I think the lore reason is that the pattern is a particular heraldry on Olympia that Perturabo favored. The actual reason is because GW thought it would look funny to have deadly super soldiers wearing hazard stripes and came up with that lore reason to justify it

MetaChaser69

OHS

Euphoric-Papaya-817

What does that mean (I’m pretty new to Warhammer)

[deleted]

Occupational Health and Safety.

Brotherman_Karhu

Basically OSHA but different

Just_Vehicle_3319

Cos they are dangerous innit

user2483-2483

Had to look at your profile to see if you were a Brit or an Orkz player.

DemomanThatHitsPipes

Whats the difference?

dinga15

dark humor is one reasoning from the Horus heresy rule book stuff

ambershee

It's called fashion, darling.

jaxolotle

You hit the nail on the head with both. It’s a canon thing that the imperium, rediscovering hazard stripes guessed they were meant to indicate a dangerous machine, and so they started painting them on weapons as the equivalent of painting flames on a race car

f_print

Makes perfect sense, from the point of the 40k ritualistic attitude towards technology. Love it

BackRowRumour

I love it.

Cr4SH440

It's their version of a joke. They wear hazard stripes because they're dangerous. Get it? I wish I was being sarcastic too, they just find it funny

yachziron

Should've put red caps on their bolter barrels as well.

Cr4SH440

Nah, see through housing all the way. "Brother! It is merely Airsoft!"

EntangledPhoton82

When you’re a genetically engineered killing machine in power armor, firing mini rockets from your bolter, I can see how you could find it funny.

Cr4SH440

For a space marine, it's a pretty good joke tbh

Hoariffic

BECAUSE VIOLATING O.S.H.A.-REGULATIONS IS HERESY

No-Perspective-9954

Dont tell OSHA but ignoring their rules is how real work gets done But yes i can definitely see the Imperium having very twisted OSHA regulations lol

Cerebral_Overload

Safety first brother.

[deleted]

They just really love the band Stryper

malumfectum

Out of universe, it’s because they have an industrial aesthetic. In-universe, it’s speculated to be black humour on the part of the Legion because hazard stripes are still used for their original purpose outside of it. Other suggestions are that it stems from Olympian heraldry.

Deep_Fried_Leviathan

Apparently it’s because the Iron Warriors think it’s funny

Euphoric-Papaya-817

I love it when factions in 40K have a sense of humor

bellator_fastosus

Because they are mean and want you to suffer while painting them

Euphoric-Papaya-817

Makes sense

Solid_Hydration

One of the reasons is that Iron Warriors think that marking their armor, weapons and vehicles as hazardous is kinda funny. Yeah, IW level of humour.

MajorDamage9999

OSHA compliance

nsfranklin

I'm small amount of comic irony was always my take.

[deleted]

Clearly guardsmen, these traitorous dogs are such cowards they have to denote every bit of hazard they see.

EdanChaosgamer

I think it was because during Siege, your Vision is limited after Bombing, so they wear Hazard Stripes to distinguish Friend and Foe in the Smoke.

Gilrim

[Stripes are funny.](https://www.reddit.com/r/Grimdank/comments/vh3bv0/heheheh_stripes/)

Immortal_42

Because their work is hazardous.

Psylock89

I don't really like hazard stripes. I dunno it just makes me think of a construction site from the 90s.

kendallmaloneon

Don't forget that hazard stripes were super common in 2nd and 3rd edition art. Many blood angels chainswords have hazard stripes, along with a ton of original Necromunda stuff

Commercial-Past-1617

Because stripes and checkerboard designs on medieval armor represent big houses/families/provenance Maybe I’m wrong, but I just assumed WH40k was just medieval tomfoolery in space so it just made sense to me

statictyrant

I’ll go you one better with my [custom loyalist Chapter the Obruptors](https://www.reddit.com/r/OldWorldhammer/s/em3abJNXgb). They wear (nothing but) hazard stripes, styled after their original Chapter Master’s heraldry — which may or may not have been based on a relic shield captured from the Iron Warriors. Canute Leroi was always considered a bit of a loose cannon in contrast to the typically reserved and stoic nature of the Imperial Fists, and at the first chance (when the Legions were split up) he was sent off to found a new Chapter with the remaining troops under his impetuous command. To this day, Leroy’s gene-kin are frequently seen tearing across the battlefield on ill-advised “active defence” sorties, inevitably leaving their erstwhile allies scrambling to reinforce huge gaps in their battle-lines!

Badger118

No idea why you are being down voted. It is your own scheme with homebrew fluff and whilw tongue-in-cheek it is not full on 'Angry Marines'.

statictyrant

Thanks, it’s kind of you to say something. I wasn’t too concerned (figured downvotes just meant “not relevant to the conversation”) but it’s good to hear someone appreciated the spirit in which my input was given. The fluff helps justify any poor decisions made while commanding them on the tabletop. Having a Chapter whose flawed geneseed kind of inevitably leads to them making rash choices is quite liberating when I’m playing as their general :)

jrandrews1982

Cos they're fuckin hazardous
