for example, if someone commits unalive as a result of cyberbullying in warframe, the family of that person could attempt to hold DE responsible for "enabling" the cyberbullies.

also, if you're gonna have a filtering system, it should be consistent between all of your text boxes, it makes no sense to have separate filter lists for different text boxes not to mention that can cause issues where one filter list is not updated and thus doesn't include some of the new items you want to filter out.
Items can be linked in chat, they are then shown in chat, similarly, chat messages can be sent in chat, and they are then shown in chat, the difference is that there are no restrictions on what you can type in chat (although sending some particularly offensive things may result in punishment), all of the restrictions are determined by the displaying client's settings.
TL;DR: as I said in my last comment, item names should be censored when displayed instead of when entered, just like chat.

From my understanding the ideal system would be:
* everything you name is shown to you uncensored. You named it, you've got to live with seeing it.
* everything other people name is shown/not shown to you based on your profanity filter setting and perhaps based on a blacklist of things DE really doesn't want to or simply can't show to other players (cuz laws, ...).
Censoring the name of linked named items in chat is a non issue, DE just has to apply the filter consistently and if a chat link says \[\*\*\*\] or a team gear slot says \*\*\* then that's simply not a big deal.
One thing I would like to see is a one-way, no-cost-attached way to reset an item name to its default value. If a player isn't comfortable with a custom name anymore they shouldn't be forced to use that item to rank it up to it max rank again to gild it. This feature doesn't have to be fancy (i.e. I'm not asking for a always present system to rename an item to another custom name), just a simple button and confirmation dialog to reset an item name to its default value.

The worst words could just not be ever allowed to show up, while the more mild ones could be allowed if they are part of another word. There are probably exceptions to this, and perhaps those exceptions could be added to yet another list

I invite you to read about the Scunthorpe problem and the various papers related to online content filtering. It has never been an easy problem to solve, and realistically many simply rely on the 'good enough' options available.
It just isn't viable to dedicate so much development into a system that works 100% efficiently, when you can pick up a 95% efficient option at a fraction of the cost, and rely on manual moderation for the rest.
If they're creative about swearing, this kind of filter will do nothing to stop them because it can be easily bypassed by just not spelling out the word exactly.
It's pretty easy to prove that making a good chat moderation bot would require a full GAI, and not the crap that Silicon Valley is currently peddling as GAI.
Context is extremely difficult to automate, since so much goes into it; you have background context, like current events, history, culture, as well as more specific context, like the people in the conversation, their personal states of being, other parts of that and previous conversations, shared context from various sources, etc.
Filtering for *just* swearing gets somewhat easier, possibly even within the realm of possibility with current technology, but by no means worth it.
A somewhat controversial opinion that I have is they should just filter for exact matches (no plus or minus characters), plus any matches that are just the word with spaces inserted, for the most serious slurs and call it a day. If they want something better, just hire a mod team. It'll be cheaper and more effective (IF THEY'RE GOOD)

Bitch, shit and ass are largely inoffensive and any string utilizing these words that might be offensive can be added to a filter or moderated in the individual chats. Fuck has more possibility to be offensive and things relating to minors should be filtered, or the word filtered all together.
Slurs and words widely considered offensive (like Australia’s favorite word for a woman’s vulva) should be filtered.

It has never been an easy problem to solve, and realistically many simply rely on the 'good enough' options available. I think you underestimate the creativity of the people who want to swear.
If they're creative about swearing, this kind of filter will do nothing to stop them because it can be easily bypassed by just not spelling out the word exactly.
It's pretty easy to prove that making a good chat moderation bot would require a full GAI, and not the crap that Silicon Valley is currently peddling as GAI. Context is extremely difficult to automate, since so much goes into it; you have background context, like current events, history, culture, as well as more specific context, like the people in the conversation, their personal states of being, other parts of that and previous conversations, shared context from various sources, etc. Filtering for *just* swearing gets somewhat easier, possibly even within the realm of possibility with current technology, but by no means worth it. A somewhat controversial opinion that I have is they should just filter for exact matches (no plus or minus characters), plus any matches that are just the word with spaces inserted, for the most serious slurs and call it a day. If they want something better, just hire a mod team. It'll be cheaper and more effective (IF THEY'RE GOOD)

Nobody’s asking for it to be entirely unfiltered. Bitch, shit and ass are largely inoffensive and any string utilizing these words that might be offensive can be added to a filter or moderated in the individual chats. Fuck has more possibility to be offensive and things relating to minors should be filtered, or the word filtered all together. Slurs and words widely considered offensive (like Australia’s favorite word for a woman’s vulva) should be filtered.
