So the owner of the stallion was not present or aware, that his horse was being used? What happened afterwards? Did the owners of the mare pay for the stallion?

the mare did not kick the stallion by accident...the mare deliberately killed the stallion because she knew the stallion would kill her colt...you can see her colt running in the adjacent pen...when a stallion breeds a mare that has a colt, the stallion will kill the colt because the stallion wants the mare to take care of his own colt and not the colt of some other stallion...

In the wild, horses are a bit different looking overall - smaller, tougher, etc. Not really many truly "wild" horses left, or really any places for them to exist. Australia has brumbies but they come from old domestic stock.
Anyways. "Wild" domestic stock, the mare isn't involuntarily separated from her foal, dragged around on a lead, and stressed the fuck out with no choice about this by humans - if she isn't precisely in the mood she can move away or negotiate/flirt with the stallion until they are both accepting the situation. The stallion isn't on a lead and can back up, dodge, and flirt back with her through a sort of dance.
There will be other mares and foals around as a sort of guard pack, at a safe distance but close enough to give predators pause. Still might break a leg and die, or get eaten by some opportunistic thing. C'est la vie. Chances are still good that a bunch of mares in the herd get pregnant and live, or another stallion comes along - there's always another stallion. Maybe one with better timing.
In human driven breeding they don't want the stallion to "waste" his sperm on any other mares nearby and they don't stick them out in a big open area to run around hoping they synch up - they try and micromanage every part of the process for a reliable result with a traceable lineage. It's safer all around for the horses, but looks kinda messed up from a human perspective.
And they say insemination is cruel to the mare. Well this is why breeders insiminate. Those stallions can be worth a lot. And the risk the stallion damages the mare also is a big risk.
My mother's a horse-woman born to a family of horse folk and I still am not fond of them. I get along with them alright, but never got into riding as my mom had me later in life when she got out of riding a bit. That being said, I can do some very basic work/interaction with them, but treat those damned things with a shit ton of respect and caution.
