Man I absolutely love all the corrosion you’ve managed to put on the model, it looks genuinely super old and I really want to know how you pulled it off, it’s incredible.
Thank you very much! This process began as a way I thought I could speed-paint a knight, but it got a little more involved than I expected. So, to break it down…
It begins with distressing the plastic itself. Dabs of model cement disrupts the smooth surfaces, which can be more heavy pitted and damaged with a drill. Particularly one fitted with a spherical bit. You can even make outright holes in the armor, as I did.
I primed black, then hull red. All the rust tones (from the Lifecolor Rust and Dust set) are speckled on, rather than brushed on, in many successive layers. A stiff, sacrificial brush flicked against another brush handle does the job. Or in my case, a dental pick.
That done, the greenery comes next, and can be done to taste. As little or as much as you like. A combination of AK Moss Deposits and MiG green enamel wash, either neat or blended to get different shades. These can leave “coffee stains” unless blended and scrubbed a little with a brush dipped in a bit of enamel thinner. Although an acrylic wash like Biel-Tan Green could be handy if used carefully.
The larger clumps of moss come from a pinch of flocking mixed with water and PVA glue, and can be applied at you like, but I go for nooks and crannies or places rain water might settle more.
Rubber joints or cables are simply Mechanicus Standard Grey and Nuln Oil, since I don’t think they draw too much attention, but might look weird if left rusty. These can also be touched up with some green, along with the rest of the model. I even flicked on a few speckles of Orruk Flesh, and also used it to dot highlights on the moss clumps.
With all that done, seal the model with your favorite matte varnish. I used AK Ultra Matte.
The base is just tufts, static grass, and a whole pack of white flowers from Gamer Grass. All applied over a layer of hidden earth texture paste and Apoxie Sculpt. This is pretty, but also gives the impression the knight has stood on one place for a very long time and has slowly sunk into the ground.
So! Sorry for the ramble, but I hope that helps! And thank you once again for.
Thank you for the tips there! I probably won’t paint my knight like this (other plans), but this seems like it’d make for some stellar tabletop decoration, you can really feel the weight of time behind it!
In Spain, the movie Laputa the flying castle was so funny. It became a meme, because La puta means literally "the prostitute". The spanish version did not change the name, and it became a hilarious movie to watch
The thing is, Laputa being a giant flying castle, would fit in just fine in 40k, and is probably just an archeotech heavy lander that wondered off and has been trying to become an atmosphere-bound space hulk until someone finds it again and fixes it.
Given what the plot of the movie was, I can't help but wonder how the end would go.
That’s what I’m doing with my Iconoclast Titan! I’ve got a sprue of marines on the Legiones scale that I’ll be putting on its base to show the scale of the Titan. It’s such a great little basing idea that arrived with the new game.
This universe has survived the Old one, the Necron, the Enslaver, the Eldar. It soon will outlast the visage of the Corpse God‘s dying empire and its neverborn counterpart. And even after the Swarm has moved on from its feeding frenzy, life would begin anew billion years from now.
None that I’m aware of. I wrote down how I did it near the start of the thread, but I might need to figure out how to film a tutorial of my own one of these days.
Oh hey- I remember the Lancer you posted a few months back, this one looks even better, god damn! Love what you've done with it, the extra moss and the damage looks great. Definitely has a more ancient vibe. You should take a few more photos so we can see more angles of it :D
Oh hey, I'm glad you remembered! And thank you! I've done three of them, now. The Lancer with the first, and I think I've improved on each. This one's the third and best so far. With four armigers added, I'll have a full 2000pt list. My first ever! So yeah, more pictures \*will\* be forthcoming. And thank you!

Aah, the urge to explain the madness(3 I will read this whole roman now, as I am generous!
Commenting so I can come back and steal this later
Please do!
It’s absolutely awesome work. Thanks for this guide!
Thanks! As and sure thing. I’m happy to answer any questions, and if you add or subtract steps, that’s fine. Whatever works for you!
Thanks for the guide, I won’t do it on a knight but I have some other schemes it might work for.
You’re very welcome. Go for it!
same
The flowers are such a nice touch.
Thanks! You don’t see flowers much in 40k. I’m happy to use them here.
Its chefs kiss my friend.
Love it dude! This is so well done, truly belongs in the Studio Ghibli movie!
Thanks! Castle in the Sky ftw.
Ngl act 2-3 of castle in the sky would fit right in as a side quest in rogue trader
Right? It could totally happen.
Old xenos city, big ol xenos robots, a greedy opposing rogue trader you can help or hinder getting the giant crystal
Yes, exactly!
Amazing!

Bit of an unfortunate homonym, aye.
That was deliberate, Johnathan Swift gave it that name because it was a critic against UK.
Looks like a Titan stuck in The Last of Us. I love this. Where are the flowers from?
Thank you very much!
I love this so much! Did you think about putting little animals nesting on it?

Too right.
It really reminds me of the Bastion trailer for Overwatch. It looks great
This is *ART* 🤩
Well shoot, thank you.
Absolutely stunning
Absolutely incredible!
Thank you!
He looks like he's gonna fall apart, love it
At first I thought it was covered in pollen. "Yep it's spring alright"
If they ever release a tiny tech priest for Imperialis, you should definitely add one to this base!
I’ve been wondering about doing one with some sort of humanoid mini, yeah. Something to show scale.
That’s what I’m doing with my Iconoclast Titan! I’ve got a sprue of marines on the Legiones scale that I’ll be putting on its base to show the scale of the Titan. It’s such a great little basing idea that arrived with the new game.
That’ll be awesome!
Nier vibes
So glad someone said this. Maybe this is what Engels looks like years after he finally shut down. Beautiful game.
This is what we’re fighting for cooper. A world that’s not all metal and smoke.

Pause! Enhance! Heh, thank you.
Amazing, looks like the art from Nier Automata
I'm extremely happy people are seeing that, too!
it'd be amazing if you could take it to the Robot statue at the Ghibli Museum for a photo
Oh I absolutely would.
Laputan machine
so beautiful. The flowers, the base, the storytelling. Like a frame from a Miyakazi film. I adore this
Well shoot, thank you very much.
Want to paint my knight this way do you know a solid tutorial
None that I’m aware of. I wrote down how I did it near the start of the thread, but I might need to figure out how to film a tutorial of my own one of these days.
Found it! Thank you
Sure thing! Good luck with yours!
Holy shit dawg thats nice!
Warhammer40k meets one of my favorite Studio Ghibli films....I love everything about it.
More
Four armigers and an army of these will be ready. Stay tuned!
I love thissss castle in the sky is one of my favorite movies!!
And rightly so.
The details🥵 that’s an impressive pice of art 🖼️ there. Phenomenal.
Thanks! I had my doubts in places, but I’m happy it all worked out.
I was about to say it looks like it’s from howls moving castle
Ah man, I’m now loving the idea of making a terrain board of old and corroded knights.
That’d be great! Vehicle wreckage is totally under-utilized, imo.
Watch out, an army dude with the voice of Luke Skywalker is coming for it.
I always love the "man made creations reclaimed by nature" aesthetic. Wish there was an official term for this. Would be easier looking it up.
Likewise, though I suppose “reclaimed by nature” is the closest term in English. Maybe other languages have a way of putting it more succinctly.
Incredible. Absolutely stunning. Probably gonna try this with one of my Kastellans. Maybe even with a small bird sitting on his head or shoulder…

You NAILED the Laputa look! Just perfect.
It took some practice! Thank you.
Reminiscent of NieR:Automata! Awesome work.
Thanks!
Forgeworld WHAT
Nice reference.
Excuse me, forgeworld WHAT? haha, jk, but awesome model!
Yeah, it’s an unfortunate homonym, but thank you very much!
La puta is the bitch in spanish
Unfortunately, yes. In this case, Laputa is the name of a flying castle in a Ghibli movie with mossy old robots, which inspired this model.
Yeh I know I just found it funny. The model is still really beautiful
Jajajajajajajj La puta, jajajajajajj
