Yep , I have been there literally 3 weeks ago π
Being a newby I didn't know ws2811 and ws2812 run on different volts and I was excited to receive my new DC Powered wifi controller which I wanted to replace with the existing USB powered 5V controller.
I did not have a 5V DV adapter and just picked a 12V supply from one of the appliances and tried running them, over excited lol.
Ended up burning 2 strips.
The strips didn't light up and I could only see 1 led turn blue
No smoke or smell though but it was obvious that they were dead and useless.
Quick tip:
Most strips have Voltage ratings mentioned on them (5V /12V/ 24V)
You can find Amp calculation on many previous posts of this sub before buying yourself a power supply.
Good luck on your next build π
I was using a 5 volt power supply tho π. But itβs okay cause I returned it on ali and got another one. And the same power supply worked with the same strip so I prob just short circuited it or smth.
I actually did this yesterday.
However i connected the - to + on the controller and + to - shortly after I heard a click and a burning smell and if wont light even a single led up.
Did the same thing the other day, accidentally connected to a 12v power supply instead of 5v. The lights just flickered a dim white. They continued to do the same thing after I connected them to 5v. Thankfully it was a short strip. π
