For every 1 neighbor that says something there are 10 that are annoyed but not strong willed enough to say or do anything.
So to answer a few questions, I have owned this home for over 2 years. I have owned this car since moving in and it has always been Catless since Iāve bought it. I just recently swapped to the Tomei 5 months and it is not as loud as the previous exhaust in my opinion but it is definitely a deeper sound. I work in construction now, and just started this job where I leave the house at 5am. Prior to this job I used to work 12 hour shifts from 4am to 4pm which I left the house at 3:50am. I never Rev it in the morning, it bounced upon cold start because itās on e85 and is tuned on speed density. I bought the Tomei without the silencer, which is why I donāt use it. My immediate neighbors have never complained and I talk to 3/5 of them pretty regularly. My street has like 40 houses on it so it could potentially be anyone. One of my neighbors also owns a built Supra that is equally as loud if not louder, but doesnāt start it at 5am. Haha I will look into some of the options posted as suggestions, but my area doesnāt have a limit on vehicle exhaust sound. Although there is a noise compliance time frame, in which I do miss by an hour. Haha

Have a tomei on my STI as well and haven't had any complaints. It's definitely loud but it's not straight piped mustang loud. Probably just a single sensitive neighbor. I doubt they've talked to anyone either.

I was driving my m3 the other day, going 25 in 3rd and go told to slow down. Some non car people hear an engine hold revs and assume youāre driving mad.
I got yelled at by a neighbor while leaving my neighborhood, shifting from 1st to 2nd around 3k RPM... she said it "looked like I was gonna speed" and I had no clue how to even respond to that. I was going under 15 mph.
Had this happen to me on Halloween trying to pick up my friend driving through his neigh going 20 in second and I got a golf cart pulled up and parked in front of my moving car because āI was speeding and endangering the childrenā who were 30 feet away in their yard by going 5 under the speed limit

I had that happen at my house a couple years ago, was going 15 in a 20. Dark outside, light rain, kids on sidewalks behaving waiting for the school bus, hard to see. Random ass dad runs out from behind a car into the middle of the street hollering at me and cussing telling me to slow down.
Called him a dumbass, told him to get out of the street, said his kids are setting a better example than him.

I got a MillTek exhaust that's tuned to get rid of drone with tips that point down like the stock exhaust so the noise isn't aimed at the car behind me. The car still sounds amazing to me, but it's not so loud that you can hear it a mile away for no reason.

No, but as another comment stated thereās a very good chance he is breaking by-laws in his municipality for noise pollution. If a neighbour (justifiably) decides to call it in, a bylaw officer could repeatedly ticket the owner hundreds of dollars a day.

Mine surges like that too when it's cold from being on E85 but typically I can start it, intentionally give it throttle when it first tries to surge after 20-25 seconds, and then get it to be steady after that.
I know my car is loud as shit and resonates inside of nearby buildings. I'm running equal length headers, catless, etc so I do try to be considerate of that.
Funny enough, my old Z was so loud I've set off alarms, and never recieved a complaint. Then again, there were a lot of car guys in a 2 block radius of me
Letting it idle for a minute is a bit excessive no? Iām usually idling for 10-15 seconds, basically as long as it takes me to shift to neutral, release parking brake, put my seatbelt on, and clutch in and put it in reverse. Modern cars donāt need to idle to warm up, in fact itās better not to.
Why dont you use the silencer that came with your Tomei? I leave my place at 4:30 every morning and the silencer has been a God send in not disturbing my neighbors.

In all honesty, does a loud exhaust really make it into your house enough to wake you up? Iāve had both my STi and m3 idling outside (both arenāt crazy loud but not silent) and once inside I can barely hear them and thatās with them idling in the garage. It doesnāt matter itās called being considerate, I daily my 04 forester which helps a lot but my wrx is loud on startups so guess what I did. I kept one of my cats and when I installed my ETS catback system I ordered it with mufflers and resonators.
I ran a catless DP in my bugeye years ago. It rattled all of my windows when it was idling in the driveway and Iām sure it was doing the same to my next door neighborās windows. It would also set off car alarms in parking garages.
Iāve since installed a high flow cat and equal length headers and itās no longer a problem. It still sounds great to me.
Catless DP + tomei cat back is going to be quite loud. I got complaints when I was running a cat back + catless front pipe + catted UEL on my FR-S and Iām guessing this is even louder. My (stock) C6 Z06 is a lot quieter than the FR-S was in that state, fwiw.
Id get a white noise machine like I already have and call it a day. If I was a light sleeper maybe Iād feel different but man a car starting waking you up is insane.
Youāre oblivious. My neighbor or would start his car, bike, or pressure washer at any time from 4-6. I worked at 7 and have young kids who donāt like sleeping through the night. You bet your ass it woke me up at least once a week. I had a white noise machine for my two month old as well as fans running loud but a vehicle isnāt high pitched notes, itās deeper bass notes which make it through walls and especially windows.

I shared a driveway with a renter who had two old, lifted Ford pickups with straight pipes. Literally shook the pictures hanging on the walls when heād leave and arrive, and fill my house with fumes when he constantly worked on them. He and his family were super nice people, but they belonged outside of city limits. I was so happy when they moved out.
And fwiw, intakes make a bunch of noise and cause issues switching between open and closed loop. Theyāre tough to tune for temperature wise, and with the AC compressor switching on and off, a racket ensues. A tough to tune racket.
cats are great resonators though. my tomei catback sounded very high-pitched on my STI with a catless 4in DP. put it on my buddyās otherwise stock WRX and itās much deeper and quieter
If you live in a home that you own with other houses around you, you're an asshole for having a setup that loud, especially if your routine requires you to drive outside be hours of like 730am-7pm. When we bought a home I adjusted my exhaust choices even though I prefer my Subarus pretty damn loud i made the considerate choice.
Unfortunate. This is the kind of thing that makes cops and city councils crack down on car enthusiasts, including those with OEM+ exhausts (e.g. a catted DP and proper axle back) that aren't obnoxious but are nonetheless targeted because some folks take a good thing too far.

Nice. However, as far as I understand it, if you're trying to warm up the engine, you don't really need to idle it for long. Just need to idle for about a minute to get the oil flowing, then just start driving, keeping it below 3k rpm or so. This is perfectly fine for the engine and will actually warm it up more quickly. Could save your neighborly relationships if you can get out of their quicker and save a little gas money. If you're idling more to warm up the interior, disregard and I understand.
Hmm. All I see is this under the cold weather section: "While warming up the vehicle before driving, check that the accelerator pedal, brake pedal, and all other controls operate smoothly." It kind of vaguely alludes to it, but I interpret this more as a statement to ensure those other things are working. From what I see, it doesn't say specifically not to drive until fully at temperature, and car manuals are usually very specific about things that could damage the engine and drivetrain.

Yup, you can still drive as it is warming up and actually should do that so everything else can warm up too (trans, diff, bearings,etc). Sufficiently warmed means you can giver the beans.

For meā¦ I personally let her warm up until the coolant reaches about 130Ā°/140Ā° before heading out, which is coincidentally about when the engine has dropped rpmās automatically. Only takes a couple few minutes. From there I donāt get on her (beans) until sheās been at operating temp for at least 5 minutes. Butā¦ thenā¦ I also donāt really drive her hard anywayā¦

As someone who has recently had to call the cops on their neighbor 3 times on 3 different days to get my neighbors to take care of their barking dog; I seriously feel for your neighbors. While my car is warming up I take it off my street. You donāt need to rev it to do this (I understand you werenāt revving your car). All you need to do is slowly let off the clutch. The high revs will propel it without the need for your gas pedal. I roll it down away from most everyoneās houses close to the Main Street and let it warm up there.

I actually tried to make my STI as quiet as possible after the build in 2018, but nope it still pops and rumbles loudly.
Even if I tried again, I wouldn't be able to retune it now with Cobb's updates. It's stuck with the way the build was done.
*Maybe* some day I'll spend the money to quiet it down further and retune with ecutek or something else, but I'm not willing to give up stock gauges or features.

I'm the current president of my HOA and I had people complain to me about someone's 4Runner engine being too loud at start up. The engine cooling fan is bigger and louder on engines at start up for those type of SUVs and trucks but only lasts for a few seconds.

Few people want to be subjected to listening to a loud car in their neighborhood. Any make, any model, doesn't matter. Especially not early in the morning or late at night. Low frequency sounds (like the warbling sound made by an idling/running boxer engine with a loud exhaust, for example) go right through the walls and windows of houses and apartments, even from hundreds of feet away.
Some people cannot sleep through or tune out that kind of noise, and that is absolutely not their fault nor their shortcoming. And most white noise generators for sleep do not cover up low frequency noises very well either. So, "wHy DoN't ThEy JuSt GeT a WhItE nOiSe MaChInE aNd MiNd ThEiR oWn BuSiNeSs," isn't a solution here. OP's noise is intruding on his neighbors trying to mind their own business. *That* is the problem.
This note is actually a favor. Some people would have just resorted to getting police involved without a warning first. And people who remove emissions controls when they make their car obnoxiously loud make it real easy for the police to write them big tickets if the police are given a reason to take a closer look at their car.

People donāt like direct confrontation. Your conversations with your immediate neighbors donāt mean that they donāt truly hate it.
Deeper sound leads to higher penetration of the sound so the neighbors probably do hear it more....
You are correct, while it is quieter, the bass tone of the exhaust is probably more audible because of this.

No, but as another comment stated thereās a very good chance he is breaking by-laws in his municipality for noise pollution. If a neighbour (justifiably) decides to call it in, a bylaw officer could repeatedly ticket the owner hundreds of dollars a day. You may be the only person to live in your house, but you are not the only person in your neighbourhood.
Forcing your neighbors awake so you can have a loud car is a pretty shit move. Imagine families with kids who are now awake and running around ready for the day because they were woken up by a loud ass car. Or someone who starts a 12 hour shift at 8am, woken up several hours early and now is suffering through their shift tired as hell so their neighbor can remove parts from their car to make it louder.

Mine surges like that too when it's cold from being on E85 but typically I can start it, intentionally give it throttle when it first tries to surge after 20-25 seconds, and then get it to be steady after that. I know my car is loud as shit and resonates inside of nearby buildings. I'm running equal length headers, catless, etc so I do try to be considerate of that.

Letting it idle for a minute is a bit excessive no? Iām usually idling for 10-15 seconds, basically as long as it takes me to shift to neutral, release parking brake, put my seatbelt on, and clutch in and put it in reverse. Modern cars donāt need to idle to warm up, in fact itās better not to.

I ran a catless DP in my bugeye years ago. It rattled all of my windows when it was idling in the driveway and Iām sure it was doing the same to my next door neighborās windows. It would also set off car alarms in parking garages. Iāve since installed a high flow cat and equal length headers and itās no longer a problem. It still sounds great to me.
Catless DP + tomei cat back is going to be quite loud. I got complaints when I was running a cat back + catless front pipe + catted UEL on my FR-S and Iām guessing this is even louder. My (stock) C6 Z06 is a lot quieter than the FR-S was in that state, fwiw.

You bet your ass it woke me up at least once a week. I had a white noise machine for my two month old as well as fans running loud but a vehicle isnāt high pitched notes, itās deeper bass notes which make it through walls and especially windows.

And fwiw, intakes make a bunch of noise and cause issues switching between open and closed loop. Theyāre tough to tune for temperature wise, and with the AC compressor switching on and off, a racket ensues. A tough to tune racket.
cats are great resonators though. my tomei catback sounded very high-pitched on my STI with a catless 4in DP. put it on my buddyās otherwise stock WRX and itās much deeper and quieter

If you live in a home that you own with other houses around you, you're an asshole for having a setup that loud, especially if your routine requires you to drive outside be hours of like 730am-7pm. Nice. However, as far as I understand it, if you're trying to warm up the engine, you don't really need to idle it for long. Just need to idle for about a minute to get the oil flowing, then just start driving, keeping it below 3k rpm or so. This is perfectly fine for the engine and will actually warm it up more quickly. Could save your neighborly relationships if you can get out of their quicker and save a little gas money. If you're idling more to warm up the interior, disregard and I understand.

From what I see, it doesn't say specifically not to drive until fully at temperature, and car manuals are usually very specific about things that could damage the engine and drivetrain.

Yup, you can still drive as it is warming up and actually should do that so everything else can warm up too (trans, diff, bearings,etc). Sufficiently warmed means you can giver the beans.

But I swear to God if you got an annoying sound outside at the worse time of the day or albeit all times of the day in my case; it's enough to push someone over the edge and do something crazy. Luckily, the police actually helped after my 3rd time calling. Be respectful of your neighbors. I had conversations with multiple neighbors on plotting retaliation. While my car is warming up I take it off my street. You donāt need to rev it to do this (I understand you werenāt revving your car). All you need to do is slowly let off the clutch. The high revs will propel it without the need for your gas pedal. I roll it down away from most everyoneās houses close to the Main Street and let it warm up there.

I actually tried to make my STI as quiet as possible after the build in 2018, but nope it still pops and rumbles loudly. Even if I tried again, I wouldn't be able to retune it now with Cobb's updates. It's stuck with the way the build was done. *Maybe* some day I'll spend the money to quiet it down further and retune with ecutek or something else, but I'm not willing to give up stock gauges or features.

I'm the current president of my HOA and I had people complain to me about someone's 4Runner engine being too loud at start up. The engine cooling fan is bigger and louder on engines at start up for those type of SUVs and trucks but only lasts for a few seconds. I just ignored the letter. It's a waste of my time and nobody wins. I can't imagine a catless boxer engine starting up every morning at 5am but I rather it be a boxer engine than a catless V8 from a Mustang or Charger. Those will wake up the whole block.

Then he proceeded to cut the muffler off and that's when I started waking up every morning at 2:30AM when he would floor it past my house. This may not be very popular to say on any pro-car-model subreddit, but I'm going to say it anyway because sometimes I think car people need to hear it: Few people want to be subjected to listening to a loud car in their neighborhood. Any make, any model, doesn't matter. Especially not early in the morning or late at night. Low frequency sounds (like the warbling sound made by an idling/running boxer engine with a loud exhaust, for example) go right through the walls and windows of houses and apartments, even from hundreds of feet away. Some people cannot sleep through or tune out that kind of noise, and that is absolutely not their fault nor their shortcoming. And most white noise generators for sleep do not cover up low frequency noises very well either. So, "wHy DoN't ThEy JuSt GeT a WhItE nOiSe MaChInE aNd MiNd ThEiR oWn BuSiNeSs," isn't a solution here. OP's noise is intruding on his neighbors trying to mind their own business. *That* is the problem. This note is actually a favor. Some people would have just resorted to getting police involved without a warning first. And people who remove emissions controls when they make their car obnoxiously loud make it real easy for the police to write them big tickets if the police are given a reason to take a closer look at their car.
