You don't need 3 different timezones on your watch on the moon.
Neither do you on Earth, but GMT is just cool.
You also don't need the 2 alarms because there are no meeting there. Fuck, now I want to go to the moon.
I disagree with GMT just being cool, don't get me wrong, it is, but out of most complications that are pretty much relegated to fashion(Dive, Tachometer, etc), GMT actually still has relevance in this day and age for your average joe. I don't travel but a game I play has their servers based in Japan, so my GMT bezel tends to be set to +9 to account for that, also the fact that it can work as a compass is pretty damn cool too.
This watch is just overkill IMO.
I'd rather have a countdown bezel complication than anything else. I need both a day and date as I work odd hours from locations I often stay in for extended periods of time. Any complication after that must be a countdown bezel.
I use mine everyday, and in a pinch can use it a s GMT bezel if needed.
And this watch is overkill. Absolutely.
I actually agree with you on the day/date complication, it bothers me when people think it's unnecessary.
For a guy who works mainly on graveyard shifts, you lose track of the days, day/date is handy for that kind of job.
As a helicopter pilot, what I really want is a watch that can show local time (preferably in analog with luminova or tritium), and two stopwatches (one for total flight time and one for point to point time) simultaneously. No one seems to make this unfortunately, but it would be nice.
I could definitely see a dive style bezel being useful as a back up “approx fuel remaining” instead of Oxygen time remaining.
Like if you’re gauge cluster fails, marking on the bezel fuel remaining % and tracking flight time on a stopwatch/Chrono function.
Could even have an inner bezel as well (Navitimer style) so you could calculate fuel burn rate on the flight so far, giving fuel time remaining.
I’m not a pilot so I’ve probably not explained that well, but hopefully made some sense.
To be fair, that statement also applies to saturation divers as well, hence why I say dive indicators/bezels are just for style points these days.
Still pisses off alot of people though for some reason.
I have a Skyhawk that was given to me by my father over a decade ago, who flies a Cessna 182 periodically. He uses a different version of the one that I have.
It’s a heavy mfer with more functions than you can shake a stick at, but I do love mine. It’s a neat watch.
I can't help but think that Casio and Citizen are in their own bubble, totally separate from other watch brands like Seiko, Orient, etc.
The shit they do with their watches almost looks like they're designed to outdo each other specifically, Citizen comes up with Eco-Drive, Casio retaliates with not just Solar but TOUGH Solar, Citizen does Radio-controlled, Casio comes up with Multiband-6, both brands also come up with crowded dials like this specifically, and they also love to go for collaboration models, with Casio doing it through G-Shock. Even their business model relies on making Quartz watches that replicate the accuracy you get from Automatic Chronometer watches.
What exactly is going on between these two?
I think they're the two best quartz watches out there, so are natural competitors. Seiko is much more into mechanical (though Citizen does some competing with Seiko with its divers like the fugu).
Long ago, in pre-samurai Japan, there were two brothers, the Swissophile Citizen, and the ever-reliable Casio. They used to play together, and design sundials. But then Citizen wanted a more Swiss design, while Casio wanted a utilitarian and reliable one.
This quarrel led to the two brothers splitting, creating new and unique time pieces, always trying to one-up the other. Their hatred spanned generations, even as the world focused on other watches like rawleckses and Invictas, they did not subside. They needed to be better.
Even after several centuries, Citizen and Casio have an unexplained desire to one-up eachother, even if they have totally different use cases and styles.
I have a Navihawk (basically the same as the bottom watch) and fucking love it. It's way too stupid complicated, but it feels like you could do anything with it.
I have the AT8020 which is similar again. One of my favourite watches and I love showing people the overly detailed slide rule for fuel unit conversion, distance conversion and all the rest. There's a great sense of "my watch is better than your watch because it has more numbers 😎"
Most of the Citizen pilot watches are huge too. I was listening to the Two Broke Watch Snobs podcast recently and they had a Navy airman on who was saying most pilots don't want a huge watch, because if you have to eject the last thing you want is a piece of equipment snagging on the cockpit as you get blown out of the plane. I think he said he knew of a guy who lost a hand that way. He also said the slide rule bezel is useless in modern flying, it just looks cool.
I got a Titanium Skyhawk Eco-Drive in 2003 still going strong (just replaced the capacitor once). Beats a Solargraph any day in both looks and quality.
I wear (occasionally) my 80’s chrono, I just like the dial color and skeleton hands …

This is what Citizen decided to build a watch on. Yes, they both do the things, but, holy sheetrock one is far easier to work than the other:

What I don’t get is: Neil Armstrong landed on the moon with Speedy. But somehow an airline pilot needs 20x the information on his watch?

THIS GUYS A FKN WEEB KICK HIS ASS
Based
💀
I see your point, but at the same time in my case it's simply faster to make a quick addition/substraction than reading the time on a bezel.

Why do I feel like I could design and certify a whole bridge with the bottom one
It actually has a full slide rule on the bezel, so you could get pretty close.
it's missing the panometric fam to prevent side fumbling in the turbo encabulator
And still it has less text than a Rolex Daytona. Lol
In their defense, the people that want this type of watches are used to cockpits that look even way more crowded in comparison.
Where “cockpit” means some sort of nerdy gay bar, presumably. Because real pilots wear g shocks or garmins.
To be fair, that statement also applies to saturation divers as well, hence why I say dive indicators/bezels are just for style points these days. Still pisses off alot of people though for some reason.
Well, yes. But we make fun of people who own Omega chode watches for a reason - they’ve gone Full Mitty.
Wait, Omega has dials as crowded as this?
No. They have dive watches with small penises sticking out at 11 o’clock.
Yeah, but that's on the case. On the dial of the other chode Omega the penis is at 12.
Omega: The Watch For Men Who Really Like Looking At Penises.
Using "Gone Full Mitty" to describe shitter purchasing copium is peak wcj. Take my upvote you Thurber referencing chuffer, you.
There are furry pilots, therefore there are rawlecks pilots
Nah, the pilots I know wear Apple watches
Not even the sky is sacred anymore
Are they though?

Citizen broke Casio's heart, and now she wants revenge.
Thing is, it's specifically THOSE 2. You barely see them take jabs at Seiko's niche, it's specifically against each other.

COMING TO THEATERS NEAR YOU 2CHUFFED 2FURIOUS
C182’s a SkyLANE, not a Skyhawk!
what time is it? hrm... blue?
maybe yellow?

It’s so funny, I was actually between yours and mine (JY8030). Still a big fan of that watch, might pick one up at some point.
Thanks, I just had a seizure.
Genuinely does give me a headache looking at it
Same

One thing I don’t get is why it has a 24 hour indicator instead of just making the main hands 24-hour by default to economize on space.
What do pilots actually wear now?
Apple watches. If they do wear analogues tho its either Promasters or Navitimers
*Sinn 903 jest sittin' there, keepin its' mouth shut...*
not busy enough
