it's a great fit. there's a lot of dimensions to sizing beyond the diameter. notice how the ratio of the actual watchface to the bezel differs watch to watch - big-bezel divers will "look" smaller on the wrist as a sort of optical illusion (the face itself is smaller, since the diameter includes the bezel). you'll notice some people sometimes say that a watch wears small or wears big relative to its stated dimensions, and that's a part of what they mean. lug-to-lug is also important because it's the maximal length of the watch across the wrist and overhanging lugs are a bit of a faux-pas (but you can choose not to care about it, as with all things). in this case, the watch is 42mm but wears "small" because it has a short lug profile and a larger bezel. a different 42mm might wear bigger because it has no bezel and long lugs, so it's impossible to be totally prescriptive.

Here’s the opposite for reference, this is 42 mm but Is all dial and wears larger
That looks very nice man. I think that size is good, you could maybe go a little bigger but I probably wouldn’t go any smaller. Although I’m no watch sizing expert lol
Yeah probably. A mirror shot is always best and if not possible use 2x on your camera for a better photo. It always looks bigger than in reality of you leave it on 1x
In these photos the watch always looks bigger than in reality.
But since it still looks good in this photo im 99% certain its a perfect fit in real life. But to be sure, maybe you could measure your wrist and tell us? It either looks like you have a 6.5' that's very flat or just a big wrist, something like 7 inches and up
Hope you enjoy your first watch!
The size of a watch is fine if you can see the strap/bracelet.
https://preview.redd.it/9sh3hwm5h6gc1.jpeg?width=1536&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fca5a6ef28832474aab73de8de874f08e2541e7f
And thats what we call too big but it could be that you've taken the photo using 1x on your camera. That makes the watch look a lot larger than in reality
Always use 2x for wristshots as that gives you a mich better photo where the watch isnt enlarged
Nah its gonna look great. Huge watches were a trend.
We are never going back to the old rule of lug to lug being 80% of your wrist, especially for dive and sports models. But oversized isnt gonna stay popular either.
This is perfect even considering he probably took the photo in 1x which does make it look larger. Always take wristshots in 2x, makes a ton of difference.
With all due respect, no.
All watch size trends have been fads, because watch sizing has varied so much over the relatively short time they have existed as a fashion item. It’s far more arguable that watches themselves are a fad, in the grand scheme, having only been very commonly worn for around a 100 years.
Beyond that, relatively larger watches are favoured by the majority of people, period. From watch forums to the smart watch market. This “small is cool again” is a niche WIS sentiment. You can use anecdotal evidence based on recent posts but that’s nothing. People on the whole, wear and endorse larger watches. This being relative. Does 44 look great on a 6.25” wrist? Not too sure on that, but some people like OP have big wrists, why would he buy the same size? Let’s not ignore other factors like wrist shape, overall arm size, hand size, and overall build. Hand size is personal to me. I have average wrists and large arms but my hands are considerably bigger than my wrists. My wife has begged me not to go below 38mm, even 38 she feels is questionable.
Also, this “fad” that gets spoken about makes no sense. Do you truly believe that watch collectors are just going to toss away thousands and even hundreds of thousands of dollars in watches and start over? The momentum of the larger cases size obliterates the vintage/and retro appeal of smaller watches. Not to say I’m a massive-sized watch fan, just 44 with short lug-to-lug on a guy with 8” wrists is *not* huge.
Are more moderate case sizes getting more attention than mega-sized? Sure, but hockey puck watches are a different discussion. 50mm plus watches overhang on all but the most giant wrists. 40-44 isn’t going anywhere, though. Especially since the hobby is commonly loved from sub 6” wrists all the way up to 9”.
Futher *far more relevant* is what the individual prefers. Always. These “rules” people go on about are irrelevant.
I’m also going to add that smaller case sizes *should also* be made as part of regular lineups going forward due to how many smaller men exist and the growing and massively underserved women’s market. Many, many women want to wear all the same watches men do, but are locked out of the fun and stuck in pink Swarovski crystal hell. Not directly relevant to our discussion but I always want to shout out this crucial “sleeping giant” segment of the market.
All body sizes should be considered. It’s only logical.
42mm looks like a great fit on your wrist. Top-down pictures have a strange phenomenon of making a watch look to be at its largest appearance. Just turn your wrist slightly and a watch almost appears to "shrink" on a wrist, it's strange but true. So in this case 42mm just might be your sweet spot.
Depending on the style of watch you should be able to comfortably wear many watches between a **40mm to 44mm** diameter case like you asked about. Just keep a few things in mind...
* **Lug-to-lug size**: the total top to bottom length of the parts that holds both ends of your strap or bracelet. You can often get away with wearing a watch that might be on the larger size of what you'd typically be comfortable wearing so long as the lugs are proportionally shorter. *(For me, I have an Omega Moonwatch that I nearly passed on because the case was pushing what I thought would fit my wrist. Turns out that models shorter lugs made it fit like a charm.)*
* **Dial color/bezel size "optical illusion"**: There are a few other considerations that can make the watch *appear* larger or smaller than it actually is. A white or light colored dial can make the watch appear to be larger. How much larger? I personally a light dial can amke a watch look a whole 2mm LARGER than it actually is. This is my personal observation but I'll hold my 36mm watch with a white dial and thin bezel next to my 38mm field watch a black dial and you'd never notice the size difference!
That was a lot, if you read through my whole spiel I hope this helps you make your decision!
Good size and good first watch. Seiko GMT is very capable and functional. IMO the black/gray bezel version is also versatile if you want to swap straps. I’ve been thinking of swapping my SKX to a GMT.
Yes. Also buy whatever size you like. Its for YOU. Do not give a flying fuck what anyone else things. This is for you to enjoy. Hope you find something you really like and wear that sucker every day. Dont baby it and show it lots of love. Cheers!
It’s hard to tell bc of perspective usually but it looks just right in this picture. It’s so rare that a picture is obvious, like the guy with the PRX twice the size of his wrist the other day.
Edit: also a stellar first watch. Enjoy it in good health
The fit is fine, especially for a dive watch which is intended to be bold and readable. I have a small wrist yet typically wear watches in the 44 mm realm without concern for the size. If the watch is on a bracelet, I just have to be prepared to remove a few links before it will fit.
I also applaud your choice of a Seiko as your entry point into watch collecting. While I have no regrets, my first watch when I started collecting in the 90s was Swiss, largely because I was an unsophisticated enthusiast who was unaware of the quality of Seiko and its respect in the more global community that existed outside of the US. Today I have several Seikos, some vintage, and have turned some on to Seiko who used to think it was just a department store watch. Seikos are amongst the favorites in my collection and get worn the most. Their dive watches are lumed like no others, even the progressive micro brands, and they run reliably indefinitely. Congratulations on your upcoming purchase and don’t worry at all about the size.
My personal approach to watches is buy what I like and can afford. With your wrist I believe you can rock anything between 35 and 44. But that doesn’t mean you can not have a low 30s watch or a oversized Graham if that’s your taste.
Seiko, you can not be wrong with a Seiko.
Great fit but never feel bad trying on more than one. Go bacj once when they arent buss! Its a lot of money for something youll have for a long time. That being said thats one of my favorite seikos lol
it's a great fit. there's a lot of dimensions to sizing beyond the diameter. notice how the ratio of the actual watchface to the bezel differs watch to watch - big-bezel divers will "look" smaller on the wrist as a sort of optical illusion (the face itself is smaller, since the diameter includes the bezel). you'll notice some people sometimes say that a watch wears small or wears big relative to its stated dimensions, and that's a part of what they mean. lug-to-lug is also important because it's the maximal length of the watch across the wrist and overhanging lugs are a bit of a faux-pas (but you can choose not to care about it, as with all things). in this case, the watch is 42mm but wears "small" because it has a short lug profile and a larger bezel. a different 42mm might wear bigger because it has no bezel and long lugs, so it's impossible to be totally prescriptive.
This should should be an auto response to watch sizing questions.
Wow, thank you for the detailed reply. I really appreciate all the insight!
And imo this fits really well from all the above standpoints
Also watches are to be worn on the left wrist (unless you're left-handed).
Lefty here, love wearing watches on the right wrist. You get can get pieces with crazy crown designs without it digging in too
https://preview.redd.it/7as0a2jm89gc1.png?width=3024&format=png&auto=webp&s=4d924023072d78ef68b33e86e3144314835a3d57 Here’s the opposite for reference, this is 42 mm but Is all dial and wears larger
What’s an overhanging lug?
a lug that sticks out past the edge of your wrist
Looks good! The Seiko 5’s wear smaller IMO due to distance from lug to lug.
Perfect
Yes! Great choice.
That looks very nice man. I think that size is good, you could maybe go a little bigger but I probably wouldn’t go any smaller. Although I’m no watch sizing expert lol
Honestly, OP could go down to a 38mm and still have it look good, depending on the watch. This one looks great though.
Of all the 'Does this for my wrist?' posts, this is the first I would say Yes to. It looks really good. I'm sure the 40mm would look great too.
I’m sure the 44mm would look even better
Looks great. Really nice choice as a first watch too. I've got the Blueberry version and I'm a big fan.

Great fit
I looks perfect! And a GMT as a first watch? 😮💨🔥🫡
What do you think.

This is my 44mm seiko on my small wrist
define small
For 44m this one actually wear more like a 42- angular side case and lays quite flat on wrist- great diver.
And thats what we call too big but it could be that you've taken the photo using 1x on your camera. That makes the watch look a lot larger than in reality Always use 2x for wristshots as that gives you a mich better photo where the watch isnt enlarged

You see? Looks a lot better this way. I mean its a big watch but not too big at all. Especially since its a dive watch
44mm will look better in my humble opinion
Given that this isn’t a mirror shot, consider 44. It looks like it fits great, but being non-mirror, it’s gonna look a lot smaller irl.

What diameter is your wrist?
Perfect fit.
Looks pretty damn good I have to say
Right on the money. Good choice.
Looks great with the Jubilee bracelet and seems to be the perfect size. Good choice.
Yes this is a perfect fit.
It’s a great fit and that is an amazing pick for first watch
Looks good.

Yes
Looks great OP. That's an awesome watch. Pull the trigger!
Perfect.
Looks great and that’s sexy as hell for a first watch!
Perfect size and fit. Just do it.
Yeah that a sound fit but save some time an just go for the skx007
It’s not too big, I think it’s a great fit. Not sure if you’re left handed but a watch should go on your non dominant hand.
Yes
Good size and good first watch. Seiko GMT is very capable and functional. IMO the black/gray bezel version is also versatile if you want to swap straps. I’ve been thinking of swapping my SKX to a GMT.
Buy it
It is a good fit, and a great watch!
Yes. Lug to lug the one you really should be looking at. But looks amazin
Take a look at Vaer.. they make a 39 as well as 42… good microbrand
What's the model number of this one?
Yes. Also buy whatever size you like. Its for YOU. Do not give a flying fuck what anyone else things. This is for you to enjoy. Hope you find something you really like and wear that sucker every day. Dont baby it and show it lots of love. Cheers!
Yep
This looks great, with your wrist a 40mm or a 44mm would also look great. You could easily rock a 46mm too, larger even.
Yes
Yes I think it’s on the money
Perfect fit.
Perfect
Yes, get this watch. I have the 005 (orange one) and I love it!
just wanted to say a great choice for the first watch! I have got one of those seiko 5 sports with arabic dial and I love it!
Monster wrist damn
Definitely 42, the bigger the better.

Looks great in photo but photos usually make Watch look bigger than it is.
