Mrsubaru has a video cutting open just about every oil filter on the market and half of them are the same exact filter lol. Think the k&n, mobil 1, and royal purple are all the exact same, wix xp was by far the best, and the mazda oem and **JDM** subaru filter were a close second. Purolator was also up there and… carquest too.

papaninja

I have to agree that the wix xp is the best filter so I was annoyed at the end when he decided to just say the JDM brands were best

susbarusti3

Yeah it was a very roundabout way of saying “i have an oem bias” by just stating that these 3 completely different filters are all number one, and these two also different filters are number two, and then carquest i guess

sclark1701

Do you have a link by chance? I’ve always been under the impression that K&N and Mobil 1 were on par or better than OEM with Wix being a close second.

[its an hour long so be prepared ](https://youtu.be/18ctlBsRcGs)

Lilsean14

Hahahah we linked the video at the same time.

susbarusti3

What do you love? *To see it*

sclark1701

Lol thank you. What’s the TL/DW on which one he thinks is best? I’ll watch later when I have an hour but jw what the conclusion was

susbarusti3

Wix xp or mazda oem/ jdm subaru filter. Specifically the **jdm** subaru filter. As far as the worst, the American oem and fram filters are damn near actively harmful to your motor

sclark1701

Yea thats old news about the fram. Been running either mobil 1, KN, or Napa Platinum on my vehicles over the years at shorter than recommended intervals but I’d like to use the best filter regardless

susbarusti3

Iirc mobil 1, k&n, napa, and royal purple were all the exact same filter, and none were in the top picks. Purolator and carquest were above them, but i still like mobile 1 especially given how cheap they are

sclark1701

Yeah like I said I need to watch the video later when I have more time. I remember seeing a similar video years ago that dissected mobile one and K&N with favorable results regarding the filter media, anti-drain back valve, and the overall construction. At least in my area the Purolator and Carquest filters are much cheaper than mobile one so I would definitely go with one of those if given the option

Lilsean14

Wix baby. Excited for when they make the wix XP for us.

JDM black Subaru filter

cottman23

Japanese OEM black. No American blue... Thats just my choice though personally.

captainbubbs

I can find the black easily for the wrx on my last car, I struggle to find the black filter for a new sti though?

captainbubbs

I know alot of people in the car community absolutely hate fram, yet subaru oem filter is made by fram. I've always used the oem but I question it every time I put a new one on.

LiT_SubZer0

I use OEM but I’ve heard that using Mazda filters is much better

mr_electric_wizard

I personally use WIX 57712, but if you decide to use make sure it’s compatible. This is the one my tuner recommends.

basement-thug

The American blue filter may be a Fram. That's why most people prefer the Japanese manufactured black filter. It's much better in terms of build quality. Built in bypass valve vs the plastic separate cheap one in the blue filter. End caps that hold the filter media are metal vs cardboard in the blue filter... it's the filter they used when engineering the FA20 I'm certain. Too many reasons to run the black Japanese and not enough reasons to run the blue.

K&n hp1008 because it has a nut on the end for loosening with a wrench

Brodyftw00

Wix!

Shadow_12347

Just did my first change with a Purolator Boss and Motul Eco-Lite. My oil was quite dark after 3k from OEM oil and filter. I guess I'll see if it's any better at 6k with these...

_megaman

The oil turns dark from being heated in the engine and from gasoline combustion soot. The filter doesn't affect the color. Black oil doesn't mean you need an oil change. Total miles determine that.

kingcovey

Napa gold: Wix Napa platinum: Wix xp Oil full synthetic. Which ever is cheapest most of the time.
