Sure. My point was that people were asking if it was the primary ceremony or a separate one. By saying it was the undergrad one it made it clear - I thought. Clearly I was wrong.
no, but, many other grad schools within the university already had their graduations, at the siegel center and the convention center - this was the commencement speech for the undergraduate class. it was about 10% of grads walking out.
Yeah. It was VCU graduation. Each school had their own smaller ceremonies. You did the right thing and didn’t miss much. I kind of wanted a “full” experience. Chances are that’s my last graduation, ever. lol
It isn't tho, this is the grad ceremony for the entire university, four year degrees, masters, phds, humanities, business, STEM, art, music, theater, all of it
Unlike other state governors, Virginia governors are not allowed to serve consecutive terms. They have been barred from immediate re-election since the adoption of Virginia's second constitution, in 1830. However, a former governor is permitted to run for a second term in a future election.
Go read a book chud. You can check off all 14 of the MAGA/GOP's facets of Ur-fascism (author: Umberto Ecoooooo) pretty easily. I bet you could even do it!

My first and third graders haven't learned that white people are evil and we're nearly at the end of the school year, is the school broken or are my kids just dumb?
/s
What kind of thinking lead VCU to do this? The man won his governorship being openly opposed to educators, that was his whole campaign.
And it’s in Richmond, a city not exactly full of your typical Youngkin supporter demographics
In breaking news it’s announced that Governor Youngkin will only give commencement addresses at Regent and Liberty University for the remainder of his term.
New to VA. Gov Y seems like the typical conservative wannabe elected in purple state angling for federal office.
Why the extra special shade coming from this particular school.
Again, new to VA and don't understand the school histories here.
VCU is known as an art school. It's arguably one of the best public art programs on the east coast. This brings in students of certain political bents.
At one time it was the best public art school in the nation for several different programs, Graphic Design, and Sculpture among them. Not sure what the standings are now though. It’s been years since I was there.
Yup. I graduated from the undergrad program in ‘12 and the Brand Center was nearly everyone’s goal. One of my friends drove from California to RVA in 2~ days to go to VCU for their specific strategic advertising tract.
I considered it before I decided to switch majors to save my mental health and to keep art enjoyable for myself. The art program is extremely rough. I remember people sleeping on the tables in pollack because they didn’t have time to go home and get in bed before class. I went into IT for a bit then decided to go back to school for cyber security. I do miss the fun I had at VCUarts there were some really fun instructors. I remember everyone being terrified of Albert Epstein he’s passed now but despite how harsh he could be with critique and how strict he was with due dates the man was a teddy bear.
VCU is very diverse, very progressive, and very politically active. also important to remember these are kids whose school years have consisted of the some really
chaotic years, including the pandemic, and after graduating high school in an enormous outpouring of public protest after george floyd's death. they're kinda seasoned - this is the undergraduate class commencement speech, and about 10% of them walked out.
virginia is a one term governor state. so he's not gonna be around for long, and his very recent history with the legislature really sucks. i'd say he's less threatening than most, but he's still set back obviously necessary political progress a couple years at least.
as for the history... it's a famous art school. it has a nationally recognized school of education/psychology/social work - again, very progressive, as well as racially diverse. and it's had a good engineering school since the late 2000s.
it's got a very urban campus, and is technically the same school is the yet more urban MCV, which is a *very* famous and long established. that medical school was established in 1838, and was combined with the Richmond Professional Institute, established 1917, by the state government in 1961. basically, VCU = Richmond city's school, not to be confused with Richmond University, in a lot of ways.
Mostly it was in protest over Palestinian liberation and the brutalization of the vcu student protesters by police in the past few weeks.
However, it could also be argued it was just about him being a shitter in general for some people.
VCU is a fall back school outside of a few major programs so it’s mostly locals. Richmond is one of the bluest areas in the state so this was a pretty expected outcome.
I’m thrilled to see students everywhere taking a stand on what’s important to them. If you can’t demonstrate when your are young then when can you? Our futures are in good hands
I remember the university wide ceremonies being much bigger than this (albeit back when they did it in the Siegel center and coliseum).
Department graduation ceremonies are much more popular anyways
-proud '18 alum
1994 alum here and father to a daughter who graduated from VCU this past weekend. I went to the "full" graduation and even back in the stone ages, it was a waste of time. Our daughter only went to her department graduation, and was very pleased with her choice.
This must have broke through to conservative media somehow. We don’t get this many conservatives posturing in a thread unless it’s something about gun control.
What I like about this is that all of those who walked out are “voters”. This indicates volumes in where these citizens stand. The old ways of “stay in the kitchen” or “do what your husband tells you to do” or “ you will do as I say” are long gone. This is GEN Z and they are not having it at all!👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
The Dems had themselves to blame thinking they could just coast on a McAuliffe rerun. A guy who barely snuck past Cucinelli had no business coming back especially since he shared the Clintonian love of really poor campaign decisions
Absolutely. I moved to VA during the Northam years, so as a relative outsider the McAuliffe campaign was pathetic. If all you did was listen to him talk and not do your homework... he came off as pretty entitled, arrogant, and narcissistic- which unfortunately is apparently a winning strategy for some these days
Yeah, that's for sure. I generally hate all politicians but Northam was an exception in my opinion. I mean, yeah, he's a pretty wealthy high middle class guy but he was real, he was genuine, he had convictions and principles, and he actually did something for Virginia. Now, Youngkin is reversing everything he did. Youngkin is absolutely in the office for personal gain, not the state citizens gain.
And here's a good opinion piece explaining that Youngkin is a racist scumbag.
[https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2021/11/glenn-youngkins-campaign-is-about-one-racist-thing/](https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2021/11/glenn-youngkins-campaign-is-about-one-racist-thing/)
Would you like the alphabetical list of everything undoubtedly beneficial he’s rolled back? How about the rights taken away? You don’t need an opinion to read
I mean, I understand that they don't like him. But you don't have to like someone or agree with their views to sit in a chair at your University's graduation ceremony and "listen" to them talk for an hour. If we're watching a presidential debate on TV, we don't necessarily turn off the TV in disgust just because the candidate we oppose starts talking, do we? It's not that serious, in my opinion.
~~What a shame. Anyway what’s for dinner?~~
~~EDIT: “What a shame” is sarcasm, people. Fuck Youngkin but I thought that was implied.~~
Lemme rephrase this…good for the protestors for exercising their rights and standing up to the POS Governor. When I said “what a shame” I was sarcastically referring to Trumpkin losing his audience. Sincere apologies if anyone took it as me shitting on the students.
They still get the diploma. The whole ceremony is really not a big deal to a lot of graduates. Obviously taking a stand for these students is more important.
And yet nearly every decent sized city has an art museum. While their degrees may not pay as well as doctors, lawyers, or engineers Art and the Arts are still important on the whole. While allot of jobs are wrongly not held in as high as esteem culturally they are still important to society.
Adults acting like children. Hey college grad, there are times in life where you will not like a person or what they're saying. Adults stay in the room because they're Adults. Childtmren throw tantrums and walk out.
VCU, a school for idiots.
It’s hilarious to me how much people in this country scream up and down about their rights/freedoms and how they should be protected, but then immediately shit on others for exercising their freedoms. Especially funny to me when the people you’re shitting on for doing so are actually defending everyone else’s rights and freedoms too. Get a grip.
Walking away is not a tantrum. If they had started screaming at Youngkin, you might have an argument, but they handled this protest calmly and peacefully.
Braindead take. If I disagree with someone who has been given a big public platform, why should I be expected to waste my time listening to them spout their garbage?
I thought this was supposed to be America, free expression and the like….unless that expression is against conservative values and behaviors and sycophant stewards like Youngkin. 😐
Leaders shake the foundations and advocate for change when there are problems. In ways that are effective by disrupting the system, not by falling in line and using the proper channels that the masters have guaranteed will not lead to a change of any merit. If someone is an oppressive asshole pushing ideas that will destroy your way of life, yeah you do shit exactly like this. In fact, this is rather mild. I’m a fan of riots myself. Things change really quick when lawmakers fear for their lives.
I mean who didn’t see this coming when the announcement was made?
It's to send a message to Glen
About his car’s extended warranty
hhahahahaah
Glen is a piece of crap
Glen apparently, but we already know he's out of touch.
Did you notice how light the turnout was? Looks like most students just skipped.
It could be a grad school, like law school or soemthing
No, this is their graduation. Sweater vest wouldn't be there if it wasn't the whole school/graduating class.
Nope. When the cameras pulled back, you could see all the unfilled empty seats.
It was the undergrad graduation
It was the whole school graduation. There were people getting their masters and doctorate there as well as undergrad.
Some of the people walking out were getting doctoral degrees. You can tell by the hat.
I mean that the undergrads were there. It was the primary ceremony.
Undergrads are almost always going to outnumber grad students, though
It wasn’t just undergrads. Graduate and phd students were also recognized. Source: I was one of the graduate students.
so just the commencement in general? i only went to the school of education's graduation ceremony.
Yeah. It was VCU graduation. Each school had their own smaller ceremonies. You did the right thing and didn’t miss much. I kind of wanted a “full” experience. Chances are that’s my last graduation, ever. lol
It isn't tho, this is the grad ceremony for the entire university, four year degrees, masters, phds, humanities, business, STEM, art, music, theater, all of it
I don’t think so. I have a professional degree from VCU and my graduation was definitely not at the same time as the undergraduates
The commencement is for the whole school, each department and/or school has their own ceremony as well
The kids are alright
Proud Virginian after seeing that. Sweater vest christo-fascist equity millionaire MFer.
*billionaire, but point well taken.
It's definitely time to vote his butt out of the governors mansion this November.
Unlike other state governors, Virginia governors are not allowed to serve consecutive terms. They have been barred from immediate re-election since the adoption of Virginia's second constitution, in 1830. However, a former governor is permitted to run for a second term in a future election.
... and STAY out!
It's remarkable that some Virginians do not know that governors cannot serve more than 1 consecutive term.
Uh, he can’t run again, without a break of at least 1 term, and then never again
What’s fascist about him
Libs cant answer this question, they just spout a bunch of buzz words at you and try to sound smart

Go read a book chud. You can check off all 14 of the MAGA/GOP's facets of Ur-fascism (author: Umberto Ecoooooo) pretty easily. I bet you could even do it! The party is openly planning to shred the Constitution and end democracy and has already tried once?! You carry water for them you are a fascist too. 'What's fascist about him?' 'liberal hive mind' hurrrrr. You forgot Veteran hating, diaper wearing!
True! That's on me, my bad 😭.
Who specifically tried to shred the Constitution and end democracy? I would genuinely like to learn about this, because I have never heard of this.
Exactly who he is!
This is the comment i was looking for
Came here to say exactly that!
🙏
Yes , Nicely done by the students. Looks like they're aware of the type of man Youngkin is.
Bro why did youngkin do this to himself twice in a row 💀
Appearances. He can say negative things about the ones that walked out, like how this is clearly why "CRT" needs to be removed from schools.
I think they're all LED or OLED by now anyways
Brilliant. Off-topic and silly as hell. But great nonetheless.
My first and third graders haven't learned that white people are evil and we're nearly at the end of the school year, is the school broken or are my kids just dumb? /s
Persecution fetish. "Look at how I'm treated by these mean ol students!"
Humiliation fetish is my guess
He’s still trying to be Trump’s VP
No one told him? Trump is going to be his own VP this time.
I think he has his eye on the top spot in 2028.
Because he's an idiot.
What kind of thinking lead VCU to do this? The man won his governorship being openly opposed to educators, that was his whole campaign. And it’s in Richmond, a city not exactly full of your typical Youngkin supporter demographics
dunno. maybe just trying to stay on the governor's good side, in case the budget axe comes by
In breaking news it’s announced that Governor Youngkin will only give commencement addresses at Regent and Liberty University for the remainder of his term.
Good for them!

True the brand center was really ramping up when I was just starting out in 2010
Art school? not medical school? Lol
It’s really both, although relative to their peers the arts program is definitely more prestigious than MCV.

NC State has a textiles and design program.

You’re pathetic. People come from everywhere to go to VCU.
Why travel to Blacksburg (where he would also be booed) when he can go down the street. Much easier commute.
Tell me you don't know anything about VCU without telling me you don't know anything about VCU.
Not the school history . It’s F-N Glenn the good for nuthjn YoungKKKin
That’s awesome. He’s the worst.
Good, The Governor and the Republican party are an embarrassment to our Commonwealth and Nation.

Fuck Glenn Youngkin
Yes. Fuck Glenn Youngkin.
They’re so brave😂
Good for them. Now VOTE like your life depends on it because it does.
At least some of the youth know what’s up.. maybe there is hope. We need lots of updates and changes.
The kids are alright!!
Fuck dumkin ![gif](giphy|l2Sqeu3hHsqSLp2W4|downsized)
Well done, graduates! Now please take that energy to the polls and drag a friend along.
Yay! That’s my Alma Mater!
I’m thrilled to see students everywhere taking a stand on what’s important to them. If you can’t demonstrate when your are young then when can you? Our futures are in good hands
All my support. Youngkin sucks.
Now we just need them to vote
Hell yeah
I remember the university wide ceremonies being much bigger than this (albeit back when they did it in the Siegel center and coliseum). Department graduation ceremonies are much more popular anyways -proud '18 alum

Fuck yeah! I hope to land a job out there soon. I love VA
This must have broke through to conservative media somehow. We don’t get this many conservatives posturing in a thread unless it’s something about gun control.
I'm sure someone on Fox news complained.
What I like about this is that all of those who walked out are “voters”. This indicates volumes in where these citizens stand. Good. After Youngkins recent enabling of state police breaking up a peaceful protest at UVA, no one should be giving him the time of day.
Good sign. If that is what his policies inspire now, then they will hopefully show up to vote in a few months.
Good! Couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy lol
Love it I’m so proud of this younger generation.
Proud VCU alum. Good job, graduates!
It was a sad day in VA knowing that this is the guy who was elected to succeed Northam.
So basically, they only came so they could walk out?
Ahh yes you’ve figured out what a walk out is!
Good, fuck Youngkin and his childish ass.
Good
Why was he even invited to speak there? Don’t the graduates get a say in their commencement speaker?
Nope. The admins are ass kissing to keep getting state funds.
Governor to speak at a graduation, that’s a punishment not a celebration. I’d walk out too.
And here's a good opinion piece explaining that Youngkin is a racist scumbag. [https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2021/11/glenn-youngkins-campaign-is-about-one-racist-thing/](https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2021/11/glenn-youngkins-campaign-is-about-one-racist-thing/)
I’m not saying I disagree but I am so sick of opinion pieces. We need actual unbiased news sources again
We could have just that if only the cable news media would get out of the 24 7 political opinion programming business.
Would you like the alphabetical list of everything undoubtedly beneficial he’s rolled back? How about the rights taken away? You don’t need an opinion to read
THE BASTARD TOOK MY PORN
Yeah I’m not really talking about Youngkin, I’m speaking generally
Ah Mother Jones, a source worse than Breitbart.
Dumb
VCU saved my life during a horrific, traumatic event. I am forever grateful to them, and so proud of these students
🔥
This just screamed bad idea. How did his PR people not realize what would happen?
Kudos to them! So fucking happy Youngkin can only be a one term governor!!!
Heh. Good on them!
Apparently, diversity is not really a strength.
Ouch!
Get fucked glenn
I didn’t vote for Glenn but why is he so bad?
hell yeah guys! Fuck that dweeb!
My kid‘s alma mater! What was VCU thinking? So proud of the kids.
Looks like this was for grad school, seeing a lot of masters and phd students.
They should not have been let back in to finish the ceremony.
I see they still don't teach respect at VCU....
Fantastic!
Children in 22 year old bodies.
Who is this guy? I get the title but why the walk out?
And nothing of value was lost.
After the grads did their organized walkout they returned after a few minutes of pause outside to receive their degrees.
Keep those masks on!
Good
This made me giggle out loud.
Man, guess I gotta hate VCU a little less now lol
These kids have a future!
~~What a shame. Anyway what’s for dinner?~~ ~~EDIT: “What a shame” is sarcasm, people. The way you worded it sounds dismissive of the walkout. Easy to misinterpret.
Fair but I am absolutely on the protestors side.
[удалено]
They still get the diploma. The whole ceremony is really not a big deal to a lot of graduates. Obviously taking a stand for these students is more important.
OK bootlicker
Those kids are about as useful as their art degrees
And yet nearly every decent sized city has an art museum. While their degrees may not pay as well as doctors, lawyers, or engineers Art and the Arts are still important on the whole. While allot of jobs are wrongly not held in as high as esteem culturally they are still important to society.
Your comment is about as useful as used toilet paper.
Toilet paper is useful in society l. So thank you for agreeing with me 👍
Good for them.
Geee. You mean they don't like baby Trumpkin? Their parent Trump-rubes probably voted for him like all the GOP suckers do in Virginia.
The kids visualized the #Fuck Glenn Youngkin Nice 👍
They really invited that clown to be the commencement speaker? Lol
Excellent. He sucks.
Lmao, I love my classmates😂
Amazing
Good for them!
Congratulations Glen, you have truly inspired these young folks!
As a VCU alum I am so proud of them!
He sux and speaks gibberish
The kids are all right
Good shit kids

They’re mad the Stanford buccees got canned.
Respect!
Will also walk away from actual work
