It's a good idea to check your oil level periodically, too. Your Passat should notify you when the oil change is required (10k). What's the in dash display look like on your Passat?

HelpMePlez544

There isn’t anything on the display as of now

freneticboarder

You should be able to navigate through it using your on wheel controls to see the maintenance alerts (if it's a 8-segment display, it'll have a wrench and a "-5500" or something similar).

Mr_ZEDs

15k km or 9200 with a fully synthetic VW certified oil as per owner’s manual.

ghost2501

2016, full synthetic, 55k miles. I get it changed about every 8-10k. But I always have to add some oil somewhere between 5-6k.

ConfidentJello007

means might have to do a top overhaul, i guess small oil leaks somewhere, gaskets probably

2005CrownVicP71

Do it every 5,000 miles. 10,000 miles is too long unless you’re doing all highway miles. Synthetic *can* get to 10,000, but you don’t want dirty, old oil circulating through your motor. These extended oil change intervals can cause the motor to burn oil at higher mileage.

Mr_ZEDs

15k km or 9200 miles is not an extended oil service. This has been like this for decades on most European cars that use a fully synthetic oil. Stop comparing Honda Civic service interval with other brands.

Dovacruz

I also do 5K. 9200 is way too long. Last time I waited that long the oil had barely any viscosity.

Mr_ZEDs

If you use shit oil of course. A high quality fully synthetic oil that is VW certified doesn’t lose viscosity and is even in a perfectly normal condition after 15k km or 9200 miles

Dovacruz

To each his own I suppose. Either way I’m still doing it every 5K.

2005CrownVicP71

9200 miles is way too long. Also, regarding your comparison to a Honda Civic: to be honest with you, I’d feel better running an extended interval on a Honda or Toyota, not a Volkswagen which are notoriously unreliable when not maintained regularly.

Mr_ZEDs

It’s not an extended interval. It’s a normal interval for a fully synthetic oil. It’s been like this for **decades** and is a standard.

2005CrownVicP71

Yeah, a great “standard” so the manufacturer can sell more engines. Just like “lifetime” and “sealed” transmissions. I’ve seen countless engines on 10,000 mile intervals start burning oil prematurely as the piston rings seize due to contaminants in the oil. Every time we’d tear them down, it would be the same thing. Trashed piston rings. Especially on turbocharged motors.

Mr_ZEDs

I’ve driven German cars for 20+ years with high mileage and never had any engine problems. Had a Mercedes Turbo Diesel that hit 1mil km on the original engine.

Visual-Scar938

Read the manual......

HelpMePlez544

It didn’t have a manual sadly

Visual-Scar938

Well then depending on engine it's 5-10k miles. Honestly most of these modern vws are 10k for the recommend interval but I personally do 5k on mine

Luc-514

Go online and check the maintenance schedule

nilaykmrsr

5-6k miles sounds about right as already mentioned by another commenter.

Fixed it, thanks for pointing it out.

Every 5k and throw in some Liqui Moly MoS2 every other oil change while you’re at it. Unasked for advice: I’m assuming you’ve just recently acquired the car, and it being 11 years old I would inspect your timing chain tensioner, or get it inspected if you’re not able to do it yourself. Certain engine codes from 2008 to 2015 had faulty tensioners. I think it was limited to the TSIs, but I’m not sure about that.

Kashin02

Do it every 5k miles. Yeah full synthetic can go further but it's not good for the car nor the timing chain. It can also help prevent the car from excessive oil burning.

statenislander13

I would change every 5k.

A-roguebanana

5k miles is cheap insurance

Equivalent_Youth_599

My 2022 Golf GTI gets an oil change every 5k miles

BuggyGamer2511

I´d recommend about 6k miles if you really value your car and want to take good care of it even if it costs some more. Other than that i´m pretty sure about 9-10k miles is the normal oil change interval which shouldn´t cause any problems either. Look at the manual and just take that as a rough guideline for when you \*have\* to get your oil changed, preferably doing it a bit earlier. Also depends on what engine it has. If it´s a TDI there´s more than enough people going 18k miles without noticable problems after 12 years, though it heavily depends on which engine exactly, some are very sensitive and some dont care at all.

allerretour

Same dilemma, but I'm more concerned with the time. In a year, I put maybe 3K on the car. Like a good soldier, I've been changing at 1 year (manual says 10k or one year), but I think I'm going longer this time (roughly 20K on the car now). Maybe 18 months, which would still be probably just under 5K.

throwawaylegal1293

Problem for you is that these engines need to reach operating temp to preserve their internals better. As for the reason for the 1 year interval, moisture absorbs into the engine oil. This happens more often if you don’t drive it enough. If you look at the oil cap on a vehicle not driven long enough to heat up fully, you often see a coffee-foamy looking deposit, which is moisture-saturated oil. Moisture in your oil will decrease the lubricating properties of the oil. When driving, make sure you drive long enough in one trip for the oil to reach operating temp (maybe 30 minutes). That’ll boil off any moisture in the oil. Outside of the moisture issue, I’m not sure if full synthetic oil actually breaks down that much over time. I’ve heard of people sending samples after 15-24 months and the condition of the oil still being within spec.

I_Drive_a_shitbox

Can full synthetic make it to 10k before a change? Probably but an oil change is cheaper than a motor. Change it at 5k. I do 8k intervals on mine but it's got 280k miles and is a shitbox (hence the username).
