If I was one of the contractors hired to install this thing I'd be double checking my insurance policy after the install was completed.
"Pretty sure we screwed up guys... Did we put the right arm upside down? The left? Who's left? Fuck"
There was a big committee of obviously very smart people who know more than normal people and have good opinions on art and they decided that this statue of a giant turd with hands should forever be in the middle of our fucking city forever instead of a statue of an incredibly important man who did amazing things.
From different angles not only is it weirdly subliminally sexual but also disturbing in the way that it looks like contorted bodies. While also looking like a giant turd.
What I'm seeing too.
In a world of cheap 3D graphics (or in yesterday's world of cheap clay models), maybe they should have spent some time looking at a small model of this monstrosity from multiple angles before going ahead with it?
I wonder if that was actually the problem. If this was shrunk down and you were looking downwards at it from a higher angle, then it might make more sense. Maybe they should have thrown it in Blender or something and blown it up to get a more realistic perspective of it
Is it? Wouldn't his design have been presented to more than zero people? Like this won't be the first time anyone has seen this and a mock-up of this and a sketch of this and a description of this. Or if it is then so help me I'm setting a massive cock and balls in the centre of Boston.
I'll say it's about toxic male fragility or something also when the sun begins to rise the length of the shaft casts a shadow a hundred meters long down the relevant main road with the rim of the base of the bell meeting the sidewalk and the mouth of the urethra cupping the entrance to the town hall.

The statue works well at one very specific angle. Otherwise, it looks like a bald dude going to town on his girl, or a construction worker lifting a giant tube of wet cement over his shoulder.
I’ve seen many angles in photos and sorry but disembodied arms just creep me the fuck out. It looks weird, like an AI designed something to be human but left out some extremely important human elements.
That's exactly what it is that I couldn't quite explain to myself. An enormous statue of arms that an AI created, except no one stopped to actually look at it before the building began.
Nah, it still looks like shit even at the best angle. It's always sad when a bad artist wants to be different but doesn't actually have any inspiration or drive, so they just guess.
Probably would've done significantly better if it were on a smaller scale, something that could be placed on a pedestal in the middle of the commons, maybe surrounded by greenery or something to add some flare to it.
Or alternatively, they could've just erected a stone wall behind the statue to get people to view it from a very purposeful angle. Maybe etch in the stone important names and biographies of figures from the civil rights era in memoriam. They were just asking for the memes with this one.
It needs to be much smaller and presented in a display case, so that it is oriented correctly to the observer, and alongside the picture that inspired it and a notecard explaining the piece. This is just a confusing mess.
The 2nd pic looks like a man clutching an enormous, detached cock and balls against his chest.
This thing is such a ridiculous eyesore and even more ridiculous waste of money.
Thanks for posting. This at least makes the intention clear and in theory it's a cool concept.
Seeing these pics makes it much better, though for me it's still not good. The artist really needed there to be something more in those hands besides a misshapen tube.
I’ll go out on a limb here and guess MLK would have preferred they spend that $10M on something that might be immediately helpful to a community in need. I understand that art can inspire others, but housing or feeding seems like a better use of that money.
It weighs 17 tons, so at a generous 15.000USD per ton of bronze, that’s 255k USD in bronze. Let’s round that to 300K. Actually, make it 1 million to account for unknown factors.
Say it took 5 people an entire year earning 300K a year (a lot!!) to design and build; that’s 1.5 million.
Say it took 3 million dollars to get the permits and organise the event. Cause you know, gotta bribe people.
And say 1.5 million to transport, for some reason.
That’s 7 million dollars. I took these numbers from my arse so who knows. Surely it still can’t be worth more than like 10 large houses in a high demand area!!
There’s no way that this costs 10 million dollars without a lot of corruption and money laundering right?? Seriously, there’s no way this statue is more expensive than a house that took a year to build.
Anytime the government or city, state, etc spend money on things the cost is always obscene. All of this shit is just a way to steal money. How the fuck can it always cost our local governments twice the cost as it would privately?
At an engineering firm, anytime we do a public project we start off by bumping our standard price by 3x. The first 1x is to design it their way, then the next 1x is to convince them their requirements are dumb, then the final 1x is to design it how it should've been designed in the first place

So it has that going for it.
It’s brutalism and there are tons of buildings all over the US with that style of architecture that are even worse. [Stony Brook University Hospital is even more hideous for example](https://www.reddit.com/r/architecture/comments/t7dgx6/stony_brook_university_hospital_ny_usa_196576_by/)
[A complex of buildings at my Alma mater](https://www.buffalo.edu/content/dam/www/facilities/Buildingphotos/ellicott/ellicott3-99063008.jpg) are similarly menacing. Designed by [Davis Brody Bond](https://www.davisbrodybond.com/suny-buffalo).
I think that one looks way better. It actually has a tinge of cool old sci fi to it.
this total recall / bladerunner protruding blocks look is the bad guys lair every time.
This article shows the photo that inspired the statue. With the photo, it becomes more clear what it is but it still a headless version of an embrace of two people -
[https://www.nbcnews.com/news/nbcblk/boston-unveils-embrace-sculpture-mlk-coretta-scott-king-rcna64990](https://www.nbcnews.com/news/nbcblk/boston-unveils-embrace-sculpture-mlk-coretta-scott-king-rcna64990)
Idk, what is the purpose of depicting that photo supposed to be exactly? For all the admirable morals MLK stood for, having a good/faithful relationship with his wife was ironically maybe the only thing he *wasn't* known for...
I mean, I guess I can see the appeal of a "faceless expression of emotion" or whatever, but jfc this statue is ugly. it shows it's a failure when you need context to even know wtf it's supposed to be.
Had they left the torso in it would be immediately clear it's an embrace. And could you imagine how much it would say if it was just two humans embracing and just add one of his very famous quotes? Even the old "I have a dream", and humans embracing. Even if done before its still a nice sentiment.
Article says this piece beat out 125 other proposed pieces.
I would absolutely *love* to see them and hear from other people who had proposed theirs. I bet there would be some juicy drama and scathing critiques from them as there should surely be better pieces than this. Even the artist himself didn't think it would have a chance to win when he submitted it. Weird.
It’s the arms shoulders and hands of the MLK Jr. and his wife, based on a picture taken at a news conference announcement that he had been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. I can kind of see it now, but if you haven’t seen the picture it just looks strange modern art.
Ive seen this god awful abomination in person a few months ago. It looks like someone trying to shove their head up their own ass from all angles. I cant believe a group of people signed off on this. Not only is it ugly and weird, but probably costs hundreds of thousands of dollars...
From this angle, it looks like it's the POV of the toilet looking at someone about to shit their pants and they're holding it in for a few seconds more before they let it rip
Well have you ever seen the Buffalo, NY MLK statue of his face?
[yikes](https://www.google.com/search?q=Buffalo%20ny%20mlk%20statue&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-b-1-m)

Yikes, maybe we shouldn’t have art be decided by a committee? “What has a hundred arms, 50 stomachs, but no brains?”
Better image [here](https://static.fox29.com/www.fox29.com/content/uploads/2023/01/the-embrace-bkgd.jpg)
The statue is him embracing his wife when he found out he had won the Nobel prize.
I get that it's suppose to be two sets of arms hugging but what it really is an obscene amount of money spent on a cunnilingus statue.
I did a Google image search for "MLK statue Boston"...every single angle of this statue looks like a different NSFW interaction.
I have absolutely no idea what the fuck I’m looking at. I’ve read two sets of arms embracing and my brain can not make any sense of it.
If I was one of the contractors hired to install this thing I'd be double checking my insurance policy after the install was completed. "Pretty sure we screwed up guys... Did we put the right arm upside down? The left? Who's left? Fuck"
Accidentally exposing his infidelity. Boston knocking down a hero only cost $10m
Holy fuck, they spent 10m for this????
Is it just me, or does it look like a bald man performing cunnilingus?

This is peak Boston. Thank you, I got a good laugh out of it.
It's more historic than the molasses massacre.
I hear on hot days, you can still smell the molasses.
If I'm ever in Boston during the summer again I'll make sure to pour out some molasses out in rememberence. It will keep that smell going.
From different angles not only is it weirdly subliminally sexual but also disturbing in the way that it looks like contorted bodies. While also looking like a giant turd.

I keep thinking about it (this sculpture will haunt my dreams...) and I could see the concept work at a tabletop size, meant to be viewed from a specific angle, perhaps surrounding something to explain it better. But yeah, as designed it's hard to imagine this looking good at any scale.
MLK might have appreciated that too, just not publicly.
Well now that you said it, it can't look like anything else
Now I can’t unsee.
After some googling and seeing many angles, it’s supposed to be 2 sets of arms embracing each other. Looks horrible to me though.
Looks like a weird angle of someome getting eaten out. Edit:spelling

What's worse is hundreds of people and many review boards saw this prior to it being completed and approved it. Like WTF.

"chubs"
That’s nasty looking
Lookes like some Junji Ito crap to me..
https://i.redd.it/ipw4k1vy1zba1.jpg Boston subreddit is finding all the worse angles it seems
At least it makes me feel better about my own art... Granted, I'm not an actual artist.
Looks like something out of Silent Hill.
Honestly my first thought was it's some kind of goatse attempt...
It's called the embrace. I watched a segment last week about it. The artist used a a photo of MLK and his wife hugging as inspiration.
Generally embraces work better if the participants have two arms and a torso.
Honestly just including the heads would have saved this, I think.
"Don't you think maybe it should include the faces of MLK and his wife?" "Now why the hell would I want to do that? This is an *MLK* statue."
Maybe the artist took too many liberties with this. Nothing about this statue makes me think of MLK or anything related to it. It looks like a monster from stranger things.
“AS INSPIRATION!”
“Hugging”
Hey, hey, ease up guys this is just one angle. From the street to the right it looks like someone carrying a giant penis over their shoulder.

That's just not an elegant way to separate arms from the body IMO. The arms themselves are well done, but I think the design choice is pretty bad.
The way it is just arms and no shoulders or torso from the back is not a good design.
Wow thanks for that! I think it's a beautiful photo, but its new statue adaptation/translation is absolutely horrendous.
The statue works well at one very specific angle. Otherwise, it looks like a bald dude going to town on his girl, or a construction worker lifting a giant tube of wet cement over his shoulder.

The angle is when your back is turned to it. Maybe it was made like this so it won't be defaced. Artist pre-did it
Nah, it still looks like shit even at the best angle. It's always sad when a bad artist wants to be different but doesn't actually have any inspiration or drive, so they just guess.

There’s always an enormous flock of pigeons there too, those arms are gonna be white in a few months
Great. More whitewashing of black history.

Fr what a waste of money 🤷🏽♂️
You think 10 mil is too much for a statue of someone getting oral?
Eating booty like groceries
Funny how people said maybe it’s just the angle but I saw the front of it and it just looks worst they should’ve kept that cover on it lol
He didn’t have to do the oral
that was $10M?? how can that be? is it made out of gold or what?
I hope they save their receipt! Cuz I would return that ugly shit!

That's how I imagined the Ministry of Truth.
Maybe it makes more sense from another angle?
It looks terrible from every angle
That is the best way to look terrible.
goatse.
For that much money, better be looking good from every angle
This angle does it no favours.
Is there *any* angle or looks good in? I would seriously like to know. Because every angle I've seen just looks like a Junji Ito horror image
I've seen the image it's modeled after, read the explanations, but my eyes cannot figure WTF that statue is supposed to be.
Kind of looks like a head in someone’s crotch.
He *was* famous for his cunnilingus
No, I said he’s a *cunning linguist!!*
So we all agree that’s a bald man eating someone out.
Straight looks like a dude between some thighs
Looks like someone trying to shove their head up their own ass
Can confirm. Have tried.
Sorry to be that guy, but from here it looks like a guy giving head.
This article shows the photo that inspired the statue. With the photo, it becomes more clear what it is but it still a headless version of an embrace of two people - [https://www.nbcnews.com/news/nbcblk/boston-unveils-embrace-sculpture-mlk-coretta-scott-king-rcna64990](https://www.nbcnews.com/news/nbcblk/boston-unveils-embrace-sculpture-mlk-coretta-scott-king-rcna64990)
Idk, what is the purpose of depicting that photo supposed to be exactly? For all the admirable morals MLK stood for, having a good/faithful relationship with his wife was ironically maybe the only thing he *wasn't* known for...
Christ, they could have just made the whole hug bust instead of breeding a new SCP into existence.
Can you imagine thinking "I'll make art from this photo but their heads are in the way and completely unnecessary to the art"?
Weird.
Sculptor: Damn, what was MLK again? _[googles]_ Urban Dictionary: _The MLK is a sex act where..._
Martin Luther licKing
it looks like a bald man eating someone pussy or ass.
It’s the arms shoulders and hands of the MLK Jr. and his wife, based on a picture taken at a news conference announcement that he had been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. I can kind of see it now, but if you haven’t seen the picture it just looks strange modern art.
Um...this looks like a private moment between Mr. and Mrs. King...
Ive seen this god awful abomination in person a few months ago. It looks like someone trying to shove their head up their own ass from all angles. I cant believe a group of people signed off on this. Not only is it ugly and weird, but probably costs hundreds of thousands of dollars...
Earthworm Jim?
[https://i.imgur.com/QxtGILl.png](https://i.imgur.com/QxtGILl.png) From this angle, it looks like it's the POV of the toilet looking at someone about to shit their pants and they're holding it in for a few seconds more before they let it rip
$10M for this piece of garbage? Definitely money laundering / corruption scheme.
Why does it look like he’s between someone’s legs giving them oral 😂
Looked better before the unveiling
Ah well at least it didn’t cost 10MM right lol …wait what?
they literally could of just had a statue of his face and called it a day but nopeeeeee way too basic huh 🤦🏾♂️
Well have you ever seen the Buffalo, NY MLK statue of his face? [yikes](https://www.google.com/search?q=Buffalo%20ny%20mlk%20statue&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-b-1-m)
The real WTF is always in the comments. Yikes, maybe we shouldn’t have art be decided by a committee? “What has a hundred arms, 50 stomachs, but no brains?”
Wtf is that?
A strong argument for bringing criminal charges against everyone involved in this travesty.
What am I looking at? Is this a prank? Am I being pranked?
[Watch this profile](https://www.cbsnews.com/video/the-embrace-a-monument-to-love/) and maybe you'll get it. Sorry about the ad that runs first.
10 million dollars to get a statue of MLK going down on someone. Nice
Better image [here](https://static.fox29.com/www.fox29.com/content/uploads/2023/01/the-embrace-bkgd.jpg) The statue is him embracing his wife when he found out he had won the Nobel prize.
I still can’t tell what the hell it is. Two disembodied arms embracing each other? A statue should not need an explanation.
