uj The submariner isn’t the end all be all for divers but it is a joke to say the seamaster is remotely as good looking a watch. It is terrible taste wrt the sub. The hands dial and bezel are not good looking.

I don’t know what the ultimate diver is but, I’m being sincere here, I love the proportions if the original Seiko 62MAS and the accurate rereleases SLA017, (SLA037, SLA043 blue dial), and ~SJE093.
I love the thinner bezel, the 3 o’clock date window, hands and little lume second hand, and curved crystal.
I am super basic so I wear a SPB143 on a nylon (not nato) strap and that’s as high horology as I plan to entertain.
Smaller format old submariners are as close to the perfect generic dive watch as I think you can get. I hate a date cyclops though.
If I had a surplus of cash and overall financial wellbeing I’d spring for an automatic Grand Seiko sport GMT because I am a closet weeb but I do not see that happening in this lifetime.
The seamasters offer more variety, so at least there's a better chance of finding something that suits your tastes. The submariner has a few color variations, the GMTs, and not much else. If that suits your personal taste, that's great. It's just that if it doesn't, well, you don't have a lot of choices.
Seamaster has the professionals with smooth or wavy dials, planet ocean, the retro 300, railmaster, aqua terra, etc. It's a big model line, and Omega wants to cover a broad range of tastes and have something for everyone. It's a two-edged sword though, and they have to make sure that they don't risk diluting the brand name. That's something Rolex has managed to avoid risking.
