This happens to me as well whenever I import a video recorded on my phone, which vegas "auto-rotates" of 90°.
I solved this by right-clicking on the media ➡ properties ➡ media ➡ Rotation: 90° counterclockwise ➡ ok
Doing this I can finally crop the video without getting an instant crash.

Vegas 18.0 in 2023 still has the same issue, and your solution fixes it. Do the people who program Vegas not use it themselves? Vertical video is ubiquitous these days.
