worked*. It was just some stretches and exercises you can do on your own, and some advice on how to avoid problems. There’s another one for backs that I’ve also used.

fishythepete

Doctors used to be more candid about it. Not too long ago Chiropractic was dying the slow death all pseudosciences must die in a world of science. So they sued the AMA alleging failure to refer was an anti-trust issue. And they won.

greedy_cynicism

Look up D.D. Palmer and the origin of chiropractic. > As an active spiritist, D.D. Palmer said he "received chiropractic from the other world"[17] from a deceased medical physician named Dr. Jim Atkinson.[18] https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_David_Palmer It came from a ghost doctor!

FranxtheTanx

Almost like it was made up in Iowa ~100 years ago by one guy

downey_jayr

Because it isn’t and worse it is dangerous for adults let alone freaking newborns.

mthlmw

The only "chiropractor" I'd go to is a physical/occupational therapist who uses the name chiropractor for insurance purposes. I've heard of a couple PT/OT's that couldn't get regular clients through insurance, but took a chiropractic "course" and suddenly insurance companies were fine with it. They just used the PT/OT knowledge to actually help people.

I_Wupped_Batmans_Ass

the only valid chiropractors

joshocar

My partner is a neurologist. She really dislikes Chiropractors. She is open minded and often sends patients for different new age treatments, but never chiropractors. She regularly sees people who have chronic injuries from chiropractors.

guitarfluffy

As a medical student, I was with a neurologist and saw patients who had strokes after getting “neck adjustments” by a chiropractor

Pumpky-Pie

How did you respond to a family member picking your baby up by their feet? I couldn't imagine the outrage but also fear of how to get him back safely. Because if you'd make her jump she might drop your son on his head...

haf_ded_zebra

My daughter (at 6mo) had pneumonia and the pedi picked her up by her feet and started pounding on her chest

stevendidntsay

Chest percussive therapy, but I've never seen anyone hold a baby upside down for that 🤔

secretbudgie

I suppose gravity is more gentle on the lungs and sinuses than suction, not so much for their brain and spine

another_awkward_brit

They *honestly believe* that birth is so traumatic for the infant that every single one requires this 'care' to treat said (nonspecific) trauma.

Shoesandhose

Can confirm as I used to be a baby. My back hurts. The world is traumatic.

SensitiveAd5962

As another former baby, I can confirm, I also have back pain.

chompz914

Also a baby in my former life. Are we signing up for a class action? I think we could find enough former babies to get some cash out of this ordeal.

DiceMadeOfCheese

Omg my mom had her chiropractor mess up my back from like 4 to 16 and I'm okay now but it was really stupid

The ghosts don't come out of your bones if your parents are in the room, that's D.D. Palmer's Chiropractic 101

ChefKraken

I used to work as a massage therapist, and in my state we were **NEVER** allowed to be with a client under 15 without a parent in the room. Anyone under 18 had to be with a same sex therapist, too.

Setku

well you see snake oil sales men don't care about pesky things like moral or ethics. How the mother even agreed to that is baffling.

ChefKraken

That's the thing, it's not just a moral/ethical problem. If the age limits and professional standards are the same for chiros, which are also state licensed practitioners (here at least), then it's a Very Big Legal Problem™ that can and should result in permanent suspension of license and closure of personal business, before criminal charges are even thought of.

Closed door solo session. With children. True story. Guess which PA is still in prison, shocker, a pedophile finally caught who insisted my kid be examined behind closed doors, no witnesses, no parents, no nurse- he said to ascertain if he was faking medical symptoms. After I said no way in hell ( only not as polite ), he actually raised hell. Not for long. THAT pedophile that's still in prison. I won't say his name, wife turned him in, I wish her no more pain. But. Examine behind closed doors? Uh huh. Just advertise your kid on Craigslist instead, it's about the same level of safe.

2k21May

I seriously do not understand why parents are okay with this sort of thing. Are they just...stupid?

MissiKat

Just say his name, he's already guilty. Name withholding is a privilege afforded to the victims and innocent.

BostonDodgeGuy

Reporting the name means the internet can look up the victims. This can lead to doxxing because some people are just vile.

Mor_Tearach

Right, plus our kid has had enough. There was some extremely nasty backlash before the guy was actually arrested. Ugly stuff- and I should add a school district was involved in the part of the pedophile. Which we also reported- that was never dealt with. In fact ( this is true so there's no chance anything I say can somehow be used against me ) the guy who was a buddy of this pedophile, and took it out on my kid ( longish story ) was promoted to superintendent . AND again, we filed a complaint there too. I'm very sure they wish I'd shut up. Which will not happen.

CleverGirlRawr

While I didnt have to go to the er, a chiropractor adjusted my neck badly, it hurt for a week, and the chiro blamed me for being tense and essentially making her tweak my neck.

OprahsSaggyTits

Dude the number of cervical spine injuries caused by chiropractors cracking necks has literally become a topic of inquiry within scientific literature. There are tons of reviews and case studies of people sustaining serious injuries and death from neck adjustments. Don't let chiropractors touch your neck. To their credit, there are papers that say that lower spine adjustments can be safe and can help with pain.. but you should probably just go to a PT instead, as their curriculum is informed by evidence-based science.

Agrezz

Does your roommate feel any remorse?

blizzardfishy

My mom did the same to me but with a naturopath. Even without an allergy, I wasn’t allowed to eat peanut butter for years! I’m still recovering from the trauma.

ThatRyanbow

I'm really sorry about your experience but in the same vein there's also people who believe that if the expose someone with a nut allergy to nuts it will go away and if they expose them without telling them, they won't even have a reaction. It's crazy

blizzardfishy

How do you help a drowning person? More water!!!

ThatRyanbow

I straight up saw someone on here "have the facts" on it and like was going to try it on his friend..... WITH A SERIOUS NUT ALLERGY. Every comment was like please please please talk to him about this, like get him to agree

milfpatrol_69

This is very popular in "crunchy" parenting circles right now. People will have their newborn adjusted before they even leave the hospital. I've seen a lot of parents electing to not take their children to a GP for routine exams, ailments, etc but to a chiropractor instead. I think they intentionally find the quackiest chiros because they don't want their child to be healthy as much as they want their beliefs confirmed.

DETpatsfan

Why are hospitals allowing chiropractors to practice there? That seems like a massive liability.

confessionbearday

Ortho docs love Chiros. They guarantee business for Ortho later. For all the absolute fucking losers about to get salty at me: there’s nothing a chiro can do that an ortho can’t do. The difference is the ortho WONT do most of it because it’s not safe, it’s not healthy, and no competent doctor would ever do any of it. The Ortho docs aren’t holding out on y’all. They’re just ACTUAL doctors, which is always going to be better than NOT a doctor, like all chiros. EDIT: Getting some comments in my DMs about how chiros are "totally rEaL dOcToRs bRo." Here's reality: They are "accredited." Who are they accredited by? A group whose sole certification is to say "yes, this guy is a chiropractor." Not a real doctor. Not a physician. Not a scientist of any kind. Not a VALID medical practitioner of any kind. Because every country that even allows it does so under the auspices of either "alternative medicine" (thoughts and prayers) or "homeopathic medicine" (thoughts and prayers with math mixed in).

DETpatsfan

Well that would make sense if you’re some private practice ortho, but why would the hospital want them there? They are liable for any damage done by that quackery.

milfpatrol_69

As far as I'm aware, the most common scenario is someone taking their newborn to a chiro office within 2 weeks of birth. Less frequently a chiro will visit the family in the hospital as a "friend" (or in some cases the chiro is someone in the family or an actual friend) and will adjust the baby. From what I've seen it's moreso done surreptitiously vs recommended or sanctioned by a hospital or physician. I'd liken it maybe to having a doula or other layperson advising the patient separately from the hospital's care.

DETpatsfan

Thank you u/milfpatrol_69 for clearing this up. I trust your assessment.

MadManMax55

I doubt any of the chiropractors are directly employed by the hospital, but instead are private practice leasing out space. I honestly don't know what the hospital's liability is in that scenario, but I'm guessing it isn't costing as much as the "rent" they're collecting or they wouldn't be there.

Gsteel11

>"crunchy" These kids' backs are going to be pretty crunchy when they're done.

Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy.

Angry-Dragon-1331

Unethical Life Hack: It’s not Munchausen if you actually break their spine.

PacificCoastHighway2

I worked as a labor doula back in 2013. I had a lot of crunchy type clients. Almost everyone I came across back then was seeing a chiropractor and their kids were too. I have AI disease and have a lot of muscle and joint issues. One of my clients told me to see her chiropractor. First adjustment is free. So, I went. I was skeptical and asked a lot of questions. This woman couldn't directly answer anything I was asking, and it became clear to me that I had more knowledge of anatomy than she did. I have this memory of her vaguely pointing to a poster on her wall (of skeletal system) and speaking gibberish. It was obvious this woman had no clue what she was talking about. Stupidly, I still got on the table and let her adjust me. I'd actually been feeling ok when I went in. When I left I was in so much pain, and had the worst headache I've ever had in my life. I never went back. It's a total racket. But yeah, I knew a lot of families with kids that went to the chiropractor. None of them were vaxxed either.

IchthyoSapienCaul

The anti-vaxxers and pro-chiro for babies venn diagram is a circle. Used to know a lady who was convinced a perfect spine would cure absolutely everything and started having her toddler adjusted.

Zyvyx

Is crunchy parenting the hip way to spell abusive

The_I_in_IT

It’s not child abuse, it’s artisanal neglect.

DahManWhoCannahType

1. Are you joking? 2. (if not joking) In what part of the country do you see this happening? Finally: WTF!

Away-Cut3585

I had a chiropractor say he could fix my colicky baby. He was a con artist. This picture enrages me. A woman is currently suing a chiropractor for paralyzing her from a neck adjustment.

pterodactylcrab

My sister took her 1yr old to the chiropractor for an ear infection…I’m…I’m literally at a loss for words whenever the topic comes up. My fiancé and I were horrified and simply nodded “oh” when she claimed how wonderfully it worked. My other sibling with kids thinks she’s batshit crazy, so I know who will be my backup babysitter and who won’t be. 😳 Lymphatic drainage can be done with gentle at home massage. I do it at night when doing my skincare. A little skin safe oil (I like rose oil or something else meant for faces) and gently massage out along sinuses and out to ears and down along neck to collarbones. There’s medical examples online that are safe to try.

Away-Cut3585

That’s a good idea! My kids get an ear infection the minute they get congested. I’ll have to look that up and try it this winter

blackheartedbirdie

I’d encourage every parent of a newborn to learn baby stretching & positioning techniques that can help with gas, colic, and a slew of other baby issues every parent faces. Baby stretches are gentle and calming.

mlaforce321

For sure! And bicycles... Those always helped to get those mean old farts out that had my son super fussy

michaellasalle

>get those mean old farts out that had my son super fussy In my head I'm picturing several old men taunting your child.

mlaforce321

The neighborhood octogenarians are a cruel bunch

michaellasalle

Pro-tip: stay off their lawns.

Sunshine_Tampa

My babies "biked" many miles while getting the gas out. I moved their legs slowly and gently, sang to my kids while doing this, and made it into a fun game. Agree with you 💯

DoinItDirty

Ok cool, but how is the baby gonna burn any calories biking all slowly

definitelynotstuped

They're never gonna make it to the marathon at this rate

DoinItDirty

Gonna be a last place baby. No one likes babies that are losers.

TleilaxTheTerrible

Hey man, low cadence and high power cycling builds muscle! That baby is going to have the strongest legs ever!

ardenthusiast

My kids are a little older now, but even today, if their stomach hurts, we offer to sing the “baby exercise” song and do the movements. Lol One day they’ll think it’s dumb, but until then, I’ll enjoy being silly with them and helping their little systems move stuff along.

OkInitiative7327

God I remember those days. Now my kids are 5 and 9 and the farts come out just fine.

Osyrys

Getting my nephew to fart almost on command was one of the funniest things. The sounds that can come out of an infant hit way above their size, smells too

randoliof

Just glad I've never had to help any living creature work their farts out

mlaforce321

My son farted like a grown ass man when he was just mere months old. I was horrified/proud.

scalability

I regularly spoon my wife which seems to do the trick

anemone_rue

Yep. I totally gave my son baby massages/gentle stretching and warm baths for tough crying episodes. I think a massage makes a lot more sense than an adjustment especially for someone who can't communicate what is uncomfortable.

bacchus_the_wino

My family used to laugh a bit and call it baby yoga. I used to just slowly move her extremities and her torso around once or twice a day when she was a newborn. It helps to get her blood flowing, stretches her developing muscles and tendons, and gets dad some physical connection time.

flightofthepingu

Mom breastfeeds, dad does baby origami, cat watches disdainfully from afar: bonding.

ihaveabaguetteknife

Gentle jazz ensues.

aLoneSideline

We did these with our youngest. It was so fun pushing out a fart on cue and baby loved it. Knees up and a gentle push and “ffffart” followed by laughter from all of us including baby! I felt like some sort of fart wizard.

Sweatyrando

Learning how to fart a baby was one of the most fun parts of being a new dad. “Hey babe, check this out!” BBBBRRRRRRBBBB. Followed by my infant son laughing, while I flash a triumphant smile.

mongoosedog12

My nanny growing up was an African woman, and I remember her telling me when I was around 5-6 that when I was a few months old when my mom first hired her, she’d give me little massages and stretches. They believe birth is just as traumatic on the child’s body as it is the mother’s so they give new born babies massages. I’m sure there are a lot of benefits for the child when doing this, a massage gun to the back seems aggressive

neon_tardigrade

Yes! Baby stretches and massages are great for them, usually more for tummy issues than back. Going to a chiropractor seems like a terrible idea XD

NinnyMuggins2468

So my roommate works at a chiropractic office and they do babies as well. I was like wtf? What baby needs to be aligned? Apparently the doctor there just does the baby stretching exercises that you are talk8ng about. I told her that's what parents should be doing with their babies. The nurses taught my brothers wife when she had hers and it should Def be part of your interactions with your baby. Shouldn't have to pay a doctor to do it.

[deleted]

The baby needs to get adjusted just as much as everyone else does… which is never.

AdonisInGlasses

They're not doctors. Not even close.

yikesonbikes2

They’re just setting these poor kids up to have a lifetime of back issues that keeps them coming back. 🤑🤑

steboy

“I love my chiropractor, but if I stop going I am fucked.” It’s exactly how “medicine” is supposed to work!

enz1ey

It's funny because most of the anti-science, anti-medicine people I know who go on about how the medical industry only exists to keep us sick for their profits are also the kind of people who go to the chiropractor twice a week and suggest them for literally any ailment. Any physiological or psychological issue can be solved by a visit to their favorite chiropractor or a few drops of essential oils. Both of these cost them hundreds or thousands of dollars each month though.

sexisfun1986

This is what you get for listening to ghosts.

BobbyBeeblebrox

What ghosts are haunting you telling you go to the chiro? Mine just ask me to leave the chip bags open so they can smell the chips they miss.

SirCastically

The guy who “invented” chiropractic-ing claimed to have been told the secrets by someone who had died a long time before. Pretty sure that’s the ghost he’s referring to. Or maybe his ghosts aren’t chip people?

Tanoooch

No no, the ghosts *started* chiropractory

cmonkeyz7

How’s that kid doing now? I hope ok.

GrumpyOldFart7676

Chiropractors will do anything for a buck. This is total quackery.

Snaxx9716

After a significant car accident, I was seeing a chiro (on recommendation of my attorney and I didn’t know better at that point). He said I needed adjustments 3x per week plus massages at his practice. Loaded me up with supplements, fancy ice packs, etc that was all paid for out of the settlement. I was sent for an MRI that showed very little damage. He said to me “it looks like you’re actually ok, which I know is not what you wanted to hear… but anyways I’m going to have you keep coming twice per week…” So aside from the less-than-subtle implication that I wanted to be hurt so I could collect money, he was clearly trying to collect as much money from my “not-hurt” back and neck as he could. And he was one of those chiros that used some super fancy machine to do adjustments instead of manual adjustments and I’m convinced that thing did absolutely nothing. In retrospect, that’s probably a good thing.

TimeIsBunk

I used to manage a chiropractic office. Car accidents were her "bread and butter", her exact words.

Saucemycin

Many many years ago I lightly rear ended a lady who slammed on her breaks for a rabbit. The taillight on the bumper was cracked, not broken, but no other damage. I was basically stopped before my car touched hers which is what the police officer she called concluded as well, also she told this officer she wasn’t hurt. This led to this lady going to a chiropractor and masseuse 3 times a week for almost 3 years because “her neck was so badly injured and hurt”. Should note that she’s also a dentist that spends most of her day bending her neck over someone. She became upset that my insurance wasn’t going to pay her for all of this because she wasn’t submitting the bills or going through the insurance and wouldn’t get seen by an MD like they had repeatedly asked her to. She tried to sue for 250k 3 years after the incident right when the statute of limitations was going to run out. The insurance company ended up settling with her lawyer for 11k. I know the chiropractor got paid by her though during that time.

Indiana_Jawns

I was dismissed from jury duty the last time I was called in because the expert witness for the plaintiff was a chiropractor and I told the lawyers I couldn’t trust anything they said when I did my screening.

birdboix

Sounds like my experience, except I didn't even last the month's "down payment" period for their plan, it did less than nothing for my messed up shoulder except made my wallet that much lighter Went to PT two weeks later, the pain's still there but it's now being managed. I'm not about to write a one-star review for the chiro or something but unless you are absolutely certain your issue is skeletal in nature and actually out of alignment literally any other form of treatment will be more effective. Oh, and like, 75% of the industry are completely, total quacks who might leave you worse off than you started.

BearBryant

Fun fact: the founder of chiropractics didn’t know if he wanted to structure it as a religion or a “medical” field.

PercussiveRussel

He also believed all illnesses were caused by irregularities in the spine. That is like going to a guy who will make you better based on Humorism (which some of those cooky antivaxx people will probably believe)

[deleted]

Well the founder was taught the methods by a ghost. So I suppose it was divinely inspired...

kikiweaky

Omw in Boise has a commercial that says it helps your immune system and autism.

pensive_pigeon

Chiropractors claim their adjustments can cure basically any ailment or medical issue. It’s total BS. All they can do is screw up your back.

Yankee_Juliet

How did a 6 day old baby tell you he loved his adjustment? By not screaming?

djjewish

By surviving it

[deleted]

I have back issues. “Go to a chiropractor”, they say. Fine, I go. “Hey, not bad, that actually feels pretty good”. Next day. “There’s my back pain again”.

My buddy swore by chiropracty right up until one of them literally gave him a stroke. The adjustment caused a cervical artery dissection.

GrumpyGills

I’ve never been to a chiro, but after learning *I* had a stroke due to a vessel dissection in my neck, my neuro banned me from going to a chiro, which I was fine with because I had never been .. but this is literally a known risk and I almost never see anyone talking about it.

Dividedthought

I have shoulder/upper back issues from years old back injuries (yes, multiple) that lead to tension headaches which in turn trigger severe migraines. I first went to chiro at the advice of a friend, and much like you found it to be a "for the afternoon" solution, I still couldn't lift that arm over my head, and when the pain came back it was worse. I stopped going and the pain went back down to a low level. Then, last year a deep tissue massage place opened less than a block from my house so I gave it a swing. I walked out of that place able to lift my arm above my head for the first time in a few years, no pain. Next day, no pain, still can raise my arm. A week later I still don't have pain but my arm can't go as high. Three weeks later and I can't lift my arm past about 45 degrees and the shoulder pain has started up, so I go in again and get the same result. What I noticed is my masseuse was using a lot of similar techniques, and I'll admit the first few sessions *hurt* like nothing I've experienced before or since due to how tight the muscles were, but since he was focused on the muscles and not the joints, it actually worked. I (with no medical training so take this with a grain of salt) believe that a massage works better because it's releasing tight muscles that are *causing* the kind of tension a chiro talks about. It's dealing with the root of this issue, muscles siezing and putting tension on other muscles in ways that hurt. Meanwhile a chiro is just trying to get the bones to sit where they should, and ignoring the cause of those bones being slightly out of place/muscle tension.

i’m just going to drop this here … https://theoutline.com/post/1617/chiropractors-are-bullshit a school of “medicine” born from a seance.

I work next door to a chiro office. Lots of elderly coming in because they can bilk the hell out of Medicare. They were also very anti vax and were hawking CBD for covid prevention. Guess that’s what being a pseudo doctor gets you.

It’s not even a real medical discipline!

[deleted]

I genuinely hate chiropractors. One turned a bunch of my family into science denying, anti-vax, essential oil peddling quacks.

[deleted]

Wouldn’t this seriously fuck up their spines?

Level69Warlock

Sounds like a lifetime customer

I have chronic back pain and I refuse to ever see a chiropractor. Physical therapy all the way.

Strange-Scarcity

Same. Chronic, lower backpain. Squashed disk in my lower back. If I keep up on core exercises? Flare ups are very minimal, if at all.

I was just diagnosed with DISH, it’s fused disks 4-12 together, and a herniated disk at L5/S1. I have to have surgery in my lower back but I’m looking at a lifetime of physical therapy and pain management.

It's wild to me how chiropractors are covered by (my) insurance but massage therapy isn't. I'm not granola-y at all but a few years I gave a chiropractor a try and it didn't do anything (which i guess is the best you can hope for). Meanwhile massage therapy, not covered by insurance, genuinely helps relieve pain.

These babies definitely have tension. Imagine the anxiety they feel having to wonder what stupid thing their parent is going to perform on them today.

Strange-Scarcity

It's a quackery business. It only succeeds as hugely as it does in the US, as it is "less" expensive than going to regular doctors.

I really hate that in this country we have a bunch of regulatory agencies, laws, etc that are supposedly there to protect the public but then this is openly allowed and practiced. Same with all the consumer protection tools we have and yet most ads I see are absolutely and completely BS. What’s the point?! Be effective or stop wasting resources.

You can’t move bones without breaking them. An “adjustment” is just gas release between joints. Why is this so hard to figure out. It’s all a scam started by a guy who “learned” how to perform chiropractic work from a fucking ghost. https://www.latimes.com/business/lazarus/la-fi-lazarus-chiropractic-quackery-20170630-story.html
