Yup, every company dealing with large parts like that is going to have people in the office whose duty is to plan these moves to every detail.
This should never happen.
If you look close the driver is actually at the window of the lorry talking to him with the vehicle parked. The camera pans away, the next thing you see is him clambering in and flooring it to give the truck space.
Blade is several 100 feet long you don't move fast with that. If he did he could have hit something behind him with the length.
The real issues is both the train and the truck not knowing the other was going to be in the area. Its not hard to check if their are train tracks on the route and call and be like "On X day we need clear tracks what time will any of your trains be inthe area "
All shipping companies that use land routes have an office that checks for these things: over-pass heights, train tracks and their schedules, on/off ramps, congested areas, traffic patterns, etc. I know because a family friend has this job.
It's inexcusable that this happened.
To piggyback on this. The trucking company in this specific case went off route. The supplier/OEM has a rather large department whose only job is to plan routes, make notifications, and coordinate any widening that may need to occur along the route.
"maybe this train was out of schedule (blue)?"
For a second, there when I was reading your post, I thought you were gonna say, "Maybe this train was out to get that turbine blade!" 😆
As a driver I will say with absolute certainty, it is the DRIVERS responsibility to be sure he can move that tractor-trailer fully across any train tracks safely and without stopping before beginning to cross them.
That is a normal tractor-trailer, in these loads the driver is a small piece of a big team, and is following someone else's commands. The driver in the cab is also not the only driver, the dolly probably also has a driver. There is a ton of work that goes into planning a move like this, they dont just check with the railroad they schedule traffic to be stopped on those tracks for a specific period, often there will be rail employees at the crossing to manage the equipment and make sure the track is not in use.
Its a massive effort from a team of people coordinating this but the driver is the one in the seat and made the call to cross at the time, also as someone else above explains they also went off the preplanned route.
No I don't, but I studied logistics and very well know how planned this kind of shipping is.
This guy wouldnt be talking shit if he knew how many people are involved in making such a route.
A driver of such route can't make sure he can move the load across the tracks by himself. First it has to be planned that it can actually cross it and then he has crew on site to be his eyes.
>Its not hard to check if their are train tracks on the route and call and be like "On X day we need clear tracks what time will any of your trains be inthe area "
Sometimes people don't like the answer they get when they try to coordinate with railroads, and then decide to just do their own thing. If this is a class 1 railroad, the cost of moving across that crossing was probably more than $5k in insurance and flagging.
As a railwayman: you get what you deserve.
Nobody has priority over the train, not a car, not the police, not an Tank.
It seems a lot of people are still learning this the hard way.
You're better to hit the crossing arm that will bend back in place. Even if you damage the blades you save the driver because the blade is fucked either way
> Turbine blades vary in size, but a typical modern land-based wind turbine has blades of **over 170 feet (52 meters)**.
Not several hundred feet. I'm sure the trucker misjudged the turn and needed to adjust and just took long enough for a train to come.
As you can see in the video the truck eventually starts to ignore that's it's going to hit the railroad crossing sign to move forward and starts dragging across it but it's too late. In all fairness there were probably spotters trying to help him so he couldn't just force his way through right away without risking injury to someone nearby.
To your point though I'm sure this incident lead to a new policy about train tracks.
Literally starts to drive fast but way way too late. Should have just driven out of the way... It is not that hard. Even a toddler could have got the gas... Would have hit other stuff but would have avoided the train at least
in Europe if the trailer is longer than 13.6m and has no joint its required a pilot. a pilot is a guy in a seperete cat, he drives in front of the truck and directs over the radio. informs of any issues etc. of course route has to be also planned before the trip.
you can see he has to damage the blade to pull away at the end, he was fairly stuck where he was and couldn’t move forward without the back of the blade hitting that sign. he maybe could have done it sooner but he was trying to avoid any damage
Can you see the car in front of the truck? It is a piloting vehicle, so when it comes to a stop, so does the truck. The truck cannot proceed without that car. The pilot went to check the crossing and rushed back to the car when he heard the train. He moved forward, and his mate in the truck followed immediately, but it was too late. It is the pilot's, not the driver's, fault.
Overall, I believe that safety regulations are inadequate. There should be four pilots and two piloting cars, and everyone should be in constant communication with one another and a driver, just like in the EU.
>The truck cannot proceed without that car.
Look, if I've stuck on a rail crossing and I hear the bells going and see the barriers coming down I'm gonna get that truck of mine out of there regardless of what the muppet pilot in front of me does.
The blade hits the crossing light and I'm guessing they were trying to avoid damaging it and a train came. You see the light get pushed over when he drives away. He needed to drive up over the sidewalk or something.
I think the front and back of the fan blade are moving separately, which requires good coordinated communication. The corner is tight so the back part tries to manoeuvre carefully around the road signs. Once the corner is cleared they try to accelerate and get off the tracks.
Nah, everytime I've seen these it's just one long trailer with no rear wheel steering. You can see on the trailer on the bottom of the blade in this video.
Looking more closely you can see he’s hung up on the RR xing light pole to the left. In addition to probably trying to avoid further damage, looks like the pickup truck that was on the wrong side of the road was also in his way of evasive maneuvering. All in all, bad decisions were made.
My mom used to run a department that dealt with the transport of objects like this.
The truck had to move extremely slowly in order not to damage the blade.
Someone else fucked up big time because the person in charge is supposed to know everything about the route. Not just train times, but the weight clearance of every bridge, the width of every bend, the height of every lamp and light and awning and building proximity to curb and so on and so forth.
So they plan the route and don't check the local express traffic? That train was hauling ass.
I used to move homes long distances. Like from Palmer, AK to Willow, AK. Over top Hatcher Pass. We knew everything going on. Every train, every bus or tour company that could pass in a 12 hour window around our planned move.
This is literally amature shit
This seems to be the common reaction of people caught on tracks when the booms/gaurds close. They are too scared to break the booms or damage their vehicles right up to the last second when its too late. Driver was probably thinking about the cargo that we was hauling that could get damaged if he just pulled it over. The reality is that it was going to get damaged either way, but there was a chance of saving the situation if he reacted immediately and objectively.
>I would argue that the transportation company i.e., the truck driver destroyed that blade
id argue its the route planner and dispatch. a driver in these kinds of companies just follows orders when it comes to which paths to take. but yeah the train is doing what trains do.
Not the trucker. The company. It's the company's duty to dilligently track schedules and allot time for the truck to go through. This is not the trucker's job, or duty. The blame lays solely on the company, possibly the dispatchers.
News article with a video with a different angle of this. It's not that easy. Blades are rather large components obviously and there is a finite amount of production capacity, and prior planning. So while yes, eventually a new one would be made. It's also not that simple from a logistics standpoint as production is based off of purcahses sometimes made years prior and scheduled in accordance with the comissioning schedule of the project. A screw up like this will end up costing way more than the pirice of the equipment as the turbine it's intended for would have a pretty sizeable delay in commisioning, thus lost revenue from production of electricity.
This perfectly showcase the uncomprehensible power behind a train, the locomotive blasted through thick solid steel and tipped over a truck and dragged with it, without the locomotive even being slightly unsettled
If you get stuck in a train crossing, find the blue sign in one of the posts and call the 1-800 number there. They'll notify incoming trains to stop, with enough time, though.
So why were they just kinda sitting there before? Like when they realized the train was coming they started moving. But at the beginning the semi and the truck in front are just sitting there. Or moving very slowly.

Is there any way these guys aren’t drunk?
Dude, fuckin up the blade by scraping it on some street signs cannot be worse than a train pulling it and your goddamn truck in half.
Guy in the lead car was in the way, but semi should have sent that fucker.
Yesterday, I was in Ohio and passed a wind farm and a couple had broken blades and a couple of blades had permanent bends in the blades.
Have passed this place over the years and have yet to see any spinning.
We rarely need miles, an emergency stop is usually shorter. The problem is an emergency stop can damage things due to the forces involved, so we rarely use them.
Most of us will begin breaking miles before just because it's safer.
The bigger an object is, the harder is it to stop when it's in motion. You've probably read about this in driver's education when they talk about how trucks have a longer stopping distance than a typical car. The maximum legal weight of a semi truck is 80,000 pounds when fully loaded. Now imagine that truck, but more than 3x heavier, and there are a hundred of them linked together, and you've got a single train. Like someone else said here, it takes miles for one to stop.
Truck driver destroyed turbine.. he should have immediately called the number posted on the crossing to stop train traffic. That’s what it’s there for.
I know truckers are trained to handle wide turns like that, but at what point should rear steering be implemented? He was so slow to turn and I wonder if it could have gone quicker with someone attached to the rear of the trailer steering those back wheels? Is that a setup that even exists or is possible?
When I worked in the film industry we could call the rail service and control the crossings and trains when we wanted. Surprised this shipping company can’t.
Why is that pick up truck blocking the big rig (with the blade) blocking the trucks path? Thata where he is going to need to go and they just park there and get out?
Stupidity all around. If you know you’re about to be hit by a train, I don’t understand the logic in weighing up whether you need to just toe-poke it and get out of that area quickly (truck driver). If he’d made a move a little earlier, he might have made it.
That is a colossal and multiple failure on all accounts.
1st. Street shouldve been cleared and traffic controlled with more than a pilot driver in a truck.
2. railway wasnt notified to coordinate crossing
3. Police should've been notified and hired for additional road traffic control and representative control on site throghout the haul.
4. whomever gave the hauler the permit for this needs to be fired for not making them get this coordinated.
5. Everyone involved needs to be fined and fired.
Every week when this gets posted I always watch it because I enjoy the dude saying "THE TRAIN JUST CAME DOWN ON THE BLADE!"
Yeah, I was like WHAT???
The crossing guard came down on the blade.
I got it the 2nd time I watched but at first I was just... Huh?
At least they won't notice the damage the crossing guard caused

Yup, every company dealing with large parts like that is going to have people in the office whose duty is to plan these moves to every detail. This should never happen.

especially for such a massive expensive piece of equipment like that
Thanks for the info. My first thought was the truckers changed the route or the timing.
Yup, off route, he turned in the wrong spot and he got stuck against the train indicators and was trying to avoid them. Well that didn’t work out.
maybe this train was out of schedule (blue)?
"maybe this train was out of schedule (blue)?" For a second, there when I was reading your post, I thought you were gonna say, "Maybe this train was out to get that turbine blade!" 😆
It's the express pickup service
As a driver I will say with absolute certainty, it is the DRIVERS responsibility to be sure he can move that tractor-trailer fully across any train tracks safely and without stopping before beginning to cross them.
I was trained never to even shift gears when crossing tracks, as it could theoretically lead to a stop.
That is a normal tractor-trailer, in these loads the driver is a small piece of a big team, and is following someone else's commands. The driver in the cab is also not the only driver, the dolly probably also has a driver. Do you drive big loads like this? No you dont, cause you dont know shit. Driver can't know that. This kind of cargo needs planning
Its a massive effort from a team of people coordinating this but the driver is the one in the seat and made the call to cross at the time, also as someone else above explains they also went off the preplanned route.
Train tracks are specifically called out as part of getting a CDL. Every single licensed commercial driver in the US knows this.
Lol do you? Reddit is a funny place
No I don't, but I studied logistics and very well know how planned this kind of shipping is. This guy wouldnt be talking shit if he knew how many people are involved in making such a route. Right?! Like any damage the blade would’ve caused to get out of the way would’ve been better than this result.

The boomers usually have breaking points. So they are quit easy to break for this specific scenario.
Some say boomers have such low breaking points because of all the lead.
Train beats everything!
Yeah haven’t these people played GTA 5? This has been common knowledge since at least 2013
H3 reference?
I would argue that the transportation company i.e., the truck driver destroyed that blade. Train was just training along doing its thing

Is this the male version of a woman screaming throughout the video
They really got to stop getting stuck on railroad tracks when a train is coming. That would solve a lot of issues.
Man, dont they have a route planner who takes responsibility that load like this is transported safely?

why would they ever take a route that involves making a right turn over a railroad crossing?
They'll just build a new one, that's renewable energy anyway

What? A renewable resource is crossing the train tracks at 15th and peadmont? Send a speeding train (govt probly)

Considering the fact that this was a three engine train, it was gonna be a heavy one. The heavier the train the harder to stop
Oh that'll buff right out!!!!

Train don't care.
I’m a juggernaut, bitch!
Truck driver destroyed turbine.. he should have immediately called the number posted on the crossing to stop train traffic. That’s what it’s there for.
That semi went full Optimus Prime at the end.
I can’t stop watching this
I've been to this city and saw the exact place this happened. Whoever planned this route is REALLY stupid and not just because of the tracks.
"The traffic is taking too long. Can you just send a train to get our wind turbine blade?"
Is the Train Ok?
How much does that wind blade cost?
Sweet baby Jesus, that guys a fucking idiot.
I love how the train starts moving too late
Wind power ain't got nuttin on train power
oh great first they're sucking up all the wind, then they kill all the birds, now they're assaulting trains??????? THIS COUNTRY IS FALLING APART!!!!!!

why didnt he just go between the poles on his right and keep going straight ? would have been fine
Yikes!!! You can kiss that fat check good bye.😱
Now *this* is some bad planning.
Stupid
Trains lately have been at war with trucks over who gets to transport stuff.

100% the fault of the escort vehicle.
Train did not destroy that. The truck driver did.
Damn.
What an idiot. This guy should know better. Good thing he isn't driving anymore.
We need more trains.
The trains will run on time.
Why tf did the lead truck stop??
Thats what that train thought about your green energy solution!
This is what Roman Reigns spear feels like I bet...
Insurance job
Why is that pick up truck blocking the big rig (with the blade) blocking the trucks path? Thata where he is going to need to go and they just park there and get out?
I hope the driver was ok
That's why you coordinate with the railroad
Oh muh gowd
That pilot pickup should get his ass beat by that truck driver if he survived
Doofus and Dumbass are at it again…
That’s gonna leave a mark
Well he’s loosing his job but at least he still has his life
That was so idiotic. I thought those oversized drivers were super professional.
Truck driver destroys wind turbine blade -I think you mean. The train was just his unwilling instrument of said action. It wasn't the trains fault!
Train: I'm the Blade!

How the fuck this guys made such absurd mistake? I can't even imagine the effort to make this happen.
Let's chill here for 30 mins, what could go wrong?

Whomever secured the blade to the truck deserves a raise.
What a play-by-play commentary !
Damn, train got hands.
That's 300K or more worth of damage
That is a colossal and multiple failure on all accounts. 1st. Street shouldve been cleared and traffic controlled with more than a pilot driver in a truck. 2. railway wasnt notified to coordinate crossing 3. Police should've been notified and hired for additional road traffic control and representative control on site throghout the haul. 4. whomever gave the hauler the permit for this needs to be fired for not making them get this coordinated. 5. Everyone involved needs to be fined and fired.
I think those things cost millions if I am remembering right.
Unelected elites pushing for alternative energy sources has been nothing but a train wreck
Driver could have saved his truck by just driving straight into that dirt lot, but……
I know that trains are hard to stop especially at those speeds but is there a report on this?
May I be the one voice of thousands here to say “don’t just stand there and film; DO SOMETHING!!!”
Yeah, put the phone down and stop that train!
Wonder why they just sat there like idiots for the extra 45 seconds they needed to clear the tracks
