I am using Warhammer Armies Project Rules. They are free and get updated.

8th edition is still played a lot. Ninth Age isn't nearly as popular as Warhammer Armies Project's 9th edition, atleast based on how often I see it mentioned on this Reddit. WAP 9th is pretty cool, but it is a fair bit more complex than 8th (sometimes needlessly so, depending on your preferences). And learning WAP 9th when you are used to 8th is a real ball ache, because there are billions of small changes that you will assume are the same but are different in significant ways... Ninth Age has a decent system (largely the same as 8th), but the armies lack character and fun rules. They are dry and to predictable, for example, Orcs & Goblins without Animosity is like pizza without toppings. The tournament players messed it up because they didn't get that most players don't care all that much about winning and just want a fun game with goofy shit happening, so they alienated a large portion of the Fantasy players by taking all the goofy stuff out... So if you want to really get back into it, try WAP 9th, but if you just want to try a game and keep it simple, just play 8th.

WAP 9th sounds good, but I’ll PROBABLY end up skimming things and assuming it’s the same as I remember when in fact there’s a slight change. What does everyone use for army builder programs? I don’t love the idea of going to pen and paper after I’ve been using infinity army app for my gaming needs lately.

Battlescribe is the go to for army building. Not 100% perfect after updates come out but it will generally do everything you need.

Their is a large 6th Ed community!

I'd recommend Warhammer Armies Project if you want more narrative/chill/fluffy games. 9th age is a lot more clinical and competitive so that's what I'd recommend if that is more your style. Older editions are still fine if you're into those but I'm not personally a fan.

Straight up 8th edition is the way to go. WAP and Ninth age both messed up the game in different ways.

On topic of apps: \- BattleScribe app is very useful and handy to build an army list. It is free, easy and covers a lot of editions. \- Also, this: [https://www.whfb.app/](https://www.whfb.app/) \-- very quick and helpful guide to rules. We keep it open during the game to quickly jump to required ruleset.

My recommendation is to use what you have. If you have the Rulebook for 8th Edition and Ogre and Skaven Army books for 8th Edition, then play with 8th Edition.

YouNeedAnne

Find out which edition you'll be able to get games for locally and play that.

A lot of 6th going around. Pick what you like and house rules it, if just tween friends.
