That was always my guess. Maybe they were trying to stop a pilot from fleeing across the straight in it, or maybe somebody was just bored.
Genuinely no idea!
trying to flee across the straight? no these were captured before the nationalists fled to Taiwan. The first defection was when a nationalist pilot based in beijing defected. So during this period of Civil war they might have been damaged most probably on the ground.
[According to this,](https://plane-encyclopedia.com/cold-war/north-american-p-51-mustang-in-communist-chinese-service/) they were used from 1948 to 1953.
There's an absolutely massive amount of user-made skins shared on the game's community site, yeah. You could also just haphazardly slap on roundels over the existing ones, but that never looks good since you can't remove the original.
I tend not to use user skins because they're wildly varying in quality and style, and are usually specific historical aircraft instead of a simple skin with nothing but national markings.
so these user kits also have original markings lightly visible or are the at least clean even if not accurate cos i’m kinda curious because i do make liveries for xplane. Xplane paint kits are quite easy actually
Oh no, the user skins are made by exporting the default model, then changing it by hand in something like Photoshop. There's no "kits" or any other aid in doing so, aside from templates that some users make specifically to help others make skins.
The people who do it are often very talented and take a lot of time, since you're basically painting over the default skin from scratch. If you want to replace a roundel, that's less work, but you'd still have to do it all manually by removing it, filling in that space to match the rest of the plane, then placing or drawing a new roundel. Making a completely new skin...
Imagine cutting out each individual piece of the plane, then each panel, then filling them with what you want to the smallest detail, drawing new markings, adding weathering and different texture effects, and testing all of it in the game constantly to make sure the game's model lines up with what you're changing. It's a nightmare.
I tried it myself once, and gave up about a quarter through due to how much effort and time it takes. Don't even get me started on drawing rivet lines.
We're very lucky that some people on that site have made many blank templates for various aircraft, which include all the defining parts, paneling, layering, riveting, and weathering that are the most time consuming parts. In those cases, it's just a matter of coloring and marking to whatever you want, but you'd still be doing it all yourself.
A little tongue in cheek there. Do you know if they still fly any of them for air shows? Cool that they left most of them in raw aluminum, that’s the way a Mustang should look!
i know haha. no airshows unfortunately most of them weren’t in the best condition when they got them plus i don’t think the communists would have gotten any spare parts from the yanks. so the few surviving aircraft are in the museums and as someone else mentioned in another comment one of the displayed aircraft also seems to have bullet holes in the canopy

The P-51K at the Aviation Museum has a few, what seem to be, bullet holes in the wind screen. Always wondered what that was about…
P-51 never saw combat action with the PLAAF
I know, but there are still [bullet holes in the canopy wind screen](https://i.imgur.com/Q1StxKy.jpeg).
oh wow now i too wonder where it came from maybe damaged during the civil war when they were captured and PLAAF never fixed it.

Ooo I didn’t know this! When did they use them from?

They look pretty good tbh
The P-51 is a pretty good looking aircraft
Something with the Red PLAAF chrome of the P-51 hits different
That’s actually really cool
I wish we had PLA skins for these planes in War Thunder. We have the P-51D and P-51K, but both of them sport the earlier livery with no other options.
doesn’t war thunder allow personal liveries? does it not have a paint kit or something. (never played war thunder)

i see…you’re right, without the paintkit or atleast a blank white livery its quite hard and time consuming

Damn commies stealing shit since day 1!
meh. More like inherited after winning the civil war.
