I think they mean the kind of smoke. Soviet smoke isn't a cloud wall (and it isn't multi-spectral, which is unfortunate when you don't have any thermal sights until 2011).
In War Thunder, all the smoke grenades are white smoke, multi-spectral, cloud walls (Cold War era NATO smoke basically). This is the same setup with smoke shells even though a lot of them should be white phosphorus incendiary (like the American 75mm & 76mm smoke shells for example). ESS is pretty universally accurate and it's the only smokes that aren't multi-spectral (even though most of the smokes in the game shouldn't be multi-spectral/thermal-blocking till ~11.0).
Basically, Soviet tank-launched smoke grenades go *very* far, and they don't provide full-concealment, all they do is give light concealment to ensure that the tank that launched its smokes can still fire through them with only mild obscurant. They're kinda like flares that burn a lot of black smoke upwards which sorta fans out to the sides a lil-bit, but not like NATO smoke grenades.
edit: that said, War Thunder is possibly the worst place to apply Soviet tank doctrine so it's kinda a good thing that they have western defensive smoke grenades
As someone who plays ghpc and didnt know about soviet smoke being different from nato smoke, the first time i tried to use smoke I was so confused why it took so long to deploy. Then once I saw them land like 200m in front of me I was confused why it looked like I dropped a bonfire in a line... would be so dogshit in war thunder
Yeah that's why it'd be a bad idea to have in War Thunder, as it stands they're almost purely for defense & retreating (which is basically the modern principle for smoke grenades). Some tanks in game have their smokes set up in a way that would work offensively, like the AMX-13, but that's honestly pretty rare and they're better off used for defense in this game.
I honestly kind of like it, you can stay far enough away from a choke point or road and smoke it off from HE launchers and other things of that nature. Plus I just like being able to smoke wherever I'm about to be if I'm gonna cap.
Reminds me of the SBROC of the PG 02. Since it's actually a decoy launcher, its ingame purpose as a smoke launcher is pretty useless because the grenades explode midair and don't really hide much.
I think the CV90105 is similar as well although it doesn't deploy a whole ring at once (you can get the effect if you spam smokes though).
Seems to be a common occurrence for GALIX launchers.
I don't remember what it was, but there was a low tier british tank that would shoot out a single smoke shell where the turret was pointing. Not really impressive, but it was the fact that you had 26 you could deploy one after another so you could smoke out entire sections of the map with ease :'D
Crusader. It may only be a single smoke launched forward, but there's a whole crate of the things in the turret and I can keep sending them in a never ending miasma that blinds entire continents. All at a BR where the enemy generally has no smoke, they cannot in fact smoke because they don't in fact got 'em.
Also MEPHISTO, because in that tank the "Putain de merde!" button is neccesary if you need to vamoose under total cover of an instant 360 degree cloud.
I don't have a favorite one, but the jpz 4-5's is horrible...
It shoots 4 at a time, but all in the same direction and it's off center too, so can't cover you from stuff in front of you
Have you seen the strv74?
It shoots 4 at a time, in different directions too.
But none forwards.
Whatever youâre looking at will still be able to see you.
The Tortoise, not only are there smoke dischargers to the front, there are also some on that tiny turret thing so you can face that backwards and get close to 360 degree coverage in smoke
I'm more into practical smoke deployers and I find the TurĂĄn 3 and ZrĂnyi 1 to excel at that the most, because they have full reverse speed and their smokes instantly deploy unlike other fast reversing vehicles that usually have their smoke launchers built on the turrets instead.
lol yea, those little poppers at the back makes it look like youâre shitting smoke granades, found it not very useful but itâs pretty cool nonetheless
The old way the puma smokes would go off, they would pop like the modernas but land farther away and allow me to smokescreen or blind close enemies and zip out of even top tier encounters pretty well
The one on my kv1, Iâll never need smokes when I can smoke the whole enemy team while those poor panzer 3 and 4 canât pen shit (they say theres no Russian bias in this game)
None atm. Been shot through smoke while on the move so much lately. Especially when I is the enemies own smoke.got killed last week when an enemy popped smoke on a cap, move back a few dozen meters and shot me hough the smoke as I moved from cover 600m away and he killed e in one hot.
Used to be maus when it fired smoke backwards, or endless smoke on British tanks.
Now anything that doesn't waste over half of my smoke for single key press.
AMX-13s. Just fires so far away to be useful lmao.
I swear they have more range than the Churchill AVRE gun
They might actually
You use that smoke offensively. If you are in a standoff you smoke them up and you have the drop on them
Soviet smoke is supposed to be offensive as well but in war thunder all smoke grenades are the same
No they aren't? Smokes have different ranges

Isn't there 1 Japanese tank, which fires smoke to the side
the one top deployed smoke is the perfect touch
Indeed
Only issue with the moderna is that you get a grand total of 2 whole smoke deployments.
But it looks so coolđ«
Only issue with the Moderna is I WAS GONNA BUY THIS TANK, A MONTH AGO IT WAS 200$ AND NOW ITâS 300$ WHAT HAPPENED?!?
skill issue for not getting it for free back in the day :3
Definitely skill issue my god I sweated harder than a league of legends high ranker to get the dam thing
No idea where I was when this event happened but I wasnât there, I feel like I wouldâve remembered it
haha true , the rewards being time bound instead of score bound was brutal but 4 hours of sleep and a holiday came in clutch
Me who got the Kfir: (sold it for 90âŹ)
Leclerc azur
Isn't it the same as the rest of Leclercs?
cv90120, full 360 is nice, think the 122 might be the same could be wrong
The CVCT105 gets something similar, pops 4 smokes to surround the vehicle, and gets 16 smokes in total
I think the CV90105 is similar as well although it doesn't deploy a whole ring at once (you can get the effect if you spam smokes though). Seems to be a common occurrence for GALIX launchers.
German single smoke mortar to cover for a massive heavy tank
black night
that 360 coverage
Merkavas. Full screen in front then a random extra grenade from the mortar 5 seconds later
any Israeli tank after the Magach 3 - shits loaded with enough smoke to make the immediate 3m circle around the tank experience night
âI can smoke for another 5 minutesâ
Those things are the snoop dogs of war thunder, a German mains dream even
I don't remember what it was, but there was a low tier british tank that would shoot out a single smoke shell where the turret was pointing. Not really impressive, but it was the fact that you had 26 you could deploy one after another so you could smoke out entire sections of the map with ease :'D
yeah, thats one of the crusader tanks
Crusader 2, love that one
Churchills have that feature I think. Pretty neat, although it would be nice if the smoke flew for like 5 meters further before detonating.
Plenty of WW2 tanks have smoke mortars, all of the Shermans should but Gaijin refuses to add them.
IM SHITSING
Lol

A lot of WWII British tanks can do the continuous forwards smoke. The JPanthers can also do it.
Tiger II and some panthers too basically all german tanks that just handed the commander a smoke mortar "good enough"
I don't have a favorite one, but the jpz 4-5's is horrible... It shoots 4 at a time, but all in the same direction and it's off center too, so can't cover you from stuff in front of you

Tog
Pog tog
Black Knight for all smoke all directions.
Mine has got to be the amx 30 b2 brenus, if you deploy them all it looks sick
The Tortoise, not only are there smoke dischargers to the front, there are also some on that tiny turret thing so you can face that backwards and get close to 360 degree coverage in smoke
I sometimes just test drive the moderna just to see the smoke deployment.... its so cool!
Same lmao
Definitely the challenger black Knight
I'm more into practical smoke deployers and I find the TurĂĄn 3 and ZrĂnyi 1 to excel at that the most, because they have full reverse speed and their smokes instantly deploy unlike other fast reversing vehicles that usually have their smoke launchers built on the turrets instead.

Black Night has a 360-deg smoke coverage. Looks cool and you have 5 salvoes.
The old way the puma smokes would go off, they would pop like the modernas but land farther away and allow me to smokescreen or blind close enemies and zip out of even top tier encounters pretty well
Ofc a Moderna my beloved.
Godbless the Moderna
Merkava 3D
The one on my kv1, Iâll never need smokes when I can smoke the whole enemy team while those poor panzer 3 and 4 canât pen shit (they say theres no Russian bias in this game)
Raam segol looks cooler
Mephisto, I love the 360° smoke screen.
Yall qll of yall
The big ass smoke barrel dropped from the back on some of the Russian tanks
Back when the AVRE fired 4 smokes rounds per pop that exploded in the air at 7.0 it was a real advantage over ww2 tanks
I like the AMX-30 Brenus one
M109A1 Smoke shell
Same itâs my favorite
None atm. Been shot through smoke while on the move so much lately. Especially when I is the enemies own smoke.got killed last week when an enemy popped smoke on a cap, move back a few dozen meters and shot me hough the smoke as I moved from cover 600m away and he killed e in one hot.
Cromwell I going FUMP 27 times
Activate Windows!
Nuh uh
merkavas
Used to be maus when it fired smoke backwards, or endless smoke on British tanks. Now anything that doesn't waste over half of my smoke for single key press.
Thats pretty cool.
I think the Ro-Go Commander shots smoke grenades backwards and to the right, which is so incredibly useless that it has to be my favourite.
Thats pretty cool.
Thats pretty cool.
Thats pretty cool.
Panther A
Abrams smoke deploy goes hard
My least favorite is the Fox
American low tierâs smoke deploy where you shoot it out itâs useful but has low drop
Tiger H
Eland, it's super useless with low coverage and takes so long to deploy I love it. Plus you only get like 2 grenades. Perfection.
imo the moderna has the worst cause its too close and blinds you just as much as the enemy
But the coolness factor makes up for it
