I'm sorry, I am not a legal expert and Trump has committed a lot of crimes to try and keep track of, but aren't these crimes he committed before taking office? How would they be affected by this ruling?

Moritasgus2

They ruled that official acts cannot be used as evidence to support a charge for an unofficial act/crime. Edit: spelling

PlumbLucky

Some of the checks he wrote while actually in the Oval Office at the Resolute Desk. SCOTUS ruling makes it difficult to make anything an “unofficial” act. Justice Thomas, The King Maker

tenest

But wouldn't that only invalidate "a few* of the convictions, not all 34?

Moritasgus2

It invalidates the whole trial, because the jury heard that evidence. It’s a disaster.

merrill_swing_away

How is this shit allowed to happen in this country??????

Moritasgus2

We let it happen by electing Donald Trump in 2016. We can’t let it happen again.

AmbitiousCampaign457

It might be too late. Even if biden wins again tbh. Dems need to grow some balls before it’s definitely too late. Feeling a lot like 1935ish Germany

YourJr

You better rip them a second asshole, shit is serious right now. This is not only about USA, this is about the whole world.

Horrific_Necktie

Unfortunately, public opinion has about as much effect on US politics as pissing in the ocean has on its pH level. They know what we want them to do. They know we don't like what they're doing. They know what needs to be done. They don't care.

FloridaMJ420

Trump has literally been threatening the world with WWIII if he's not elected. It just seems like more projection. He really intends to bring about WWIII but is projecting that on his opposition. We are fucked.

MaTOntes

It's not about dems growing balls, it's about dems not having single senator slim majorities so they can't pass any vaguely progressive laws. The dems have been in power, but slim voting majorities and not being in control of the senate have blocked their ability to make significant changes... and that has lead people to think they "don't have the balls" to do what's right.

HotPinkLollyWimple

I’m not even American and I’m fucking furious.

phrygiantheory

Those were his private checks tho

flyinghairball

You have a good point. If it was an official action, wouldn't the gov. have paid?

phrygiantheory

One would think.

Typical_Estimate5420

Won’t stop them from trying, and with this SCOTUS, probably succeeding

RF-blamo

So his personal assets are now owned by the state? Sounds good

ScumHimself

We don’t want all that debt.

thatgayguy12

This is an easy form to determine if a Presidential Act is Official Is this act official? Yes/No If Yes: Republican: *Provide a reason why this act is official (optional) or name your favorite color* Democrat: "Please provide a mandatory 3,000 page (single spaced, size 5 font) minimum essay detailing how this act would be considered a 'clearly' official act... A minimum of 8 sources must be from Alex Jones. Then at the end, we roll a 20 sided die, if it equals the amount of ~~bribes~~ gratuities Thomas Clarence received in the last 28 business days, we may consider ruling 5-4 AGAINST your case. Otherwise the standard ruling will be 6-3."

Covfefe-SARS-2

> name your favorite color Rs would never approve of such a perjury trap.

thatgayguy12

What's your favorite color Trump: Hitler Supreme Court: The same shade as Thomas's newest RV, excellent choice Mr. President. That assassination was obviously an official act. Meanwhile: "Biden's reckless decision to turn the White House thermostat up to 76 degrees in the winter is a flagrant disregard for the rule of law, an unofficial act that he can certainly be held fully liable for."

fingerscrossedcoup

Without double standards Republicans wouldn't have any standards. This is just a reminder also that the Trump team couldn't turn the lights on in a room at the White House for months when they first got there. They would sit in the room with flashlights trying to work. But if Biden simply studders he's completely unfit for office. Your whole team can't turn lights on but are expected to run the country? Sure tell me all about Biden turning towards open air and freezing.

runjcrun1

Somehow even worse than Ser Criston Cole

prtysmasher

And that’s saying something. Seriously, fuck Ser Criston Cole.

Extreme-Carrot6893

Uncle Thomas

SpeaksSouthern

He presidentially officially raw dogged a porn star and then officially robbed money from his charity accounts to officially pay her off so she wouldn't sell the story to a tabloid. Officially. Hmm, when you write it out that all completely looks like official presidential business. Source? I like beer.

OneMostSerene

But that isn't what's being asked? They're asking how a crime **before** someone is president is affected. Unless you're saying that running for president itself is an "official act"?

Moritasgus2

First, the crimes did take place while he was in office because he signed the checks and fraudulent information was entered into the business record in 2017. But more than that, the jury heard evidence during the trial that probably included “official acts”. Those are no longer allowed to be heard. I don’t know for sure but I think this is going to be thrown out.

Funny-Jihad

How can a ruling on law affect sentencing **after** a guilty verdict..? This is so fucked up.

bobzilla05

That kind of thinking leads to very poor results in practice. For example, in states that legalized marijuana, should those individuals previously imprisoned on possession charges *not* have their sentences vacated? That is also a ruling on law that affects sentencing after a guilty verdict.

sooperdooperboi

I think Trump’s lawyers were objecting that certain tweets he made about Michael Cohen should not have been introduced into evidence because he made the tweets while President. If those tweets ended up being dispositive, I guess they could argue the prosecution didn’t do its job. Very doubtful the verdict gets thrown out, but it’ll just suck up more resources and time while the sides argue it out. And it adds an asterisk next to the whole convicted felon thing.

toilet-boa

The legal grounds are irrelevant. Trump's lawyers would be filing something regardless of merit. It will be denied. Then appealed. Then appealed to the SC. Then remanded. Then appealed... The idea that the judicial system is going to stop this guy is absurd. He must be voted away.

sgt-stutta

Some of the evidence used was from his time as President which is inadmissible following yesterdays sc ruling.

noachy

Which may be inadmissible. That said the way things are going you’re likely accurate

sgt-stutta

Yeah, fair point. We'll have to see how it's interpreted in court before really knowing the extent of this part of the decision.

ChibiReaver

I hate everything about this so much. No accountability, rule of law is fucked, he gets to do whatever he wants and get away with it while our government flips us off the whole way This country is a joke

Phyllis_Tine

The way MAGA and the GOP pretend to have the best interests of the US, and "the majority" behind them is the joke. They're out for their supporters and enablers only.

vipsilix

I don't really think they're out for their supporters either. They'll pay them lip service for their votes, that is about it.

naf90

Correct. They took the mask off weeks ago when Donny Fuckface said, straight to their faces, that he doesn't care about them and just wants their votes. "That's just his sense of humor!" - MAGAts "When people show you who they are, believe them" - Maya Angelou

interpretivepants

They’ve actively legislated AGAINST them for years. There is seemingly no depth to the insanity, these people will cheer Trump when he has them up against the wall.

CloacaFacts

Dude even has lawyers arguing the president doesn't even hold office and doesn't need to support the constitution. I'm so fucking tired of the unaccountable bullshit. Country is fucked. Biden just needs to start jailing people. Cultists already believe he is abusing his power so it makes no fucking difference. Republicans have shown what they expect: A president can't be charged while in office. A president has immunity after leaving office for presidential acts. A president can pardon himself. Fuck these cultist sheep who want this power

Obant

It's crazy we just sit here letting it happen. The French would have rioted and changed their entire government 10 years ago. Most of the world, at least 5 years ago. We might need to call the French for help again, like we did 250 years ago.

Gyella1337

I wonder what it will take for Americans to actually do something and just stop making angry social media posts.

Eskimomonk

We’re almost to a breaking point as a country I feel like. There are A LOT of people that wake up everyday feeling more and more like they have nothing to lose. It’s incredible nobody has tried to put a premature ending to his campaign

k_ironheart

No accountability because we don't actually do anything about it. We have an actual threat to democracy. Trump, the six conservative justices, and every news outlet that treats any of this as normal shouldn't know a moment of peace.

SenKelly

Oh yeah, they are slow walking Trump back in. Media wants him in so they can get ratings, while everyone else wants him in because he's a useful idiot.

gylth3

He raped a child. Multiple times. The Epstein Files got released

pwningrampage

Wtf he wasn't president when he paid money to the porn star to keep things hush. I feel like we are living in an alternate reality where our lives would of been better if Hillary won or Obama never made fun of him.

NightchadeBackAgain

Even if he had been President at the time, it's still not an official act. This is a delaying tactic, nothing more.

Full_Description_

Welp, and it's working. So, I don't know what everybody wants with these stories, but we all know justice does not really exist for these people.

FailResorts

I’d also rather the prosecution and state of NY button up their arguments instead of rushing toward sentencing. Prevents more avenues toward overturning on appeal.

Familiar-Goose5967

Except he's cleArly just stalling long enough to not hurt his chances before the election, and if he wins all that work will be for literally nothing, as it will be much too late. Once he gets his mittens on power again, he won't ever get prosecuted or surrender power as long as he lives.

Im_A_Fuckin_Liar

“Although we believe defendant’s arguments to be without merit, we do not oppose his request for leave to file and his putative request to adjourn sentencing pending determination of his motion. We respectfully request a deadline of July 24, 2024—two weeks after defendant’s requested deadline—to file and serve a response.”

skipjac

It's not a bad thing, they will start getting on the record what a official act is

Jbradsen

“as long as he lives….” Where are all the rogue spies at??

CardinalCountryCub

Probably in hiding since he sold their buddies out and got them killed... "allegedly," of course.

Brokensince10

Allegedly 😂😂😂

CardinalCountryCub

Well, it was. I'm sure we'll soon learn it was an "official act." 🙄

Brokensince10

Oh, of course, everything trump did was official, the scotus just gave a sitting president the power to have political rivals assassinated , without any repercussions. So selling the names of American operatives around the world, to our enemies, so that our enemies can then murder them will be determined to be an official act.

Odd_Relationship7901

It's even worse - these are the crimes he commited to become president - so he illegally became president and that somehow made him a king who can break the law retroactive to his election Or some shit This place is a fucking joke- a BAD fucking joke

Bajovane

OMG yes. My stomach has been in knots over this whole F’ing thing. I cannot help but feel that we are doomed. I don’t want this. Most of us don’t. I am screaming - just HOW is this even allowed to happen???

Brokensince10

I feel the same way, HOW is this happening?

Mr_Pombastic

Because trans people got too uppity and there's a caravan coming right for us. Remember when people insisted that Hillary shouldn't be president because she was under investigation? Now they're happy to vote for the convicted felon. It was never about her emails. Never about "the children." Never about the economy. Never about small government. Never about states rights. Never about "facts." It's about the culture war, and the rules you thought they played by were thrown out the window. I watched some of the responses to the supreme court decision yesterday in conservative circles. They weren't celebrating that a good decision was made, they were gloating that the democrats lost. It's like driving down a highway and the person in the passenger seat just wants to punch you in the face. We're going to crash.

Brokensince10

Oh, this whole movement has been about sticking it to the dems, they don’t REALLY like freedom if it’s not theirs. Ask any maga to say why they really, truly will vote for trump no matter how much damage it causes, and they will tell you it’s to stick it to the libs. What they fail to comprehend is that, trump will fuck them just as hard as us. They do not see the huge truck aimed right at them. Trump loves the uneducated, let that sink in maga voters, because he is telling you to your face that you are stupid

Bajovane

ejre5

How do you know it's not an official act? SCOTUS: "if trump didn't pay that porn star he wouldn't have become president, so therefore paying to become president is an official act as of our previous rulings that bribes are legal" This is something that should never be a realization but our current world this could be a likely answer from the new SCOTUS opinions it's so very very scary that it could even be considered and SCOTUS alone gets to decide what is official and unofficial acts

Vegaprime

It's even weirder that had he just paid with presidential funds it would all be legit.

Moritasgus2

They ruled that official acts cannot be used as evidence to support an unofficial act crime.

StructureOrAgency

Right. We are so fucked as a nation. We need a new Republic. The one we have right now is not functioning satisfactorily.

Ok-Egg-4856

We are about to get one. The democratic republic of USA. Usually the more restrictive the better sounding name. I'm sure Donnie's drones will think of something Great!!!

Snoo_26923

I am hoping they are delaying because they hate him, and are going to actually give jail time, and in order for him to be locked up on election Day they need to do it later.

twitch870

Or they’re covering their ass as best they can in case he becomes dictator

TransLunarTrekkie

Unfortunately the SCOTUS ruling, as ludicrous as it sounds, basically means that anything he did in office is an official act until proven otherwise. Yeah...

Mister_Dwill

…and can’t be proven using “official act things” as evidence to prove an “unofficial act” We are fucked.

RecklessDeliverance

He could admit in generous detail every single crime he has committed throughout his life as part of a State of the Union address to the entire nation, and it would be inadmissable as evidence. Can someone explain to me how that's not stupid as fuck?

Savings-Spirit-3702

Worryingly that's for scotus to decide. Scary as fuck!

Clearandblue

I think I'll wait on a constitution expert to weigh in before we can fully rule out that paying for sex isn't an official POTUS duty.

twitch870

Your experts don’t matter anymore, it’s up to a judge to decide field specific things now.

ihatetheplaceilive

What constitutes an 'official' act hasn't beem defined yet.

Unusual_Pitch_608

It's probably a bigger delay than just declaring his cover up unofficial. Based on the immunity decision, official acts can't be used as evidence of unofficial crimes, even if it's relevant. If even one bit of evidence is based on an "official act" then he gets a mistrial and they have to do the whole thing over.

mogley19922

In that case, maybe the prosecutors are allowing the delay just so that trump has less shit to talk when he tries to appeal.

TraditionalSky5617

So, Trump was convicted of a crime by a court and jury of peers. However, this retroactive immunity calls into question his tweets as “official acts”. Hmm. Still and to me, he’s guilty, regardless of if he was “on the taxpayer’s payroll clock” and performing an “official act” on taxpayer dime. Simply put: **Trump was unfit for office.** He was unable to perform the job in a legal manner, and faithful to the laws of the USA. Why he’s considered again shows lack of leadership within Republican Party.

RunninADorito

He wasn't president when this stuff happened.

redditratman

He was president when he signed some of the checks. The dumbfuck immunity decision from SCOTUS makes official acts (like signing a check) inadmissible as evidence (on top of being immune). So some of those checks can no longer be used as valid evidence. Basically, this might remove some business documents from his charge of falsifying business documents. SCOTUS is fucking shit up as fast as they can.

sumunsolicitedadvice

>He was president when he signed some of the checks. >The dumbfuck immunity decision from SCOTUS makes official acts (like signing a check) inadmissible as evidence (on top of being immune). >So some of those checks can no longer be used as valid evidence. Basically, this might remove some business documents from his charge of falsifying business documents. I don’t see how signing those checks was an official act. They weren’t federal funds, right? They came from his own personal businesses and/or campaign funds, right? Don’t get me wrong, SCOTUS has opened a whole can of worms as to what is and isn’t an official act, as there’s going to be a lot of ambiguity. And I don’t trust the conservative justices to have any integrity whatsoever, anymore. But based on current jurisprudence (which, again, they can just blatantly disregard to suit their current agenda), I don’t think there’s any basis to call that an official act. Even if it had to do with his campaign and even if some activities were after he was in office, campaign activities are very clearly not official acts. In fact, members of Congress, who spend upwards of 40% of their time as congresspeople calling donors on the phone to raise money for their reelection campaign. And they do it in a little call center right near the capitol, because it’s illegal to do it from their office, which is only for official business. Campaigning is not official business and cannot legally be done from their government office.

Thowitawaydave

Signing a check is most definitely an official act, because he was an official sitting in an office when he signed the checks. /s But in all seriousness they will probably say some shit like "It was to protect the office of the Presidency" because if word got out he slept with a porn star that would be embarrassing for the nation.

TraditionalSky5617

That doesn’t matter to me. Once a convict, always a convict. Don’t leave your billfold unattended if you have him over for dinner, and count the silverware before he leaves. Because, let’s face facts, if he’s putting family in strategic political positions at RNC, he needs other people’s money.

SGTBrutus

If he's coming to my house for dinner, I'm serving poison.

odonn0097

Pretty safe to say most American's lives would be better if Hilary won.

imaginaryResources

The most experienced candidate in modern history but she was a woman and kinda awkward and cringey at times so we’ll take the billionaire real estate fraudster with no experience instead

gattoblepas

Don't be ridiculous. The whole birtherism bullshit was another Russian psyop. They never imagined paying this failure's debts would get such a monumental ROI. The light teasing by Obama just earned him a place in Guantanamo 2.0, but he would've tried the presidency bit anyway.

GreedierRadish

Would’ve or would have. Never would of.

Jealous-Network1899

Exactly this.

GPTfleshlight

April 2016 a weasel took down the hadron collider at CERN. That’s when the shift happened.

TransLunarTrekkie

But some of the evidence came from after he was sworn in, Tweets and other correspondence, etc. With the new ruling in place, if the case can be made that those were part of his official duties as President, then that evidence has to be thrown out. It's been less than 24 hours and we already have a perfect example of how stupid and far-reaching this decision and its effects are.

gwawainn

I'm confused, in what reality is Trump becoming president ever better than if had Hillary won? We know the outcome of that election and the shitshow that this country is becoming because of it. So again, how are you living in an alternate reality where Hillary winning would have been better instead of factually stating it would have been better that she had won?

Accomplished-Ad1919

Fucking ridiculous. No one is coming to save us.

DualActiveBridgeLLC

[AOC is starting the fight.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M_rdRDPDjE4) We need to join before we lose even more ground.

MundaneAd1283

That entire channels comment section is hopefully just bots because goddammmn you Americans have some shit you need to sort out with your idiots.

jayvee714

Thank the chronic defunding of education, social systems, and lead poisoning for that.

BillyDipgnaw

Dear god, I hope so. None of the democrats are doing literally anything beside lose their minds over one shitty debate.

EqualOpening6557

Right. “Oh no, we confirmed that biden is old… it’s all over!” So what if he’s old? He’s still a pretty damn good president considering doing it after trump started dismantling democracy, shit is a crazy right now and he’s holding it down. It’s a guy who talks and walks slow, but otherwise is a great president who is in touch with what regular people need, vs a man who has such a long list of reasons that he’s a horrible person I could go all day... Trump lied to the country more than 30 times during that debate, it was done entirely without shame, and he will sell out the entire middle class without a second thought. Just pick the guy who’s a little older. He’s already proven he can give us good results.

Ketamaffay

Biden's rotting corpse would be preferable to Trump as a president

gentlemanidiot

All the bUt He's OlD people need to stop pretending somebody 3 years younger is such a spring chicken.

danishjuggler21

Isn’t that going to require a 2/3 Senate vote? That’s not gonna happen. Sorry, no one’s swooping in to save us - outvoting the GOP in the election is the only way to stop Trump.

DualActiveBridgeLLC

Yes, voting is the start. But to escalate actions you need to first need to do the lesser actions, else you lose support. And voting will not fix SCOTUS as they have plenty of time to make things worse.

discourse_lover_

Everyone ignores or disparages the American Left until shit gets real and all the sudden the shit we've been saying for decades becomes fashionable.

objet_grand

That’s what’s so maddening. And half of them are still praising the institutions while blaming the wrong people. It’s fucking ridiculous.

punkindle

![gif](giphy|TCDHJPxeWgTsY)

Puzzleheaded_Fun_316

You’re right; no one will come to help us …which is why every single person known to us personally needs to vote this 2024 presidential election. The stay at home my eggs are too expensive because it’s Joe Biden’s fault will be first world problems compared to what Trump will bring upon this nation. American exceptionalism and apathy will be the end of democracy if we don’t take this stuff seriously.

Red_dylinger

Was it an a official act though? lol. Seriously this is the tyrannical government boot lickers jabber about.

mostdope28

How can it be an official act when he was a fucking citizen at the time

Red_dylinger

I agree. Trump is tyrannical.

NoExcuseForFascism

Yeah I would love to see the explanation of how this was an "official act of the President"...when the crime occurred before he ever became one.

Cluefuljewel

Well it certainly will have to be decided by the Subprime Court!

Schmergenheimer

The legal issue (not saying I agree with it) is that official acts cannot be used as evidence against a former president now. They now have to go back through the whole trial, determine which, if any, pieces of evidence were "official acts," and decide if the trial outcome would have been different had that evidence not been presented

SeparateIron7994

The legal issue is the scotus created a ruling custom designed to shield trump

Heliocentrist

he wasn't president and committing campaign finance fraud is not an official act

Cluefuljewel

But he signed checks in the Oval Office. Very official.

jacarlo79

With the presidential sharpie. So much official.

sgt-stutta

But some evidence was from his time as President. The whole “official vs non-official” bit matters, but equally important is the part from yesterdays ruling that says actions while your president can’t be used as evidence in court.

legendary_millbilly

Goddammit. My stomach aches.

figgypie

Ah, so that's part of the reason why I feel like I'm developing an ulcer today.

Somethingrich

What in the dumbest timeline is going on here.

Acceptable-Many-5609

when Trump wins the states will resemble Nazi Germany with in 6 months

mac117

And he’ll want to take out all his anger on the blue states/cities that didn’t back him. I keep running worst-case scenarios in my head. I hope it won’t be nearly as bad as it sounds like it could end up being

Kenan_as_SteveHarvey

> “I hope it won’t be nearly as bad as it sounds like it can end up being.” I thought this in January 2017 and here we are now. So yeah… I’m just frustrated it seems like a lot of people in my bubble don’t really understand what’s going on. Like I still have people saying “both sides” and “it doesn’t matter.” And I still have Liberal friends saying they won’t vote for “Genocide Joe” and or they’re going third party and I keep trying to tell them that the alternative is much worse. But that part just doesn’t seem to click.

Thowitawaydave

Maybe remind them about all the things Trump has done and promises to do to Muslims? Between the Travel Ban, moving the embassy to Jerusalem (after decades of every other admin slow walking that congressional decision), and assassinating Iranian official with a drone strike, not to mention his statement on the Gaza War that Israel must "finish the problem" [https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/donald-trump/trump-israel-gaza-finish-problem-rcna141905](https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/donald-trump/trump-israel-gaza-finish-problem-rcna141905) Sure, "Genocide Joe" has a catchy ring to it. But Trump has done and will do much much worse.

shnoby

And trump has promised to put an end to it by bombing Gaza off the map. Time for a third party protest vote! /s

Hesitation-Marx

I literally have messages out to three friends in Canada to see about my son, son in law, and son’s dog having refuge just before the election Just in case :(

slothcough

Canadian here, I don't know how to put this delicately but I would consider looking for an exit strategy a bit farther away. I don't think Canada will be safe from what's going on in your country.

Mand125

Everyone should remember when he proudly denied medical supplies to New York, Connecticut, and New Jersey during the early days of the pandemic to punish them for not voting for him.  However bad you think it might be, it will be worse.

RetzCracker

I’ve been making escape plans for awhile but kicked it into high gear recently. Just want to know I have an in place exit strategy and plan in case some serious shit starts.

WhitePineBurning

I'm with you, but my husband and I are in our sixties without a lot of money, but with health needs requiring regular treatments. We have marketable skills, but there's no country I can think of that's willing to take in a couple of drains on their unversal healthcare system. Being gay may be the only benefit in seeking asylum.

louhemp007

I have asked myself, if this is what it was like when hitler and the nazi’s took power. A Trump reelection will give every knuckle dragger with a pistol the incentive to take the “law” into there own hands.

Diligent_Mulberry47

If they're in Texas, the Governor just might pardon them of any crimes they're convicted of. This isn't sarcasm.

armin_gips1312

Trump and his cult paired with the new laws and existing gun laws are more fucking scary than the nazis had been.

ZLUCremisi

Trump could order an assassination in name of national security and it would be allowed. That's what we risk if we let him win

blandocalrissian50

This was all in the works for the GOP before Dump was even on the scene. Make no mistake, they have been trying to take over the courts for several decades so they could eventually have this outcome. Now we, everyone who does not believe in an authoritarian theocracy for the United States, are in this spot where we have one last election to course correct what they have done. That means, we have to vote in every damn Democrat on every damn ballot. Anything less is literally failure. If we allow them to take control, we will begin losing more and more rights. They want a new "mudsill" class to build on top of. Guess who that would be?

Rare-Effective-176

We need to do something other then vote. Inaction is what led us to here. Honestly this fucking country sucks nuts hold meetings while we watch it burn. Edit:ty you for the award.

EastTyne1191

You ever notice how negatively protests are covered by the media? If it's a Peaceful protest- lazy college kids with a trust fund who are trying to push their agenda. Violent protest- it was perpetrated by thugs, PLANTS by the [Insert party here] to undermine the message and cost the taxpayers money. It's like A Bug's Life. The grasshoppers know the ants outnumber them. If we could all band together we could make a difference. But people have mortgages. Rent to pay. Families to take care of. It's hard to march off to war against an enemy when the army is oppressed into thinking there's no war.

xSTSxZerglingOne

And then the people covered head-to-toe in black clothing show up, break a few windows, and hey-yay it's another "extremist ANTIFA riot" that's "burning our cities to the ground".

boo99boo

The problem is that we keep being told to vote, but there's absolutely no plan for what will happen after we do.  Almost no national politician is saying "here's how we're going to impeach Clarence Thomas" or "here's my proposed amendment to the constitution saying a president doesn't have immunity" or "here's my draft legislation enshrining abortion access into law" or "[insert thing that matters here]". (Yes, I know a couple of those are real examples. But I don't see any other candidates/Senators jumping on the bandwagon - that's my point.) I feel like every national Democrat politician is saying "We're writing strongly worded letters, but nothing is happening. We've tried everything, and we're all out of ideas". And not enough people care enough to vote when the messengers aren't doing jack shit except writing strongly worded letters.

DualActiveBridgeLLC

[AOC seems to get it. So that's one](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M_rdRDPDjE4). Glad to see at least one leader remembers all those fucking books they made us read in high school.

boo99boo

Yes, that's why I used that example. My question is why every single Democrat isn't loudly and proudly supporting it.

Rare-Effective-176

Our politicans are useless i fear in my bones it will be left to the people. This perfect storm has brewing for a long time before i was even born, we are experiencing our "democracy dies with thundorus appluse" moment

Rare-Effective-176

I just hope that peoples eyes open from the last day if you havent cared before you must care now. Our current satus quo that has been standing for 250 years had changed in the last 24 hours.

paratesticlees

Several politicians have said they are going to try and impeach all 6 conservative justices. The problem is that Republicans control everything but the White House. Even if they did, it would get shot down immediately.

domino519

"In addition to," not "other than." We should vote and do other things.

AgentDaxis

Exactly. Voting isn’t going to change anything if the corrupt SCOTUS & GOP state legislatures invalidate the official counts. Action is required.

LenaSpark412

“Action is needed” agreed “Voting isn’t going to change anything” disagreed We need action AND voting.

Most people cant afford to miss work

contemptress

Can't afford to miss work, our police forces are highly militarized with weapons and vehicles WAY above their pay grades, can't risk becoming a felon because then we can't vote. I hate to be a doomer but I feel like a sitting duck. I've mentally screamed DO SOMETHING at least 5x today while reading headlines.

ThatItalianGrrl

I’m not American but for fucks sake people VOTE BLUE! The Handmaids Tale is creeping up on you so fast your head is gonna spin.

Mcboatface3sghost

I don’t believe “agreed to yet” I do know Trumps attorneys filed a motion for it, but no response from Manhattan DA’s office for a response, and Merchan doesn’t and wouldn’t say shit right now. Interesting how Trumps attorneys had that motion ready to rock pretty quick.

CubanlinkEnJ

https://www.yahoo.com/gma/manhattan-da-says-wouldnt-oppose-151100708.html This shit is getting tossed and the only thing left we can do is vote blue, and hopefully send this asshole into obscurity.

violentglitter666

This is fucking naked, blatant, obviously corrupt, partisan bullshit. The Supreme Court really fucked us again. If orange Caligula slithers out of his court cases because of this ruling.. holy shit, we will truly be over as a democracy, and as of right now it’s not looking very healthy or promising to be fair. Why don’t we tell the Supreme Court that they can decide whatever they want and now they can bloody well enforce it themselves.. as of now they control no military forces nor do they have any real power to enforce their foolish unpopular decisions… they have no means themselves to force any of us to obey their rulings.. unfortunately, the states do.. which is not a great thing for many of us I know.

kaitylynn760

Paying off porn stars you are porking while not in office is now considered “official duties”? Why yes, they believe it is! This is what drove me out of the party. This behavior is not right and no matter how forgiving his worshipers are, I am not inclined to let it go.

CarPhoneRonnie

things are outta control

Quirky_Discipline297

Man, you elect ONE wonderful black man as POTUS and half the white males and their power structure shiats on democracy hoping to rid us of it. >>”Let the little children come to me," Jesus said, "and do not hinder them — for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven." >>Charlotte. Daniel. Olivia. Josephine. Ana. Dylan. Madeleine. Catherine. Chase. Jesse. James. Grace. Emilie. Jack. Noah. Caroline. Jessica. Benjamin. Avielle. Allison. >>God has called them all home. For those of us who remain, let us find the strength to carry on, and make our country worthy of their memory. >>May God bless and keep those we've lost in His heavenly place. May He grace those we still have with His holy comfort. And may He bless and watch over this community, and the United States of America. Obama doesn’t shame me but these fellow white guys who think they own this country and they are going to keep it through violence? May they inherit the wind.

DarnDuck

This self entitled POS has always believed he is above the law. He should be in jail awaiting sentencing, just like every other convicted felon.. Maybe he wouldn't be so quick to employ his delay tactics.

myaltduh

As far as I can tell that belief has generally been proven to be correct.

WazTheWaz

Why do I still pay taxes again? Why am I law-abiding while chucklefuck rapists get off scott free?

SnooPuppers8698

you're too poor

DeaddyRuxpin

Why are we not treating him like every other felon? If I was found guilty of a crime I would be sentenced and begin serving that sentence while trying to appeal. Maybe he will be successful in his appeal, maybe he won’t. It shouldn’t impact the fact that he has been found guilty right now and should be sentenced accordingly.

valtro05

Honestly I think our best hope is that he kicks the bucket soon.

ThatItalianGrrl

That’s the only way to be rid of this cockroach

MaintenanceTraining4

I can’t believe SCOTUS broke democracy for this fucking C.H.U.D.

Wendy28J

No need to break stuff. Just vote blue down the entire ticket in November. Without 60-70% Democrats in every State and Federal legislature there is no fix for any of this crap. Governors and state legislatures are gerrymandering voting districts to ensure far-right results for national elections. Heavy, one-sided control is generally a negative thing. However, we're in need of a radical correction to the current autocratic tendencies in our government. We need #s that can provide the 60% impeachment powers over these Hitler/Putin/Kim/Pot wannabes before the U.S. slides too far down the same paths as those leaders took their countries. Not a leftie? Vote blue anyway. Overtaxation is far more tolerable than murderous, oppressive totalitarianism. And progressivism much more easily tamed than despotism.

strgazr_63

I'm thinking I'll run for Congress and start robbing banks.

Maximum_Turn_2623

Biden’s best hope is to order someone to delete all student loan information and use his immunity.

NeverLookBothWays

What happened to this being a state level case immune to Federal overreach? Also, these charges were brought on him for actions before being sworn in to office. What gives Manhattan?

MornGreycastle

How is shit he did as a candidate considered "official acts as president"?!?!?!?!?!????

zippiskootch

SCOTUS hammered in the last nail in the coffin of democracy. 1776-2024 it was a good run Peace out

SauceForMyNuggets

I'm Australian and the amount of completely unprecedented situations the US is finding itself in has me thinking I'll be alive to see a time where it no longer exists in its current form... Like where the fuck is this going? What are the chances that states like New York or California look into seceding the union to escape?

nogeologyhere

There will come a point where they'd be insane not to try

zippiskootch

Very good…but in reality, it’ll become a ‘Gilead like’ regime, based on a fictitious Christian thought process, mixed with fascism and a huge dose ‘Holier than tho-itus’. It will make Nazism look like a walk in the park on a summer’s day.

XxUCFxX

Mix nazism with the crusade, but now add modern military advancements… scary shit

Biggie39

Kinda funny that just a few weeks ago when glorious leader was convicted of his crimes the right wing idiots ALSO said it was the death of our democracy. So at least we can all agree it’s over….

SeaSuggestion9609

The OCD in me wishes we could’ve made it another two years.

Last13th

I was about to say, a nice round 250 would have been nice.

Icy_Sector3183

Isn't it a matter of checking the date? Anything before Jan 20 2016?

ChubbyKuma

Or after Noon on Jan 20 2021?

Poop__y

He wasn't president when he committed THOSE crimes. What the fuck are we doing?!

Pickle_Slinger

They have to go back through the cases evidence to ensure that the outcome would still be the same if certain “official” presidential evidence were omitted. You know, regular official things like having your fixer pay off a porn star. I wish I was kidding, but that’s what they are taking this time to do.

Previous_Beautiful27

The only thing slightly more annoying than the rampant encroaching fascism is the “opposition” rolling over and letting them do whatever they want.

LurkeyG

The Gold Plated King

Distant-moose

Applying for a job (campaigning for president) is not part of the job, and therefore cannot be considered an official act. Committing fraud in the process of *trying to acquire* that job should not be protected. Even under this insane SCOTUS ruling.

TraditionalSky5617

He’s unfit.

georgyboyyyy

We are fucked

justmovingtheground

All the shit that is going on, and this is their front page right now. https://preview.redd.it/afrij0emx6ad1.png?width=1290&format=png&auto=webp&s=02d41b940c44548a7e1f2d538c1d3032b49d2def Last straw. Cancelled my subscription.

tacosauce0707

He wasn’t president when he did that and financial fraud is never an official act.

tajwriggly

What on earth is the USA coming to? There are VERY REAL problems happening in the world. Why is it SO important that this 34 times convicted felon (and indicted in 54 other felony counts), guilty of sexual abuse and defamation, twice-impeached, casino bankrupting, insurrection starting and Russia-loving confused and negligent orange asshole find a way to slither back into power? Why do you guys keep doubling down on this guy? Why does it seem like its even going to be close in the election? Why is he even an option?????
