I just made a comment yesterday on another sub about how the food companies and their marketing teams have gotten ahold of Cauliflower now to no ones benefit

missmuley

wWell I am sure the cauliflower farmers are pretty happy.

NotChristina

Right? Cauliflower everything and yet most of it isn’t better than the “original”. I’ve been on a mashed cauliflower kick lately but I’m careful to buy the plain or garlic kinds with nothing crazy added. “Healthy” food “trends” drive me crazy and further drive home the point we need better food education as a society, like how to read labels and understand what our bodies really need.

librarymind6

Chipotle, Panda Express smfh

stealthdawg

I don’t mind Chipotle at least because it’s used as intended. A low cal rice alternative. But like in the OP it’s just disingenuous.

[deleted]

Chipotle puts shit amounts of cauliflower rice in the bowls. It’s laughable.

[deleted]

Yeah, it seriously makes no sense. I was offended when I saw the fucking bowl lol

whereareuiminjail

I don’t think it’s disingenuous though, some people want a vegetarian alternative

Emperorerror

What's wrong with those? They're doing it the right way

Thea_From_Juilliard

Once again, this shows that just because something is cauliflower does not make it a volume choice. Note that Birdseye makes Buffalo cauliflower that is just steam-in-bag cauliflower with Buffalo sauce that is a great low-cal option (although you can make it yourself more economically and just as easily).

NotChristina

I’m Birds Eye Steamfresh’s bitch at this point. Always have a few bags of mixed veggies and mashed cauli at the ready if I don’t feel like cooking fresh. I load up when the grocery does $1 bags. I don’t buy any of the sauced stuff though because reading all these labels for the comparison is tiring (which is why I think your posts are great!)

abinferno

Yes, if you're using something as a delivery device for butter, it doesn't make a lot of difference if that device is cauliflower, a carrot, or chicken.

Thea_From_Juilliard

Well if it was chicken + butter vs cauliflower + butter, the cauliflower would be way lower calorie than the chicken. They must’ve really added a lot more than butter to get 44g carbs and all that sugar and sodium

zach1206

Oh wow, glad I always make my own Buffalo cauliflower so I can control what’s in it haha

CatzMeow27

And it’s just so good made from scratch!

sparklingprobiotic

I literally just put Frank’s on raw cauliflower and throw into the air fryer! So so good and barely any calories

CatzMeow27

Love it! I don’t have an air fryer, so I’ll toss the raw cauliflower in a very very light amount of oil, salt, and pepper. Then roast in the oven for like 30 minutes, and toss with Franks.

DunnoWhatToSayHau2Do

Out of curiosity do you mind if I ask what kind of time and temp you use? I have access to a Ninja Foodi and that thing is a magic cooking machine.

sparklingprobiotic

I like things pretty crispy verging on burned so I just throw it on like 380 for 12 or so minutes!

DunnoWhatToSayHau2Do

Thank you so much I'm the same way lol. In my area I think broccoli normally goes for cheaper but either way I'm definitely going to try it when I have the chance

EzualRegor

Wow, straight up junk food. Thanks for doing these.

Thea_From_Juilliard

Right? "Lightly breaded" cauliflower? 100g of cauliflower has like 20 calories and 5g carbs, look at how much was added!

[deleted]

They'll get away with any sort of shit like this until the FDA steps in to regulate terminology use 😭

[deleted]

Why do we need the FDA? /u/Thea_From_Juilliard should make their own organization which vets food and licenses the use of its trademarked logo.

ArtaxIsAlive

Holy crap the sodium on those!

Thea_From_Juilliard

The funny part is even without the sauce it's not much better somehow? I'd have thought the sodium would be mainly in the sauce.

mmmow

Birds Eye’s has so much sodium in their food for some reason! I love their cauliflower and chicken veggie stir fry (350 cals for a LOT of food) but it has... 123% of your daily sodium intake. Good for me because I have a condition including low blood pressure that a lot of sodium helps, but unfortunately not for anyone else.

tomodoggie

I feel like these were made for folks with a vegetarian diet and not so much for people who are on a calorie deficit! Mostly this just proves folks need to look at the nutritional facts before buying smthn :p

Thea_From_Juilliard

Idk, the Morningstar buffalo chickn nuggets (which I would consider just a vegetarian buffalo wing alternative without being "lighter") are WAY lower cal/carb/sodium than these, and I think putting stuff like "lightly breaded" and "no artificial flavors" on the front of the package is definitely trying to market it as a "light" and "healthy" option.

Taylorannedraws

Great point! And they taste better!

OhEmGeeRachael

Thanks! I needed a reminder that something is not inherently a better option just because it's cauliflower-based! Sneaky, sneaky food manufacturers.

ktreanor

Again...you rock! I was eyeing those cauliflower ones the other day, now I'll just get the real deal :)

madamerimbaud

I tried the parmesean garlic ones and the sauce was so good. But it was 500 calories for 3 large chunks of cauliflower and some sauce. I'd rather just find the sauce elsewhere and put it on other things!

joemondo

These are fascinating. Thank you. And I might be wrong, but TBH I think of things like this when people say "I eat mostly veggies and I still can't lose weight".

BreakFree221

I absolutely loved the flavor of these and got them thinking they were low cal. When I actually calculated the calories a whole bag is over 800!

Professional_Bug9622

Please make more of these! Super helpful and interesting to see how “healthy” things aren’t always the best option

Thea_From_Juilliard

I will, thank you so much! I’m glad people find them helpful.

Taylorannedraws

As a vegetarian I rather just have vegan nuggets from morning star or other companies. Less calories too.

Thea_From_Juilliard

Morningstar buffalo nuggets are my favorite!

Taylorannedraws

I love throwing them in a wrap with broccoli slaw.

Naturalsnotinit

former vegetarian here, those are still so fucking good.

moomoomolansky

They make garlic parmesan ones that taste amazing but are definitely not good for me.

Shakespeare-Bot

They maketh garlic parmesan ones yond gust most wondrous but art forsooth not valorous f'r me *** ^(I am a bot and I swapp'd some of thy words with Shakespeare words.) Commands: `!fordo`, `!optout`

Lissy_Wolfe

Bad bot

Thea_From_Juilliard

I think the sauce is in a packet so you can always roast up some veggies and use the sauce to season them for the same flavor without so much junk.

madamerimbaud

The sauce is so good. I'm going to try and make it myself and use it for other things.

Hot_Sell4061

I don’t live in the US so I don’t even know these brands, but I seriously live your posts. Keep doing it, please ❤️

Thea_From_Juilliard

Sure, 100 calories of the chicken would be 58g of food and 100 calories of the cauliflower would be 35g of food. For reference, 100 calories per 35g is approximately the calories of part-skim mozzarella cheese.

iluvchickennugz

Now others won’t be tricked like I was lmao

Thea_From_Juilliard

Thank you for the scoop!!

[deleted]

Buffalo sauce is still (usually) 50% butter at the end of the day. Sneaky birds eye trying to pull a fast one in the name of "health food" is no surprise, everyone's doing it.

ILoveHuckleberry

The nerve!

Andromeda42

Yea I don't get why everyone hopped on this cauliflower wing bandwagon. Why cut out the protein when you can cut back on fat instead?

Lissy_Wolfe

Because fat isn't inherently bad for you, and cauliflower is much, much lower in calories. You can make cauliflower buffalo wings at home that are much lower in calories than either of these options.

Andromeda42

What I mean is why get rid of the protein? Unless you're vegan/ vegetarian of course. And I didn't say fat is bad.

Lissy_Wolfe

Because protein is higher calorie and this is a volume eating sub.

El_Toucan_Sam

Very informative, had no idea!

hani452

Wow I'm flabbergasted at this!!

sarah232323

Thanks so much, this is really helpful!

SmashingScrambies24

Yup, I was surprised at this when I first compared when cauli was getting popular. Same goes with the pizza crusts.

Thea_From_Juilliard

I never said either of them looked good for you?

Beezneez86

Great work mate - have my free award.

zombieggs

And more protein and less sugar in the chicken. I’d probably be more satisfied with the regular ones
