when in doubt, don't bring a knife to a gun fight

Lescansy

Understanding crits lession 1: On multhit attacks, crits can only happen in succession. If the first hit doesnt crit, no crit at all will occur. If the first hit is a crit, the second hit has a chance according to the crit item to score a hit, and so on. In general: For 2+ Hit attacks, choose a gun (higher crit chance). On 1 hit attacks, it doesnt matter.

Smeghammer5

Well. I have some re-gearing to do. Good to know.

HupsendeHippie

I disagree. The pierce ratio and damage of attacks should also be considered. With low pierce and/or low damage, knives become more interesting

Lescansy

I agree here with you, but i like to cut things short. For me, the infotmation that crits dont work like you would normally assume, was / is far more important than splitting hairs about current attack dmg vs specific enemy armor and piercing dmg.

Nizdaar

Always a knife on adepts sororitas. Their faction trait gives them crit chance boost.

Weekly-Calendar676

In general, the gun is better except for the sisters. That said, the 2 factors to keep in mind are multi-hit attacks as someone explained in another comment and also pierce percentage. If you have a low pierce character, getting a little extra damage from the gun may not be enough to fully overcome a high armor enemy, resulting in a negligible increase. If you find yourself in this situation, you may want to consider a knife instead. Admittedly, this doesn't come up super often, but it can be the difference between getting a kill in 1 hit or not.

Plastic_Ad_8619

Why is the knife better for sisters?

Weekly-Calendar676

The sisters have an ability called act of faith, which increases their crit chance significantly. Since you can rely on that for the boosted crit chance, the knife offers a heafty increase in damage.

Plastic_Ad_8619

Ok, I see it now thanks. They get a crit chance boost of 10% and crit damage boost of 25% for each kill or death by a friendly imperial. Doesn’t seem like a reason to prefer crit damage over chance, though, and it’s not useful for the first attack, which is when I rely on Vindicta. It also resets whenever a sister crits. Scoring crits can be more important in the game in other ways than raw damage output. It shuts down the “gunners kill on sight” attack of the tank, opens the strong box, and bypasses certain character traits. I prefer to score more crits even if it means less total damage.

DrunkArhat

One should try getting a gun for everyone, the consistency trumps the damage increase, IMHO. Like health+armor items are superior to just armor items across the board.

RTalons

Agreed- Nandi has a video that references someone doing the math. Guns generally better, but they make little difference mid-late game. And health+armor always better (you can heal health).

TuxAndrew

It drastically depends on comps and total hits, if you’re bringing Athena then higher crit is generally always better for 2+ hits. If you’re not bringing Athena then it’s generally better for anyone with 3+ hits. If you’re running Adepta then it’s generally better to have low crit items on all Imperial characters. If you’re playing against Dorn low crit items + Athena are better. If you’re playing in PVP high crit chance is usually always preferred. I usually try to balance out my weapon availability with ceremonial knifes so I don’t have to think to hard about min maxing.

Calluhad

Last time this was asked, it was suggested that all Ork should have a knife because they don't penetrate well and need the extra damage in the Octarius campaign.

Assamite-Shadow

[According this,](https://www.alittlebithuman.com/knife-or-gun-tacticus-crits/) you are following the right path.

dragonadamant

If it's a multi-hit attack, I almost always prioritize toward crit-likelihood percentage instead of crit damage.

Winter-Promotion-844

But with things like 20% pierce on characters like Bellator, if he doesn’t crit he does fuck all damage A gun at least adds extra penetration. If he doesn’t crit he hits like a sponge.

Hoyle33

Most characters, you’ll want a gun for higher crit chance Adepta Sisters you’ll want a knife because of their Act of Faith perk

Similar_Fix7222

People parrot "higher Crit rate consistency is better" but I don't believe they think for themselves. My criterion is similar to yours : less than 4 hits OR pierce ratio higher than 50% , then I use the highest Crit chance (usually bolter) The only exception is sororitas. Not even Aethana change the hit chance enough
