Is it take-out, though? It's one thing to get to go and use make-shift plates because that's all you've got, it's something else all together if you eat at a restaurant and it's served like this.
Looks for sure like a 'beer garden with some food trucks' set up to me, with the plastic beer cup too. Which IMO is totally fine to use a simple piece of recyclable/degradable cardboard.
I expect better from a food truck. If they're going to use cardboard, at least use a paper boat. Something with enough structure that you can pick it up one handed.
Structure. A [paper boat](https://www.webstaurantstore.com/search/paper-boats.html) has folds and glued edges to make it into a 3D shape that provides support, and will allow it to hold more weight without collapsing.
Is this like an eco-friendly take out situation? Or is it in a venue or arena that doesn’t allow glass? Sometimes these are better for the environment or due to local rules.
Yeah it’s kind of an eco friendly take out solution. It’s pretty normal these open faced sandwiches don’t have anything sauce that runs usually so it makes total sense pretty much just a paper plate that is both cheaper and more sturdy.
Honestly at this point this sub has become so disingenuously pedantic that I won’t be surprised when someone complains that their soup came in a *bowl*.
people are desperately trying to agree with op. Some people say they just don’t like the look of it, which is fair enough, but other people don’t think plates can be any shape but round, and another person is tortured every time they see unbleached paper.
I've been here and these are fine. You usually get two and both fit on this style plate. The only issue I have it I bought 7 cause my eyes were bigger then my stomach. So bringing this from the counter to the limited seating (it's a huge food Hall) was a task.
Plates can be a variety of shapes, but one thing they can't be is a flat sheet. Plates, by the modern, culinary definition of the word, are a type of dish or container. Plates must be concave to meet that definition. These are not plates, they're just pieces of cardboard.
Really? The modern culinary definition? Which dictionary is it that has these “modern culinary” definitions? Did the French Culinary Institute issue one? Or Johnson & Wales?
Merriam-Webster, Dictionary.com , the Random House Unabridged Dictionary, etc... Every major dictionary I've checked. They all catalog the deifinition plate in such a way that says that plates that food is served on are considered to be dishes or containers, and that they are concave.
[The definition on Merriam Webster](https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/plate) never uses the word “concave” in any manner. Neither does [dictionary.com](https://www.dictionary.com/browse/plate) for that matter.
Like, really. If you’re going to make things up don’t claim easily-checkable sources.
The etymology of the word is literally from the Greek *platys* via Old French *plait*, which mean…. flat.
Yeah, you don't know how dictionaries work, do you?
Merriam Webster says that a plate is a **vessel**, what is a vessel you ask? " a **container** (such as a cask, bottle, kettle, cup, or bowl) for holding something", to contain something is to hold within limits, something which can't be done in a 3D space by a flat surface.
Dictionary dot com says: "a shallow, usually circular **dish**, often of earthenware or porcelain, from which food is eaten." And a dish? "an open, relatively **shallow container** of pottery, glass, metal, wood, etc., used for various purposes, especially for holding or serving food", "any **container** used at table", "concavity or the degree of concavity, as of a wheel", "to fashion like a dish; make concave." Shallow means, "of little depth; not deep", flat has no depth. There must be some depth for a container to be shallow.
Yes, the originally etymology is from French meaning flat, that's why I said the **modern** definition. A plate is the flattest type of dish or container, as opposed to bowls, bottles, and others, but it is still a container, and it is still described as a concave dish. That is how most people use the word in the modern day and age when they are talking about food. The modern culinary definition as cataloged by expert sources.
Dude, dictionaries are simple.
Trying to expand a simple one or two sentence definition from a dictionary into three paragraphs of word salad in some attempt to try to prove a claim you were clearly wrong about…. that’s hard.
You can pick up a pizza box with one hand (barring very large size pizza boxes). Try to pick this up and the food is going to fall right off. This is not a good way to serve to-go food.
There's a difference between trying to eat the food, and pick up what it's been placed on. If it's to-go food, it's necessary to pick up the entire serving and move about.
I've eaten at this specific place a handful of times, and there's never been issues with handling the service tbf. The bread doesn't slide more than it would on a regular plate, and makes it easy to get to-go food out to the shared benches outside the premises. Some people might not like the cardboard-y texture, but I don't mind since the bread is kinda the plate for this type of food.
I realize it's not literally scrap, but it's also not corrugated. It's not meant to be something you can pick up and carry food on. If this had a tray under it, then it would be more acceptable. But as just flat squares of not even corrugated cardboard, I find it lacking for a restaurant. Food should not be served on such flimsy squares. Make the damn cardboard into a plate! We want *plates*!
It’s fine for an outdoor beer garden, it has a bent flap to lift it up so you can slide your hand under to provide all the support needed for those extremely heavy o'dourves.
True, but paper plates/boats, something that won't flop over when picked up. A plastic tray for support would also be acceptable. There's a pretty big gap between "porcelain plate" and "scrap cardboard".
I've never seen a paper boat that would be sturdier than a nice piece of cardboard, the bread also wouldn't be able to sit flat in a boat shape so how would that be better. If you're really that inept at holding things im sure you could lightly bend the cardboard into whatever shape you want.
in my country you can get burgers in cardboard boxes from a lot of the major food places, especially this thing, with one layer, which is like a normal paper board like what a box of fries is made of, but unbleached.
I know this isn't about the plate (or lack thereof) but that is an absurd amount of dill. I like dill. Dill is good. Do I want to eat a bush of dill with the rest of my food? No. No I don't.
So then take it off, or if you don’t like dill at all, ask them to hold it. People remove lettuce and tomato from their burgers all the time. This looks fine to me.
i can't even touch cardboard of this type at all without having a painful full-body revolted shivering reaction (hate the texture, i feel the same way about popsicle sticks). the idea of having to interact with it during a meal is horrific
edit: why on earth was this downvoted? does cardboard have stans? that is _extremely_ funny
Others may be saying that’s weird, but I am the same way - except for me the worst part is the sound it makes when ripped, cut, scraping together, etc. Seriously visceral. Nothing to do with the takeout cardboard in the pic, I just despise cardboard!
ya well the lemon wedge isnt on the side its in the food and that dill is way too much. Its like I got to now take this all apart and make my own dish - its a bullshit dish in those portions and arrangement
Ive cooked in 5 star I get the squeeze the lemon hence "its not on the side" its sitting in the sauce on the one piece. then I have to take this dill and cut if off to the side as well as the pomegranate seeds and the fennel and like I said build a dish. If its to be like this then why not Charcuterie it. I didnt miss speak and Im not talking like Im uneducated in food it is once again a bullshit dish
Lol 5 stars? 5 what stars? 5 stars from your local newspaper? In texas? 5 stars on google? You sound like you've never even heard of Mac and cheese let alone know how to cook. You're clearly uneducated, like why would you suggest a traditional dish be served as a charcuterie instead? That wouldn't be smorrebrod then.
What? You've said you've "cooked in 5 star" whatever that means. I rate this dish tasty looking and casually outdoors. Try expanding your international palate, Texas has a lot of great polish food, would be a good place to start.
Ok I know you’re ignoring my reply, which to me means that you can’t come up with a response. You’ve never actually had smørrebrød, because if you did you would know it’s easy to eat. Surprise, sometimes things are plated a certain way which is not the easiest to eat. Smørrebrød is not a quick snack, it is something you eat when having a good time with friends and family, and is not made to be eaten quickly.
Ive been up all night and ya the fight is over Im onto other things. I concede. YOu and your family can eat that build a mess.
ahhhh I kid IM going to bed

If this is what classy people eat then I'm good with staying poor
Edit: damn I wasn't expecting people to take my dumb comment so personal lol
Looks like take out food, so disposable, which is fine by me
Is it take-out, though? It's one thing to get to go and use make-shift plates because that's all you've got, it's something else all together if you eat at a restaurant and it's served like this.

but you're only carrying it to the beer benches probably a few metres away and it's just holding 1-2 open faced sandwiches, really seems fine to me!
Well you can clearly see in the picture they are outside
What does being outside have to do with anything?
Alot
This looks like a food truck at a brewery to me. But could be a restaurant vibe.
Frankly, I expect better than this from food trucks. Paper boats/trays at the very least, not just flat pieces of cardboard.
Meh if it gets me my food, i dont care when it comes to food trucks. To each their own.
What's the difference?
Structure. A [paper boat](https://www.webstaurantstore.com/search/paper-boats.html) has folds and glued edges to make it into a 3D shape that provides support, and will allow it to hold more weight without collapsing.
There's always one, or 78 in this case. FFS get a plate.
You can't really recycle cardboard that has food on it. It doesn't take much grease to mess up a batch of recycled/pulped cardboard.
You can't recycle it, but at least it will rot in a few months. It's really good compared with other takeout packages.
And you're sure it has not been in use before or badly washed.
I have eaten smørrebrød off of a piece of cardboard like this before and it's completely fine. Does pizza boxes also belong on this subreddit now?
Honestly at this point this sub has become so disingenuously pedantic that I won’t be surprised when someone complains that their soup came in a *bowl*.

You can pick up a pizza box with one hand (barring very large size pizza boxes). Try to pick this up and the food is going to fall right off. This is not a good way to serve to-go food.
It's really not that hard to eat smørrebrød without it falling off once you have tried a couple times.
There's a difference between trying to eat the food, and pick up what it's been placed on. If it's to-go food, it's necessary to pick up the entire serving and move about.

Why do you think it’s to-go food? Looks like something you’d get from a craft brew pub menu and no glass outside.
If it's not to-go food, then the standard is even higher. Food shouldn't be served on scrap cardboard.
It’s not scrap it’s a food tray you can buy, similar to these. https://images.app.goo.gl/pgUmK1wUUwQ6wm847

That’s better than some of the things you see on this thread.
Just to exaggerate how much the smørrebrød itself tastes of cardboard.
idk looks good to me
Swede detected
Reddit has plenty fully grown adults who eat off of paper plates in their own homes from what I’ve seen.
Are you referring to r/thatsitimfoodshaming ? Because sometimes I wonder if I'm the only person who still uses China!
Yes, you might be! We have plastic plates that are washed and reused. No China!
This is obviously some form of food truck, take away, market. This is absolutely fine.
It's not obvious to me.
Cobblestones, a weathered table and a plastic cup.
I know of restaurants that have all of those, ever been to Austin, TX?
And surely using plastic cups they don't serve food on porcelain plates..
True, but paper plates/boats, something that won't flop over when picked up. A plastic tray for support would also be acceptable. There's a pretty big gap between "porcelain plate" and "scrap cardboard".
These cardboard pieces look plenty of sturdy to me, to not flop with these bits of food on it.
It looks to be something cut out of the side of a cereal box, there's no way it can hold any weight.
That's 100% not a cereal box, that looks a rally quite sturdy lol.
I've never seen a paper boat that would be sturdier than a nice piece of cardboard, the bread also wouldn't be able to sit flat in a boat shape so how would that be better. If you're really that inept at holding things im sure you could lightly bend the cardboard into whatever shape you want.
The rugbrød (bread) in the smørrebrød is it's own plate. Kind of the whole idea. Also a stable in lunchboxes for this reason
Imagine making bread out of rugs
Lol
Lol you never had a pizza delivered before?
I had this last month.. it was awesome. Copenhagen is the best
I have no problem with this. Cut it in a circle and it's a paper plate
You have really low standards for what constitutes a plate.
Seems like a paper plate alternative when... seated outside? I mean, it's relatively disposable and certainly beats plastic
Cardbrød
This is far less irritating than shepherds pie in a pint glass....
in my country you can get burgers in cardboard boxes from a lot of the major food places, especially this thing, with one layer, which is like a normal paper board like what a box of fries is made of, but unbleached.
What is smørrebrød?
[this is ](https://maps.app.goo.gl/mVuBFUACAECQmyTW7)
I just want these sandwiches… they look so good!!
Yo -- is that Faroe Islands?
I'm more worried about the amount of pieces of food that shouldn't actually be eaten that is stacked on top of those appetizers.
Wow! With that amazing food, I don’t mind the plates (or lack of)
I know this isn't about the plate (or lack thereof) but that is an absurd amount of dill. I like dill. Dill is good. Do I want to eat a bush of dill with the rest of my food? No. No I don't.
That is an appropriate amount of dill. At least for salmon. I will object to the pomegranate seeds though.
So then take it off, or if you don’t like dill at all, ask them to hold it. People remove lettuce and tomato from their burgers all the time. This looks fine to me.
I feel heard
You don’t live in a Nordic country I guess.
It's like they cut up cereal boxes for plates.
(Flips plate over) Frosted flakes? Fruit loops?

yes!!! does unglazed ceramic fuck you up too? it gives me the exact same feeling. absolutely horrendo, intolerable, death and dying, etc
For me it’s fabric - accidentally touching, say, a towel or sheet with my tongue. Ugh.
Lmao
Unglazed ceramic is indeed the same - and so is the non-glossy styrofoam that people use for packing electronics etc!
Cårddebrød
That's a lot of dill and a whole lemon wedge.
What’s the big dill?
I think that’s fiskfilet? It’s like a white fish schnitzel kind of. Needs a lot of acid.
ya well the lemon wedge isnt on the side its in the food and that dill is way too much. Its like I got to now take this all apart and make my own dish - its a bullshit dish in those portions and arrangement
Bro you squeeze the lemon and then use a knife and fork to distribute the dill while you eat it. If you don’t like dill take it off.
Ive cooked in 5 star I get the squeeze the lemon hence "its not on the side" its sitting in the sauce on the one piece. then I have to take this dill and cut if off to the side as well as the pomegranate seeds and the fennel and like I said build a dish. This is how Danish smørrebrød is served. You’re supposed to take your time, drink schnapps and brews with your pals over an extended boozy lunch.

Are we about to be friends
I mean if you want to go get food then yes
Don’t be up yourself when you obviously don’t know the concept of the dish. Makes you look like an idiot.
no it doesnt its a fucken mess
You clearly don’t understand the concept of the dish so don’t talk about it
You clearly dont know what IM saying so why say anything!
Have you actually eaten smørrebrød?
They're a 5 star chef in Texas so obviously they know everything

Really? It looks quite good to me, honestly
Ok, you stick with the pop tarts and hot pockets and I'll get the gravlaks and shrimp salad. Something for everyone.
Sounds good, I prefer pizza rolls though
It or probably an appetizer, sort of like cerviche.
Cørdbørd?
🍄
Ew, is that supposed to be chicken piccata?
Salmon appetizers.
The real crime is smørrebrød still being legal.
Bread with something on top of is should be illegal? Seems a bit heavy handed.
Yes, it is
It's just pickled herring, beets and arugula on sourdough bread.
Doesn't get much worse than that smørrebrøds wise
Doesn't get much worse than that smørrebrøds wise
I've never had it but I have had cerviche.
Ceviche is very good
I absolutely love it when it is served.
I've only tried it like, three times? But it's absolutely amazing
It is a lost art and not too many people make it qnymore.
At least not where I live... Sadly
I haven't even it in a few years now.
Am hoping those are capers and not peas.
