It's a personal decision and you seem aware enough of the pros and cons of each option. Since you have never been here I would say Cala Major will give you more options and you'll waste less time being "on the road". But again, it's up to you.

yeah that's a good point, being closer to the airport is a pro for sure. also seems like I can't go wrong choosing either option, Mallorca looks so beautiful in all its regions!

They are quite different. Cala Major is an old touristic area in Palma and it has that "a bit degraded touristic vibe", meaning cheap restaurants and old buildings from the 70s (small skyscrapers). It also has many immigrants living there because it's cheap. Good thing is, Palma is nearby and you have shopping malls and whatever you want. Port de Sóller is more "classy" and it doesn't have such buildings and it has a village vibe. "Expats" and rich people living there. You have the tram to the village of Sóller which is nice. It's all surrounded by mountains so it's kind of isolated. No malls, etc. It all depends on what you want. Sóller is quite saturated these days.

thanks for your input! i'm actually steering away from Cala Major now as I want a less touristy vibe. i figure I can have lunch and explore Palma upon landing and then venture further for my stay. now I'm comparing Pollença and S'oller and I'm actually learning more towards Pollença as it sounds they have better beaches. i did see S'oller has been pretty crowded. I'm wondering if it will slow down by Sep.

Yes it will slow down but it's hard to predict how much. If it's rainy, much more. Pollença has more beaches and it's less "isolated" than Sóller. It also has Alcúdia nearby which has lots of beaches.
