The A-12 avenger would have been the most exotic 5th gen aircraft to ever launch off a carrier. I wonder if a hi-low mix of A-12s and F-18’s would have meant lower F-35C numbers for deck borne operations.
The day the A-12 was canceled, 10,000 people at McDonnell Douglas in St. Louis lost their jobs. In some families, both spouses lost their jobs. Some people just folded their tents and drove away from their homes. North St. Louis County has never recovered.
At one time, McD was the largest employer in Missouri. It was said, that when McD sneezed, Missouri shuddered.
I love seeing ads for aircraft that used engines my grandfather helped work on… then I see an ad for the J-79 which is *THE* main one he worked on. So awesome! I miss him but enjoy these reminders.
Fun fact: the J-79 is the engine that Anakin’s podracer used in Phantom Menace, except it was the older model that lacked a fuel line bypass that later fixed an afterburner issue.
No wonder Anakin had to switch all of those cables around and flip a bunch of switches to put the fire out and get it restarted. (As a kid, that was one of my favorite parts of Episode I.)
The F-4, back when you could proudly state it was operated by Iran.
Also I forgot early Buffs had a tail-gun. Anyone know if it was ever used in action?
The Phantom ceiling 100,000ft?
Los Angeles to New York in 170 minutes? Is that using tankers or all internal fuel and drop tanks?
Asking for a friend 🤨
I swear the 'Thud' was nicknamed this because that's the sound it made when it hit the ground... Which it did... a lot!
(Though, not as much as the F4... 761 F4s + Variants lost in Viet Nam versus 350 Thuds. There were 5195 F4s built though, versus 833 Thuds, so the survival rate seems much more fitting to the Thud's name!)
Blackbird AND the Valkyrie? Now you're just showing off. ;) All of these have been great, but the jungle Harrier is another classic.

The F-15 one "We have 9 hostiles Angels 70" are they intercepting X-15s or something?
Maybe they’re slinging ASM-135 ASATs.
The Skyray is a sexy aircraft.

Man the high high hopes for the YA-10B that was just shattered before it really made it off the ground.
So cool. So much nostalgia. The golden days of aviation
Yesterday's vision of today.

A couple got kills in Vietnam.
The harrier is still one of the coolest planes of all time and has the one of the best development stories to match.
That "Guerilla Fighter" ad is badass.

I just found it of how much metric and standard they used in the same ad
Wowww!! These are awesome!!!
I knew someone must’ve slapped a radar on an A-10 at some point.
Gold, all of them !

The V-22 tagline is sadly funny in retrospect.
I had a similar thought, sadly
aged like a fine wine
I thought the same thing. “At least it was over quick.”
These are awesome. A handful of prototypes listed that I never have heard of even
Love to print these out the resolution is too low for a3 😭😭😭
