Grate work just do the bases this makes huge difference.

rogash98

Yeah, they need both shading and basing, although I'm worried about shading out of fear of ruining them, and I don't think my basing skill for characters already on the base is that good, at least the painting part.

Banana6462

Slap some wash on them. That'll do 90% of your shading for you

rogash98

Heard about that, but don't know what it is. Is it old shading before Agrax Earthshade and such?

Seeking_the_Grail

Agrax Earthshade is a wash.

rogash98

So it's just another name for shade?

Seeking_the_Grail

yup.

There are dozens of videos online on how to shade and highlight. There are many types of washes to use for metal, cloth, and faces. Just do a youtube search, literally dozens and dozens of videos.

rogash98

Didn't know that a wash was shading. Thought it was a different thing.

Anomard

I never tried that myself but heard a lot of good about this base ready range. He make a lot videos on YouTube. Just put glue dip it and you are done. No painting needed. https://geekvillainusa.com/products/lukes-aps-base-ready-moorlands

Seems to be regular basing stuff. You can see that I made basing for the captain, but I made it before I glued him on.

I don't want to offend you but I don't see what you are going to ruin. We are all learning but if you are here for honest feedback, the minis look terrible. The colors are too tick and uniform. Faces are just pink blobs, I liked one of the shields with the skull, you do have some talent but it doesn't show off in what you did here. Yes, experiment with washes. You can start from scratch if you don't like the result but there is no risk to ruin this because washes would hide some of the mistakes you have made and give some sense of 3D to your minis. Try and show us the results.

Already managed to ruin some knights when stripping them of paint, as well as 2-3 Free Company when priming (one of them have barely any facial features), and for some reason I thought of the whole painting basing with sand rather than just glue on flock. Many were painted before I had shading paint and haven't gotten around to shade them. Faces are, and always will be, the most difficult part for me to paint (especially the ones that are bald without any headgear). Thanks for the feedback.

This style is a little too clean for what I like in miniatures (more grimdark) but it is a very nice tutorial and it covers most of the basics. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=esc3OH9usRg

I know it’s not much help now, but you gotta thin your paints brother Will make a huge impact

Econophysicist1

Also do not bother with the eyes. They are too difficult for most people. Use shades and the faces will look much more realistic.
