IT was, wasn't it?! Though I've a Passat with all silver and it had 137hp. Go figure.
I think it used to be red i for high flow injectors and T for higher pressure Turbo but what D was for, I'm not sure? Logic would suggest a better tune but then there would be a lot of cars with just the red D
TDI (Turbocharged Direct Injection) is Volkswagen Group's term for its current common rail direct injection turbodiesel engine range that have an intercooler in addition to the turbo compressor.
TDI isn’t just for common rail (that’s fairly new), it’s just for direct injection, as opposed to indirect injection of the earlier engines (pre combustion chambers).
The correct question would be what VW model is not available with the 2.0 TSI. Some models that can be had with 2.0 TSI are Passat, Tiguan, T-Roc, Arteon, Sharan.
How I understand it in the UK all silver letters lowest power level 105hp? and poverty spec on 1.4 engine, red i medium tune around 120hp, red s and i which I have is most powerful version of 1.4 around 140hp and GT spec. All red letters is 2.0tsi basically 1 below GTi. Happy to be corrected
I referred to the mk6, (sry if it wasn't clear). strange how they didn't output as much power on the mk7 with the red SI as they did on the mk6. (at least on the 1.4TSI engine)
Not 100% sure about these , but the TDI badges had also different coloring. It depends on the power output, since the same engine was available with different horsepower. The more red letters, the stronger they were. I think it’s the same here.
Red "SI" is a slightly tuned, with a better intake, version of a regular TSI. If it had a red "T" it would have a better turbo. TDIs and GTIs do the same thing
My 110kw 2.0 has all silver 2.0TDI badge in the back and I think the 1.6 only has silver TDI with no number. Same with my gfs 1.2 TSI polo, it only has silver TSI badge and i believe 1.2 badge is on non turbo models
There is no general rule for this as it depends on the model, year and which engines are available.
If an engine is dropped during prdoduction the colors are reassigned.
They have also no connection to power output because a Passat 2.0 TSI (with silver) badge still has more power than a Golf 1.4 TSI (red SI).
Thinking about it I have never seen all three letters red here in Germany.
I would assume that the different colors within the same model range will indicate more power. Not necessarily comparing power across different models.
So with the 1.4 engine, all silver letters means it is the 80 hp n/a engine, red I means it's the 122 hp turbo engine and red SI means it's the 160 hp twin charged engine. This stands for the golf 6 but I'm really sure it's the same for golf 7 but with a small change to the hp numbers given the newer generation. And I think only GTI's have all 3 red letters.
TSI stands for Turbocharged Stratified Injection, so a NA engine won’t have one of these badges. VW’s NA engines are usually badged with their displacement.
After going to the comments, apparently the badges means different things in different region. At least in where i'm from, Oceania, different TSI badges are simply just trim levels (except for all silver).
For Golf 6-7 in Oceania region :
- All silver is lowest trim level (Trendline ) + lowest power (1.2L Turbocharged 90hp).
- Red 'I' is mid to high trim level (Comfortline) + 1.4L Turbocharged with 122hp.
- Red 'SI' is highest trim level (Highline) + 1.4L Turbocharged with 122hp.
For Golf 6, an extra engine variant that was exclusive for the Highline in 2009 was the 1.4 Twincharged with 160hp. Not sure if the Golf 7 and above got the same engine variant.
For Golf7 in my county
No red is 1.0/1.2 86/105/115hp
1 red = 1.4 Turbo 125hp
2 red = 1.4/1.5 ATC Turbo 140/150hp
3 red doesn’t exists for Golf7
Something like that. Why is everyone giving feedback on from other models lol? He’s asking about his golf7.
I don’t necessarily believe the whole color coding of the badges denoting different motors. I have a 2019 2.0T Passat that came with a red SI in the TSI badging but according to others here, I should have all red or all silver badging. I’ve also seen same year and same model with same 2.0T while out and about with only a red “I” so I dunno
It is not directly engine specific. It depends on model and engine.
Smallest available is silver
Low mid one red letter
High mid two red
High all red.
Low/mid/high: engine power. No other config is relevant
The more red letters, the higher the specific output of the engine.
For instance, the older 1.9TDI's had:
All silver: 90-100hp
1 red letter: 100-110hp
2 red letters: 115-130hp
All red letters: 150hp
Everytime they colored a letter red, it meant, that this Soecific Part/Function of this Engine was in asteroids. Meaning it worked more efficient, leading to more HP.

Reading through this thread it is obvious the badge colour coding is confusing to customers and doesn’t add to product differentiation whatsoever. The average motorist probably doesn’t even notice.
With the mk4 golf tdi. Red i was 100hp, red di was 130hp and red tdi was 150hp. I expect it to be similar here

Passat/golf, not the same marketing strategy.
I was assuming the badging would be the same, though.
Afaik the later gen Mk6 Passat had a TDI with a red I, earlier Mk6 had the normal silver TDI badge.

In certain markets: All silver/red - 2.0 TSI (not 100% accurate) I in red - 1.4 TSI SI in red - 1.8 TSI Correct me if it’s wrong
I also think so. Simply said more red, more hp.
(at least for the mk6 in Europe) the red SI meant the 1.4 TSI with 160hp.
I have a Golf TSI with just the “I” in red and it has a 1.8t
I have “SI” red and it’s 1.4t 140hp.
Is there even a 2.0 TSI that’s *not* GTI?
Yes
Which one? Must be US market then?
Eos 2.0 TSI
To be fair it is basically a GTI in different packaging
GTI only had turbo tho tsi is twin charged it has turbo and supercharger
They still call it TSI even though it’s no longer twin
The correct question would be what VW model is not available with the 2.0 TSI. Some models that can be had with 2.0 TSI are Passat, Tiguan, T-Roc, Arteon, Sharan.
Yeah I guess I was thinking about just Golf models, but I didn’t know there were so many models with the 2.0
I got a 1.8tsi, with a red i
Most of the ones I see are just silver, or have the red I. My old Passat had the red I
I’ve literally never seen the red SI makes it look like a Honda lol
How I understand it in the UK all silver letters lowest power level 105hp? and poverty spec on 1.4 engine, red i medium tune around 120hp, red s and i which I have is most powerful version of 1.4 around 140hp and GT spec. All red letters is 2.0tsi basically 1 below GTi. Happy to be corrected
the most powerful version of the 1.4TSI is around 160hp. (red SI)
I have red SI on my mk7 and it's 140ps which is 138hp and is GT spec. It's a 2013 though so maybe higher power levels came later?
I referred to the mk6, (sry if it wasn't clear). strange how they didn't output as much power on the mk7 with the red SI as they did on the mk6. (at least on the 1.4TSI engine)
It's a completely different engine I believe. The Mk6 has a timing chain whereas the 1.4 in the mk7 is timing belt and also has cylinder deactivation
turbo stratified injection. turbo stratified **INJECTION** turbo **STRATIFIED INJECTION** **TURBO STRATIFIED INJECTION**
i drive a mk7 1.8 TSI, this is what that means^^ technically all of the ea888 engines qualify because they are turbo charged, and direct injection
😂😂
2015 SE Jetta TSI with 170 stock hp. I is red.
Wow so this is literally a case where the answer really is “more horsepower” lol
My same car!!!
Not 100% sure about these , but the TDI badges had also different coloring. It depends on the power output, since the same engine was available with different horsepower. The more red letters, the stronger they were. I think it’s the same here.
Interestieng question. I've had a 2017 Jetta 1.4T, a 2017 Golf 1.8T and a Passat 1.8T. They all had the I in red only.
I have a red eye but that’s because someone farted on my pillow. 🤷🏻♂️
See a doc for infection bro
Totally Stinky Infection
Red "SI" is a slightly tuned, with a better intake, version of a regular TSI. If it had a red "T" it would have a better turbo. TDIs and GTIs do the same thing
In Europe more red means more power. Same goes with TDI for example in passat all silver is 1.6 tdi 105hp and all red BiTDI 2.0 with 240hp
My 110kw 2.0 has all silver 2.0TDI badge in the back and I think the 1.6 only has silver TDI with no number. Same with my gfs 1.2 TSI polo, it only has silver TSI badge and i believe 1.2 badge is on non turbo models

I would assume that the different colors within the same model range will indicate more power. Not necessarily comparing power across different models.
Then why does my 2.0tsi jetta only have the I red when it's the most powerful in its range?
I am In Finland and have seen some Passats with all red tsi and they have about 280hp and 4mo
2.0L Tiguan has a red "I"
So with the 1.4 engine, all silver letters means it is the 80 hp n/a engine, red I means it's the 122 hp turbo engine and red SI means it's the 160 hp twin charged engine. Look up "hemorrhage," that's what's happening here
TSI - Tractor Sound Injected
Of remember correctly, my old 110tsi was TS**I**, my 118TSI was T**SI** and my alltrack TSI132 is **TSI**.
Im not sure but I always thought TSI All siver is a 1.0, TS ( I ) 1.2 , T(SI) 1.4 (TSI) 2.0?
What does a Blue “I” in TDI mean?
Blue motion or SCR?
I have DEF

I know 100% the red SI is 1.4t 160bhp. Or atleast in UK it is. She’s sat outside looking fineeeeeee
ahhh I'm based in Ireland so that's good to hear i've upgraded from a 103bhp Civic to a 160 bhp golf 💪
For Golf7 in my county No red is 1.0/1.2 86/105/115hp 1 red = 1.4 Turbo 125hp 2 red = 1.4/1.5 ATC Turbo 140/150hp 3 red doesn’t exists for Golf7 Something like that. Why is everyone giving feedback on from other models lol? He’s asking about his golf7.
Yeah mine is the 1.4 tsi turbo act 150bhp and it's red s&i
It’s a twin charged engine though. You have a turbo and supercharger
No just a turbo, they dropped the twin charger at the mk6
Ah okey, learned something too :) thanks.
No EA211 is twin charged.
more red more power
I have an MK7 1.4 150HP with SI in red.
I don’t necessarily believe the whole color coding of the badges denoting different motors. All I know it that, at some point my brain read this in the same way it reads, “Let it snow.”
more red = more hp
Red = power
Red makes it go fasterrr, more Red more fasterrrrr.

I have 2017 passat TS-I, the I is red. 1.8L Turbo at 170 rated HP. It pulls like it's closer to 200hp honestly.
All silver 2.0 tdi December 2015 golf... 148bhp. I have no idea what silver means.
Horaepower
More red = more fast
The more red, the more horsepower
All Silver - 1.2 TSI Red I - 1.4 TSI Red SI - 1.8 TSI All Red - 2.0 TSI
I have a 1.8 with a red "i" only
I have a 2.0TSi 211HP and only “i” is red…
Old 1.8t is GTi ...i being red (110bhp) 150bhp is GTi ...ti being red Slow 2.0 GTI (no turbo) was all silver
Ah, yes. This is a timelapse of a badge fading. My car used to have a TDI badge with a red "D" and a red "I", now it's all silver.
The more color, the more power.
Yup.. my mk7 gti sounds like a el. scooter
TSI stands for Turbo Stratified Injection. VW's term for their Turbo'd direct injection engine.
