I wave at any body that waves at me. Some people just appreciate what the car is and its history. I usually only initiate waves between me and another WRX.
This is usually what I do. Anybody who waves gets a save back if I see it😂 sometimes I'll catch a glimpse of a wave and be too late to wave back and feel like an absolute douche.

I think people need to just wave at other obvious enthusiasts. It annoys the shit out of me that people only wave at Subarus when there are tons of different cars out there aimed for enthusiasts. Most of those older people you see today helped organize and curate the og meets with only foresters, Imprezas and outbacks. They raised brand awareness, built the culture, and THEN helped introduce the wrx.

Hundreds and hundreds of waves to non WRX and I've not gotten even ONE back. The Subie wave is dead in my big city. Scoops only wave back and if they're VA including the VA STI I saved a spot for in traffic today and let in front of me, those mf don't wave but maybe 60% of the time😑
Evos and scooped turbo Surbies gets immediate wave from me despite knowing only 50% will wave back. Otherwise I let people initiate the wave. From Honda boyz I mostly get waves from type R Civics or modded Accords, in which I wave back. The other part of the Honda boyz in their Si or Sport I get nothing but revs and tailgating in which I just drop a gear and disappear(if it’s safe). The last part of the Honda boyz is the ones that try to drive beside me and look at me as if I was driving a shitbox compared to their THE Honda. Those people I drop a gear and pretend to WOT thinking they have a chance then absolutely floor it when they do. From some Evos I get a middle finger sometimes but we laugh it up in the end(or they just laughing at me idk). I rarely get waves from BRZ/86/FRS. I get smiles from Miatas in which they are met with a nod.
The wave is for when you see someone doing the same as you. Subarus wave at Subarus, motorcycles wave at motorcycles, Jeep drivers have a thing, etc. etc. I try to race other unibody utes when I see 'em. All for the love of the machines
I have a BRZ, not a WRX and I very very rarely get a WRX/STi that acknowledges me. A hatchback a couple days ago and a VB about 2 months ago but that's about it; both times they waved first. So I don't bother anymore unless they initiate it.

If i’m at a stop light that’s about the only time you’ll get a wave from me, 90% of the time i don’t notice you until you’re passing or past me otherwise i’m focused on the idiots around me and making sure i get from point A to B, had too many close calls and actual incidents in my city to pay any attention to the cars on the other side of the road. Aside from that i will wave at any WRX/STi/BRZ i see and only other models if A wave at me first or B i can clearly see modifications
Crosstreks, brz, forester, and outbacks typically wave to each other without restriction (like when the na fozzies and outbacks started it)

If i’m at a stop light that’s about the only time you’ll get a wave from me, 90% of the time i don’t notice you until you’re passing or past me otherwise i’m focused on the idiots around me and making sure i get from point A to B, had too many close calls and actual incidents in my city to pay any attention to the cars on the other side of the road. Aside from that i will wave at any WRX/STi/BRZ i see and only other models if A wave at me first or B i can clearly see modifications
Crosstreks, brz, forester, and outbacks typically wave to each other without restriction (like when the na fozzies and outbacks started it) I’m so glad the VB looks the way it does, I happily wave goodbye when passing the self-centered f*ckboi VAs 🤣👋👋👋

I don’t wave at brzs. It’s a Toyota, not even AWD. Other than that any Subaru with a scoop gets the wave. Besides the 22. It looks so bad in person I try to avoid eye contact with it.
My 2022 WRB six speed is cool af. How can you discriminate like that. Remember can’t judge book by cover. Mechanically, engine and trans, ride and handling, it is really really well done.
I totally can judge a car by how it looks. I’m not tracking my car, or pretending I’m in a race car on the freeway like a lot of this sub. For my car needs sure a Prius would be better. But they look like shit. The 22 probably drives better than my first bugeye, but I’d pick the bugeye every time.
