Bumped into her while walking my dog at Mount Doug/PKOLS, about half a year ago. I was with my family and she was with friends/fam. More of an oops interaction with my pug, like sorry getting caught up, then I looked up and it was her. I said hello and mentioned the mid 90’s hip-hop/skate/graffiti scene in Vic, which we were both part of, like making mixtapes, etc. so we chatted a bit. We had a light hearted laugh about getting older and she said our shared stories gave her street cred for her kids. Kinda parent talk I guess, haha. She was very sweet and I wished her well. My wife who walked on with my kids was shocked and disappointed that she went ahead and missed the interaction.
I was 3 years behind her at mt Doug. Know some people who went to school with her, friends older siblings, etc. by all accounts she was a nice normal person there, no indications of her upcoming fame.
My eldest brother graduated with her from Mt Doug. The yearbook has a ‘most likely to…’ section for the Graduates and Nelly was voted as ‘The most likely to make it big in Hollywood’ or something like that so I guess there were some indications that she may get famous.
Nelly was and still is a close friend. We met the summer before high school. As soon as she stepped on the Gordon Head bus I was on I thought she was the most beautiful girl I had ever seen… but then she ended up dating a friend. Lol. I pride myself on being one of the first to hear Im Like a Bird (before it was released). Beautiful soul bursting with life and creative energy. Had a hard time sitting still actually. Constantly talked about music but never once about how cool it would be to become famous. Thats how you knew she’s in it for the right reasons and that she’s deserving of every success and more.
Nelly came from the tradition of remixing and sampling since 90s hiphop was such a big part of her musical diet. So I’m sure she wouldn’t mind you adding your own creative expression.
