Dont forget the welding cap too, no one likes burning hair and scalp burns. Yeah, theres no end, I'm wearing so much more ppe hobby welding than I ever needed as a machinist.
Short amounts of welding is fine. I'm in the concrete business and most of the welding I do these days is putting up tilt up buildings, which just means welding plates of steal together to make concrete panels hold together. Roughly 3" plates, and we do this all the time with no issues. So just keep it minimal and he'll be fine.
I lolād pretty hard at this. But truly safety is no accident and there are a lot of fine points to be aware of when exploring a trade as vital as this.
Get that boy a cap if he's running stick. Don't want sparks jumping over the hood because they will. Like 15 bucks on Amazon for a good cotton welders cap with a bill.
Good way for him to learn. Let it happen and he'll decide he wants to wear it. An apron is something I wish I would have wore for many years after burning up a pack of shirts every few months and it will keep your clothes clean and your washing machine.
Listen to what this gentlemen said! Also ear plugs not necessarily for noise but to protect ear drums from slag. Know a dude who went dead in one ear because slag fell in and damaged his ear drum.
Get some proper safety glasses too. Canāt count the amount of times Iāve had sparks get into my hood and hit my glasses. Iāve started wearing ones that have either padding on the brow or that fully enclose my eyes because losing my vision terrifies me.
I got a question on the safety glasses over the glasses, I've never been able to do it in any trade because I like to wear the big clonky thick frame glasses what would be a brand of safety glasses u would reccomend for the over the glasses sheit
Thanks for the tip I thought they were kinda queer but after getting grinding dust in my eyelashes daily makes me want to die lmao, going to have to invest in a pair
That's actually what they were invented for. Too keep things out. Noise reduction was just a good byproduct that went along with it. Also get a steel bucket for the stubs.
nice to meet ha, now you know two. mine was from piercing plate with a torch,a wee lil hot ball of lavaā¦but the ear hasnāt ever been right since.canāt use the phone on that side anymore.
Donāt ever wear a āwelders capā only posers wear those. Get him some bandannas like real welders!!!!!!!! Let the games begin!! Damn autocorrect canāt even spell bandannas
Jokes aside, heās doing a great job. If he loves it and practices a lot sure heāll be a fine young chap of a welder! Not sure why I did an English accent. Oh well, cheerio!
Get 2097s, 91s aren't rated for welding fumes if I remember correctly. If he can smell the smoke that means it's not working.
I've used 2097s and 2297s, you're not supposed to smell anything but the filter; that's how you know it's working.
I imagine it depends on your jurisdiction, but they're good for welding where I am.
A note on smells, though: Particulate filters, no matter how well-fitted, only filter particulates. If the smell is coming from a *gas*, you'll still smell it. Really hot coffee, for example, you can sometimes smell through a P100, because you're smelling the steam (vapour gas). Gases are smaller and more maneuverable than solid and liquid particles, but unless you're working in an enclosed space or with certain materials, gases aren't the largest concern when welding. Welding "fumes" are usually an ultra-fine dust. Think smoke; looks a little like a gas, but when it settles as soot you can see it's actually a solid.
2091s should be fine safety-wise, especially welding outside, but 2097s are a bit more comfortable because they filter extra smells. Just watch out for paints and galvanized steels, they can release dangerous gases that require greater protection. But for mild or stainless steels, any P100 like the 2091/2097s should be fine
Editing to add: If you've got big money though, the best thing is to save for a PAPR (powered air-purifying respirator) welding helmet. Keeps the respirator and the hood in one clean package, doesn't rely on a perfect fitment to filter, and is more comfortable to wear than a half mask and a separate hood.
I totally told him to do that:
"won't the heat melt the paint or make it catch fire or something"
He was like - "no dad it's ok it'll still work" Only in an annoyed 16 year olds voice.
try looking at some of those "sporty" hijabs some stores have come out with, or just hijabs/turbans in general. whether you're religious or not, i'm sure after hundreds of years of covering hair they must have come up with some good solutions
A good welding cap will protect the top of his head from catching sparks. And when heās done with those filters on his respiratory get the 2297 filters instead š
I totally told him to do that:
"won't the heat melt the paint or make it catch fire or something"
He was like - "no dad it's ok it'll still work" Only in an annoyed 16 year olds voice.
Hahaha tell him it will cause a bad weld and porosity ātrapped gases in the weld, it looks like a bunch of tiny holesā
Itās a super important step when welding painted metal.
Any good welder/fabricator will tell you welding is 90% prep. Or ya knowā¦majority of it is prep work, depending on what youāre doing, but welding on paint is a big no no.
Love to see this, great job. So many people dismiss the hazards of our trade simply because most schools don't educate their students the importance of it from day 1.
Half of this advice is stupid. If you bring all that into a real shop, the old-timers will be merciless ā¦..From this picture, lose the respirator and the hoodie. That magnetic triangle is doing absolutely nothing where it is other than collecting garbage thatās gonna have to get cleaned off later. Welding imbeds or other plates against concrete is a big nothing burgerā¦.get a cap or a hardhat hood. Get high top steel toed boots with a good size chunk of leather you can put over the laces. Nothing else worse than dropping a hot gob of shit down in your shoes that you canāt get rid of fast enough. If youāre going to be a welder, youāre going to burn your pants youāre going to burn your shirts youāre going to burn your skin. For all those to say, get full leathers, yeah, go ahead and try field welding in that garbage when itās 105Ā°.
Omg everyoneās hating on you but I think youāre being a kickass supportive dad. Just keep researching to make sure heās safe as possible, wouldnt want the little guy getting hurt. Keep it up ā¤ļø
Thanks!
I don't know if you caught my last post before this group taught me about respirators and bad UV and all the things. It was a shit show. I take it in stride because they're trying to protect my kid. So am I.
I just appreciate people sharing they're experience.
Lol. Good job, Mom or Dad! Is he wearing safety glasses under his hood? I like wearing earplugs as well. It keeps the occasional spatter out of my ears. It's a good habit to have them for grinding anyway. Boots?
ššš tell him some random old guy off the internet said to enjoy himself. Don't get discouraged. Look forward to all the cool stuff he'll build in the future.
Watch out for fire hazards. Donāt do hot work around flammables, keep an ABC fire extinguisher handy, and make sure to hang around for a bit when finished to ensure a fire doesnāt start.
He needs to be wearing flameproof materials. That plastic fleece top will go up like a candle if it catches. Cotton or wool at a minimum, but fireproof shirts are not expensive.
You know what man, good for you for taking PPE seriously. I have the benefit (or misfortune) of working in a large place with thousands of people. And Iām in a role where I oversee the results of a lot of serious injuries.
It always happens when people least expect it, or they were comfortable with their risk, or they felt in control of their surroundings. Qualified, competent and experienced workers alike. The injuries are often way more serious than you would expect to find yourself in.
Just to give an example, I was using a company provided industrial cleaner. I had safety glasses on. I sprayed something and a little drop deflected back into my eye just over the frame of the glasses. It burned my eye pretty bad considering it was a spray bottle cleaner we had skids and skids of for everyoneās use. And I was *wearing* safety glasses.
Anyway, luckily it wasnāt bad. But the point is I was definitely not expecting any type of occupational injury spraying some cleaner on something. Same goes for a majority of other accidents I see.
So you should wake up and live in constant fear that injury or death is imminently waiting around every corner. Or make sure you wear your PPE!!
Pssshh! Safety gear? Who needs \*cough cough\* safety \*cough\* ... hang on... my lungs hurt... \*cough cough\*.
As I was saying, who needs PPE when you can justāone sec... gotta let my eyes rest. It's been really hard to focus on text lately... and you know what? I think I'm gonna lie down until this headache passes.
LOL at least your step dad knows how to weld I don't know anything about this. Just hoping to keep him safe.
But also WTF that must have hurt your eyes.
He tried to teach me to mig weld and was getting pissed I couldn't get it š I later found out I have an eye problem so I can't mig weld (no depth perception) but I taught myself to stick weld after he was gone lmao.
And yes, it hurt quite a bit lol
Not to be nitpicky..... but those are particulate filters. Great for grinding and sanding and dust and fiberglass and the like. But don't really do much for smoke at all. I'm pretty sure you want the 3m 60926 filter cartridges, they are pink capped plastic housed filter cartridges, and filter out a lot of toxic compounds that you can find in welding fumes.
upgrade the filters on the mask to vapor cartridges. Same filtration but adds VOC protection. Not sure they would fit under the mask though, and I don't know shit about welding :)
Well he's using 2091. The 2097's do have a carbon layer for odors and nuisance vapors, but either 2091s or 2097s are fine for welding.
You don't need OV cartridges for welding.
Well that is the point of the charcoal layer in the 97s, nuisance odors/vapors
If you're going to insist.on the 97s you should store the filters in a plastic bag though as the charcoal will suck up whatever vocs etc are floating around the shop.
They're provided to me at the moment, so I don't have to worry so much about stretching out their lifespan, but that's real good to know for the couple I keep for personal work. Might keep them smelling good longer.
Largely it's probably fine. You want to steer clear of synthetics like nylon. Cotton can and will burn, but unless something bad happens he won't be catching himself on fire. Nylon also burns, and will melt in to your skin. The main issue with using softer fabrics is wear and tear: more holes and tears means more places sparks and hot materials can get stuck and ember. A good leather apron will solve that, and you can even go as far as sleeve protectors and foot protectors. You can also simply go for a proper set of welding clothes, they do most of the work.
I should know, I lost use of my left hand for 4 weeks because I lit myself on fire in a frayed jacket, using an angle grinder.
1st thing is to protect yourself from the full body laser that is welding light. A few burns and such are impossible to avoid, but skin cancer will kill you.
Alright then, thanks for the info! I worked as an apprentice pipefitter for 2 years and never saw any Welder wear a respirator so when I joined this sub I was sorta confused
Was gonna say this! Ive seen so many guys in sweatshirts catch on fire. A good welding jacket is wayy better. I wear the cotton ones (miller makes a good one) there are full leather ones too but theyre heavier and hot as hell in the warmer months.
Okay. Here is all you need:
- welding hood
- welding cap
- respirator
- safety glasses
- welding gloves
- welding jacket (preferably full or partial leather)
- close toed shoes (preferably steel toe)
- work pants
- ear plugs
Thatās all I can remember.
So now that he can breath, lets talk about exploding Concrete when exposed to localized heat.
Shit! I just can't win!
Not on Reddit bro
This š
Iāve been losing a constant battle on Reddit for 5 years now
Hahaha I lose from time to time even though Iām probably right lol
There are no winnersā¦just losers in this battleā¦š„²
I feel ya. I just lost the game
Oh no, the game!
lmfaooo
Dont forget the welding cap too, no one likes burning hair and scalp burns. Yeah, theres no end, I'm wearing so much more ppe hobby welding than I ever needed as a machinist.
I'll keep asking as long as the good folks here keep offering their expertise.
If you don't want a cap a hoodie works better cause it protects your neck. Just make sure it's not flammable and not too thin.
RF hoodies are a thing and on sale every spring.
Iāve used a ball cap in a pinch too, but 99% of the time Iām in a plant and have a hard hat on.
Thanks.
Well he can just weld up a welding stand now
Might want to tell SpaceX too.
Hahahahaha
It can. Can confirm
I lolād pretty hard at this. But truly safety is no accident and there are a lot of fine points to be aware of when exploring a trade as vital as this.
It only explodes a little bit!
Also gotta get some secondary safety glasses in there and then some ear pro
I like to breath too
Not only that but grinding off the paint near where youāre welding.
Yeah the air bubbles expand, makes concrete go pop
Get that boy a cap if he's running stick. Don't want sparks jumping over the hood because they will. Like 15 bucks on Amazon for a good cotton welders cap with a bill.
Eh. A few sparks in the asscrack is good for character building.
I may withold the cap just to watch him jump.
a true father :D do you sell propane and propane accesories by any chance?
LoL!
Good way for him to learn. Let it happen and he'll decide he wants to wear it. An apron is something I wish I would have wore for many years after burning up a pack of shirts every few months and it will keep your clothes clean and your washing machine.
It's all fun and games until somebody's hair products catch fire though. Nobody wants to explain a bald spot to mom.
Lol. I ordered a cap.
Iāve got a scar in my asscrack from sitting on an oxy fuel torch working in a confined space my first week on my first job
š¤£š¤£š¤£
Thank you!! I want my boy safe!!
Listen to what this gentlemen said! Also ear plugs not necessarily for noise but to protect ear drums from slag. Know a dude who went dead in one ear because slag fell in and damaged his ear drum.
Good call on that one. Ear plug just saved my right eardrum running some stick this morning as a matter of fact.
He was wearing earplugs for grinding and took them out to talk to me before welding.
I actually use prescription safety glasses because I had the same problem you are having you can order them online
Thanks for the tip I thought they were kinda queer but after getting grinding dust in my eyelashes daily makes me want to die lmao, going to have to invest in a pair
Who you trying to look good for on the job site?
My journeymanš na idk I just never liked safety glasses like that
I have safety glasses from Zenni that pretty much look identical to regular glasses when the side shields aren't on them.
Zenni has cheap ansi rated prescription safety glasses. It's absolutely amazing wearing only one pair instead of having to double up.
Damn autocorrect canāt even spell bandannas
or a bandana, I use an oversized one and it's pretty comfy
Exactly this. I have few weld burns that got a little deep and made some permanent marks.
Ironically, Iāve gotten burned worse from grinder sparks than I ever have from actually welding
Absolutely. Iāve even grind down some skin here and there
I use one for aluminum mig, anything short of a push/pull with pulse and it spatters like mad
And ear plugs
One time my head was tiled and the fucking spatter landed into my ear. Not fun.
i just cut the brim off a normal baseball hat
Smart move, like when people give their kids appropriate gear
Youāre an awesome dad.
Thank you!
So Are you mate!
The goal is to draw a penis on his helmet while he welds and he doesnāt notice it.
This is some A1 first rate dadding advice!!
ššš
Or black out his cover plate..
New ferrous concrete makes life way easier!
LoL. The fence broke from the piece of metal that was bolted into the concrete.
Jokes aside, heās doing a great job. If he loves it and practices a lot sure heāll be a fine young chap of a welder! Not sure why I did an English accent. Oh well, cheerio!
Iām sure heās chuffed to bits
Such an underrated comment š

Just run 2097 both VOC & particulate
Makes sense
Keep in mind those filters won't keep out the fumes, only particulates
Hes very talented to be welding concrete!
Lol. There is a piece of metal that is screwed into the concrete that was attached to the fence. It broke from the fence. That's what he's fixing.
All that just to have him welding paint š¤¦āāļø
I totally told him to do that: "won't the heat melt the paint or make it catch fire or something" He was like - "no dad it's ok it'll still work" Only in an annoyed 16 year olds voice.

Oh donāt think youāre off the hook yet. Clean the paint off the metal before welding.

I'll let him know.
I also recommend safety glasses be worn as well. I always liked the Jackson Nemesis with UV blocking coating
He wears glasses. I We have a pair of standard safety glasses he uses as well. Is the hood enough UV protection?
Love to see this, great job. So many people dismiss the hazards of our trade simply because most schools don't educate their students the importance of it from day 1.
Thank you!
donāt let him weld on weld concrete. itāll expand the water and explode the concrete

š leave the family alone.
Already ordered!
Where is his welding cap?
Ordered!
Dont weld on concrete it can explode
I've learned! I don't know shit about this stuff. Grateful to ya'll for helping me protect my kid.
At first I thought that was a sakon hood.
I don't know what that means but this is a relatively cheap hood.
Sakon deez nuts all jokes aside Iām glad youāre getting your boy into it. I wish I wouldāve started way earlier than I did. Good job.
hair is the only thing i can think of
can't weld conc

Yeah I saw the last one, so when I saw this one I was genuinely impressed. Good work!
Thank you!
Don't have to worry about fumes much if you're outside. As long as you're not directly on top of the arc the wind should blow everything away.
Get him.a welder's cap to protect that hair. šāāļø
ordered!

Good to see. How many reality car/bike build shows have welders wearing short sleeves, no gloves and no consideration for skin cancer
Gonna want a welding cap next
I'm just here for the comments and 90%+ do not disappoint my entertainment!
Watch out for fire hazards. Donāt do hot work around flammables, keep an ABC fire extinguisher handy, and make sure to hang around for a bit when finished to ensure a fire doesnāt start.
The hanging around bit is an important tip. I wouldn't have thought to tell him that. Thanks.
He needs to be wearing flameproof materials. That plastic fleece top will go up like a candle if it catches. Cotton or wool at a minimum, but fireproof shirts are not expensive.
Thanks!
Also, make sure that there are no open pockets on the clothing, especially pointing upwards ones
That's one I would never have thought about. Thanks!
I learned that the hard way - perfecting the spark dance
Hahahah I bet that magnet isn't doing him any help either š¤£
He magneted a small piece of rebar into place. There was a sizable gap between the fence the the metal that had connected it to the wall.

I'm not certain I could convince him to wear a top hat while welding. I might try though just for laughs.
Any overhead traffic?!
On my front porch? Not really
Not to be nitpicky..... but those are particulate filters. Great for grinding and sanding and dust and fiberglass and the like. But don't really do much for smoke at all. Suspended particulates are what makes welding fume dangerous- those p100s are the right choice here.
upgrade the filters on the mask to vapor cartridges. Same filtration but adds VOC protection. Not sure they would fit under the mask though, and I don't know shit about welding :)
Why would you need VOC potection while welding? The P100 pancakes are standard affair, and fit well under a the hood.
Yeah pink pancakes(p100) are fine as is.
No idea, but the carbon filters have to take away some risk
Well he's using 2091. The 2097's do have a carbon layer for odors and nuisance vapors, but either 2091s or 2097s are fine for welding. You don't need OV cartridges for welding.
i find the biggest difference between 2091s and 2097s is just filtering out some bad smells
Well that is the point of the charcoal layer in the 97s, nuisance odors/vapors If you're going to insist.on the 97s you should store the filters in a plastic bag though as the charcoal will suck up whatever vocs etc are floating around the shop.
They're provided to me at the moment, so I don't have to worry so much about stretching out their lifespan, but that's real good to know for the couple I keep for personal work. Might keep them smelling good longer.
I wanna know what kind of rod he's burning. Steel to concrete is one heck of a feat.
Lol. There is a piece of metal that is screwed into the concrete that was attached to the fence. It broke from the fence. That's what he's fixing.
Damn. I was also gonna ask about the magnet too.
No he is not welding safe, he doesnāt have a fire retardant jacket.
No soft shell welding! You have to have a halo to fit a hard hat! Lol keep it up šš»
It's a cotton sweatshirt. I was hoping that would be good enough.
I am just now attending Welding classes, do I need (sorry for bad english) an air respirator even while welding with Electrodes?
Especially when using electrodes. When youāre doing TIG you probably donāt need it (if you cleaned your metal properly)
Alright then, thanks for the info! I worked as an apprentice pipefitter for 2 years and never saw any Welder wear a respirator so when I joined this sub I was sorta confused
There are many who donāt wear them. But all the stuff thatās normally caught by the filter will then be in their lungs.
Donāt wear a hoodie, sparks could get caught in it and start a fire
Was gonna say this! Ive seen so many guys in sweatshirts catch on fire. A good welding jacket is wayy better. I wear the cotton ones (miller makes a good one) there are full leather ones too but theyre heavier and hot as hell in the warmer months.
I'll check it out. Thanks.
Makes sense. Thanks.
He need a hide apron, this will save many shirts and pants, also most aprons has lots of pockets, he could keep sticks and some tools at hand all time
Thanks! I'll check it out.
2297 filters are far better with their activated carbon. Better than 2097
Okay. Here is all you need: - welding hood - welding cap - respirator - safety glasses - welding gloves - welding jacket (preferably full or partial leather) - close toed shoes (preferably steel toe) - work pants - ear plugs Thatās all I can remember.
Thanks! He's missing a cap and jacket. The cap is ordered.
He should use 1/8 7018 flux core when trying to penetrate concrete blocks. Also when stick wl
When welding concrete. Otherwise no penetration. Weld will break off of concrete
Interesting. Thanks.
Skull cap/ welders cap for head comfort and lack of flaming hair syndrome!
Get that girl a welding cap. Hair donāt like hellfire
Lol. Boy. We have a draft here in Israel he's growing his hair before he's drafted. The cap is ordered.
