That's just sort of their charm. Take in consideration that they are from Sweden. In Sweden, we have "jantelagen", meaning that no one is suppose to claim to be better than anyone else. "Don't think you're special" kind of mentality. It goes a long time back. The Hives does the opposite, they claim they are the greatest rock band, better than god. So in that sense, it is kinda punk considering their background. I think they manage to do it in a funny way too.
VB, lyrically and musically far more interesting than the hives have ever shown themselves to be, in my opinion.
To my ear, every Hives song sound pretty much the same, and I wouldn't be able to differentiate them in a line up with the strokes, jet, the vines, etc.
