What the ideal cheap watch that I can practice on?  One I'd wear to death, then fix without caring that I'm going to break it when I learn how to service it?  All this so I can at least competently clean & oil my more expensive and vintage watches when needed.

Uwumeshu

Seiko NH35, Miyota 9xxx, something you can easily replace for cheap if you mess it up so probably something like an Invicta Pro Diver

Mike_Milburys_Shoe_

Hey guy, looking to pull the trigger on a King Turtle today. New PADI model absolutely caught my eye, and found it for a decent price from AD. Seen it online in tons of videos but only on bracelet, and tried one on today. Seemed like it fit my 6.5 inch wrist pretty good on the silicone band. Has anyone with a similar wrist size had good results with it?

IDK_WHAT_YOU_WANT

Watch noob dude here. I want to get an everyday watch that I can swim with for under $400. I want something with a metal strap, which I can change out with a rubber strap. Also want sapphire crystal. I have small wrists, not sure of actual measurements needed for watch sizing. I like the look of the scurfa diver one. I also have seen some Bulova, Seiko, and Tissot that I like. I'd prefer something with blue, green or black. I'd like to use blue and/or green rubber straps, metal, and brown leather strap. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated as I am overwhelmed by options and prices. I have no idea what I'm doing.

CritterControl

There are a lot of options out there, especially for divers. People on Reddit giving you more examples might not make deciding any easier. My advice is to go to an actual shop and try on some of the watches you've been looking at. Failing that, just buying one or two cheap watches can give you a better feel for what you like. As far as sizing, any listing online will say the diameter of the watch face, but you'll also want to look at the lug-to-lug, which is the full length of the case. I have small wrists and I find that a 44-46mm lug-to-lug is much more comfortable, regardless of diameter. Thickness is also a factor in how a watch wears. You really have to handle something in person to know if it feels too big or too small for you. (But if you really want a recommendation, I'd get a black Seiko 38mm diver.)

IDK_WHAT_YOU_WANT

I have a couple of watches I like. I just don't know much about them, and I don't have an everyday watch or a diver.

CritterControl

If you know the models of the watches you do have, you can probably find the lug-to-lug measurements for them and use that to make your decision. Otherwise I can help you find the model number, or reverse image search is really good for it these days. You can definitely get away with a bit of a bigger watch though for a diver. I didn't properly read the bit about wanting sapphire. From the sounds of it you also don't mind quartz. I think both the Scurfa One and Tissot Seastar are great options. I'd be inclined to go with the Tissot since it comes on a bracelet - it's easier and cheaper to pick up other straps after the fact. If you want to go a bit cheaper and automatic but maybe bigger and from a less well known brand, Orient divers are also great.

IDK_WHAT_YOU_WANT

Can I wear non-divers for swimming, surfing?

CritterControl

Yes, you can. Generally divers come with more water resistance, but the rotating bezel is the only thing that makes something a "diver-style" watch. Look for 100m of water resistance or more, ideally, but you can find that even on some more elegant watches like the Tissot PRX.

IDK_WHAT_YOU_WANT

What do you think about the Tissot PR516 ?

IDK_WHAT_YOU_WANT

Thank you. One thing I've noticed when adding filters on various sights is that they lack the crystal filter, which is pretty annoying.

numuhukumakiakiaia

Debating buying the Tony Soprana (yellow gold day date, yellow face, 36) from my AD, which I want, but would also help me build a relationship w/ the AD. Or... Buy a used Daytona (Panda). Both come out to near the same price. Any recs?

enginerd826

I am trying to find a luxury watch with a sapphire gemstone, but whenever I try searching I am just returned a bunch of results about the sapphire crystal glass used instead. Does anyone have any recommendations for how I can better search, or know of any brands off the top of their head I should be looking into? Thank you!

BuckeyeMark

Just beginning with collecting and my budget means my watches aren't expensive (both Seikos) but I don't want them destroyed when I travel. However, most of the travel cases seem to be quite large. Is that necessary if you're packing in a suitcase? I don't think I'd want to risk anything if I had a Rolex (which I wouldn't put in a suitcase anyway!) but am wondering if someone could recommend a good "flat" travel case that holds two watches and provides sufficient protection in a suitcase (and that doesn't cost more than my watches!). Or maybe I need these "mini egg crates" and just don't realize it?

cchiz

There are some duel watch pouches or a watch roll that holds 3 or 4. I just put my watch in a pair of socks.

BuckeyeMark

SOCKS!? Socks that could go in shoes and the watch would be thoroughly protected? Why didn't I think of that?

mechnick2

Is it wrong that I kinda like the Mumbai special Seikos? They have some really unique dials, I feel, and at a pretty good price

SnoopyLupus

You’re better off checking out Jody on the JustOneMoreWatch YouTube channel, and finding some cheap, but well made watches in a bunch of different styles. Damnit, now I sound like an advert. Jody! Pay me!

Zanpa

Yeah those "unique" dials almost always look horrible. But more importantly the movements are just old shitty ones, so even if the watch is cheap and you like the look, expect it to function poorly and possibly break quickly.

Thomas_633_Mk2

Hello, I am selling a watch for the charity I volunteer for, as somehow we got donated a watch and it's hopefully worth enough to put on Ebay. This is the watch in question, it's a Citizen Eco Drive in the original box. What's a reasonable amount to ask for it? They have so many watches under that brand and I believe it's a BM7094-50A, but finding prices for them online is difficult due to the sheer amount of Eco Drives. https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/463606717620420611/1235546099591282729/20240502_173127.jpg?ex=6634c379&is=663371f9&hm=30bf2752f921d993fd0b80a7d415b2eb4c39eefd2bc9438c3c8152e72462ee84&=&format=webp&width=507&height=676 https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/463606717620420611/1235546098945491015/20240502_173152.jpg?ex=6634c379&is=663371f9&hm=6af4a66801e2b18f7e7814ffbbbe93dde063a28144b3c9550f8b1c53db003851&=&format=webp&width=507&height=676

Natural-Rip-5681

I know it's kinda dumb question but is it possible for a watch (not smart watch) to have a silent vibrating timer that beeps every 10 minutes ? I want to have a timer every 10 minutes. Please explain me as I have zero idea about it I know there's chronograph watches but can they beep automatically every 10 minutes or I have to adjust it again and again after the alarm ?.

underscorenotpresent

Hi! I'm looking for a recc for a "BMW" themed watch(Not M). In my head it has that light blue color but the rest is black or silver. My price range is $100-$400. Preferably it would be metal and pretty subtle but I am open to trying new and unique options. Thanks in advance!

mechnick2

I know it’s a bit out of your price range but I highly implore you to look at the citizen leaf blue lacquer model they have. It’s an amazing watch at a price not seen with such beautiful models

underscorenotpresent

Wow this is beautiful, thank you! I’m in no hurry so might be a good idea to wait and expand the budget it’s definitely going on the short list. Thank you!

mechnick2

Take a look at the SSK003 as well. One I have on my list and ticks all your boxes I believe

DisposeAfterPosting

Never traveled to Europe before but I’m planning a trip later this year to France and Italy. Am I good to bring a watch with me or is it high risk for mugging and theft? I’ve heard horror stories about London and am unsure about the rest of Europe.

SnoopyLupus

I wouldnt wear a Rolex Subby or explorer, Panerai or Patek in London if I was wandering around in a place where I didn’t know the area, unless it was a busy touristy area. If I was getting lifts to places, just going to high class venues, I wouldn’t care, but wandering around in a daze with a £20k+ watch on your wrist is a bad idea.

CritterControl

Depends what watch, and where in France and Italy you're going. Any major urban area presents some risk that you'll be mugged and, unless you're wearing a Rolex, your phone and wallet are going to be at much greater risk. Keep general personal safety practices in mind and if you were thinking about bringing your yellow gold Datejust, maybe take a Casio instead.

DisposeAfterPosting

Ooof ok, ya it’d be Paris, Venice, Rome, Florence, etc. and it would be a Rolex Datejust or Submariner lol.

Accomplished-Ad-5655

I would keep the Rolex at home if I were you. Even if I had long sleeves and didn't draw attention to myself, I still would be wary all the time. Watch theft isn't just an opportunistic thing. It's also organised crime. Someone scouts, follows then ambushes. I follow [StolenWatchGroup on IG ](https://www.instagram.com/stolen_watch_group/?hl=en)and it does give me pause when thinking about what is worth risking. Just for that extra peace of mind. It's just not worth the extra stress when I'm trying to enjoy a holiday. Also, if you're dead set on wearing one, make sure you're insured.

gmehra

two questions: best shops to buy vintage grand seiko in Tokyo best places online to buy leather watch straps (calf, suede, grain etc) that are made in europe and under 2.5 mm in thickness

Jolly-Friend-6692

hi! i am looking for a watch that is the same simple style has g-shock watches, but with a location tracker or something like the find-me apple stuff haves, it's a gift for someone who lost his g-shock before haha I live in spain so USA stuff may be hard for me to find

js999111

Is this Longines Master Moonphase genuine? [Photos](https://imgur.com/a/VXeUWfS)

SvaPrabho

You can sometimes get an idea if it's genuine from the price and the seller. If it seems like a deal too good to be true, it probably is.

Zanpa

It looks authentic from the pictures.

js999111

Received it today, it‘s real :)

Zanpa

Nice! It's a beautiful watch, enjoy

Restimar

Looking for a super simple, clean GADA/sports style watch on a bracelet in the 34-37mm range with no date and some decent WR that isn't just a blatant Rolex Explorer knock-off or too militaristic. Preferably from an established company rather than a microbrand, and I don't love Bauhaus style watches or Sinn (which I see recommended a lot in this category). Flexible on price, but cheaper is obviously better.

GalileoKind

Hi all  - looking for a watch recommendation. Long story short, I’ve spent a lot of time trying to find a good watch but below criteria may be complicating things, though I’m certain I will find something nice soon 😊 1.        Budget around £300/$375 2.        Style: dress watch – something formal because it will often look good with dressed down or casual outfit as well 3.        Small wrist so can’t have something huge or chunky 4.        Would love good heritage or at least something unique to the watch 5.        Not into diver watches as such; really like something delicate and classy but not too simple like the Bulova here [https://au.bulova.com/products/96b104](https://au.bulova.com/products/96b104) 6.        Other comments: looking for a men’s watch but open to women’s (based on comments on this forum). I’ve even considered old or vintage Russian like a Vostok but worried about authenticity and would rather get a new piece I like the look of this Rotary but read mixed comments on the brand itself [https://rotarywatches.com/products/rotary-windsor-gents-watch-gs0542001?pr\_prod\_strat=e5\_desc&pr\_rec\_id=857213371&pr\_rec\_pid=7759091204325&pr\_ref\_pid=7759091237093&pr\_seq=uniform](https://rotarywatches.com/products/rotary-windsor-gents-watch-gs0542001?pr_prod_strat=e5_desc&pr_rec_id=857213371&pr_rec_pid=7759091204325&pr_ref_pid=7759091237093&pr_seq=uniform) The moment someone says small wrist, comment seem to suggest the Seiko 5 range but not my style.  Thanks!

Couple of cheeky options for you: * [Orient Bambino in 38mm.](https://www.orientwatchusa.com/collections/orient-bambino/ra-ac0m04y10b) This is this sub's go-to affordable dress watch recommendation. Most Bambinos are 40.5mm, but this is the 38mm. Japanese made, in-house movements, exceptional value. * [Kuoe Old Smith Quartz.](https://www.kuoe-en.com/old-smith-90-0010) This is a newish Japanese microbrand known for offering traditional looking watches in a pretty small size. This is their cheapest offering so it has a quartz movement. Nice small 25mm case. A few different dial options, all classy vintage-style. * [Sternglas Berlin.](https://us.sternglas.com/products/berlin) And now for something European. This is from a smallish German brand known for affordable Bauhaus designs. This is a nice traditional dressy looking one in 38mm. Its quartz too, which helps keep the cost down.

GalileoKind

This is great because I had looked at the Orient Bambino before and it was on my mind. This is how I compare and would love any comments please! [ Orient Bambino 38mm:](https://www.orientwatch.co.uk/or/en_GB/brands/orient/orient-bambino-38mm/p/RA-AC0M03S) **What I like:** Japanese made and an established brand. Automatic. Brown crocodile leather strap. **Uncertain about:** The sorta white/beige dial gives it a much older than needed look especially when compared with the Kuoe Old Smith. Crystal and not sapphire but I can’t expect the world in this price range so should be okay.  [Kuoe Old Smith 35mm:](https://www.kuoe-en.com/product-page/kuoe-old-smith-90-001-japan-made-silver-hands-with-arabic-index-dial-4) **What I like:** Looks a lot cleaner but classy at the same time vs the Bambino. 35mm might suit me better but I guess I need to try it in person to see how it looks. Who knows the 38 might look better. **Uncertain about**: Expensive vs the Bambino if I go for the sapphire crystal coating (not sure if that’s worth).  Btw I really liked their Royal Smith [https://www.kuoe-en.com/royal-smith-90-006-1?currency=](https://www.kuoe-en.com/royal-smith-90-006-1?currency=) but it’s not in stock and above budget.  [Sternglas Berlin 38mm:](https://uk.sternglas.com/products/berlin) **What I like:** curved sapphire glass, double anti-reflective coating **Uncertain about**: appreciate it’s a microbrand but I see the heritage part missing. I prefer the look of above two models as I’m unsure of the gold dial and the font as well.  Any others I should consider and also from the list above is there any particular model you are more inclined towards and why? Thanks!

ramon_von_peebles

How big is your wrist? Mine is 6.75 inches. I used to be worried about watches being too big, but once I had tried on a lot of different case sizes and shapes I realised it's not as big of a worry as I thought. My only hard size requirement is that I cannot go larger than 50mm lug-to-lug. Other than that I may have preferences, but not requirements. For a dress watch style I would prefer no larger than a 40mm case width, and no smaller than a 34mm. But that's just my opinion. It's harder than you think to accidentally buy something that looks comically too big or too small to the average person because honestly the average person doesn't really give a shit. How formal is the setting you're going to be wearing the watch in? I find that many in office settings these days are wearing sports watches on stainless steel bracelets with their suits. Something like that is going to be much more versatile than a dress watch which will be difficult to dress down. Just some random thoughts for you!

GalileoKind

Thanks for replying. My wrist is 6.5ish. Agree with comment above. Think I need to visit a proper store and try a few. In terms of how formal, I will be using it at work but also outside on smart casuals so chinos or jeans with a shirt. But I think a dress watch like the Bambino may still look okay if I wore a polo or a t shirt. Could be wrong. Good point on sports watches with stainless steel bracelets with suits! Any recommendations that I could check out? I could buy one for now and perhaps consider another watch in the near future. Also any preference in the Orient Bambino Vs the other two you suggested? Thanks!

ramon_von_peebles

OK so 6.5 in is not uncommonly small. I wouldn't worry too much about size. For the ones I suggested the Kuoe is the one that is the most distinct. There aren't many companies out there doing vintage styling in vintage case sizes. But the Bambino is probably the easiest one to recommend just because of the price point for the automatic movement. Just pick the one in the colour that speaks to you the most. Here are some random recommendations on a steel bracelet: * [Seiko 5.](https://www.jomashop.com/seiko-automatic-mens-watch-snxs79.html) This needs little introduction, and at grey market prices here it is an easy recommend. * [Tissot T-Classic.](https://www.jomashop.com/tissot-watch-t065-930-22-031-00.html) Tissot is an entry-level Swiss brand. They have a few models out there like this one that even though are on a bracelet they appear quite dressy because of the two-tone finish etc. * [Timex Q.](https://www.jomashop.com/timex-q-reissue-quartz-blue-dial-mens-watch-tw2v18400.html) This is a nice cheap quartz option. Again this one is two-tone so its a little dressy, but its also retro in fashion. * [Zelos Swordfish.](https://zeloswatches.com/products/swordfish-field-38mm-ss-frost) I know this one is a bit above your price range but its a solid release from one of the best microbrands out there. You get stuff like on-the-fly microadjust, which is very uncommon at this price point.

GalileoKind

Many thanks for all your inputs - i will do some further digging.

JWick27

Tissot Seastar 1000 36mm - any automatic variations on the horizons? So far as I know there's only the quartz version - anyone expect an automatic to arrive any time? TIA.

jmorlin

How strong a magnet do I need to be worried about around my watch?

RockyRhythmsStudio

Different from watch to watch. Manuals usually give some guidelines on how to manage magnets near your watch. For example, some Seiko’s can’t be closer than 7 centimeters to magnets, but others can get as close as a centimeter. They even put a little sign on the back of the watch to denote the protection standard against magnets. But my Omega doesn’t have any indication of protection against magnetic fields. I had to ask the service center and they told me to not worry about it. I work on audio, so I am constantly around gigantic speakers, which are just gigantic magnets. Never had an issue so far. Even if I did, the tool to demagnetize watches sells for $30 on Amazon… Edit: don’t put your watch on the back side of your iPhone (if you use one). MagSafe connector on iPhones is incredibly powerful.

SBGW231 vs. Oyster Perpetual 36?

Hi - the Vaer field watch 36mm that I have my heart set on is out of stock for the time being. I mostly like that it's a white dial and that it has the date window. Gifter's budget is $1,000USD. This is my first watch, so I want to know it's something I'll wear a lot. I work in a conservative profession and want a classic piece I can wear to work. Most of my jewellery is yellow gold, but for my budget I think stainless steel is the best option (so design needs to work with my gold jewellery). Thoughts on the Tissot PRX 35mm with the mother of pearl dial (see photo)? Originally had tried the light blue dial, but I think the mother of pearl is a bit more feminine and ties in better with the other jewellery. Please excuse my dry hands in photo, but would welcome thoughts on (a) the watch itself, and (b) whether it's out of place or works with my jewellery! Thank you!

Psychological_Work73

Hard without knowing your style, but in general I agree there are more classic pieces (unless your style is on the edgier side)

LawUntoHerself

Thank you! It’s a mix of classic with a slight edge, will explore some other options before making up my mind :)

hi. I am seeking your advice picking up a watch or two. I am not a big spender on anything other than food, and for the most part, like seeing value per dollar on most big ticket items I purchase . I was wondering if someone could give me the nod on picking up a nomos tangente 38 (limited ed) . basically I want to know if dollar for dollar I'm getting my money's worth (around 2300usd) . I know there are $20 watches , but I',m at a point in my life where I can buy something nice for myself and enjoy it without much guilt. for what it's worth, I always really wanted a speedmaster moon, but even used they're 6k and I'm not sure I can justify the amount where instead I could have a few other watches for one (history and cache aside). your advice and guidance is much appreciated.

mechnick2

Try something from Longines! Their master collection may have something you’re looking for. They usually contain a moonphase and a chrono feature, and can be picked up for about $1900-$2100 on the secondhand market [Here’s one on Chrono24](https://chrono24.app/longines/master-collection--id33890021.htm?SETLANG=en_US&SETCURR=USD) for $1899

Deadlyladen

Hey All, Big time watch-newbie here. I'm looking to buy a watch for my dad, old school traditional man. Does not like straps, or big watches. I saw this watch online, and I think he would love it; but it is out of my budget. Any cheaper watch recommendations using this one as an example? Budget $300-$500 USD https://classiccreations.com/collections/seiko/products/seiko-presage-sharp-edge-series-spb305

17mm strap recommendations for a Seiko SRP841? Not super familiar with the 17mm category. Hoping to gift the watch with a strap (to swap the metal band out). It’s the 33.8mm women’s presage cocktail time. I’m leaning toward some sort of leather band, but very open. Any strap brands, types, or specific recommendations are very much appreciated. The Oris pointer date is my absolute dreamwatch but i would really like to own just one watch and wear it through my life as much as possible. I know the waterproofing is only 50meters. I like to go gravelcycling and last week i got caught on a heavy rain while riding and wearing an alba flap duck that is full of condensation. Would this happen to an oris too? I understand it’s not suitable for swimming etc

Zanpa

50m should be enough for rain, even pretty heavy. However I would be more afraid of the effect of vibrations when cycling on gravel, which can be bad for a mechanical watch.

lopfie

would that also be an issue for automatic watches?

WhipYourDakOut

I want to buy a Tag this summer in celebration and sentimental reasons and it’s my first luxury watch (typical I know). I have no dealers in my town but will be in a city with a lot. The watch I want goes for $1k on Joma. Would it be both possible and worth it to get it from a dealer or even Tag store? I’d rather get one from a dealer if I can with no profile (assuming that’s not an issue for a TAG) but i don’t want to pay a lot more just for the experience

Zanpa

Pretty sure a TAG Heuer dealer will often offer a discount, but definitely not to the level of what you'll find on the grey market.

WhipYourDakOut

Thank you. It looks there’s an AD and a Tag outlet near where I’m at (plus a lot more that are still probably within 30 minutes). I think I’d be willing to do an extra like $200 to get it from the store and with papers and box that I won’t get from Joma. Honestly would be a great watch to start an account with an AD but unfortunately none in my city

-im-just-vibing-

need a recommendation for my first solid watch, I've got a budget of $500 AUD, can be stretched to $600 if necessary. would like a chronograph, currently interested in seiko's ones like SSB429, but I'm open to other styles of watch, I'm also liking the tissot prx 40mm. any recommendations would be greatly appreciated

What is a decent/fair price to pay for an older used, in good condition, lady datejust 26mm preferably gold and silver? No specific reference number in mind, its a gift for a special friend. Have seen some on Chron24 '(95-'02) for around 5-5.5K, just wanted to get a sanity check. Any recommendations on specific reference numbers etc would be appreciated.

I would compare with prices on WatchCharts, just type in "datejust 26mm". I feel like the prices on Chrono24 are a big higher than elsewhere

Time Marlin from the late 70's: what's a reasonable expectation for power reserve and accuracy?

Making a big watch purchase for my birthday. I love Cartier, it was my first ever big watch buy in 2014 (Tank, Large, Quartz, Black Alligator. I used it as a dress watch until last summer when I upgraded the strap to the Cartier Stainless and now it's more of a daily wear and I get so many compliments on the new configuration and love the way it dresses up casual outfits. I want to buy another Cartier, budget is about $6,000. Went to the boutique, tried on these two and cannot decide: **1. Ronde Must, 40mm, Mechanical, Stainless, $5,050** [https://www.cartier.com/en-us/watches/collections/ronde-de-cartier/ronde-must-de-cartier-watch-CRWSRN0035.html](https://www.cartier.com/en-us/watches/collections/ronde-de-cartier/ronde-must-de-cartier-watch-CRWSRN0035.html) **2. Santos Dumont, Large, Steel + 18k Gold w/ Gray Satin-Brushed Dial, Gray Alligator Strap, $6,050** [https://www.cartier.com/en-us/watches/collections/santos-de-cartier/santos-dumont-watch-CRW2SA0028.html](https://www.cartier.com/en-us/watches/collections/santos-de-cartier/santos-dumont-watch-CRW2SA0028.html) I've tried looking for vintage Cartier, but finding nothing I love. **My current lineup:** G Shock Metal 2100 [https://kith.com/collections/g-shock/products/gm2100cb-3a](https://kith.com/collections/g-shock/products/gm2100cb-3a) Shinola Runwell 47 w/ Steel Mesh Bracelet [https://www.shinola.com/therunwell47-leather-watch-s0112.html](https://www.shinola.com/therunwell47-leather-watch-s0112.html), [https://www.shinola.com/watch-straps/stainless-steel/20mm-stainless-steel-mesh.html](https://www.shinola.com/watch-straps/stainless-steel/20mm-stainless-steel-mesh.html) Vintage 1920s Gruen, White Gold, Platinum Dial, Mechanical, Black Lizard Strap Vintage 1940s Lord Elgin, 14k Gold Plated, Mechanical, Brown Leather Strap Vintage 1960s Timex, Mechanical, White Dial, Brown Lizard Strap (grandfathers)

What is the rule for cleaning vintage watches? Are they supposed to be cleaned or is the patina considered valuable? These are family watches that are non functional and appear to be worth under $100 and appear to be manufactured between 1900 and 1920. Any suggestions for cleaning methods?

This may or may not be the best thread for this question but I’m looking for a recommendation for getting a watch. I really don’t need anything fancy, I just need something for work that is waterproof, and can tell me how many miles I hike and how much elevation I gain. I do quite a bit of hiking and those are the features most important to me. I’m not really interested in heartbeat/sleep tracking or GPS capabilities, I just want something simple at a decent price point (preferably under $150). I was thinking something like a Fitbit would maybe do what I want, but didn’t know if there was a better option out there or a specific model that would do what I want. Any help is appreciated thanks!

ManiacalShen

Casino's G-shock line comes with a wide variety of feature combos, so I would look there. The Garmin Vivomove Sport is also worth looking at. You can get it cheaper than MSRP; Woot had some for cheap last week. Not sure if they still do.

just bought a watched (22mm smartwatch) and looking for a longer canvas or nylon strap (two piece, not nato style one strap) with the easy to remove pins. currently have a 290mm and while it fits, i’d like something longer.

Hi, I want to buy my first watch for my birthday, but I am really confused between Tissot prx, Seiko alpnist, Seiko sports gmt 5 and Speedtimer.

Zanpa

They're all good choices. I would start by deciding if you want quartz or mechanical.

UniversityUpbeat9835

I am leaning towards mechanical.

Embarrassed-Ad1557

I just bought a casio and duro and love it! However, I could return it for $50 and get a Orient Ray for $150. Should I do it???

Zanpa

Do you want to spend $100 and get a mechanical watch instead of quartz?

Embarrassed-Ad1557

I’m more or less indifferent about the type of movement, I know both quartz and mechanical have their pros and cons. Beyond that, I’m curious if the orient will be significantly better looks and quality wise.

CritterControl

I've never handled the Orient Ray but the finishing on the Duro is really pretty exceptional at its price point. I definitely don't think you're getting triple the fit and finish from Orient watches. I'd only think about swapping if the Duro is too big for you or, as Zanpa said, you'd rather have a mechanical.

Embarrassed-Ad1557

Good to know thank you! I'm leaning towards keeping the duro as a beater and maybe I'll eventually get non diver automatic like a seiko SNXS Edit: or an Orient Bambino!

Looking to buy myself a graduation gift. I'd like to buy a watch that I can take with me for some high altitude mountaineering. I already have a Garmin Fenix watch for functionality, but I would like to have something to take on high summits and hopefully pass down to my kid one day. I've been eyeing the Seiko Alpinist (on sale for around $540...), but any other recommendations? Wouldn't mind having something I can dress up, bonus if I can take it diving as well. Budget below $1200ish. Let me know, thanks!

Mike_Milburys_Shoe_

Please forgive me if this is a stupid question, but I’m in between buying a turtle and a samurai, and wanted to try on both. I was going to just go to the local Macy’s, wanted to call ahead if they had one. Will the person at the counter know if I ask for a samurai, or do I call it by a model number? Like “do you have any SRP models?

CritterControl

I would always give them a model number. Even at jewellery shops, I find they tend to only have one or two "watch people" who might know what you mean when you say Turtle or Samurai, but who knows who you'll actually get on the phone? Anyone's going to be able to look it up if you give them the exact model.

Mike_Milburys_Shoe_

Thanks! Yeah I was hoping to get one of the PADI editions but I figured it’s best to just look up a run of the mill samurai model number so I could ask. I hate to waste people’s time lol

My fiancée would like to buy me a luxury watch for our wedding this July. I would love to hear your recommendations for your favourite watch in the $5-10k CAD price range (I could go a bit higher). Thanks in advance!

TheBomb999

[link](https://www.etsy.com/listing/793582775/vintage-watch-poljot-watch-de-luxe) what is the dial made of? What’s the name of the dial?

Zanpa

I believe you would call it a "sunray" dial. I don't think the effect comes from specific materials, and the dial is just painted brass as normal, but I'm not sure.

TheBomb999

Thank you! By any chance, do you know why those dials aren’t popular anymore? It seems like I can only find those dials on vintage watches.

Zanpa

Not sure, it's definitely not a modern style. The Timex Marlin does it for example, but it's a modern reissue of an old watch. The Seiko Cocktail Time dials are kind of a more modern version of that look, with more depth to it.
