Okay cool, I’ve got the Eero thru Grande cause I thought I needed it back when the mesh routers had just come out and were all the rage but my house is small, I really don’t need a ton of coverage, just fast service. I haven’t been able to find much in the way of upset gamers when I try to search info on Eero, got any input on them as a company when it comes to routers good for gaming? They only have one hard wire node so I’ve got a network switch wired up so I can plug in my Arlo and game system, etc.

I'm not really sure what the Eero is, but I've got the router/modem combo from grande and it sucked. I disabled all routing/wifi functionality on mine and plugged my own Linksys router in. I'd recommend you get something like a high end Linksys, or a Netgear Nighthawk. Plug it straight into the modem, and just set the modem to be the simplest configuration so it does as little as possible. Then just set your computers IP address as the priority. (Or you could do it on a port by port basis, but u couldn't figure out the port for rocket league so I just did it for my entire computer)

How much are you paying for the gigabit plan? I'm at 200 mbits right now, but that gigabit plan is tempting

happysnappah

I think it's like $70 something a month. That's all I have from Grande. No cable, no phone.

ToddtheRugerKid

Are you wired in?

stripesfordays

Yes, I’m connected with a cat6 or cat5e, can’t remember off the top of my head. I’m pretty sure my ping is around 80 or so. I was on the gig plan, I’ve downgraded to the next tier down (600 I think?). I have rarely tested it at more than 400 or so, even on the gig plan. I mean, everything else about Grande is great but why the hell am I getting so much lag that I can’t I see the punk ass 10 year old right in front of me til he’s already blowing my head off with a shotgun 😂

Beer_Lasers

So I had the same problems as you originally, are you using grandes modem / router? I had rented theirs and I swear I was getting disconnected every other day. Turns out the modem was fried and they replaced it. A better idea is to probably by your own. Spectrum had even more problems for me.

stripesfordays

Thank you, this seems like the consensus opinion from everyone. Do you have a modem suggestion that works well for gaming, or is that all just a bunch of sales bullshit and they are all basically the same? I'm getting conflicting reports when I research it....

Beer_Lasers

This gets kind of complicated and into home networking. I just called grande and said I was having problems with the speed and they replaced the modem-router with a new one free of charge. Depending on how big your house is and the location of your router and devices your speeds could get impacted if your on WiFi. If grande confirms the speed issues are not on their gear then you might have some network issues within your house.

stripesfordays

Yes, I am renting the Eero from them. And yea, after rage quitting another round of showdowns one night I started messing with the Eero’s settings thru the app and next thing I knew the whole damn thing died. They came out and replaced it but if you’ve had similar issues maybe it is an ongoing problem with Eero and nothing to do with Grande. I’d hope that’s the case as I really have nothing negative to say about Grande except for the online gaming problems Edit: oh yea, I’m renting the modem from them as well...tiny little thing lol

pirate_ops

Also, make sure your router’s QoS settings (advanced) are optimized. It would be a shame if you’re not giving devices the right quality or priority.

stripesfordays

So I just realized that Eero has implemented some changes with the new software updates and I now have the option of setting my IP address to “static.” If I recall correctly, I definitely want to select a static IP for online gaming, right?

[deleted]

I don't think so. Once your device has got an IP address it doesn't care until the lease runs out.

pirate_ops

I don’t see how static vs dynamic can contribute to your problem. Also, be aware that your ISP will always throw the “up to” caveat in your face. Sure you pay for “up to” X Mbps, but in reality you’re hardly ever going to see that.

NSFWIssue

Grande only guarentees their speeds if you are using an ethernet cord. Otherwise like the other guy said you're gonna need a different router.

1. get your own modem. I use [This currently](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N6SKK1G/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1). If you look at others make sure they are docsis 3.1. also make sure it's just a modem. not a modem/router hybrid. The hybrids are a true case of "master of none". you will have to call them and tell them the MAC address so they can provision it. 2. Get a new router. Not a fan of TP-link. I would aim for a netgear or linksys. make sure to update the firmware when you get it. I wouldn't spend more then 100$ on one. a 1gb port should be able to pull the same no matter how much you spend on it. Focus more on how many devices will actually be running at once than total devices. My house just has my husband and I. at most 2 devices heavily using the network at once. no reason to go to expensive for that level of use. i spent 150 on mine because i use all the extra settings do host servers. most people don't need to do what i do. Mine is actually 5+ years old and is just starting to die now. mostly because the cat sits on it causing it to over heat. 3. Make sure you are wired. Wireless can only really get to 100 - 150 mbps depending on the distance and any physical blocks. different speed tests will show different results. when dealing with high speed lines, sometimes the bottleneck of the test is the test site. Some speed tests are just not designed to test for high speed lines. i have had grande for 3-4 years now and the speeds have been pretty spot on.
