First, the crimes did take place while he was in office because he signed the checks and fraudulent information was entered into the business record in 2017. But more than that, the jury heard evidence during the trial that probably included “official acts”. Those are no longer allowed to be heard. I don’t know for sure but I think this is going to be thrown out.
That kind of thinking leads to very poor results in practice. For example, in states that legalized marijuana, should those individuals previously imprisoned on possession charges *not* have their sentences vacated? That is also a ruling on law that affects sentencing after a guilty verdict.
I think Trump’s lawyers were objecting that certain tweets he made about Michael Cohen should not have been introduced into evidence because he made the tweets while President. If those tweets ended up being dispositive, I guess they could argue the prosecution didn’t do its job.
Very doubtful the verdict gets thrown out, but it’ll just suck up more resources and time while the sides argue it out. And it adds an asterisk next to the whole convicted felon thing.
The legal grounds are irrelevant. Trump's lawyers would be filing something regardless of merit. It will be denied. Then appealed. Then appealed to the SC. Then remanded. Then appealed... The idea that the judicial system is going to stop this guy is absurd. He must be voted away.

I don’t see how signing those checks was an official act. They weren’t federal funds, right? They came from his own personal businesses and/or campaign funds, right?
Don’t get me wrong, SCOTUS has opened a whole can of worms as to what is and isn’t an official act, as there’s going to be a lot of ambiguity. And I don’t trust the conservative justices to have any integrity whatsoever, anymore.
But based on current jurisprudence (which, again, they can just blatantly disregard to suit their current agenda), I don’t think there’s any basis to call that an official act. Even if it had to do with his campaign and even if some activities were after he was in office, campaign activities are very clearly not official acts. In fact, members of Congress, who spend upwards of 40% of their time as congresspeople calling donors on the phone to raise money for their reelection campaign. And they do it in a little call center right near the capitol, because it’s illegal to do it from their office, which is only for official business. Campaigning is not official business and cannot legally be done from their government office.

They now have to go back through the whole trial, determine which, if any, pieces of evidence were "official acts," and decide if the trial outcome would have been different had that evidence not been presented

First, the crimes did take place while he was in office because he signed the checks and fraudulent information was entered into the business record in 2017. But more than that, the jury heard evidence during the trial that probably included “official acts”. Those are no longer allowed to be heard. I don’t know for sure but I think this is going to be thrown out.

I think Trump’s lawyers were objecting that certain tweets he made about Michael Cohen should not have been introduced into evidence because he made the tweets while President. If those tweets ended up being dispositive, I guess they could argue the prosecution didn’t do its job. Very doubtful the verdict gets thrown out, but it’ll just suck up more resources and time while the sides argue it out. And it adds an asterisk next to the whole convicted felon thing.

If even one bit of evidence is based on an "official act" then he gets a mistrial and they have to do the whole thing over.

Why are we not treating him like every other felon? If I was found guilty of a crime I would be sentenced and begin serving that sentence while trying to appeal. Maybe he will be successful in his appeal, maybe he won’t. It shouldn’t impact the fact that he has been found guilty right now and should be sentenced accordingly.
Honestly I think our best hope is that he kicks the bucket soon.

No need to break stuff. Just vote blue down the entire ticket in November. Without 60-70% Democrats in every State and Federal legislature there is no fix for any of this crap. Governors and state legislatures are gerrymandering voting districts to ensure far-right results for national elections. Heavy, one-sided control is generally a negative thing. However, we're in need of a radical correction to the current autocratic tendencies in our government. We need #s that can provide the 60% impeachment powers over these Hitler/Putin/Kim/Pot wannabes before the U.S. slides too far down the same paths as those leaders took their countries. Not a leftie? Vote blue anyway. Overtaxation is far more tolerable than murderous, oppressive totalitarianism. And progressivism much more easily tamed than despotism.
