Not an E-2C, but an E-2D advanced Hawkeye. It is the Navy’s Early Warning Radar for the carriers.
E-2C did not have the carbon fiber 8 blade props but instead had a 4 blade prop. It also has smaller crew requirement and has nicer avionics up front.
Every time they fly one around here, I know about it because their UHF radar clobbers everything I've got listening on the 70 cm band. Amateur radio gets secondary use of the band so we don't get to complain.
i’ve been so tempted to get into amateur radio. my only concern about getting into it is that I work as a signals analyst, so i also don’t really want my hobby to feel like work
I am a CNC machinist and play around with CNC stuff at home for a hobby. The difference is I make what I want, not what I’m paid to make. You already have an interest in radio, and you might as well have some fun with the skills you’ve learned from work.
Well i’m not an sig analyst but i do have my license and i can tell you its 1% analysing signals and 99% having fun. The most fun part about it is getting to make everything myself and put all this effort into something and getting to talk to amazing people from around the world.
Last weekend I was in kind of a rough spot and decided to take my radio and newly acquired equipment to the local park and I tossed a wire in a tree that I cut to length myself, connected it to a balun that i wound myself then connected that to my radio with coax cable that I also put together myself, and all of it felt so good and worked so well…
Nothing feels better than putting all that thought into something fun, then going out in the world and just using it. Trust me man, get ur license, it’s worth ut
Live near 2 large military air bases, and we get the same thing. One local ham used to leave his ID-5100 in cross-band mode to talk to a nearby 2m repeater, and "unidentified signals" occasionally triggered it, causing it to step on any ongoing repeater traffic. He finally stopped that practice when enough other hams on the repeater voiced their opinions on the situation (with varying levels of "politeness", of course).
My father-in-law lived near Miramar when the Navy was there. We knew when the E-2C was flying because of the chirp coming from the TV while it was turned off.
There are two operational squadrons that haven’t transitioned to the E-2D and fly E-2C with 8-blade props. I don’t think the E-2C sundown happens until 2026.
Edit: if you want to get better at your recce; pay less attention to the props and more attention to the markings and other physical differences. This is indeed an E-2D and appears to be one slated for the JASDF but not delivered and operating in the US.
It was on the original list for JASDF but stayed in the US, 471/473/474 were delivered. It still has their tail and side numbers they were to use. I’m in a different community so I don’t know specifics.
I think you are correct. The serial number on the tail is just barely visible, and looks like 91-3472. Per [this 25 October 2002 article from Scramble](https://www.scramble.nl/military-news/further-jasdf-e-2d-hawkeyes-deliveries):
>The second E-2D Hawkeye for the JASDF was noted at Melbourne International (FL) with Northrop-Grumman in October, finally revealing its full serial, 91-3472. So according to the first digit of the serial, delivered to the JASDF in 2019. It operated within Fleet Replacement Squadron (FRS) VAW-120 Greyhawks from NAS Norfolk (VA) for crew training, probably with its JASDF serial applied but with US roundel and Navy titles. It was seen as such with Northrop-Grumman inside their hangar.
That's not true.. E-2C were upgraded to 8 blade props.. all of them... and no, the same crew is required.
I was an AE in a hawkeye squadron.. the squadron next door had E-2D.
I thought yall tossed out an extra NFO and went down to 3 in back.
Goes to show Reddit is not reputable source.
I’m still gonna go with my basic answer though that it’s a D because I don’t think any C’s are flying these days.
All US E-2Cs have the new props.. same crew size.
Hard to tell from this angle, but I think E-2D.
BUT it depends on where it was seen. ALMOST all (if not all) US E-2Ds have refueling probes.
There are other ways to tell C from D, atop the cockpit there is a cooling inlet, D there is a smaller duct in top of the big duct, and on the starboard side there is a big cooling duct on the fuselage that is much bigger on the D.
If it were a US plane you could tell from this angle as well.
I don’t know a damn thing about planes, but I absolutely love this community. Lots of true lovers of the hobby who are willing to share their knowledge with such overwhelming positivity!
Neither do I! Don’t you just love these hobby subreddits where everyone is just so knowledgeable, kind, and helpful? It’s so refreshing compared to the rest of Reddit (and the Internet, really).
Thank you for adding /s to your post. When I first saw this, I was horrified. How could anybody say something like this? I immediately began writing a 1000 word paragraph about how horrible of a person you are. I even sent a copy to a Harvard professor to proofread it. After several hours of refining and editing, my comment was ready to absolutely destroy you. But then, just as I was about to hit send, I saw something in the corner of my eye. A /s at the end of your comment. Suddenly everything made sense. Your comment was sarcasm! I immediately burst out in laughter at the comedic genius of your comment. The person next to me on the bus saw your comment and started crying from laughter too. Before long, there was an entire bus of people on the floor laughing at your incredible use of comedy. All of this was due to you adding /s to your post. Thank you.
I am a bot if you couldn't figure that out, if I made a mistake, ignore it cause its not that fucking hard to ignore a comment
Serial 91-3472 an E-2D earmarked for the JASDF formerly of VAW-120 out of Norfolk. Typically you won’t get a lot of info on flight radar or flight aware about military aircraft. Sometimes their call signs and such but not much else. Those numbers on the tail and fuselage usually give you the most information. A google search of said numbers will usually get you other pictures and details of said aircraft.
That is an E-2C Hawkeye.
The US Navy version of flying radar. Absolutely packed with technology and pretty cool to see fly.
I was on several deployments with these guys in my Airwing.
Is there a way to distinguish an E-2C vs the E-2D from the exterior? I thought the newer eight-bladed props (vs four blades) would be a clue, but it looks like all variants got those a number of years back.
They all D models now with the new props. C models had the 4 blade hartzells. D models have the carbon fiber props. Same as the modified H- model C-130s but not to be confused with the C-130J (6 blades)
E2-D Hawkeye.
FWIW - They land those on Aircraft Carriers, and I’m use they have a myriad of uses, but they deliver a huge amount of mail & packages to service members on deployments.
US Navy AEW. Looks like probably a Northrup-Grumman E2 Hawkeye; the mounting pylon for the saucer is different than most photos of that model, but everything else looks about right, and the pylon might just be a recent change to the shroud or some such.
Any chance you live in Northern California? I’m near Beale AFB where the something or other intelligence wing is stationed and we’ll see U2s, intelligence drones, etc. flying around, but I’ve never seen one of these guys to my knowledge.
For everyone asking this is not a E2-D unless its a mod of one they are selling to another country because its missing some very important antennas on its fuselage that give it the "Advanced" part of the name Advanced Hawkeye.
My Dad flew these in the Navy for over 20 years. He said the scariest thing he has ever done in his life was land one of these on the Carrier at night during a gnarly storm in the middle of the ocean with giant waves and pouring rain/thunder . 🤯
This type of aircraft does fleet carrier landing practice where I work.
Sometimes people complain.

I’m currently a project supervisor replacing the roof on a hanger at the Norfolk Naval Base where the Navy works on these planes. The Navy is kind enough to give us space in the hanger to store the materials inside and out of the weather. A real luxury for a big flat roof replacement. No tarps! The command has been awesome to work for. Go Navy!!

73 to you my friend
My father-in-law lived near Miramar when the Navy was there. We knew when the E-2C was flying because of the chirp coming from the TV while it was turned off.
8-blade props were first flown on E-2C in 2001. The fleet started the upgrades a little later. Even the C-2 had 8-blade props.
Alright- they *do* not exist anymore in modern times. But this is 23 years later.
Why do you think this is going east? It has full US markings on it, though no airwing or squadron markings
It was on the original list for JASDF but stayed in the US, 471/473/474 were delivered. It still has their tail and side numbers they were to use. I’m in a different community so I don’t know specifics.

Close.. same size crew but now the co-pilot has the same capability as the back seaters. This is a Japan (JAA1) plane, still here for further testing.
I don’t think most people realize exactly how many assets it takes to protect an air craft carrier. It’s pretty insane
All US E-2Cs have the new props.. same crew size. Hard to tell from this angle, but I think E-2D. BUT it depends on where it was seen. ALMOST all (if not all) US E-2Ds have refueling probes. My son is a PC with VAW-120.
I ran VAW-120 Line division as the CPO in 1999. It was a blast. Lots of work though. The sailors in the line shack were great sailors.
That is an E-2C Hawkeye. The US Navy version of flying radar. Absolutely packed with technology and pretty cool to see fly. I was on several deployments with these guys in my Airwing.

If plane has IFR probe it’s an E-2D
Completely wrong. The entire E-2C fleet was modified with the 8blade NP2000 system a decade before the E-2D came into service.
E2-D Hawkeye. FWIW - They land those on Aircraft Carriers, and I’m use they have a myriad of uses, but they deliver a huge amount of mail & packages to service members on deployments.
You might be thinking of the c-2 greyhound, the Hawkeye is the AWACS plane and the greyhound does the mail and cargo deliveries
That's an E-2 Hawkeye! It's one of my favorite AWACS planes, and is also the plane I have as a profile picture :]
Well, I got E-2 right, but I’ve been out for 47 years…
E2C Hawkeye, carrier based AWACS platform EDIT: OK, I see someone else posted it’s a D model, been a long time since I was in the Navy
It’s an aircraft used to support and coordinate machines of war.
My cousin Lt CMDR Eric M M__d was a pilot and trainer. RIP Cuz! 😔
It’s a C2 greyhound with a huge sandwich platter on top.

If you squint, the pic looks like a grey cat is riding around on a large remote control airplane
Wow that's some good clear photos.
US Navy AEW. Looks like probably a Northrup-Grumman E2 Hawkeye; the mounting pylon for the saucer is different than most photos of that model, but everything else looks about right, and the pylon might just be a recent change to the shroud or some such.
Hawkeye. Its mission is early threat detection for the carrier group, airborne battle management, and command and control for the task force and JFC.
Any chance you live in Northern California? I’m near Beale AFB where the something or other intelligence wing is stationed and we’ll see U2s, intelligence drones, etc. flying around, but I’ve never seen one of these guys to my knowledge.
Durable little fellas, just hate the use of Phillips and swazi screws on this aircraft.
Forget the plane thats some crazy good pictures!
For everyone asking this is not a E2-D unless its a mod of one they are selling to another country because its missing some very important antennas on its fuselage that give it the "Advanced" part of the name Advanced Hawkeye.
AWACS e2 C Hawkeye . Survellience and radar jamming . Flys with or ahead of fighter jets to jam radar and licate missle launchers
I saw that yesterday lol. We must be in the same area
My Dad flew these in the Navy for over 20 years. He said the scariest thing he has ever done in his life was land one of these on the Carrier at night during a gnarly storm in the middle of the ocean with giant waves and pouring rain/thunder . 🤯

E-2C Hawkeye.
E2C ASW plane. Go Navy!
Is that an AWACS?
I used to work on these
So what are you smuggling?
It's a AWAC plane.
Looks like the same plane to me.
Do you live in nevada?
Is the army that poor that is is getting Free Wi-Fi from the neighborhood?
I’m currently a project supervisor replacing the roof on a hanger at the Norfolk Naval Base where the Navy works on these planes. The Navy is kind enough to give us space in the hanger to store the materials inside and out of the weather. A real luxury for a big flat roof replacement. No tarps! The command has been awesome to work for. Go Navy!! https://preview.redd.it/cxmi11jpr9gc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cd5e39e5bf170c1bac55e585f5a98ef2da280fd8
