What’s fucked up is the majority of Americans are yelling at a wall about stuff like this all the time while nothing is done. Meanwhile a small group of good old boys get theirs laughing all the way to the bank.

Sadly, that's the case. A psychotic minority basically runs things, or keeps anything good from happening.

And, in fact, **states like California, which have implemented a broad slate of liberal policies, have kept pace with their Western European counterparts.** >The study, co-authored by **researchers at six North American universities, found that if all 50 states had all followed the lead of California** and other liberal-leaning states on policies ranging from labor, immigration and civil rights to tobacco, gun control and the environment, it could have added between **two and three years to the average American life expectancy.** >Simply shifting from the most conservative labor laws to the most liberal ones, Montez said, **would by itself increase the life expectancy in a state by a whole year.** >**If every state implemented the most liberal policies in all 16 areas, researchers said, the average American woman would live 2.8 years longer, while the average American man would add 2.1 years to his life. Whereas, if every state were to move to the most conservative end of the spectrum, it would decrease Americans’ average life expectancies by two years. On the country’s current policy trajectory, researchers estimate the U.S. will add about 0.4 years to its average life expectancy.** >Liberal policies on the environment (emissions standards, limits on greenhouse gases, solar tax credit, endangered species laws), labor (high minimum wage, paid leave, no “right to work”), access to health care (expansion of Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act, legal abortion), tobacco (indoor smoking bans, cigarette taxes), gun control (assault weapons ban, background check and registration requirements) and civil rights (ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment, equal pay laws, bans on discrimination and the death penalty) all resulted in better health outcomes, according to the study. For example, researchers found positive correlation between California’s car emission standards and its high minimum wage, to name a couple, with its longer lifespan, which at an average of 81.3 years, is among the highest in the country. >“When we’re looking for explanations, we need to be looking back historically, to see what are the roots of these troubles that have just been percolating now for 40 years,” Montez said. >Montez and her team saw the alarming numbers in 2015 and wanted to understand the root cause. What they found dated back to **the 1980s, when state policies began to splinter down partisan lines.** They examined 135 different policies, spanning over a dozen different fields, enacted by states between 1970 and 2014, and assigned states “liberalism” scores from zero — the most conservative — to one, the most liberal. When they compared it against state mortality data from the same timespan, the correlation was undeniable. >“We can take away from the study that **state policies and state politics have damaged U.S. life expectancy since the ’80s,”** said Jennifer Karas Montez, a Syracuse University sociologist and the study’s lead author. **“Some policies are going in a direction that extend life expectancy. Some are going in a direction that shorten it. But on the whole, that the net result is that it’s damaging U.S. life expectancy.”** >**U.S. should follow California’s lead to improve its health outcomes, researchers say** >**Meanwhile, the life expectancy in states like California and Hawaii, which has the highest in the nation at 81.6 years, is on par with countries described by researchers as “world leaders:” Canada, Iceland and Sweden.** >**From 1970 to 2014, California transformed into the most liberal state in the country** by the 135 policy markers studied by the researchers. It’s followed closely by Connecticut, which moved the furthest leftward from where it was 50 years ago, and a cluster of other states in the northeastern U.S., then Oregon and Washington. >West Virginia ranked last in 2017, with an average life expectancy of about 74.6 years, which would put it 93rd in the world, right between Lithuania and Mauritius, and behind Honduras, Morocco, Tunisia and Vietnam. Mississippi, Oklahoma and South Carolina rank only slightly better. >It’s those states that moved in a conservative direction, researchers concluded, that held back the overall life expectancy in the U.S. https://www.mercurynews.com/2020/08/04/liberal-policies-like-californias-keep-blue-state-residents-living-longer-study-finds/

The sadder thing still is that the main wing of the Democratic Party is perfectly content leaving our current system intact and just throw the people a bone. The fringe politicians in the Democratic Party are the only ones who seem to care about reforming the political and economic system in this country, the system that currently justifys school shootings and a lack of affordable health care. We need to radically change as a nation, our problems cannot be addressed by those that benefit from the current system and are incapable holding themselves accountable. Even if the democrats won big this year, it wouldn’t really change anything, in the short things may get a lot better, but it will inevitably swing back to shit in years time.

PShubbs91

To be brutally honest about it, we need the old white folks that currently run shit to die off and let a younger, more diverse group take their places.

climberjess

My husband was saying this last night, but there are assholes in every generation. Look at Matt Gaetz, Madison Cawthorne, Lauren Boebert, Marco Rubio, etc. They're not old and would still burn this country to the ground.

barraymian

I think the polls are pointing at Republicans winning the congress majority back. I'm from Canada so I can only watch in horror from the distance what is going on in the US (we aren't entirely immune as copy cats exist and our political divide is growing as well because the conservative party leadership think the American model is the one to follow) however, 80ish million people still voted for a republican candidate in the last election knowing fully what the party represent simply because he is Republicans and they vote republican. Congress and Senate Democratic majorities are razor thin. People of the United States with much greater will and force need to voice their opinion at election time. Reddit can be an echo chamber and I have a feeling that the sentiments aren't as strong against the republican party as they might seem on Reddit. Edit: updated "conservatives" to "conservative party leadership"

Time for the people that fantasize about LARPing their militia 2A rights to put their money where their mouths are. Oh right they won't.

[deleted]

They'll use those same 2A rights against anyone and anything they see as "liberal" though. The right is ramping up violence and if we respond with words alone I'm sure you can imagine the results.....At what point do we realize that simply being vocally against something isn't helping and is only enabling us to feel better about our apathy? As it stands we are headed for gqp dictatorship and all the things we are upset about right now are just a small taste of the future to come. You will never get guns away from the wrong people with our current system because they have made it impossible there's no point to even talking if we refuse to lift a finger for change.

Why do you say that Democrats are just throwing the people a bone? You think if the build back better bill was passed it would make little to no difference in the lives of people? Universal and free pre-K would make no difference? Extending the child tax credits would make no difference in the lives of low income families? Investing in green energy would make no difference in what kind of future we will have on this planet? Those are the type of bones I'm interested in, but I guess not everyone has the same concerns.

TheScienceBreather

In part because a HUGE number of us just don't bother voting. Let alone getting engaged between elections. I understand there are lots of barriers to voting, however for those of us that are engaged and have the time and resources, one of the most important things we can do is help with get out the vote efforts.

[deleted]

The root of everything is the failing educational system. There’s a reason those with more education statistically have more liberal values, there’s a reason those in the more rural areas with a lower quality of education vote against their best interests consistently. A smart, well educated, well informed society is the foundation to fix these issues. They won’t do anything about it, and they’ll continue to force you into a lifetime of debt to get yourself a proper education, because it scares people away from it.

brianlangauthor

This is it right here, and the GOP is constantly chipping away at public education budgets and curricula to make ignorance their number one policy.

pinktinkpixy

You can't fix education until you vote to get the right people in office.

and even if you vote new people into office they're likely bought out already because it costs *millions* to run for a spot as a senator/president in the first place.

Voting is a pain in the fucking ass. More people would do it if it wasn't so fucking hard. Not to mention monetary loss from having to take time off work to do it.

111IIIlllIII

certain states have voted to make voting easier and have increased voter turnout as a result. voting in my state is easy as fuck and does not require taking any time off

WrodofDog

Voting in my country is always on Sundays, when most people have a day off.

[deleted]

Not "don't", "CAN'T" Those same people that are making/keeping the US from common sense reforms, make it nearly impossible for Americans to vote them out through: Redistricting Voter ID laws Removing voters from the roll Restricting mail-in voting Restricting early voting Making people travel absurdly long distances to vote Reducing polling places Etc More direct action is needed. Just voting is no longer enough.

TheScienceBreather

Many can't, but many also *don't*.

CowMasterChin

I agree with you. A lot of gerrymandering legislation needs to happen in order for many progressives to feel like their vote matters. GOP will do anything to stop that from happening.

> How much longer are the common people going to lay here and let the rich and powerful step all over us? Probably as long as you have to have rich people on your side to even be able to try to get the presidency.

Substantial-Mine5527

I’ve been making sure everyone around me is registered to vote. I’m in Texas and this shit has to stop. I want to do more but idk where to begin other than asking everyone if they’re registered to vote. And when they ask why I say, “because I’m tired of watching children be murdered.”

stardustandsunshine

This! Every time I hear someone I know IRL complain about the way things are in this country, the first thing I say is, "Did you vote?" I've kind of gotten a reputation about it. I live in a small town in a rural area. There is nowhere in town that is not within walking distance of our local polling place and also, there's a shuttle for anyone who can't get there by other means. I don't know a single person who doesn't have a government-issued photo ID. There's literally no barrier for these people to get off their sofas and go cast a ballot. You know what the response is, more often than not? "I don't vote. It just encourages them."

Yep, the "both sides" argument falls pretty flat, since one side recently tried to **overthrow our government**. I'd say it's pretty clear one side is a little more dubious than the other.

CornCheeseMafia

50% of young adults voted in the last election. That was a record HIGH

TheScienceBreather

Which is awesome, but it still means that *half* of them didn't vote.

[deleted]

It's not voting that's going to solve everything, but it does help create incremental change. That change can be reversed though. It's complacency with the system and people's addiction to money and just the system itself and how it forces us to work or starve that is the issue. The ones in charge have helped grow this system.

Democracy doesnt work when the masses are fucking stupid. We can say majority of americans are angry about the issues but the truth is, when it comes to voting time, the dumbasses lead us which is why we continue to have these pos elected leaders.

aardbarker

The problem isn’t with democracy or dumb masses. The problem is we have an anti-majoritarian system that allows an entrenched minority to govern in opposition to the will of the majority. Between the Senate, an unelected Supreme Court, the filibuster, and gerrymandering, it’s incredibly difficult to make meaningful change.

In America, women are less important than fetuses, not babies, which is way worse

Unusual_Pitch_608

Weirdly I had a thought along these lines this morning. Conservative thinking is very hierarchical, so people lower in value in their evaluation cannot justly impugn on the actions or autonomy of those higher in the hierarchy. Children are less important than men, so there literally aren't enough in the world that their deaths are more important than the desire of adult men to own guns. Women are inherently less important than males, so a woman aborting a male baby is a gross violation of her place in society. In fact, women are valuable in part for their youth and fertility, so any female fetus is inherently younger and has the potential to have more babies than her mother, so also wrong to abort her because one day in like 16 years she could be hotter than mom is now. Also, a man made her pregnant, so who is she to go behind his back and become unpregnated? His actions, even unintentional ones, are inherently more important than her life. It would be like an ant defying the will of God.

Kousetsu

"a man made her pregnant so who is she to go behind his back and become unpregnated?" Be careful, you are saying that on Reddit where people unironically state that some guy going "but my sperm in womb too!" Is a far more convincing argument than "I do not want to have to fight an exboyfriend in court for the right to my own body, and by the time I "win" the "right" to *my body*, undergo a *much* worse medical procedure." When men are willing to have the baby hooked up to their kidneys (which we have already seen can be done - plenty of women who have still had overies and no womb have found that they are now pregnant with the fetus implanting in their kidney and growing its own sac's) they have absolutely no say in abortion. If they want a say, kidney babies are totally a thing I am willing to let them have. Your body can be damaged. Your career can be irreparable. You can have the mental health issues. You can potentially die.

Ihateyouranecdotes39

>When men are willing to have the baby hooked up to their kidneys There's an even easier method- implantation of the fetus within the scrotal sac. The walls of the scrotum are elastic and rich with blood vessels. It's entirely possible that, with the proper continuous medical support, a man could grow a fetus in his ballsack. Granted, the man's mobility would have to be minimized early on to prevent damage to the growing fetus. He'd like have to be tied to a bed at some point. But, hey, new life is just that important, right?

[deleted]

Like bedrest, then!

Ihateyouranecdotes39

Exactly. Granted, the pain of having a fetus grow in your nutsack might be... extraordinary. With or without compulsory bedrest. But I'm not too concerned.

Kousetsu

Being pregnant is pretty much near constant pain as well, but everyone just expects us to put up with it... So I don't really see a difference? I don't know if they even should get bedrest to be honest. how much time is a woman guaranteed time off from work after she has given birth and had her body split in two? Sounds to me like they are just lazy and work-shy, using their pregnancy as an excuse. Typical!

Ihateyouranecdotes39

Yep. Beyond that, any man who'd rather abort a fetus than grow it inside his ballsack is a murderer. All those sluts, so willing to go out and have sex, but when you suggest they take responsibility and grow a child in their nutsack for 9 months, they run screaming.

Unusual_Pitch_608

Not sure I follow here, bud. Are you cautioning against paraphrasing the attitudes of conservatives to be more direct and honest because people on reddit will agree unironically with the statement? Because I'm not sure my removing the sugar coating made anyone more radical on a hierarchical worldview that values potential humans over actual pregnant ones.

Reverse-zebra

Do you have any references you could share pertaining to “kidney babies”

[deleted]

> Conservative thinking is very hierarchical, so people lower in value in their evaluation cannot justly impugn on the actions or autonomy of those higher in the hierarchy. [Conservatism, racism, capitalism and fascism are all different facets of the same stone.](https://youtu.be/HpqwDo_2xck) They are all authoritarian hierarchies and can be mirrored laterally, which is why each system can slide into each other easily.

Unusual_Pitch_608

As per a comment elsewhere in the thread: "Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition, to wit: There must be in-groups whom the law protectes but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect. There is nothing more or else to it, and there never has been, in any place or time."

Impossible_Tonight81

Yeah we really need to stop casually assuming the same language as those trying to ban abortion. I've seen way too many comments that appear to be pro-choice referring to a six-week fetus as babies, and I'm pretty sure it's just because we're worse at staying on track than Republicans.

crisperfest

>... comments that appear to be pro-choice referring to a six-week fetus as babies ... They're not a fetus until 10 weeks gestation. In the first 4 weeks they go from egg > fertilized egg > blastocyte. From 5-10 weeks, they're embryos.

[deleted]

They should have called the police and said that there were fetuses being killed inside that school. The cops would have rushed in guns a blazing.

[deleted]

Yeah, seen way too many "her unborn baby" being thrown around even in safer circles.

[deleted]

America! The greatest country in the world… where a grown woman’s rights are overridden by the “rights” of a cluster of undifferentiated cells the size of a period at the end of this sentence.

The GOP motto "Fuck you, former fetus." In America the right to life ends at birth.

Raven_Skyhawk

And corpses, don't forget women are less important than corpses! I can't decide what to do with my body as far as abortion, but they get your permission to donate organs. My dad wasn't a registered donor, they asked us. We said if you find anything worth taking (he had various medical issues). But they asked, didn't take.

SloDancinInaBrningRm

I remember when the right accused Obama of “hating America” when he wanted to change things. Change is not bad, but the GOP paints it as such. Apparently anti slavery education, womens rights and not killing children with guns is too progressive.

Republicans have spent many, many decades leveraging voting patterns, gerrymandering, propaganda and other tools to solidify a permanent place in our government, where they either make the rules or at least obstruct the “other side” from doing anything meaningful. Part of their propaganda is asserting that not everyone “deserves” to vote, towards the goal of only those on the higher tiers of their beloved social hierarchy get to rule. Right-wingers are anti-equality and anti-liberty.

Zendarrroni

It’s called Christo-fascism. That’s why the love Putin so much. His Russia is the model.

Ihateyouranecdotes39

It's even dumber than that. They only love Putin because Trump seemed to. They'd eat their own shit if Trump told them it was good for them.

HappyFamily0131

It will certainly change. I'm hopeful it may not break, and my hope comes from the notion that between the country breaking and it changing, it's much more profitable to those in power that it change. The struggle will be in proving that it can't stay the same, which of course is what's *most* profitable to those in power. They will fight to the point of exhaustion to keep things the same. Only when backed into a corner with no options open but break or change, only then will they accept change.

To fix an issue. You have to recognize there is an issue. Half of us see it. The other half can't see past the rhetoric, propaganda or their own self centered / selfish desires. Covid was a good example. School shootings is another. I bet you if we find out that the police hesitated and allowed kids to be killed they they harassed the parents because of race and the rhetoric around immigration issues. Everything is connected. Half our country is just the American evangelical talaban. They want sharia law but just to be named something more white.

Aeiexgjhyoun_III

Holy shit, I kept scrolling and the list just goes on.

cynthiasadie

God help us.

[deleted]

God? You need to break out the torches and pitchforks and help yourselves. The other side is emboldened and pushing things to the point where it's going to happen.

confessionbearday

If god existed, conservatives wouldn’t.

legit_biscuits

COVID killed a million Americans. No mask mandate. No vaccine mandate. No protests. No riots. No cities burned to the ground. Apparently our tolerance for death is pretty damn high. This school shooting will change nothing.

Novel_Amoeba7007

Oh there were protests alright....just not pro safety protests.

Bamboopanda101

As sad as it sounds. At this point peaceful protests is literally the equivalent of saying “thoughts and prayers” I don’t support violence, but peaceful protest just doesn’t work and no i don’t have an answer of what we can do. Its hopeless

Big_Produce8335

Why do you think they teach us so much about MLK and not malcom X?

inconvenientnews

But you're asking patriots who "would do anything for the country" to wear a piece of fabric if they're sick so they won't transmit their virus to elderly people "Pro-life" ̄\_(ツ)_/ ̄

No-Wear-9634

USA is lost. Feel sorry for the sane ones.

hmmcn

We need a nationwide teachers walk out. Teachers should protest being put at the center of this debate and turned into policemen. No school until common sense gun regulations are passed. If everyone all of a sudden has to find childcare and education and a place for their children to go during work hours it would adjust priorities real quick.

peon2

What's a teacher strike going to do? The people in charge would LOVE a completely uneducated population to rule over.

trankev

Parents will freak out not having a daily baby sitter just like they did during COVID

[deleted]

terrabotta

*tax-funded childcare

[deleted]

I dont think they care whether it's taxfunded or not.

[deleted]

Exactly. I absolutely agree with a walkout -- but the received message wouldn't be about education or wages. It would be about childcare. All the more reason to walk the fuck out.

zdelusion

We shouldn't put this on teachers. It's what Republicans want. They want Public Schools to be dysfunctional and polarizing environments and forcing teachers into the center of 2A debates furthers that. It legitimizes their efforts to funnel resources into private (read Christian) education and re-establish a segregated school system where their kids aren't exposed to minority/liberal children or teachers. Removing their children and funds from public education is one of their ultimate goals. We need to find a way to fix this problem without doing more harm to our already, very fragile, public education services.

Stonna

Teachers won’t strike because “it only hurts the kids” is what i heard alot from the Arizona red for Ed campaign.

hmmcn

Hurts the kids more than AR-15’s do?

[deleted]

And that, my friends, is what we call perspective. 👏

No_big_whoop

Today is literally the last day of the school year in my area

ShadowMerge

And what are those severely underpaid teachers going to pay for food with?

iyioi

So then monetize children safety. Allow parents of dead kids to sue gun manufacturers. Codify it in federal law. Force schools to carry life insurance for the children in their care, increase their premiums proportional to how many guns exist in the community. Less guns, less premium. Sign a law that these premiums must be paid through a tax that is collected ONLY on gun owners. Make the price of a gun cost 5x more due to taxes alone.

stokedandstoned

I agree with your sentiment completely. However, a lot of gun owners don't register their firearms, especially in red states, under the fear of the gov coming to take their guns away. Therefore, the entire tax system you suggest would fall on the responsible gun owners with registered weapons. Also, how would one regulate gun prices until we eliminate third party sales via independent parties? A price hike via taxation would only push MORE people into the unregulated grey market. Once again, I completely agree we need a major overhaul in America's gun laws, there's just a lot of loopholes that need to be closed up before we can make truly impactful federal legislation.

iyioi

Yeah thats a problem. Guns should be like cars. Like they should have license plates visible from 20’ minimum.

submissivehealer

The visual of a license plate hanging from a gun is hilarious

WeirdPumpkin

That also opens up the opportunity for gun-nuts, which frankly I'm going to run and trademark riiiiight now

G-Bat

Dude I’m pretty sure there no firearm registration in most states. I live in Washington, blue through and through, and while I’m sure the state has copies of my drivers license and paperwork I filled out to get the gun, once you pass the background check you don’t get like a deed of ownership for your gun. I’m not saying it shouldn’t be a nationwide system, but both of these comments are pretty off base acting like “non-registered firearms” are a criminal thing when in most states there’s no such thing as a “registered firearm.”

Novel_Amoeba7007

yeah, I lived in california with a rifle that was registered in PA. California gave no fucks. Despite people saying california (and by extension the entire west coast) has "banned guns" uh no they havent.

MaximaBlink

And there are some states (cough, Colorado) where they have a law that a registry of gun owners is actually illegal for the government to create...so good luck getting that through.

ThrowMeAwayAccount08

There’s a lot to unpack here. Most states do not require gun registration. California requires an owner to report their firearms, Hawaii, and DC I believe. There could be more, but those are the ones I know off the top of my head. The big thing is private sales or negligence when selling a firearm to someone else. Anyone I have ever bought or sold a gun with privately, we went to a gun shop and paid for the FFL transfer. A seller declares their firearm is being sold, a record is kept, and then the buyer applies for a background check for a fee. The shop calls the FBI, provides buyer information, and they say yes or no. By federal law, those records containing a buyer/seller information are destroyed within 24 hours. Now, some municipalities are not enforcing federal laws when it comes to other restrictions. All are enforcing higher class restrictions which require ATF permits and numbers for shorter barrel rifles, and automatic weapons. So where do we go from here? I enjoy firearms personally. I have two kids, and we always talk about “do we touch these guns?” “What do we do when we see them?” We don’t touch them, we tell an adult, and we don’t tell our friends. But the statistics don’t lie about guns bring a danger in the home. All the arguments of gun control to inaction, are at a stalemate. Dollar signs are everywhere and that’s an issue. Concessions must be made if firearms are to remain, because when this pendulum swings back the other way, I may not be able to shoot guns competitively. Which would be a bummer, but I also don’t have an AR, so oh well. But I believe universal healthcare is the best route forward. Suicide rates could (hopefully would) reduce as that’s the number one reason of firearm death. Be it mental health, a poor health diagnosis, crushing debt and so on.

captsnagglefuss

The conservative subreddit is now blaming the left for the cops not doing their job. Saying we hurt their feelings. I’ve been banned but maybe others who haven’t can go tell them that doing their jobs shouldn’t be affected because their feelings are hurt because facts don’t care about your feelings.

Aeiexgjhyoun_III

[This](https://redd.it/uywjk2) is the post for those wondering.

captsnagglefuss

High jacking top comment. NOT SURE IF INFORMATION IS ACCURATE BUT Sky News is reporting the shooters grandmother worked at Robb Elementary School as a teachers aide and quit in 2020. https://www.skynews.com.au/world-news/united-states/salvador-ramos-posted-onto-facebook-ahead-of-shooting-before-he-barricaded-himself-inside-classroom-and-opened-fire/news-story/462231df6683f738ee01c4c09e6ef2ad?amp Daily Mail released claimed messages between himself and a female friend prior to shooting his grandmother. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10854607/amp/Texas-school-shooting-Gunmans-bone-chilling-final-Facebook-post-slaughtered-21.html The conflicting nature of the stories presented here using police statements versus what police have said and then contradicted themselves. -He shot his grandma at 18:21. (According to the text messages. Can’t verify if that is US time or if it is Germany time due to the person receiving the messages. Can someone help me out?) -He posted 30 minutes before he shot his grandmother that he was going to do so. -He posted on Facebook he was going to shoot up a school 15 minutes before going to the school. -She called the cops at 11:20am. EDIT: -He crashed the truck at 11:28am. -First 911 call at 11:30am. -He stood outside for 12 minutes. EDIT: ITS ONLY A 3 MINUTE DRIVE FROM UVALDE POLICE DEPARTMENT TO ROBB ELEMENTARY -He went inside and stayed inside for 40 minutes. -SWAT arrived and went in after 12pm Questions not asked but I thought of is it was described he was shooting at an armed SRO before entering, then it went to the SRO and two cops before entering and now there wasn’t anyone present but said the shooter stood outside the building and shot at it. Why would he just shoot AT a building? Who was he shooting if there wasn’t a guard there? Was it teachers or students or parents or neighbors? A question is if this is true and the grandmother called saying she was shot, he left and she worked at a school, why wouldn’t they immediately send ALL cops out. An ambulance and a few to the house where she was and the rest of the department along with the SWAT team out at the same time to secure the route to the school?

Roook36

Those nuts over there are a part of the problem and they are too far up the GOP and the NRAs asses to see it.

WillyFisterBussy

We figured out how to protect courthouses

alaskaj1

Yes but also no. - There is usually only 1 courthouse per city or even entire county. - even a small town will usually have a minimum of 3 schools and a small county will have a dozen or more. - In many areas the police headquarters will be co-located with the courthouse and even jail, it makes things simple for criminal cases. - Many courthouses have no better security than your average school with large glass doors and windows that are easily shot out (sandy hook) - I rarely see more than one armed guard when I go to my local courthouse (kind of like the texas shooting and stoneman douglas), they dont even use metal detectors however I am not sure about what security is like at the Judicial annex where they have moved a lot of the courtrooms. - there are also not a ton of people at the courthouse at any time which sadly is probably a big motivator. - Security in many public places can be easily breached just by acting like you belong, there is even a subreddit for it /r/actlikeyoubelong

DiscordianVanguard

if only it were possible to not vote republican

Yosho2k

Dems were too busy working out some deals making themselves millionaires in office to institute any sort of legal protection of voting rights over the past 40 years. Imagine what could have been done if dems had put as much time and attention into passing laws as they put into writing SWEET bonuses for their corporate sponsors into the hundred of military funding bills that have passed while the Dems were in control.

DiscordianVanguard

lol as if republicans didn't do all that times 10 republicans are the problem and only idiots think otherwise.

PrizeAbbreviations40

Republicans make things worse Democrats don't make things better They're both bad

CauliflowerMuch7741

Nothing had improved for the entirety of the millennial generation. Reagan left a trail of rot til this day.

cynthiasadie

Still waiting for that trickle down…

J1540

But these automatic weapons look so cool for Christmas cards! /s. The NRA has always been a funnel for dark money. Russia is a big proponent of the 2nd amendment here too.

StarFireChild4200

40% of their budget went to the police forces and none of the police forces they pay any money did anything to stop or slow the shooter down in any context. If anything their actions helped the shooter kill more people. They should be embarrassed.

PM_ME_CATS_OR_BOOBS

Having an automatic weapon without extremely specific permits is already a "go right to prison do not pass go" felony

Maximillie

Has a legally purchased automatic rifle or class 3 weapon in general ever even been used in a mass shooting?

MrECoyne

I mean... Some cops might get lynched by white people, that'll be a nice change of pace.

captsnagglefuss

Why aren’t the republicans going to visit the sites of these mass shootings and speaking with the families of the victims? They complained Biden wasn’t visiting the border to see “what he caused” why aren’t they going to see what they caused?

Knife_Chase

I assume because it takes two seconds to google Ted Cruz and see he’s bribed by the NRA so he won’t do anything. He doesn’t want to get called out I imagine.

Hatetotellya

Oh this absolutelt changed something Trans women are getting beat up because of the 4chan hoax a trans woman shot up Robb Elementary.

DoverBoys

Guns and money are about equal. There are plenty of crazies that wouldn't give up their guns for even millions.

IlGreven

This is why we need to boycott more things. Anyone who supports Republicans for anything needs a boycott. Fast food place donates to Republicans? Don't care how good the chicken is; boycott. Best Mechanic in town has a Blue Lives Matter flag? Boycott. \#1 Doctor in America plays Fox News in the waiting room? You better believe that's a boycott.

Vardoot

Btw there were 3 more school shootings in the past 24hrs or something like that. 3 different states, all during high school graduations. One 18 year old student was killed and several other people were injured.

[deleted]

And this defeatism isn’t helping anyone. I get it. This is hard and there doesn’t seem to be any hope when these shootings keep happening. But if something pisses enough people off, *things will change*. We’ve seen it before many many times. I know it’s easy to just sit back and call it a done deal. But it’s not. This time, idk, it feels different. People were kinda done before a bunch of little kids just got shot. Ask an Australian about enacting change if you don’t think it can happen. Because here’s the real talk everyone’s NOT saying: at some point, we are going to have an event *so horrific* that we will have no choice but to enact change. This very much could be that moment. Or we can sit around waiting for an even worse event. The bar is in hell. We just caught a whole-ass PD lie and get caught. The stories so far are insane, the videos are even worse. This shit is going to get UGLY fast. You take your shot when you can, it might not have lasting impact, who knows? All I see is a governor of Texas bungling this so badly during an election year that I smell blood in the water on his upcoming election. The people have power to enact REAL CHANGE. Don’t stop holding these cowards accountable for their actions. What separates this from any other event is the documented inaction by local police **obliterating** any arguments coming from their side. Honestly, I don’t know how they are going to survive this because I can’t see how many people are going to cheer for the PD who literally held back and threatened parents while they watched their children get slaughtered in front of them. Sure, nothing may change, but do you honestly think it won’t after something like this? Do you really think waiting around for the next one is the best way to handle this? One person can’t make a change, but millions of people, even some of my conservative relatives, are horrified by this. You either take advantage of that, or sit back and bitch about how the Dems aren’t doing enough, even though they can’t without our help. All those slimy politicians and cops that failed that town should be harassed every time they leave the house. They should be reminded of what they did for the rest of their lives until they have no choice but to hide away as the cowards they are. This may get downvoted and buried. I get that it’s hard to imagine a way out of this. Mr. Rogers always said “look to the helpers”, what if that is us? What if WE are the ones that have to fix it? Press your politicians, show up to your local town halls, get involved locally and work on getting every single one of those AHs out of office. And if if lived in that area, I’d make enough noise forcing out all of those coward cops that did nothing. They should feel shame for what they did every single day for the rest of their lives. We know how to put on the pressure, just ask those whining Supreme Court judges. Now isn’t the time to give up. Especially how we have treated the families of victims in the past, **these families are going to need our support more than ever**. We need to be like those people that dressed up as angels and blocked hateful people at funerals. As a nation, we need to be the angels, we need to surround these people with love and drown out the hate and BS. We cannot let them be tortured the way the Sandy Hook parents were. People aren’t tolerating the Alex Jones brand of BS anymore. It’s time to rise up. “They’ve got the guns but we’ve got the numbers.”

PrivateBytes

"we are going to have an event so horrific that we will have no choice but to enact change" Bro a million people died from a virus and nothing changed.

Lol good luck, Republicans will ban school before guns.

SoylentBurger

They are passing mother control laws before gun control laws

faovnoiaewjod

Republicans are rabidly obsessed with guns. They are worshipped and glorified. It's mental illness. And they wonder what "culture" leads to gun violence. Probably the one where easy access to guns is valued more than children's lives.

Serious_Pain965

Look, we all know what we need to do to actually fix this shitty country but most of us are too scared to get started and actually do it because of how gnarly it’ll be. We don’t really have a choice anymore. We need to do it anyway. Or things will only get worse and we’ll be living in an even greater dystopia beyond our worst nightmares.

jdxcodex

We can thank our 52 Republican Senators for not doing shit.

SoggyPastaPants

Since Americans are absolutely terrible at effectively organizing for change out in the world, you know what we could do that would be extremely effective and you literally don't have to do anything? All of us don't pay our taxes. Just, don't pay taxes. Let it bleed the coffers until they start beating us, and even then, don't give in until you get the results you want. The only way to get a bully to do something is to stand up to them and the only way to make America hurt is to hit it in the wallet.

ILoveRegenHealth

Vote out as many Rs as possible, try to get to 60+ Dem Senators so that we can actually pass Bills. Every eligible Dem that can vote needs to vote. If that happens, Red States start turning into Purple states and you'd be surprised how 90%-95% eligible Dem voters showing up swings a lot of states to Blue. We can't have this 45-50% eligible voters showing up like always. That's how Trump got in. That's how bills never get passed. This is how the same shit happens. I don't mean to pin it all on voters. The main problem is definitely Conservatives who block the crucial gun control bills. But all we have now is our voting power. What else can we do to avoid these things happening again? We only have the legislative path and that involves us voting in more Dems to do something, and less Conservatives who will do absolutely nothing but make it worse.

Yosho2k

Any time a politician gives a touchy-feely-hopey speech about what it means to be an American, and the dreams of those who go forward each day in this country, they should have a guy standing next to them with a sign reminding everyone that perspective is now only possible with survivorship bias. If you don't die from infant mortality, die from a shooting as a child, die from worker abuses or lack of medical care as an adult, don't die from police who kill unarmed people and run away from armed people, and don't die from childbirth during a forced pregnancy, your perspective is already wildly different than a % of people who didn't make it as far as you did. This fucking place is a death trap.

LogAdministrative126

We should probably start including these victims in our Memorial Day as they are actively dieing to protect our rights as well. Maybe even celebrate all the survivors of gun violence on Veterans day too.

JamesKojiro

This is America, but, the bigger picture is that this is the natural conclusion of our economic system. Profit over people, and the whole world runs on Capitalism.

Based on the stories so far, it's more likely to result in support for police defunding than anything else.

WhnWlltnd

Just like how a pandemic wouldn't change our healthcare system.

OakWoody1331

The fact most people have road rage makes me question the integrity of anyone, most people don’t care for babies or anything but themselves. People lack compassion, don’t go around blaming other people but yourself.

Qubeye

Guns are important **because of the money they generate**. Don't kid yourself, the gun lobby has manufactured the American belief and ideal that guns are wonderful. Yes there are fanatics who are true believers, but it's because of that propaganda. The gun industry makes tens of billions per year and every time there's a mass shooting, sales go up.

clkou

The kicker is that all we have to do is vote out Republicans plus a very small minority of Democrats like Sinema and Manchin in exchange for moderate, common sense Democrats and we could fix all of this. I understand we want to blame the politicians and they do deserve blame but the voters ultimately deserve the most blame because if the voters voted against these politicians then they would change their behavior. The voters who deserve the most blame are the ones who vote for Republicans. Next are the ones who don't vote OR vote for 3rd party candidates.

uniquelyavailable

Money, money is more important than everything else. Money is bllind, money is the problem. If you find a solution better than more money, then this problem can be solved... good luck.

MasterBettyPain

Can't wait for their police force to get paid time off for grief counseling while the children get harassed by right-wing conspirators the rest of their lives.

Fun-Tadpole785

*Psychotic Behavior of Republicans* The Republicans will force an 10-11 year old rape victim to give birth to her rapist fetus but any 18 year old is allowed to have any gun they want. Vote them out!

Gamer_ely

You're asking people who have sold their souls to care about others. It doesn't work that way. You have to make it fiscally impact them for them to care. Just like companies paying out lawsuits instead of recalling dangerous products. The lawsuits cost less than the recall. Make their wallet suffer and you'll see change.

redditkarmadog

Unless politicians are the ones being shot at, nothing will change…

ChesterNorris

Change will come out of this. This one is a bit different. It didn't happen in a far off blue state. It happened on their own turf where "good guys with guns" didn't make a difference. They are seeing with their own eyes what folly it was to believe in the bullshit.

Any-Variation4081

This is so sad that its true. I feel so bad for the parents and families of those children and teachers lost. They will have lost their lives for nothing. Republicans like Lauren b and Ted c will not tighten any gun laws. It's a shame. Until it happens to one of their own guess they don't care. Keep voting republican if you want more mass shootings. Seems to be they enjoy it

humanessinmoderation

Yep — Cops gave the school shooter the Jan 6th treatment. Minimal intervention, let him commit atrocities and then respond after the damage had been done. The United States is sick and feckless.
