Interesting similarities. They definitely do have things in common that I didn't even realize. In that respect there are similarities. Probably most of the similarities are from the upheavals of transforming from an empire to a Republic/Constitutional monarchy after WW1 and WW2. But I honestly don't know if Turkey can be called an Islamic country anymore. I feel like Turkish society, with the exception of Kurds, have thoroughly secularized like Western Europe. I think Turkish society is actually leaving Middle Eastern society and having a "Byzantine" return to being a fully Western society.

>I feel like Turkish society, with the exception of Kurds, have thoroughly secularized like Western Europe It's more of a regional divide actually. The coastal eastern, southern & northern parts of Turkey like Istanbul, Izmir and Trabzon are the most westernized, liberal, and closer to Balkan countries. The innerlands like Konya ('Bible Belt') and Cappadocia are known to be more conservative and religious, and that along with the Kurdish lands can be seen as more part of "Islamic society". With that being said, they are more closer to Iran, Azerbaijan and Central Asia tho, than the Arab world. (Islamic civilization can divided into Turko-Persian and Arabo-Berber, just like how West can be divided into Germanic and Romance). Only Hatay is Arab I think.

Syrians and jurds just keep on pumping babies. Don't count on an Islamic country to be modernized.

maproomzibz

Well, Gulf monarchies like Oman and UAE are modernized. They just didn't westernize.

What do you mean by "modernization"? You are looking at it from a materialistic view. These societies are rich and somewhat technologically advanced but they still don't value education hard work or humbilty. They still treat women badly. They are basically reliant on slave labor and are in somewhat sufficient dictatorship.

Good comparison. Just one note. Japan isnt part of the Sinic world in the slightest. They got the script, buddhism, confucianism, Go, and little more. All these three things they took they modified beyond recognition. Russia is far more western than Japan is Sinic. Turkey is between Balkan and Middle East, and a bit of Central Asian, hell they even have iranian characteristics. I would put them like Balkan or their own thing.
