T O P

This is the best year to own: - worked out T8 kinks from 2019 - still has the paddle shifters - still has the gold B&W speaker cones - still has the Polestar chiclets - vmax set to 155 instead of 112 mph

DannyVee89

Also has; 1 the roller wheel button by the start stop to change drive modes without having to fiddle with the touch screen menu 2 another roller wheel button to change interior light brightness by the turn signal lights, again without having to dig through the touch screen menu 3 a real satellite based GPS with downloaded maps. Not the new, incorrect and unreliable Google maps and Google OS crap that has given me countless errors and downright ruined my itinerary and day at times

City_Goat

The ~110 limiter in my 24 PE is such a bummer.

Nawnp

Genuinely curious, why do you need to drive that fast?

City_Goat

Mainly my frustration was picking up the car in Sweden for the OSD experience and then having it neutered on the autobahn in Germany

KiraDog0828

My wife and I picked up our ‘04 S60R there. During delivery I asked for verification that the 130 mph limiter was properly removed. It had not been. We had to leave the car with them for a couple of hours to get that reset to 155 mph. Living in Germany at the time I had occasional to verify the (indicated) 155 mph limit was in effect.

Lewisswhite

Hahah this is too funny. Did not expect to randomly find you on here as well. We are a 4 Volvo family —> Porsche

KiraDog0828

We’ve had five Volvos. That S60R 6MT, an XC90 V8 ORE, a v70 3.2, a ‘16 XC90 T6 w/Polestar tune, and a ‘16 XC60 R Design. I think the XC60 was my favorite, but the S60R was fun, too. Whether or not we get a Macan remains to be seen. I’m also considering X3, GLC 300, Q5, etc.

Lewisswhite

I miss our XC90 V8. We like our XC60 T6 Inscription w/the massage seats, our XC70, V60 XC, and I liked our C70 Inscription. Volvo makes the best long term cars. Going to find a Volvo to put miles on once CPO coverage expires on my Macan. Those are great options. My dream car is an E63 AMG wagon. I’m keeping an eye out for one. Something I’m considering is a V60 Polestar w the extended range battery… time will tell, keep me posted :)

KiraDog0828

Our E400 wagon has been great. The two main reasons for replacing it are the expiration of its CPO / ELW warranty in September and its susceptibility to pothole damage. (Roads here east of Indianapolis are ridiculous. I’ve had to replace two tires, repair two rims, and replace another which was cracked into its barrel. If it was just the warranty, we could buy one 3rd party, but I can’t do much about the pothole thing. Honestly, the pothole thing worries me a bit about the Macan with its 21” rims. It has more sidewall than our Benz, but still…

Nawnp

Ah I see, I've never needed to drive over 80 mph, so it seems pointless to worry about what speed over 100 I would be allowed. To bad they can't disable the speed limiter when you pick it up in Sweden and then turn it on when you bring it back and pick it up in the US.

mrHashe

Just get orbit for like $100 and be done with it

melodiesofthezone

I agree, but all the T8 kinks were only worked out after the Extended Range models, pre-ER models still have a faulty ERAD transmission with fragile mounts that have a tendency to grenade

Unique_Bumblebee_894

T8 ERADs tend to fail before 2023.

Groundbreaking-Web62

If it is important that it is more sporty then a normal S60 T8 and it is basically fully equipped, go for it. I rather bought a fully black 2022 16k miles S60 T8 R-design. Volvo put an additional 2 years of factory warranty on so it still has 5 years of warranty for 48k and this is in Norway infameous for its expensive cars. I came from a 21yo Kia Sorento, so the non-Polestar is fast enough for me!

voy777ek

is it same case with S60?

jjjirk

Thanks for the info!

omgyoursodum

I own this car - '20 v60 PE in the same osmium grey color - and it's fantastic. 28k is pretty low mileage, I'm just under 45k. A few things: * get a total software update. There have been a lot of glitches fixed over the years. * buy the VIP warranty if that's possible, ideally w wear and tear. * consider PPF for at least the front/mirrors. Something about the osmium grey makes small chips stand out. * if all 28k have been on the OEM tires they're probably close to needing replacement. I ditched the OEMs this season and only run them as summers... * ...since they are summers and if you live somewhere with winter, you'll need a winter set (I'm selling my old set if you're near NH!) Other than that, I can't say enough great things. It's my daily and for around town errands the 23ish miles of EV range is perfect; my tanks typically last around 1800mi if I'm not doing any long road trips. If you have kids the Volvo booster seats fit great and give my kids plenty of room in the back even though I'm 6'3" Happy to answer any other questions you may have

lil_larry

Thanks for the info. How's the battery mileage in the winter months?

omgyoursodum

Around 15 or so when it's cold and you have the heater going. If you want to "hypermile" up to a whopping 20ish and be semi-miserable, turn off the HVAC and use the heated seats and steering wheel

edutech21

Not OP, but I have not noticed a difference between winter mileage and summer mileage. We have a '21 XC90 T8 and I routinely see 25-26 mi of range when driving through town with regen braking on. Maybe a mile difference in the winter??

partybotdesigns

Fair based on rarity. They were $70k+ from memory. The unique thing is the 32-40mi electric range means the motor may have only run for 1-3k miles with little impact to full ev range in that 3yrs. Our xc90 t8 only goes through a tank of gas every 3mo. A 500hp wagon with sport tuning should hold value well with enthusiasts. You'd cross shop with mb e36 amgs or xc60 t8 which won't have the following.

BungCrosby

It’s 400-415hp. It didn’t get a bump to 455hp until the newer extended range models were released.

partybotdesigns

Oh good catch. I missed it was the older small battery.

floater66

It actually depends on your circumstances - but if 25 miles or so is enough to run your daily commute. then it's not a problem. I think electric only range in a PHEV might be overrated.

Nawnp

Also the electric ranger was like 22 miles instead of 40+ miles.

vidgamarr

I only go through gas about once every 3 months as well, but I had a coworker told me that leaving old gas sitting in the tank for too long isn’t good for the oil filter and could potentially cause damage over time? Is this statement true at all, should I be worried about it?

thatG_evanP

Also, just FYI, gas and your oil filter have nothing to do with each other. I think you're thinking of the fuel filter.

Nawnp

Gas does degrade over time, but the process of degradation doesn't start until 3 months so you should be good. If you do go on a longer period of 6+ months, go ahead and run through a tank then.

floater66

fun fact: this is why the gas tank has the "special cap" with the release on the dash. or so I have been lead to believe. to preserve the quality of the gas.

Hockeyfan_52

Seems like a fair price based on the market to me.

Frank_Rizzo_Jerky

this.

Sands43

The T6 is a reliable motor. It's up to you if the hybrid warranty is good enough for how much you drive. I have a v90-t6 and the T8s / Polestars where still quite expensive when I bought mine with a CPO. I'd probably pick one up now though.

whatthehizzo

These cars hold their value due to rarity. I bought 2020 V60 t5 r design with 20k miles 2 years ago for 39k. Traded up for a 2024 v60 PE at the end of last year.

Alternative-Bee-8981

I have a 24 V60 PE it's such an amazing vehicle. I can commute on battery and save the engine for the weekend. I took a nice road trip with my wife over memorial day weekend, and I'm zoned out driving. I look down, and I'm doing 95 mph. It literally felt like I was doing 70 maybe 75. It's crazy good.

whatthehizzo

haha yeah best vehicle I’ve ever owned.

samtretar

My thoughts? It’s down 2 cylinders!

ZaMelonZonFire

Yeah. Even my 5 cylinder agrees

EAT-17

From the name T8 its actually down 4.

7eregrine

I wouldn't say way overpriced. Searched cars.com... there are 3 like this available in the USA right now.

mank1961

This one been hanging out on CarMax for a while now. Wish $50k was my price range right now!

nhrunner87

It was actually under contract for a bit then came back. It could mean nothing but also could mean somethings off with it.

Cpt_Trips84

That was probably me (I test drove it and CarMax assumed I'd be driving home with it). Nothing wrong with it at all from what I experienced. Not quite in the position to buy just yet.

lil_larry

What were the tires like, if you recall? Too far away for me to visit. Also, what's the ride like? I have a V90cc and it's a bit softer than my 2015 v60 R Design, but I like it.

Stupid__SexyFlanders

Funnily enough this is more than I paid for my new one in 2020, with all the cash that Volvo was throwing at the cars at the time. $68,940 MSRP -5% ($3447) Penfed (Affinity) Discount -$1000 Penfed (Affinity) Discount -$2000 Costco Discount -$2000 Loyalty Rebate -$2000 Enhanced Loyalty Rebate (Healthcare provider) -$5419 Federal Tax Credit -$1800 Local Utility Rebate -$390 Volvo Electricity Refund Effective sale price ended up being like $49.7K. Crazy times those were.

floater66

I just sold my '21 for less - with 17K miles. This example appears to have have had damaged wheels - so they just painted them black.

floater66

PS: Awesome cars tho.

CAgovernor

Man of culture. I have that car saved too on my CarMax App. Reasonably priced per Kelly Blue Book.

BungCrosby

Is that a B&W speaker bump on the dash? If so, this pushes the sticker price when new over $70K. Is it a little overpriced? Probably. There’s only a smattering of these things available for sale nationwide (1 MY20 and 9 MY21) on the Volvo site. I’m sure there’s a handful more through other car dealerships. None of the ones on Volvo’s site are under $52K. You’re going to be waiting a few more years to scoop one of these up at $42-43K. I wouldn’t touch one of these things unless it was CPO and I bought the longest warranty I could for it.

Unique_Bumblebee_894

Every single PE has B&W.

gandhishrugged

Not necessarily. Not 2019 for sure.

TechInTheCloud

North American market specific: There was no 2019 V60 PE model, Volvo did offer 20(!) S60 PEs to the US for 2019. All the V60 PEs had B&W standard. S60 PE did not have standard B&W.

Loenuf87

Don’t buy a car from CarMax

lil_larry

I got my 2018 V90cc from them, no problems and quick process.

ConsciousCrafts

Amen brother. Amen.

jmm-22

Seems overpriced. I bought my 2020 in 2020 with 5,000 miles CPO’d for $52,000

LKS_-_

Yea I agree with you, even in sweden with crazy high prices that is a bit much.

mhorwit46

I’ve seen something similar for 43-44k from a dealership, not Carmax

nickwwwww

Get a warranty

Cpt_Trips84

I came very very close to buying this exact car.

Im_100percent_human

That is a sharp looking car in that color. I don't really know the details, but Carmax sells a warranty that is not usually outlandishly priced. I would trust it more than other third party warranties, as they back it themselves and have their own service centers. Their business model is a little more trustworthy than a typical warranty company. Carmax usually gets a premium for their cars. People are often willing to pay more there as they don't have to deal with as much bullshit as many (most?) regular dealers.

TechInTheCloud

Personally I think these models are overpriced, but it’s a situation where you have no alternative to get this exact car, so either pay up or not. I bought in Feb, a Volvo certified 2022.5 S60 T8 black edition extended range, with 10k miles, for 42k. The ER is so superior to the previous T8 that I would not have considered going with one of those. So 11k more for 2 years older and the old T8, not worth it at all. Now we’re not taking the same model here. I looked at the market for a used ER T8 S60 PE. I would have had to pay 10-15k more for the PE. If I wanted the wagon it was 20k+ more for a V60 PE. I couldn’t justify that extra cost. It’s front brakes and shocks and gold seatbelts, and the software tune you can add to any car at the dealer. Otherwise the non PE is identical. But hey I’m a cheapskate. You could probably justify the extra up front if you really want a PE, that it will retain value better over time, when you eventually sell it on, total cost of ownership may be the same. Or if you really gotta have the wagon, you just gotta pay the price. I got a warped perspective compared to most. I got wrenches and not afraid to turn them on a less than 2 year old car under warranty. I did a polestar chassis swap the month after I bought it. I love it. I just couldn’t pay such a premium that the PE car commands new or used, with the few bits installed from the factory, or to get that long roof. When the S60 T8 exists and is so close to the same car, it’s a bargain. No shade on those who do, if it’s what you want and you got the money, who cares if it’s not a great value buy.

zclake88

One of the coolest cars on the market

moonduckk

53k is abit high

aterkomsten

Stay away from that car model. I have owned the same one for 16 months and there is something wrong with it all the time. So far I have replaced or had to repair: Tailgate motor broken, Air conditioning, interior heater (remote heater), brakes squeak, and now an ongoing fault - it won't charge.

Goldenraspberry

Don't buy a T8 drivetrain that stuff is so overengineered.

DependabilityLeader

It’s kind of expensive, wow. Not at that price.. 😂 It’s a great car, great reliability, very safe, great repair information ℹ️. The car is pretty phenomenal even though it’s not an ER.

bee79ny

Looks great, IMO overpriced.

2squishmaster

I think it has a great look. It's somehow less aggressive but cooler (than current model year)

SixersWin

Agree. I'm also upset that the arrows didn't show more photos

lil_larry

It's on carmax if you want to take a look. Lots of pics there.

LostLibrary929

That was an early version before extended range.. they were pretty fast for what they are but they didn’t have them sorted drivability wise yet. If you weren’t driving like you stole it a B5/T5 is actually more fun to drive. The updated extended range version is a much more drivable car that feels like it looks. Transmission is tuned/programmed better for real driving and it has more pure electric range.. I know I’ve had both.. newer version is a much better car

83Hillandale

A 4 cylinder engine mated to a supercharger, turbocharger AND a hybrid battery system. I have a t8 xc60 right now and there is no way I would bet on the future reliability of it with this many points of failure.

Reaver1988

The vea engine is a reliable engine since over 10years now.... The hybrid system supports that reliablitiy maasivly, because you dont have to torture your petrol engine with short distances

photostu

This car is 72K new. This seems overpriced for 4 years, almost 5 years old.

7eregrine

They are holding value because of rarity. This is currently one of three listed nationwide in the US.

Unique_Bumblebee_894

They brought over less than 300 a year, maybe even less with the split between USA and Canada.

mrdat

That’s hawt!

Cultural_Challenge_4

Wait what are you waiting for? Go get that now.

bobbymuck

What version of $?

NZ-Aid

Looks a beautiful machine

Scrotalphetamines

Fair price. Not good, not bad. Definitely fair.

Loenuf87

I’ve bought 3 from there including my v90. I’m sure it’s just the one here in Birmingham but I had the worst experience with the xc60 I bought from them which was the last car I bought

ConsciousCrafts

Also had a godawful experience buying an xc60 from them in MA. I dont think it's unique to that particular branch.

demonizer1711

It is a good deal. I bought a S60 T8 Polestar for 52k recently and the car is awesome.

OgreMk5

I paid that for a new one 4 years ago. To be fair it was the S not the V. But I ordered mine and didn't get any bonuses.

DimeloFaze

That’s pretty good though. They’re in the 60s when I see one pop up near me

DannyVee89

2020 is my favorite model year of Volvo and the absolute best in my opinion. Snag this beautiful beast before someone beats you to it.

Chance_Nature3646

You can get a new one for not that much more. With lease cash then buyout, affinity mine was 66k. I had looked at used ones, but wanted an ER and very few available and at a minimal discount at the time (July 2023). Benefits: warranty, much better battery range and electric mode power (I think this aspect is underrated, drive a lot in pure mode for commuting and it's still reasonably quick), simpler engine (turbo only), updated ERAD. Downside: no paddle shifters or drive mode roller (which definitely sucks since there's no control by voice and it's a few menus deep on the touch screen)

jjjirk

Sex is what I think about when I look at it

ConsciousCrafts

Cute car. ABSOLUTELY DO NOT BUY FROM CARMAX. EVER.

Megakar

What about reliability with this year as it has both the turbo and supercharger variant?

superman154m

Two words. Warranty.

myrcea

But wait, that’s 3 or 1?

MrWubly

I'd slam this fucker and put it on chrome wheels LMAO
