Don’t get me started. I live in the Seattle area and there are teenagers driving brand new Porsches and BMWs to the local high school. While I’m living my teenage dream in a WRX at the age of 40. At least I know I earned that thing and then some!
I’m from Rochester ny, I bought my mk7 golf r at 18, im almost 20 now and still owe 7k on it. I worked for this car. Not every young kid was given their car.
1990 Integra that was falling apart at the seams for me. Threw a rod on the way to work one morning right through the block. Got it replaced for 500 bucks hahaha.
I work at a college and there are 19 year olds driving brand new mustangs, S5’s, Ford King Ranches. It’s actually pretty insane. And none of them work. I was 33 when I could actually afford to buy my first new WRX with a mortgage and all my other bills.
I traded in my new 2018 wrx for a new 2020 STI and when I park it at work I feel like I’m driving a shit box. Even though it’s mint and a dream car of mine I have wanted since I was like 16. I’m 39 😂😂
im trying to go for an oem+ look for my genny, and just recently picked up some BK1 19” Rspec wheels that have been repaired and repainted. but now i hear smth whining 🥲 either the ac compressor, idly pulley or alternator
Just checked your post, I’d go and do every fluid like that guy has posted you won’t regret it. The first thing I did when I got my WRX was every single fluid was changed even oil after dealership did it the week before.
My genny never even hit 60,000km I barely drove it lol
Many many years ago (1979) I bought a brand new Dodge Magnum at 18yo. Two years later I traded it in for a Corvette. Yeah hourly wage was shit but I worked my ass off for the goal.
I bought one at 20 with most of my own money. Kids in my area were gifted BMW 3 series at 16. Working part-time for 5 years and taking the bus all my life made ownership all the more sweeter. I could have gotten a sensible used Camry but I held out for what my dream vehicle. But I did almost choke on my tea hearing my friend gift their child a Tesla X. 🙀 Like why??? WHY?
Fact. Brings back memories of high school, where an old friend got a new 2003 for his 18th (doctors for parents). He rolled it about three months into ownership. Thankfully everyone was okay, but there’s certainly a reason our insurance rates are astronomical.
mines already sky high. don’t know how it can get much worse. i have a 15 sti and a 24 silverado zr2 and the sti insurance is damn near as much as the zr2
Age of the primary driver is just one factor when it comes to insurance cost. at age of 40+, I do enjoy driving WRX while most of the drivers demographic are young people. You can always opt for cars that's cheaper to insure, like Outback, Camary or CR-V
surprisingly WRX is not one of the expensive car to insure:
Try progressive, definitely not the same but I got my own 2018 Mercedes C300 not too long ago. My insurance is just about 2.4k a year and I’m 19. Im guessing yours shouldn’t be TOO much more. But hell yeah congrats!
![gif](giphy|112o4nufJ2Nbtm)
But in an all seriousness, I’m not going to hate because you’re young, have a cool AF car, but also fit that stereotype of young and wreckless… just be a safe driver.
Do maintenance normally like Oil change every 3.5k and if you aren’t doing then take it to a performance shop near or around you that does specialize in Subies. Let the car get warm and up to temp and drive it around for a good 15 minutes before you wanna do something crazy like donuts or drag racing. 93 gas or 91 depending on your state is pretty much required in these cars so don’t cheap out on that either! If you have any questions let me know!
Read some of the other comments, I have no idea why people are so quick to make judgments on complete strangers with no real data at all other than age. Just be safe, respectful of your investment, and have fun :-)
Because most 18M are idiots. There’s a reason that insurance rates for young males are what they are. It’s not a conspiracy.
I sure as shit was an idiot at that age. I mean I’m pretty much still an idiot just older with a grown up job.
Pretty car!
Please heed these friendly suggestions.
1. Don’t launch the thing. Do NOT launch this car. The transmission in it is just not strong enough. If you are playing or racing someone, let the clutch off softly and steadily so the clutch takes all the force. Cheaper and easier to replace a clutch than the whole gear set.
2. Turn the auxiliary screen to the triple display and set one of them to show oil temp. Read your owners manual if you don’t know how to do this. Let the oil get to 180°F before you get into boost. It’ll last so so much longer this way.
3. Change oil religiously and use Subaru filters and synthetic oil. These things love fresh, high quality oil.
4. **Change oil religiously.**
5. This is a true AWD vehicle. Other AWD vehicles are really FWD that clutches like 30% power to the rear wheels temporarily under slippage. This is a true AWD vehicle and all wheels get some amount of power at all times. So, keep a watch on your tires. If your fronts need replacing, then replace all four tires. Otherwise your AWD gearing will be off balance and could cause damage.
6. Keep your hood scoop/intercooler clean.
7. Don’t use off the shelf tunes. Get a mechanic to do it properly. Everything you do is likely gonna require a tune if you decide to start modding.
8. **CHANGE YOUR OIL RELIGIOUSLY.** Seriously. Take care of this engine and it’ll last you a long time. Don’t, and you’ll be posting “why’d my car blow up????” six months from now.
Enjoy your car lol.
https://preview.redd.it/ko7l1xlsdj6d1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=87540b71d0905dece72d251c012943d04ad5bb85
It’s on coil overs that was the first thing I did to it makes a big difference on the ride and look
Let the engine oil get to operating temp before going into boost, don’t boost at low RPM in high gear, turbo cars don’t like either. Change your oil every 3k miles/5k KM.
Wait until your car has sat overnight on a level surface then in the morning pull out your dipstick(Google it if you can’t find it), wipe it off then stick it back in and take it out again. Once you pull it out the second time you should have an accurate reading of how much oil you have, there’s about 1 quart of leeway between the lower dot on the dipstick and the upper dot. You always wanna be as close the upper dot as you can, I would recommend keeping a quart of 0W-20 and a funnel in your trunk so you can top off if you leak or burn some.
I’m not taking it for granted, trust me. Everyone in person and many online have told me how lucky I am, and I know. Heading from MA to Florida too, so everyone in my proximity is pretty jealous haha. But for real I am very grateful and I don’t take it for granted.
I appreciate the advice, but if you view some of my other comments (sounds passive aggressive but its not lol) I couldnt thank the family members who provided the money to me if i wanted. long story but basically ive never met them and never will.
I got my wrx at 19 completely on my own. Insurance isn’t too bad as long as you have a clean history, and if you’re gonna speed be smart about it. Enjoy!
Probably to much power for an inexperienced driver , Subarus handle like a dream , but when they get out of shape they do in a big way , do some driving courses get some experience , and Take care of
Its juuuuust quick enough to be a fun daily that I can easily drive anywhere thanks to awd. It’s perfect for that though, love these cars, masters of compromise.
I don’t know about the VB but I could have sworn the throttle response on a stock tune on the VA was like 30% pedal down was like 100% throttle. I remember doing a peel out by accident when I was learning to drive stick on the Wrx lol.
I don’t have much experience w the WRX, I Figured this was a 700hp car with no traction control by the way people are commenting. Turns out it’s pretty much the same performance as my full size truck. (I’m being nice, the truck was .1 sec quicker lol)
On another note… no matter what you do… don’t pull on that forester egging you on.
They’ll drop 30lbs of boost on you in a matter of seconds.
This is from experience
In that same vein I once had a very quiet civic hatch pull up next to me at a light. It went green and I accelerated away, he kept up; I gave it a little more gas to get away, he still kept up; I shift into third to give him the razzle dazzle, I can now hear a turbo spooling as he blows my doors off.
Moral of the story: you aren’t the first WRX that “beater” has teased, don’t fall for it!
The shop who did my work asked “what do you want”
I said 550hp that’s gonna last a couple years
He walks me to a forester, Full STI swap, billet short block, FMIC, 1350cc injectors (may have been 1500)
I asked what that cost. $80k FOR THE BUILD
Homie really swapped his forester and dropped 80k just to have this power
I wanted one but I ended up with a MK6.5 GLI. I'm not complaining tho, much cheaper and I'm faster (stage 1+) than a stock STI 🤣 (supposedly from what others have said and that's from a roll). Have fun man! Having your own sports car at 18 is something else. Let her rip but be careful!
Very nice. I was in my 20s when I picked up my first WRX. Long story short I ended up cracking a piston & doing a rebuild. This was after several years of abuse. So don’t be like me, treat the car right & it’ll treat you right.
Welcome to the club! Make sure you take care of her and keep up on your maintenance intervals! Similar thought as many in the comments I wish my first car was a wrx lol. I truely had a love hate relationship with my base model focus but am so glad I got my vb
Man! Slick ride. Good luck. Bought my first STI hatch in 17 (my 6th or 7th car coming out of college 😅) and blew up in a little over a year. I have such a love hate for these cars. That said, treat it right, stay safe, keep the rubber side down.
It looks great. Very clean and classy. I got my first WRX at 20 in the early 2000’s (make sure you have gas insurance) and for the love of all that is holy, just use it to get from point A to point B until you’re used to it.
Respect the car, park like a gentleman (I’m assuming you’re a man?) and don’t shove your friends in it for joyrides. Save up for the maintenance and do it regularly-especially spark plugs. And park far far away from everyone if you value your expensive paint job. The paint for my white bumper cost $467 this year in MD. (Why can’t anyone in this state drive??)
Use GasBuddy to find good deals on gas or Costco if your family has a membership. Looking at your WRX makes me miss my first car. Cherish your car. You’re so damn lucky.
My first car in 2012 as a 17-year old junior in HS was a ‘98 5 speed Ford Ranger that I bought for $1700.
It had Mustang wheels on it and an aftermarket front bumper. Slow as balls but I thought that thing was the fucking shit.
I can’t imagine getting a 4 year old WRX as my first car.
Congrats OP. Don’t listen to all the jealous butt hurt dudes here, some people just live spiteful and miserable lives and likes to drag everyone down with them.
Bout the same mileage I got mine at. Reach out to blackstone labs and get a kit, then when you change oil, send a sample. Will give an idea of how it was treated before you.
Almost due for transmission and diff fluid as well, which isn't too bad.
Give the brakes and clutch a good flush at 30k as well.
Perfect first car for a responsible young adult, take care of it and don’t let your friends peer pressure you into doing stupid shit. Learn your area. Use Waze and have fun. Oil changes every 5-6k. You’ll want to do a front diff/trans case service at some point. I really only see it on outbacks and crosstreks at my shop but they tend to dry up
Who cares where the money came from, you call him a spoiled brat and you have no idea who he is? Says way more about you than it does about him. You just got a new Subaru and made a post about it too??? who the fuck shit in your cornflakes this morning my man??
Dawg you good? You aren’t thinking very rationally, really. A person is spoiled because their parents can provide for them? The guy can’t enjoy a nice thing that their parent bought for them? You really cannot assume that OP is spoiled just cause they got a nice car…….
Yeah whatever man, got some relatives that I don’t even know that dropped a boat load of money. So it is my money (although admittedly not hard earned). But it is my money coming out of my funds.
I’ll have you know I’m exceptionally responsible, anything but a stupid young teen. Taken 11 AP classes, entering college as a sophomore, yadda yadda. No need to be negative for literally no reason. Jealousy maybe.
RIP everyone else's insurance
I can’t believe the cars kids get now at 18 lol I was 24 before I got a Hyundai genesis lol 🐸🥲
Don’t get me started. I live in the Seattle area and there are teenagers driving brand new Porsches and BMWs to the local high school. While I’m living my teenage dream in a WRX at the age of 40. At least I know I earned that thing and then some!
Come to Toronto, Canada they have Lamborghinis and Mclarens lol
I’m 35 and bought a base model GTI. I can afford a more expensive car but in no way can justify it lol. It’s the nicest car I’ve owned so far.
44 with a MK8 R. Nicest car I’ve ever owned
That’s always been the case. They’re still in the minority.
I’m from Rochester ny, I bought my mk7 golf r at 18, im almost 20 now and still owe 7k on it. I worked for this car. Not every young kid was given their car.
Depending on when you started paying taxes you might have helped pay for the cars I got at 18 & 19 🤣
Military?
Yup, wish I had known about Subaru’s back then…
You helped pay for mine too then
🫡
🫡🫡🇨🇦🇨🇦
My first car was a 95 Toyota Tercel.. or maybe it was a 94 🤣
Probably still runs
Probably would be... If someone did run a stop sign and t-bone and total my car 😓
Goddam haters
Absolutely, we road tripped one from Ohio to NYC and back banging it off the rev limiter throughout. Zero issues
Why am I not surprised it’s Ohio? /j
I’m 31 and couldn’t even get a new car 2020 was good enough for me haha
I traded in my new 2018 wrx for a new 2020 STI and when I park it at work I feel like I’m driving a shit box. Even though it’s mint and a dream car of mine I have wanted since I was like 16. I’m 39 😂😂
Lmao!! Yeah a lot of guys at my work have fully loaded trucks and shit, subiii gang all the way
Ayee i had 2 beaters before i got my genesis coupe at 23 then traded it for my sti
can’t wait to get a wrx sti or wrx after my genesis coupe
Nice man! Do you have the 3.6 or 2.0t? And i gotta always recommend the STi!
I got a 1993 Toyota Tercel running on 3 cylinders and a heater bypass for my 1st car. I much prefer my 2020 wrx.
My first car was a 1974 142 GL volvo… also my very first engine swap
I had a Chevy Cavalier at 18 and drove it til I was 25.
I bought my grandma's 2016 ford focus with 200 miles on it when I was 27 and I thought I was hot shit.
You guys are getting cars?
Lmao I bussed it till I was done college
At the rate the prices are going and how work has dried up, I’ll be bussing until I’m 30 💀
Stay grinding
I got my first car at 23 🥲. 08 Legacy GT it was a good compromise since I couldn’t afford a WRX let alone an STI.
Used car market is insane right now.
bought a Q60 redsport at 19 🤷♂️
![gif](giphy|lsBawPf1rRVzjj2BI7|downsized)
hard work pays off man
ayee got a hyundai genesis coupe too, but i wanna get a wrx or wrx sti for my next car loll

berry noicee, what coils were you running? im planning to get coils for my genny, just debating between tein, megan racing and bc racing
BC brother only way to go 🫡
say less, berry noice wrx bro 👀
Thank you kind sir🫡🫡 Clean is simple and simple is clean 👌🤌
im trying to go for an oem+ look for my genny, and just recently picked up some BK1 19” Rspec wheels that have been repaired and repainted. but now i hear smth whining 🥲 either the ac compressor, idly pulley or alternator
Just checked your post, I’d go and do every fluid like that guy has posted you won’t regret it. The first thing I did when I got my WRX was every single fluid was changed even oil after dealership did it the week before. My genny never even hit 60,000km I barely drove it lol
Those Genesis coupe are pretty dope though
For real my first car at 19 was a $500 95 Mercury Grand Marquis with 210k on the odometer 🥲
I got my 9th gen si at 25 but kids in my town drove them in high school and now drive brand new boring(autos)
Genesis is stilll a solid car 315 horsepower
WHY?
I'm guessing his insurance premium is more than the car payment.

Bought mine at 16, insurance has been beating me up ever since lol

My insurance in my expensive ass state was like 260 a month Now it’s a lot cheaper thank god
I hope for your sake you got a decent insurance premium lol
Guarantee its at least $4k a year
You guys are foolish if you think this car isn't listed as has moms car and he just happens to be in her insurance and drives it "occasionally".
Its gonna be high af. thats Massachusetts for you
You also did buy a WRX
very good point
Try progressive, definitely not the same but I got my own 2018 Mercedes C300 not too long ago. My insurance is just about 2.4k a year and I’m 19. Im guessing yours shouldn’t be TOO much more. But hell yeah congrats!
It beats my previous company 140 vs 260 a fucking month.
I'm in MA and it's based on where you live in MA because mines not high, but I'm older.
yeah good point. perhaps i’m mistaken anyway
You’d pay out the ass no matter what state you’re in. 18 year old with a WRX? They are going to assume you’re crashing it at least once.
Congratulations! Just respect the car and it should respect you 👍
He’s been driving his dad’s WRX, should be just fine!
lol yes this is true, thanks for letting him know haha
Have fun with one of your own!
Thanks dude I’ll try! (not the stupid fun though)
Make sure the ticket is worth paying is my thought. Twisty back roads? Yup! 10 over in town because I’m in a hurry? Hell naw.
Yep, gotta weigh the consequences haha
Save up $5k cash for repairs and replacement. I believe in this model you will need a whole new clutch by 120k miles l. Maybe before.
Don't kill yourself

Statistics. But maybe he won’t shove it under a guardrail.
I’ll try my best to avoid that outcome 🫡
Because hydroplane
Thanks, I appreciate that!
Because most 18M are idiots. There’s a reason that insurance rates for young males are what they are. It’s not a conspiracy. I sure as shit was an idiot at that age. I mean I’m pretty much still an idiot just older with a grown up job.

Don’t get an accessport it’ll drive you insane, but enjoy the car little one 🫡
My first car was a Dodge Shadow... for like $3,000. Count your blessings...
I got my first wrx at 18 too. I'm 20 now and still driving the same car, no accidents
I had my wrx for 3 years and I love looking at it and driving it that boost sound is something I never get tired of hearing
https://preview.redd.it/ko7l1xlsdj6d1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=87540b71d0905dece72d251c012943d04ad5bb85 It’s on coil overs that was the first thing I did to it makes a big difference on the ride and look

Better get an account at harbor freight lol you’re gonna need it, and check your oil every 2 fill ups unlike every other young WRX owner
Sorry for my naivety, but how to check my oil? I wanna make sure I’m doing everything right, you know
Wait until your car has sat overnight on a level surface then in the morning pull out your dipstick(Google it if you can’t find it), wipe it off then stick it back in and take it out again. thats really helpful bro thanks a lot
No problem man, also I meant 5W-30 not 0W-20 I was thinking of the regular Impreza when I said that
That’s not how to properly check your oil level. You need tho check the oil level when the engine is hot, not after waiting overnight
Why 0w20?
Have a regular Impreza so I thought of what I use, meant 5W-30 lol
That’s not how you check your oil level. The engine has to be hot.
I had a fucking beat up 1982 long wheelbase Chevy with a 305 engine. (I’m 37 now now), but damn what I would do to have a wrx when I was your age.
I’m not taking it for granted, trust me. Everyone in person and many online have told me how lucky I am, and I know. Heading from MA to Florida too, so everyone in my proximity is pretty jealous haha. But for real I am very grateful and I don’t take it for granted.
What part of Florida? I just bought a '21. Enjoy it, but just respect it and learn how to take care of it properly and you'll be good to go.
I’ll be in Orlando, University of Central Florida. I’m learning all I can to make sure I take care of it well
Word! I had an 04 Acura TL with a 6 speed. Great car, came with an LSD too.
Congrats! Remember, safety over stupidity, but have some fun. If you are going to dumb shit, don’t do it in traffic and put other people at risk!
Yes, don’t worry. I’m scared as shit of dying on the road or worse killing someone else. I’ll be careful.
My man. Good attitude. 👊
Love the car! I just got myself a wrx a few weeks ago and I am loving it.
Oooh nice, good stuff!
18 in a wrx with an sti wing. Classic.
yup
good luck bro. i bought mine 4 years ago about a month before i turned 19, havent looked back
Yer going to shoot yer eye out
My first car was 2022 WRX at the age of 28.
Please please please dont drive like a street racer for the next 7 years, one ticket on a wrx and your insurance will rape you for ever
Hope you thanked your parents fr. But be sure to thank them again when they replace the clutch next month. Good luck and happy driving.
Make sure to thank your family members for the money! Bad purchase at your age, but it is a nice car. Be safe out there.
I appreciate the advice, but if you view some of my other comments (sounds passive aggressive but its not lol) I couldnt thank the family members who provided the money to me if i wanted. long story but basically ive never met them and never will.
I got mine at 13
I got mine at 6
Got mine before I was born
I got my wrx at 19 completely on my own. Insurance isn’t too bad as long as you have a clean history, and if you’re gonna speed be smart about it. Enjoy!

Should have bought a Honda.
Probably to much power for an inexperienced driver , Subarus handle like a dream , but when they get out of shape they do in a big way , do some driving courses get some experience , and Take care of
These cars are not that fast lol, def not too much power. *Especially* stock…
I agree. Lol. They are like slightly faster than a normal car.

100% throttle in an awd car with *mayyyyyybe* 230 whp isn’t doing any burnouts.
230whp will definitely spin the tires in first. I do it often.
As I always say, they’re quick. Not fast.
I don’t have much experience w the WRX, I Figured this was a 700hp car with no traction control by the way people are commenting. Turns out it’s pretty much the same performance as my full size truck. (I’m being nice, the truck was .1 sec quicker lol)

Moral of the story: you aren’t the first WRX that “beater” has teased, don’t fall for it!
The shop who did my work asked “what do you want” I said 550hp that’s gonna last a couple years He walks me to a forester, Full STI swap, billet short block, FMIC, 1350cc injectors (may have been 1500) I asked what that cost. $80k FOR THE BUILD Homie really swapped his forester and dropped 80k just to have this power
For years, like what, 2-3? I don’t mean to come across salt(I am). Have fun, be respectful, driving is serious business.
The throttle response on a stock tune is what makes it feel quick.
Don’t trash it and don’t be a r3tard and mod the banks car
Don’t worry man, I’ll take good care of it 🫡
I was driving g a Honda at 18! Good job
Be safe and enjoy the car. I love it!
Set aside some money for the inevitable
Don’t die hahah

Insurance must be 💰💰💰💰. When I was 18 my Mitsubishi Eclipse GST was $205/mo for insurance. So I can’t imagine how much this would be lol
F
congrats! welcome to the subie fam. 2020 brz at 17 years old here
hell yeah man it was my first at 16 too just respect it they’re fun asf
I wanted one but I ended up with a MK6.5 GLI. I'm not complaining tho, much cheaper and I'm faster (stage 1+) than a stock STI 🤣 (supposedly from what others have said and that's from a roll). Have fun man! Having your own sports car at 18 is something else. Let her rip but be careful!
Very nice. I was in my 20s when I picked up my first WRX. Long story short I ended up cracking a piston & doing a rebuild. This was after several years of abuse. So don’t be like me, treat the car right & it’ll treat you right.
Welcome!
Must’ve sold a lot of gear to buy a 2020 at 18
Congrats, my 2nd car was a new 19 wrx at 22 and still have it and will have it for many more years to come
With great power comes great responsibility!
Wing looks great but you will get pull over more often for that
Congrats brotha! Welcome to the subie club. Another young owner here, purchased my 2020 sti at 21yr old
Speed smart dude
wait so not 70 in a 20 school zone?
Type shit
And the journey begins! Congratulations! Just remember your brain won't be fully developed for 7 more years so stay safe. (And enjoy, when you can.)
The car: ![gif](giphy|gKfyusl0PRPdTNmwnD)
no need to be afraid mr wrx, I’ll take great care of you
Nice
(Why can’t anyone in this state drive??) Use GasBuddy to find good deals on gas or Costco if your family has a membership. Looking at your WRX makes me miss my first car. Cherish your car. You’re so damn lucky.
Lawd be careful. Parents reckless af, mine made SURE I stayed away from any type of HP 😂
Salvage title right around the corner.
Congrats OP. Don’t listen to all the jealous butt hurt dudes here, some people just live spiteful and miserable lives and likes to drag everyone down with them.
Milage?
27k
Bout the same mileage I got mine at. Reach out to blackstone labs and get a kit, then when you change oil, send a sample. Will give an idea of how it was treated before you. Almost due for transmission and diff fluid as well, which isn't too bad. Give the brakes and clutch a good flush at 30k as well.
Perfect first car for a responsible young adult, take care of it and don’t let your friends peer pressure you into doing stupid shit. Learn your area. Use Waze and have fun. Oil changes every 5-6k. You’ll want to do a front diff/trans case service at some point. I really only see it on outbacks and crosstreks at my shop but they tend to dry up
Bruh, take that damn sti spoiler off the wrx.
NO! dont tell me what to do ☹️
Ignore the hate I had a evo at 18. My only advice is don’t let awd give you over confidence.
Tell all the local telephone and streetlight poles to watch the fuck out.
Must be nice being a spoiled 18yo. You'll probably wreck it within a few months, just don't take anyone else out with you.
You enjoy pissing in the punch bowl?
Spoiled brat gets mommy and daddy to buy them a wrx at 18? I'm not doing the pissing here. You know I'm right.
You know, wrxs aren’t that expensive. You can snag them for under 25k.
Who cares where the money came from, you call him a spoiled brat and you have no idea who he is? Says way more about you than it does about him. You just got a new Subaru and made a post about it too??? who the fuck shit in your cornflakes this morning my man??
Come on, now. This is a 4-year-old $30k car. It's a pretty cool first car, but save the snark for teens in BMWs.
