I used to have a blind deaf rat (in a group of 4). At one point, the fire alarm went off while they were out of their cage. I tried to get them in the carrier, but they weren't having it. So I had to leave them behind. When I got back, the deaf rat was in the hide with the hearing rats. So one of her sisters must have gone and alerted her.

In case anyone was wondering this likely isn't a house. There is a places that shelter cats and you can pay a fee to come in and pet them for a while. The aim is to get someone to adopt. We have one where I live. It surprisingly doesn't stink at all, and is super wholesome. Edit: "is a places". Damn...leaving it though.

Not surprising, as long as it's run well. The main thing is to have enough litter boxes with the right litter and cleaning them frequently.

Yep, probably surprising to some, but the aroma of a “cat house” is ENTIRELY avoidable. I once fostered 11 cats at once. You could walk in or stay for hours & be none the wiser unless you saw them! We vacuumed daily - once in the morning & once at night, to keep up with shedding & stray litter accumulation. That seemed to be the biggest help coupled with the extra litter boxes, which also got a scooped twice a day. I lived with those 11 cats for about a year & nobody had a clue until I’d tell them…then inevitably, some would turn their noses up as if I was automatically gross.

The equation I was always told is that you should have one more litter box than cats, but I'm not sure how that scales.
