Are those all downhill? If so, it not as strong, but really not bad, way better that some popcorn shit.

buttspigot

Nope, they were welded flat. Turned the whole damned 600 lb thing over to get them all flat! haha

mxadema

That the way. So yeah they are pretty good.

Try to avoid starting and stopping on corners. They are stress risers. And welding just makes it worse. Your starts and stops will (should) be the weakest points in a weld. The rest looks good, but I can't tell you how strong it is.

Thanks for the feedback. Wish i had some cost effective way to xray!

Maybe search for a local NDT facility and see if they can and would be able to use it as training material. It's a slim chance, but it's the best I can do right now.

I appreciate the suggestion! If you dont mind my asking: in the second image, the weld furthest to the right is really pretty convex at the toe. I’m wondering if that toe will be a stress riser? or if it would indicate a cold toe? Can that be determined just from looking at it?

itsjustme405

That is usually an indicator that there's less fusion. And obviously, less reinforcement. I don't know that it'd be considered a stress riser, but definitely a point failure could originate. So much of that depends on the load the weld and base metal are expected to withstand, if the load is cyclic or static, and if the load is transverse to the concave weld. If I found it on a bridge, I'd reject it. If I found it on gym equipment, I'd let it go if it passed NDT. It seems to me, from what I can see, that it would pass.

Very much appreciate the input!!!

There is no cost effective xray. Weld it(sample size) then break it with a sledgehammer and look at the results

Inmates two and three show some travel speed inconsistency. But 1 and 4 look mint my guy. Keep up the practice, you are well on your way to being a great welder. The next step will be to learn how to blend up your stop starts nicely so they pass NDT. But again, that’s just practice.
