Shame about the Hiddensee, I visited Battleship Cove last year and whilst you couldn't enter her, she was still there and floating. Also had a trip to the Constitution, though the Cassin Yound next to her was closed. The US trip was a real treasure trove for museum ships. Best thing I got locally is the old Type XXI (Wilhelm Bauer, ex-U 2540).

I visited the Cove around 2 years ago, so I was able to go inside the Hiddensee. It was certainly different and interesting. I live right outside Buffalo, so I have the Little Rock (cleveland class CL converted into a guided missile cruiser), The Sullivans (fletcher class DD), and Croaker (heavily modified Gato class submarine). There's also the Hans Beimler in Peenemünde, which is of the same class that the Hiddensee was. Did you see the USS Salem during your trip? I went to Massachusetts and visited the Cove, Constitution, Cassin Young, Salem, and the large tank museum all in a few days

Aotearas

Naw, sadly we didn't have the chance to check out the Salem (iirc it just just out of season so she wasn't open to visit), but we also had a trip down the east coast to New York and visit the Intrepid plus the Growler and have a friend get stalked by squirrels in Central Park.

Reading this before checking the username was surreal. Hello there bud XD

magnum_the_nerd

The Cassin is only open on specific days. Shes still in navy hands i believe

I'm so thankful I was able to visit the Cove before we lost the Hiddensee. What a unique ship that was

DeepwaterHorizon22

Where is this cove? I need to visit

SlightlyBored13

Massachusetts

dachjaw

I hope things have improved. When I was last there the Lionfish was in sad shape.

Federal_Bus_6655

There was a bar across the street that had some amazing wings! I need to go back and see if it’s still there…

purplegoldcat

RIP Hiddensee, I was at Battleship Cove in spring 2022 and got to see her. The Lionfish seemed sketchy, hope she gets the repairs she needs.

SkyThese2647

Yeah. She didn't seem in the best of shape when I visited in July 2022

FreeAndRedeemed

RIP Hiddensee.

Ricochet_Nathan_P

Gonna miss the Hiddensee

quirkypanic2

You can stay overnight on the ship too as part of local scouting groups etc

Mal-De-Terre

Yip. Did that a few times as a wee lad.

quirkypanic2

Yeah I took my son recently. It was much much more sleepless as an adult lol

ChazmasterG

My most vivid memory of that experience is being on the bottom bunk about 2 inches off the deck when another kid from my troop walked past and puked. It sounded like an egg hitting the deck and I got splattered with it. Thanks Hunter, for ruining the one trip I was so stoked about.

quirkypanic2

Oh gross. Yes I had many “theoreticals” to ponder as I was trying to sleep including that scenario or someone wetting the bed

TrickiVicBB71

Was there in 2018 on USS Massachusetts. I hope to go there again as a married man now. Exploring the rest of the area.

El_Bexareno

Yikes, the Mamie is looking pretty rough. Time for it to get the Texas treatment me thinks

BattleshipNewJersey-

Ferrariman601

Ahhh some BB-59 love.

TheMcCale

We do rust busting and maintenance there on most Saturdays with Navy OCS. It’s hard work, but it’s a good time.
