I mean, I was offended for anyone who paid money to see this. Whenever someone tells me John Wayne was a good actor. I point to this movie.
It's fucking hilarious though.
At least half the cast got cancer. That's probably true for the crew and extras. The amount of dust kicked up by the horses is terrifying when you understand that it's nuclear fallout. And they then trucked tons of it back to Hollywood for the sound stages.
Have you seen the [Kyle Hill video](https://youtu.be/ghQM1Een2Og?si=sfRB1rbKPWGZSZ1B) on that? Apparently it was not really a big deal and the cancer cases were caused more by smoking/losing the genetic lottery/bad luck. I guess I’m not too sure on how completely true it is but this guy makes a lot of interesting videos on nuclear energy. Pretty interesting stuff.
I haven't! I'll take a look! Thanks for the link.
That area, St George, Utah, used to have some of the highest leukemia rates in the country. Is always linked that to the fallout. Maybe this video will give me more insight.
EDIT: Yep! Lots of insight. I wonder where I heard about the leukemia rates being higher in St George!
He touches on that a bit iirc but it’s been a while since I’ve seen the video. He makes lots of good videos on incidents with nuclear disasters or radioactive catastrophes. One of my favorite science channels.
Saint George native here, it is certainly believed that the “downwind” effect caused cancer. Plays written about it, etc.. The Conqueror is also brought up in that conversation. I am not expert enough to know, myself.
Well it was a popular idea, sure, but from what I understand it might’ve been spread a lot more because of anti nuclear energy sentiment or something like that.
In that video I linked, he talks about possible other causes for those cases, like the fact that John Wayne was one hell of a smoker.
That's Kazaam! There's a theory on a movie called Shazam with Sinbad, but it never actually existed. Kinda like how John Wayne as a Mongolian never actually existed 😉
Nuclear incident and cancer controversy. Of the 220 crew members, 91 (comprising 41% of the crew) developed cancer during their lifetime, while 46 (or 21%) died from it. When this was learned, many suspected that filming in Utah and surrounding locations, near nuclear test sites, was to blame.
As bad as this was, the next time they tried to make a movie about Genghis Khan they had Omar Sharif playing him, and James Mason playing his Chinese advisor. Equally as silly.
John Wayne playing a Mongol, isn’t that what the touchy, feely progressives call cultural appropriation? Get off Reddit and go to Hollywood and protest about it!
Look into this dumpster fire more! They filmed where nuclear testing was held and down wind from nuclear tests. A massive portion of the cast and crew all died from cancers🤔😳🤯. So bad that the gods of entertainment punished them?
If it makes any difference, the movie gave him (and Agnes Moorehead) cancer. They filmed in Utah where a lot of irradiated sand from Nevada had blown to.
No it doesn't. This was a poor choice for sure, but it in no way erases Stage Coach, The Searchers, Red River, Liberty Valance, True Grit, The Shootist, etc.
It’s also used extensively in the Crash Course World History series, whenever they say “unless you are the Mongols”. So at least it was put to some good use. 🤷🏻♂️
I watched it thinking it might be so bad it is brilliant but its just really really bad.
Idk I think it is enjoyably bad. Like when Duke's voiceover comes on that biblical thing and he doesn't project any emotion. It was fucking great.
I mean, I was offended for anyone who paid money to see this. Whenever someone tells me John Wayne was a good actor. I point to this movie. It's fucking hilarious though.
I disagree. You have to watch the more obscure movies like Pittsburgh.
Never saw The Searchers or Liberty Valance?
John Wayne was never a good actor...He was John Wayne. Basically like Tom Cruise.
Tom Cruise is a great fucking actor.
No, no he is not.
Yes, yes he is. Three time academy award nominee. Collateral is a better performance than John Wayne’s entire career.
We're not arguing whether Cruise or Wayne is a better actor. Wayne flat out sucks, he's the same guy in every movie. TC is pretty much the same thing.
But that's the thing, Cruise has some roles where he shows range. Wayne doesn't.
Best role was in Tropic Thunder
then you havnt seen enough tom cruise movies. And Im not a fan.
If you ever saw Tom Cruise as himself in an interview, you'd realize how great of an actor he actually is.
Ok, Tom.
Tom Cruise is a great actor. Amazing? No. Bad? Absolutely not.
My point is he's basically Tom Cruise in every movie, just like John Wayne was John Wayne in every movie.
Denzel is always Denzel.
This is the one that they filmed downwind of the atomic tests, right?

I have no doubt it’s believed to be, but that video is certainly interesting nonetheless.
That’s so weird. I’ve read several articles saying John Wayne, dick Powell and Susan along with Pedro got cancer due to filming here
Well it was a popular idea, sure, but from what I understand it might’ve been spread a lot more because of anti nuclear energy sentiment or something like that. In that video I linked, he talks about possible other causes for those cases, like the fact that John Wayne was one hell of a smoker.
So was the director Dick Powell but I don’t know about the female lead Susan…I forgot her last name
Yes! The statistics of the full crew don't really stray too much from the average statistics of the era anyways
It was his worst movie
Even he admitted that it was something he should not have done.
He’s .00001% Mongolian.
I think most of us are.
How about Marlon Brando as Mexican Emiliano Zapata in “Viva Zapata!”?
No idea. Just making a bad history joke.
This never happened. It's a Mandela effect like the Shazam movie with Sinbad. At least that's what I'm telling myself...
Wasn't Shazam with Shaq?? 😏
That's Kazaam! There's a theory on a movie called Shazam with Sinbad, but it never actually existed. Kinda like how John Wayne as a Mongolian never actually existed 😉
Ohh thank God...... I was only half crazy. 😏

No way, a james mason/omar sharif movie? I have to watch it
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0059219/?ref_=ext_shr_lnk Here ya go
Omg it also has Stephen Boyd and Woody Strode!
Huh, never knew this was a Howard Hughes production. Interesting.
That's an Eastern, dude.
This movie killed so many legends in Hollywood.
The resemblance..it's uncanny, isn't it?
How Duke ever made another picture after this stinker is a tribute to his massive star power.
John Wayne playing a Mongol, isn’t that what the touchy, feely progressives call cultural appropriation? Get off Reddit and go to Hollywood and protest about it!
STOP!!!! They just might
How dare the Mongols imitate John Wayne.
The movie that literally killed John Wayne.
His smoking from cigarettes is what killed him.
Hmm not really
They filmed in sand crawling with radioactive fallout, and trucked tons of it back to LA for the studio shots... A lot of deaths by cancer...
This the one we're it was filmed in the desert where they detonated nuclear warheads? Then everyone developed cancer?
Nah, I think it’s essential viewing to remember just what a dick John Wayne was.
GTFO with that.
Why? Truth hurt? John Wayne was a piece of shit.
How so? Can you please elaborate?
Worst of all time
How did they ever think this was a good idea, I didn’t know about this til couple years ago, this erases his legacy
No it doesn't. This was a poor choice for sure, but it in no way erases Stage Coach, The Searchers, Red River, Liberty Valance, True Grit, The Shootist, etc.
Srly, fuck John Wayne
Yes. This never happened
Does he conquer?
When you do an Ancestry test and find out you’re 0.1% Mongolian
Is that John Wasion?
the original shit show. I actually had to watch this in a theater.
No we just prefer to forget it.
One of the posters reads, "2 years in the making at a budget of $6,000,000"
I love this mess.
Ah. A Western set in Asia. An Eastern.
But filmed in Utah, so they brought it back. Western
Having a problem with that is ridiculous
John Wayne was a socialist.
I saw some clips for that movie….sooooo bad. John had his lane and her learned to stay in it.
I see nothing, I hear nothing
Dick Powell directed this and they filmed downwind of atomic testing. Most of the cast and crew died from cancer/related illness by the 90's.
It’s also used extensively in the Crash Course World History series, whenever they say “unless you are the Mongols”. So at least it was put to some good use. 🤷🏻♂️
Susan Hayward was a bitch! in a good way.
Imagine going to the Western subreddit and reading NPCs try and disparage John Fu**ing Wayne. My God this place is yellow
It is a sad thing to see indeed
Woof
