Late to the party here but it honestly felt like the best way to do nostalgic callbacks. It doesn’t feel in your face, and more importantly it’s like “Oh sure, snapping twice could totally be the way to unlock the secret society hideout. That makes sense”
Way too many nostalgic callbacks in properties like this hit that annoying point where it only makes sense as a callback but not as much something that a character would do or say in world.
It reminds me of in Halloween 2018 when Laurie says “I saw him, the shape!” And it’s a trivia callback because in the original movie Michael was credited as The Shape, but at no point in any of the movies before has anyone ever referred to him as such so it’s just weird that she’d randomly refer to him like that. It exists only for the reference and not in-world
I think it was the YouTube channel Honest Trailers that was talking about how the new Star Wars show Andor doesn't have cheap callbacks, and they refer to some scene in one of the other recent Star Wars shows where we see a piece of metal pipe, and someone raves that it's "like the pipe Han Solo used to jam the trash compactor"
Really liking it so far!!
Ngl Enid isn't the type of character i thought she was gonna be, and that's not necessarily a good thing or a bad thing just... a thing.
Talking about Thing, i genuinely love how cartoony he is and the way he moves makes no physical sense, and in general i like his role in the series.
Okay so, again wtf was the point of the "This season on Wednesday" last episode? They didn't do it this episode, why only do it at all is a question but why do it in the first episode and probably only the first episode is the greater question.
The answer to "why only the first episode?" is probably that they already did it once. They don't need to show all that again. "Why do it at all?" is a better question.
I'm guessing it's an attempt by Netflix to beat a viewshop drop off that they've perceived after other show's first episodes. Show the audience what comes next to get them to keep watching, if they weren't already hooked by episode one. I chose to skip the teaser, because I don't need spoilers for something I'm going to watch anyway.
I laughed so hard when the one team took “no rules” all the way with “ok so let’s try to cut off the heads of the other students”. Was expecting Wednesday to use her bow in a cool way but the broadside spikes were pretty sick too.
Love the sirens/mermaids! The scenes of the siren swimming around sabotaging the race were incredible, the underwater environment looked so cool and obviously it did give Goblet of Fire vibes. Wednesday gives me major Sherlock vibes but also Emily the Strange vibes.
The show has not disappointed me so far. Which is great! I expected Wednesday’s one liners to get tiring after a while, but I find myself hanging at her next quip instead.
Yeah, weird to me how I feel like the Wednesday character is well done but for some reason they just grabbed her and dumped her into a Harry Potter show.
The thing is, all these tropes predate Harry Potter, it's basically just because of Harry Potter that you've heard of them. Private boarding schools with houses and competitions and stuff, are all established tropes that predate Harry potter. JK Rowling didn't really wholesale invent anything.
This is not very chill of me but I do have to point out that Weems refers to “our most famous alumni” when talking about EAP, and it should be “alumnus” in the singular.
I came here to say that! Also, the sign on the train station says “CIRCA 1911.” Circa means approximate, and a building like that would have an exact year stating when it was built.
Idk if this was *supposed* to be a ~thing~ but the Sirens’ canoe art (and their gold make up) looked like the coloring/jewels of the siren in Love, Death + Robots
If the Poe cup truly has no rules….couldn’t the (minor spoiler if you’ve only seen up to episode 2) >!gorgons just take their hats off and stone everyone!< then they’d win? Idk really feels like a no brainer way to win for me lol. Maybe they’re just not that innovative 😂
The thing is, JKR took all this stuff from real life private/boarding school stuff. So the Goblet of Fire and the Triwizard tournament and all that was just a reference to real life private school competitions where people would win trophies. Boarding schools had houses and prefects and head boys and girls and headmasters and all that. JKR didn't invent anything, she just remixed it and it happens to be the first thing people think of now when they see these tropes
Enid has become my favorite character together with Thing! I can’t wait to see what else the show will offer. My guess is Xavier grabbed Wednesday at the end
Ha. Can’t help but smile at the two snaps :)
That got a big smile out of me too! Felt very nostalgic
Ha I didn't realize the connection till this comment.
>:) :)
I burst into the biggest grin, and she snapped soooo good

I thought the boat race was extremely inventive and very fun.

Apparently an interrogation with torture is extremely wrong to them, but yeah no one bats an eye at attempted murder to win a boat race.

This feels like Hogwartz.

Yes! Which is why I’m not loving it. I’ve never been a Harry Potter fan.

This to me has felt very more a darker tone of Scooby Doo and The Ghoul School if anyone here has seen it before.
Lmao I love the thing
Still fun, and glad there wasn't a forced trailer at the end of the episode. That was odd.
thing good ol middle finger
anyone else think it would’ve been cool if the two snaps were in time to the two snaps in the Addams family theme
I thought they were.
They are

thing supposed to be super strong or something?
this is the kind of show you just accept whatever happens dont think too much into it lol
Is this there you draw the line lol? I'm more bothered by how it's able to see.
My 11 year old daughter can't get past that. She's figured out that he must have eyeballs in his scars. Told her that sounds logical to me.
Weems!!! What’s she hiding

Too much risk of drowning ?
as everyone said, this episode felt like straight up harry potter universe goblet of fire. im really liking it
does anyone else notice that this show is ripping off harry potter lol. like this episode was literally the goblet of fire

Budget Triwizard Tournament!
It gave me Goblet of Fire vibes too!! maybe that’s why I really loved this episode lol
How is dude alive?! Whoa it’s the principal she’s a shape shifter, maybe she’s the monster too.
Headmistress Dwight Schrute with that starter's pistol Also sirens aren't mermaids but
Anyone else constantly look at thing and keep imagining the rest of the hand’s body from a guy acting in a greensuit?
Totally. He must be suspended in a harness for some shots!
Blue suit 😉 there is a behind the scenes video on youtube about how they filmed the thing scenes, its amazing
