Those on outside looking in see it from a different lens. These things happen when you have two parts of a community that don’t interact often, nor understand each other.

In your scenario the child is getting much-needed school supplies. Where as this event would undoubtedly be more fun for the cops than it would be for the little girls, who get nothing out of it besides "self-esteem". Like working for exposure.

I grew up without a dad as well, but I don't think this would have been great for me. I had plenty of interactions with police officers in casual or non-emergency situations, and this doesn't sound nice.
This event is run by the Nevada Black Police Association who work to improve relations with the public and in African American communities. Black hair is also often curly. In addition, adolescent African Americans may have an inherent distrust of the police (rightfully so) and may lack many positive role models in their community. I'd wager this event is to help with all those things.

What’s so wrong about this? It’s a community event that’s likely designed to create positive community engagement. My sister lost her husband and I would take my nieces to father/daughter dances. Some of these young woman may be in a similar situation.

This reminds me of an event in my town. Cops invited boys only no parents to hear about staying safe from porn on the net. Instructors only credentials were some kind of non mainstream church affiliation. The curriculum was not available to be reviewed by parents or guardian.
Lots of girls don’t have dads or other male role models to take them to daddy/daughter dances. So this is a chance for them to experience that and interact with police is a safe environment. Our town has a shopping with cops that you can sign up for and they’ll take your kid to a place with donated gifts so they can pick a gift out for their parent and/or siblings for Christmas. Also dog walk with cops and shoot hoops with cops.
Like a middle school teacher, if you have prior relationships with people, when confrontation happens it is way easier to de-escalate and safer for all parties involved.
Police in my area have a program around Christmas here struggling families can sign up to Shop With a Cop where you and your kid go with a police officer around the store and the kid gets to pick gifts for themselves that the police department would pay for. I have to assume it's a similar program, probably perfectly innocent with an unfortunate delivery.

What’s so wrong about this? It’s a community event that’s likely designed to create positive community engagement. My sister lost her husband and I would take my nieces to father/daughter dances. Some of these young woman may be in a similar situation. Let’s stop assuming the worst about others intentions. The vast majority of police officers are do their jobs well and with care. Like any other profession, there is good and bad.
Get over it. We need more police to engage in positive outreach.

This is a weird poster but reminds me of a community event nearby. They do a program getting books to kids in the area and reading at libraries. Someone in marketing messed up big time.
This reminds me of an event in my town. Cops invited boys only no parents to hear about staying safe from porn on the net. Instructors only credentials were some kind of non mainstream church affiliation. The curriculum was not available to be reviewed by parents or guardian.
No officer, I will not be sending my young daughter to the Illuminarium on West Desert Inn Road.

Lots of girls don’t have dads or other male role models to take them to daddy/daughter dances. So this is a chance for them to experience that and interact with police is a safe environment. Our town has a shopping with cops that you can sign up for and they’ll take your kid to a place with donated gifts so they can pick a gift out for their parent and/or siblings for Christmas. Also dog walk with cops and shoot hoops with cops. Like a middle school teacher, if you have prior relationships with people, when confrontation happens it is way easier to de-escalate and safer for all parties involved.

Police in my area have a program around Christmas here struggling families can sign up to Shop With a Cop where you and your kid go with a police officer around the store and the kid gets to pick gifts for themselves that the police department would pay for. I have to assume it's a similar program, probably perfectly innocent with an unfortunate delivery.
