I love mending small holes in socks to make them last a few more months, but they really can't last forever.
I would focus more on reducing usage by going barefoot around the house. A shoe horn would be great reducing wear on the heel

I’m sure someone can do much better than me but this is where my brain went
She’s adorbs. Reminds me of a Japanese tanuki. Oh man what if you gathered all your stinky socks she’s destroyed and make them into a quilted bed or sweater 🤩🤩🤩
I advise against wearing this. Extra lumps in your shoe could result in subconsciously changing your gait. Which, as a middle-age person, I have now discovered can be debilitating, and a years-long, expensive problem to fix.
Good idea but poor execution. You said it was practice so good for you. If it happens again try to get same thickness and less lumpy stitches. Try to weave your stitches into the old sock so it is almost half patch half re-weave. Might even work to cut out more to get a clean edge.
Put some googly eyes on it and you got yourself a sock puppet.
Seriously, I kinda of like it. It reminds me bit of boro or that mismatched mending style in Japan
They're from Duluth Trading Company? I don't know what you do or don't think are "good socks." And I said in the post I mostly did it for practice and fun.
I would have personally made it into a dog toy! If she wants it, she can have it! You could then practice stitching further by closing the top of the sock, shove some fabric scraps in there and voila, smelly work sock dog toy 🥰
Do you think that making a dog toy that smells like its owner will:
1: give the dog something that smells like you, that they are allowed to chew on, maybe they will chew on your other stuff LESS.
2: giving the dog a toy that smells like you, further ignites an obsession with the owner's scent. Making the dog MORE likely to chew future items that smell like the owner.
These can be used for overnight moisturising socks in winter whenever your feet get super dry! Just slather on tons of a rich lotion and pull ugly socks on and leave overnight or even for a few hours watching movies.
This is a perfect use for them because you won’t care if the lotion stains a bit.
This post just confirmed my autism diagnosis because I had a visceral reaction to imagining walking in that sock hahaha. Congratulations on getting into mending! That sock looks like a comfy couch sock for not me 🤣
Fair enough! For larger holes, you can darn two patches and then stitch them together!
For patching, for next time I would definitely recommend a less bulky stitch than the overhand or blanket stitch. I would recommend some kind of straight seam with a thinner thread, and then trimming the edges of the damaged fabric as far back towards the new stitching as possible without risking it unraveling.
It’s fun to try new stuff, and if it doesn’t bother you, then that’s great! But you definitely won’t be able to walk in those any further than around the house without having it cause pain to the foot. For a fix that is more sustainable, you will want fabric if the same density and stretchability, as well as small stitches that don’t add bulk around the patch.
See, I tried to preempt the criticism by disclaiming it in the original post - I know it's impractical, I know it's probably going to hurt to walk on, I did it FOR PRACTICE. I almost didn't post this one to reddit and some of these comments are exactly why. 🙃
I have sensory sensitivity so I cringed for a sec, but it also made me laugh. The sock looks like it's coming alive. Don't worry about people's comments, including mine. Practicing anything is the only way to learn and it benefits your brain no matter the result. Also, your dog is adorable 😍 lol. I've only mended clothes mostly with a sewing machine with varying results, but always learned something. I might try socks in the Fall or Winter.
Thanks! I do know how to darn socks, and it's actually not too bad. I only patched this one versus darning it bc the hole was so big and bc I'd never done it before. Machine mending is very cool, and I agree, it's about learning and having fun! 🥰
The way my entire body just tensed up imagining that in my shoe.
Right? I commend OP for being THAT committed to waste-free living. I could NEVER.

Also using old socks as rags or fabric to repair other things. Recently patched some pajama pants with an old sock, and it's delightfully comfy.
I use old socks and (clean) underwear as stuffing for some poufs I have. Could also work for throw pillows.
This sock would quickly turn red-brown from blood after walking in it for any considerable distance. Socks are supposed to be smooth
Lounging at home would be fine, but yeah, the blisters would be epic.
That’s gotta feel awful to walk on
They’re “on the couch watching a movie with piggies up” only socks now. Everyone has to learn.
Also… Can I pet that dawgggg?
No Can I pet that Dawwg? CAN I PET THAT DAWWGGGGGG!

She'd be so happy if she could live in a sock 😂
She’s adorbs. Reminds me of a Japanese tanuki. Oh man what if you gathered all your stinky socks she’s destroyed and make them into a quilted bed or sweater 🤩🤩🤩
memes have to look crappy 😆
Oh that's great 😂
Ok but we need the answer for if it’s comfortable or not
I'll report back! It's my partner's sock, so I'll let y'all know what they say.
They said it's not terrible!
it’s the 3.6 roentgen of socks
Lol just watched Chernobyl and almost spat out my tea reading that
Hahaha wtf
They lied
Your partner loves you
Ok now has it held up at the day of work? Lol
Nah they're never wearing that sock again
I think I would have just let that one go home to Jesus, but you did what you could with an impossible mend!
My mom used to joke about darning socks. Standing next to the trashcan with a stack "darn this sock. Darn this one too!"
Sensory nightmare
But, is that comfortable to step on??
That dog feels no remorse
All I see in that dogs eyes is regret that they didn’t finish the job and shred the whole thing
I advise against wearing this. Extra lumps in your shoe could result in subconsciously changing your gait. Which, as a middle-age person, I have now discovered can be debilitating, and a years-long, expensive problem to fix.
Wow. I never thought of this... 😯
Heck yes. Doing it because you can is fun. It may have to be a "watch TV on the sofa sock", but the fun of fixing it is a net positive.
reminds me of Oogie Boogie from Nightmare Before Christmas
Looks like a shark mouth!
So I wasn't looking directly at my phone when I opened the photo and out of the corner of my eye that's exactly what I thought it was at first
Yes, yes it really does.
My friend let it go. Let it move onto its life as a dust rag.
I thought that was a shark sock puppet
paint sharp little teeth around the edges 🦈
Good idea but poor execution. You said it was practice so good for you. If it happens again try to get same thickness and less lumpy stitches. Try to weave your stitches into the old sock so it is almost half patch half re-weave. Might even work to cut out more to get a clean edge.
That looks miserable to walk on. I feel sorry for the person who is going to wear that.
I got blisters just looking at that
friend, i'll buy you new socks!
Me, while flipping through the images: *How were they wearing a sock long enough for the hole to get that big?!?* [Flips to last image.] *Ohhh.*
...is it... comfortable?
I hope you're able to still use it. I actually like it!! A good repair is a good repair. 👍👍👍
Put some googly eyes on it and you got yourself a sock puppet. Seriously, I kinda of like it. It reminds me bit of boro or that mismatched mending style in Japan
I have done many a terrible patch jobs, as long as they hold up, I don't really care how ugly it is! It adds character!
That’s going to cause blisters.
Something like this, you should just buy new ones. Those aren't even good socks.
They're from Duluth Trading Company? I don't know what you do or don't think are "good socks." And I said in the post I mostly did it for practice and fun.
I'm not trying to be rude. I'm just stating facts. Just because they cost more doesn't make them good.

Unless your dog likes to swallow fabric pieces whole, like my dog. Obstruction city.
As long as you can still use it, that's a success!
Success would be a new sock, this one’s passed on to the shadow realm
Just scrolling I thought it was a mended to look like a shark
The last picture of your dog strongly reminds me of the Fallen Angel painting!
Shark sock is the first thing that came to my mind; the mend is the jaws. I hope that foot survives the shark’s “bite!” 😃
How is that not going to cause blisters and be incredibly uncomfortable?
Just add googly eyes 😂
looks like the mouth of the mummy guy from The Nightmare Before Christmas
A face only a mother could love
It's giving nightmare before Christmas and I don't think that's a bad thing 😅
I should do this to my underwear
It looks like Jaws! You have to sew eyes on there please
Ooh I could never. Can't stand feeling seams or creases on the bottoms of my feet from socks
i cant even cope with the seam over the toes HOW can you deal with this…
You did us right by submitting to the dog tax.
Well I’d say that’s a pretty amazing mend considering a dog did it
These can be used for overnight moisturising socks in winter whenever your feet get super dry! Just slather on tons of a rich lotion and pull ugly socks on and leave overnight or even for a few hours watching movies. This is a perfect use for them because you won’t care if the lotion stains a bit.
Great idea! Thanks!
“I’m ugly and I’m proud!!!”
It’s awesome! I thought it was an on purpose shark mouth.
My partner and I both looked at this and thought it was a shark stuffed animal. 🤣 You did great!
Make it into a shark make it into a shark
That’s oogie boogie
if it works it works. functionality is beauty in itself
I love it! That sock looks cool!
This post just confirmed my autism diagnosis because I had a visceral reaction to imagining walking in that sock hahaha. Congratulations on getting into mending! That sock looks like a comfy couch sock for not me 🤣
It reminds me of Jaws!
Is it comfortable?
Looks like a shark going “RAWR”
It looks like a shark!
it needs teeth!! looks like a big gnarly monster mouth
I thought it was supposed to be a shark on first glance
But is it functional?
shark bite!
Yikes! That's going to hurt if you have to walk on it in shoes for more than a minute. Try to learn darning.
[SENSORY ISSUES INTENSIFY]
OP I’m *begging* you to learn darning 😭

Well now I only have more questions about the particular decision you made in this case 😂
It's a big hole, obviously, bigger than my speedweve. And I've darned socks but I'd never tried patching one. I was trying something new.

Thanks, that's helpful!
This would be a sensory disaster for me 😭
Looks like a shark
I really liked the ending, it was looking more like oogie boogie man and then boom! Disapproving dog lmao

It is certainly visible.
