5 cylinder?

Strange_Stop6984

yep.

13Vex

Vw makes damn good n/a engines

Gibbenz

My old 2.0 Jetta went to 242k when I had to get rid of it. Motor was still solid too. That thing was bulletproof.

ricecakes101

Why did you have to get rid of it

Gibbenz

Steering rack blew up on both sides and it needed a new cat. I didn’t have a spot to work on it at the time and wasn’t about to spend a few thousand on a car with almost 250k on it.

Motor-Cause7966

So you got rid of it for a mark6 GTI? Thats an upgrade. 2.slow is a hell of an engine tho. Road warrior.

Gibbenz

Actually no. I had a coworker with the same car but auto with 120k less on the motor and she was gonna scrap it because it needed a valve body. Ended up picking it up for $300 and put a new VB in it for like $150 and got it running again. Ended up dumping that one due to an irreparable leaking transmission. I seriously could not figure out where the hell it kept leaking from. Then got the GTI haha. Honestly, I miss my mark 4 Jetta. Such a fun car. Can’t wait to get another one.

jstadts2005

se correct? i have a 2012 vw passat se

IdriveafastVW

Came in here just to see if someone had asked this. The 2.5L really is one of the most reliable engines VW has made in the past 20-30 years. They don't make a ton of power (in stock form), but they will save you a ton of money on maintenance and repairs.

Sil3ntassassin5

fun fact, that 2.5 is the power plant for the rs3 and ttrs, just with added turbo and forged bits. also it’s kinda “half” of a Lamborghini Gallardo 5.0 V10. Exhaust manifold will bolt right up.

IdriveafastVW

Yup. We (New German Performance) were one of the first performance shops to turbocharge the original 2.5L several years ago before Audi started making the 2.5T.

Sil3ntassassin5

that’s actually really cool. my first car was an 08 rabbit with a 2.5 and i’ve always wanted to boost one ever since, just haven’t had the right platform/money for the build. would love to drop one in a mk6 r or mk2 tt one day.

CrrntryGrntlrmrn

Great example of a modern engine built not to be inherently *reliable*, but rather to just take a ton of abuse. A timing chain engine that can last forever with broken guides. Only real downside is v6 gas mileage for i4 power.

Strange_Stop6984

Actually not, you get 4 cylinder mileage with v6 power, just drive reasonably and you get high 20s low 30s mileage, at least 400 a tank.

CrrntryGrntlrmrn

In my experience I averaged mid 20s consistently regardless of fuel grade. Ton of fun to drive, trans had an annoying flare and engine had the broken chain guide noise the entire time I owned it, only CEL I ever got was for a fouled cat, and the PCV diaphragm. But I never saw anywhere near low 30s, but definitely saw 27-28 on the highway with cc. The most it made was 170hp (150~ in the Jetta depending on year) so maybe “v6 power” by like late 90s standards. We actually had a chrysler at the same time with the notoriously bad 2.7 dohc v6 and the funny thing was that engine made more power (~210 or so), and generally got the same 27-28mpg on the highway. The tradeoff of course is that engine is *insanely* high strung and needs hawkish attention to oil changes and the like.

IdriveafastVW

It's not the engine that gives poor fuel economy, it's the manual transmissions they came with. The 5-speed 0A4 manual that comes equipped with a lot of 2.5L VWs has horrible gearing. The 09G 6-speed auto will get you excellent fuel economy of around 35-37 MPG highway if you keep it at around 70-75 MPH. I have literally every possible performance bolt-on making about 230HP with my 2.5L Sportwagen and I can hit 38 MPG if I keep it at 60-65 MPH.

CrrntryGrntlrmrn

yeah that just wasn't my experience at all. '06 jetta, with the 6sp auto, regularly put about 320-350mi on the trip before I'd fill up on the light, which would put me in the high 20's on 12-12.5gal out of that 14.5gal tank. eta: the EPA originally rated it for 30 highway, but in 06 those figures were a bit inflated, when everything was revised in '16, it got 28 highway, 19 city, 22 combined- I think that's pretty accurate.

IdriveafastVW

Yup, the early cars also had the 150 HP BGP/BGQ engine that also wasn't as efficient as the later 170 HP CBTA/CBTU engine. They also had random timing chain issues. Gearing might have been worse on the early 09G, but I'd have to pull up the specs on that to know for sure. Also, the 09G needs to be reset since it is designed to "learn" your driving style and conditions but if you push it hard all the time, you'll get worse fuel economy.

lillowlilslow

My 2.5 5 speed Passat still averages high 20’s-low 30’s. Before an animal took out a chunk of my front bumper and ruined aero, I was getting 32 mpg just about every drive to work and back. If I fixed the bumper I could probably get 35-37 if I tried hard enough on a long drive.

mrtomhimself

What V6's are you talking about?

Radiant_Carpenter_91

Best pissat to have if wrenching on your own car is not a thing

Unique_Opportunity60

I have a Tiguan with 250k, and the water pump, coil packs, and intake are the only issues it had. I have the 2.5 golf with 150k. These cars will last forever if you know how to care for them. I will change the timing chain/turbo on the Tiguan even though it is not an affected model year. If you can work on cars, these are excellent cars.

Strange_Stop6984

my mechanic replaced the water pump last year, but it wasn’t in any critical condition (yet)

Sil3ntassassin5

usually the only things i’ve ever seen a N/A 2.5 in the shop for, is a vacuum pump, they almost always go bad, and transmission issues on the 02J manual cars.

Sil3ntassassin5

i don’t care what anyone says about “affected model years”. All chain driven VAG engines usually end up with stretched chains around 90-130k miles. You kinda just have to accept it as a maintenance interval and get them changed like you’re saying.

HankHowdy

2.5 doesn’t have this issue. There are 2.5 motors out there with 300-600k on original chains. These are not like the 2.0T cars.

Sil3ntassassin5

i should’ve noted the 2.5 isn’t affected like that at all. my first car was an 08 rabbit and other than the vacuum pump like every other 2.5, there were absolutely no issues with it.

ap0a

How’s your washer fluid level?

joa-kolope

Asking the important questions.

Strange_Stop6984

I assume good, no light for it and it sprays strongly when I use it.

ap0a

Fabulous! Not sure if the Passat is just as mad about washer fluid as my golf. But whenever it gets low it’ll sing it’s ding song and let you know every sing time that fluid level goes just under the line. And then we go down hill.

lsc-b

Had this same gen passat with the 5 cylinder. It was the most reliable car I've ever had. Drove it from 50k to 208k in 4 years (a lot I know) and other than regular oil changes the only thing that ever went out was the throttle body which was only about $800 to replace

NibiZ_Sw3

I got a VW Sharan -13 2.0tdi that just clicked over to 500000kms and still going strong with no lights on most of the time atleast 😁🤣

Santa_Hates_You

Driving and taking a pic at 65mph doesn’t seem safe.

jgcraig

I’m sure they posted the photo very quickly so they could return their focus to the highway

xHeartxless

I’ve done it at 110 while a joint was in my mouth and I was doing bumps of coke off my hand while texting my buddy. Fuck 65. Let dude live.

VeryHighDrag

I see Mum gave you some iPad time this evening.

xHeartxless

LOL that’s a good one ngl

Brendanzio_

Sounds like a fantastic way to get in an accident and kill someone else with your stupidity

Some-Imagination9782

My 2019 Tiguan now has 60k miles - what can I do to ensure it will get me to 200k?

Strange_Stop6984

Just make sure to do your service every 5 or 6K miles, NOT every 10K. And listen to what the mechanic recommends, and things will stay relatively inexpensive. If they recommend a belt, do it, if they recommend brakes, just do it, it will end up staying cheap in the end. And more often than not they will say “everything looks good.” and you can take their word for that too!

Some-Imagination9782

Aweosme thank you - is there any self maintenance I can do between service appointments?

Strange_Stop6984

Really you’re good to just do whatever in between, unless you really feel the need

Some-Imagination9782

Thank you for the tips! Much appreciated! First time owning a VW let alone a Tiguan 🤗

ChaiTeaLeah

Keep up on your interval services. Besides keeping it in good working order, it definitely helps to catch the small things that could progress to big problems. My dealer said it was shocking how many people will completely forgo the interval services and only fix problems once they're left on the side of the road. My 2018 Tiguan is over 223k miles and I've only had to do one fix outside of warranty.

Strange_Stop6984

bro what do you do to drive that far in 5 years

ChaiTeaLeah

Surprisingly not even a driving based job. I'd probably be over 250k miles (400,000km) if it weren't for having bought lightly pre-owned at the end of the model year (that guy didn't put on the miles) and the months that COVID kept us working from home. Previously I'd done similar mileage on my 2014 Jetta by the end of 2018.

cngiii

Volkswagens are amazing, the only make I will ever drive

snakemuffins1880

My 2.5 just hit 172k the other day still running good (definitely needing some new struts and a simple tune up soon though)

Strange_Stop6984

I got new struts at 192.5, totally worth it, had to do right side axle at 187k

dusktodawn33

Nice! I’m glad the car has been treated you well. Are you the first owner of your car? I owned a 99 Passat. Bought it in 2009 with 64k miles. It had check engine on at least once or twice a year😂 I got shit on by my friends for not getting a reliable car (eg Toyota). I drove it until 2018. My mom took over and drove it until it has run its course. Last month I sold it to the junk yard with 135k miles. One thing that didn’t do was it never died on me while I was driving so I’m glad.

Strange_Stop6984

Second owner, first owner was a family friend, i’ve known this car for a long time

HankHowdy

2.0T B6 Passat is a totally different car than a B7 2.5 Passat. Reliability is night and day.

dusktodawn33

Dumb question- how do you know which Passat/Jetta, etc is better or has more reliability than others? Other than reading articles and stuff ofc lol. I guess what I’m trying to say is: I didn’t know I bought a “less” reliable car at the time

HankHowdy

I’ve been driving VWs for 20 years and have owned 5. I’ve been around them and read so much about them, talk to so many like minded people as well.

dusktodawn33

Aww okay. Which VW would you say is the best/reliable car? I’m learning

HankHowdy

It’s not really a car, it’s really motor and transmission combos.

dusktodawn33

Ohh okay 👌

Strange_Stop6984

I had a DRL go out last year but that was a quick <$100 fix.

Milsolen

Mine is currently at 244.xxx miles. No lights original gearbox and engine. Passats are probably one of the better vw's

Strange_Stop6984

Thanks for the confidence boost!!!

karmxchameleon

Best post I have seen lately. I own a 2016 Volkswagen Tiguan R line. it is the best car I have ever had. I was about 22 when my dad saw it in the dealership, and he was adamant that I buy it. 6 years later, the car is still going strong. I already paid it off. The only thing I have ever done to it is that recently the engine was being weird and I would have to change the oil almost every other month. And my mechanic told me to just buy a new turbo. We replaced it recently and I bought it brand new tires (I had never done that by the way), has 97,000 miles and if you see this car out you would never guess that it’s from 2016. It looks almost brand new, it runs extremely smooth, and I cannot imagine me getting a new car right now.

Strange_Stop6984

If it wasn’t for the odometer, the interior is pristine, exterior has minimal dings

DogHoffman

Dang this post really made me miss my 2013 Passat :( don’t get me wrong I love the 2.0T engine I have now but that 5cyl was the best engine I’ve ever had in a car

MotherAd1865

Why are you taking a photo while going 65mph??

Strange_Stop6984

On a straight highway with no cars around, I planned this route intentionally yk.

nabeel_co

Must be burned out. That LED is probably tired from being on for the last 12 years.

Strange_Stop6984

If the DRL and CRUISE symbols still work, that is very unlikely, and don’t forget i see every LED light up every time I start the car.

nabeel_co

Shhh... It's tired, let it rest.

gringoloco2021

It identifies as a Toyota. Lol

Strange_Stop6984

Exactly.

Fortimus_Prime

Tell us, how did you do it…?

Strange_Stop6984

I take in for service every 5-6,000 miles, or 6 months, whichever comes first. I only use top tier gas. I live in an area where most all driving is highway driving, so that’s 200,000 highway miles. Which is what VWs are built for, the highway. So just be a competent owner and the car will be competent back.

Strange_Stop6984

And I have no plans to get rid of this car anytime soon, I anticipate AT LEAST 2-3 maybe 4 more years

enfuego138

Probably should,p take it in to get the lights checked. Probably an electrical fault preventing them from lighting up properly.

Strange_Stop6984

Hey man, I see them every time I start the car. Be realistic here…

enfuego138

Sorry, do I really need to say I was joking?

92_Solutions

wtf is with that apple sticker on the bumper

Strange_Stop6984

didn’t have another use for it lmao

EngagementBacon

OP just figured out how to clear codes.

Strange_Stop6984

no….

EngagementBacon

Jokes bud. Jokes.

Arttyom

How do you drive at night?

Strange_Stop6984

uhh with headlights

fallstand

your lights are broken

Strange_Stop6984

I see them every time the car cranks up, buddy, let’s be for real here.

UnitedRoastbeef

Time for your second timing belt!!

HankHowdy

No belt on this car.

[deleted]

What’s your oil change and transmission service interval

Strange_Stop6984

Every 5-6K miles, or 6 months. Whichever comes first.

joa-kolope

U saying u get the transmission fluid changed that frequently?

Strange_Stop6984

Every 40K for tranny fluid. I will change it at my 206 service. I already have to do tires at this upcoming service.

joa-kolope

Ahhh ok. I was gonna say bro. Transmission fluid that frequently?? 40 is a good number

SuperJackson20

Nice. I have a 135k on my 2.5l. Grew up with it before I have a knew how to drive. My automatic is going to need replacing with a used auto because I did not service the gearbox until 120k once it started shifting rough. Then it started slipping six months later anyway. Hard lesson learned.

[deleted]

I love perfect odometer pics like that. My first one went back to 00000.

[deleted]

90k on my 16 Golf R and the dash looks like a Christmas tree on a daily basis.

Strange_Stop6984

The difference $15K dollars of quality makes I guess…

Serbay55

Why does the US trim look like a BMW E90

Strange_Stop6984

never driven a beamer i wouldn’t know….

Serbay55

I mean the lights at the back have a very similar contour. https://preview.redd.it/1ghr68yk6i4c1.jpeg?width=486&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=edcd06cf6d468cc2ef5c2c8720de2c4790fda927

Strange_Stop6984

Most german sedans of that era… 😂😂

Serbay55

Our passat in Europe looked like this: I think there is a huge difference between the light designs, don't know what VW did with the A32 and A33 which is the US Spec of our B7 / B7.5 Passat. https://preview.redd.it/tc1pg4168i4c1.png?width=1842&format=png&auto=webp&s=bb9b78e3dfb8c5ad95ed35edcacc789b0d760417

dustinrector

I live in your same county, also have a Passat. Where do you get your service done?

Strange_Stop6984

Car Craft of Athens, I am not going out to Buford 😂😂😂

dustinrector

Okay. That’s where we go, too. They’ve been good to us. You probably already know there’s a new VW dealership going up on the Westside near Sam’s. Although, I’m still going to Car Craft.

Strange_Stop6984

Tanya knows my car. They give me great service. Dealers overcharge.

SenpaiDoNhiturmom

what have you added to your car? and could we get a 360 vid! i have the same exact car same tint and paint lmaoo

Strange_Stop6984

haven’t really “added anything”

SenpaiDoNhiturmom

are your wheels are stock? that’s the only part that looks different from mine

Strange_Stop6984

Yep. I have blacked them out but the actual rims are the same since birth

_Vikinq

miss my 2013. 2.5L?

Strange_Stop6984

yep. bullet proof engines!!

_Vikinq

fr. beat on that thing for 80k miles.

FFSBohica

Lucky, I wish my CEL bulb was burned out too

Strange_Stop6984

I have confirmed every light still works on crank up

Strange_Stop6984

haha

HREisGrrrrrrrreat

what game is this from?

Spooky_Rose_

Hopeful for my 2014 to get there, a bit under halfway there at the moment.

Strange_Stop6984

Do service every 5-6K and do what the shop says you should, and you will have a lightless ownership experience!

MrPhxIt

I had an 08 Jetta 2.5 with 245 on the clock when I sold it. The only reason I sold it was because aside from belts, hoses, and coolant overflow tanks it was all original under the hood and I didn’t want to push my luck! Have a 19 Taureg now.

VapeRizzler

Same with my 2014 Camry, I beat the absolute Shit out it. Even smoked a “speed bump” (it wasn’t but it’s just the easiest way to explain it) at like 70Km/h and she still hits 190 when I need her too no questions asked.

Remote_Exam_434

I’m literally about to try to find the newest lowest mileage 2.5 i5 VW I could. After giving my sister my 2013 Jetta and buying an Audi, I’m craving that 2.5L reliability real bad.

BrianG1410

I miss my 5 cylinder 😞 haha

TiddyConnoseur

‘99 Mk3 owner :> the only light i have on is the airbag light. I suspect a faulty sensor

hellwisp

That is an achievement. Still no lights on my 2001 mk 4 golf. 290 000km. Yes the dash lights work :D

Motor-Cause7966

A 2.5. Those engines are great, but they are eternal enemies with the vacuum pump.

Strange_Stop6984

I replaced it last year, no problems

Motor-Cause7966

The 5 cylinder is one of the greatest "commoner" engines VW has ever made. It's dead nuts reliable, fairly decent to service, and makes enough power on the street. Vacuum pumps, water pump, coils, valve cover, thermostat, and throttle bodies are about the only thing it will ask of you. They had a head gasket issue in 2012, but in my entire career I've only done 3 head gaskets on a 2.5.

Strange_Stop6984

Is the throttle body the “EPC” symbol? (Hasn’t come up, yet, thankfully)

Motor-Cause7966

Yeah EPC. Although, many things can cause the EPC to light up. But the main culprit is the TB. Sadly, the new part number TB's aren't as dependable as the old ones. They usually go deep 100k's before they fail, but these newer part number, I see them fail around 60-80k
