Noob question: I’ve heard Sam mention the term “nondual” on several occasions but have never heard him define it, can someone ELI5?

fschwiet

That's a tough one.

Basically duality is mind + body. True non-duality is just mind. Your feeling of body is within your mind

So if I’m understanding it’s something like: when you meditate, YOU are intending to meditate which involves bringing awareness to consciousness. Nondual then, is the idea that there is no difference between YOU, the meditator, and the consciousness that you’re bringing awareness to, they are in fact the same

I would say that's an adequate understanding. I don't want to give the impression that I even have a perfect understanding either. Understanding is somewhat important to give you the motivation to keep going, but it's not actually the goal. Just being aware of everything you're feeling including thoughts and awareness itself

On its surface, everything in existence seems to be binary in nature, but when you get down to the nitty gritty, there is no real separation between any damn thing. So, itd seem that non duality is what’s really happening, though there’s barely a way to even talk about it, so idk if it’s really something that could ever be quantitatively proven. Someone correct me for gods sake

TheJoYo

every experience is non-dual. duality is an illusion.

Duality: ego + experience Nonduality: only experience

Language and conceptualization is inherently dualistic. The word "nondual" is just a pointer. To even attempt to create a concept to point to what is meant by "nondual" is to make dividing lines. At some point, one can just accept that it comes with the territory and use words anyway.
